Hi. You "prodded" Storm(Novel), but the author contested it, so I have it up at AFD, if you'd like to add your 2 cents. Cheers, Dawn Bard (talk) 20:58, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Your closing of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jaafar Aksikas

I did notice that the keep "votes" were fishy, but I assumed good faith and put equal consideration into them (most of them, anyway). I agree that I probably could have gotten away with closing the discussion as delete, but since there was the possibility of single purpose accounts and sockpuppetry, I felt an accurate consensus would have been difficult to determine. A DRV would be fine, and probably the best way to reach consensus. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 21:05, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for helping at Wikipedia:Suggestions for name disambiguation! I know you just got your feet wet there, but you did a very detailed job. Those redirects and dab pages make Wikipedia more useful and accessible for everyone, and your work is appreciated. – Quadell (talk) 23:00, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I'm getting ready to create another batch of needed dabs once this batch is completed, which should be soon. Here I stated that I'll be including some categories of people "in honor of" various people that have helped with the project, based on their interests. I can't tell much about you from your userpage though. (What can I say? I'm stumped.) Is there any large group of people near-and-dear to your heart that I could include in your honor? Brazilian footballers? Canadian psychiatrists? Chess grandmasters? Serial killers? – Quadell (talk) 20:48, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions for disambiguation

Greetings. You've previously helped out at Wikipedia:Suggestions for name disambiguation, so I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know we have a brand new batch of 3,835 names to be checked! These include sports figures, federal judges, serial killers, librarians, and other assorted sundry folks. This batch also should be a little easier to update, with corrected templates and a handy search function. Enjoy! – Quadell (talk) 03:36, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please engage in discussion on the article's talk page. A four-sentence long plot summary in the lede is really not all that long. The issue is that the Plot subsection should be expanded, not that the lede should be trimmed. Cirt (talk) 20:46, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Brueckenweb template

Hi. Saw you created the Structurae template in 2007. Are you interested in doing the same for brueckenweb.de? Right now I am just kind of imitating the template. Regards Gun Powder Ma (talk) 02:08, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done; see {{Brueckenweb}}! For example, {{Brueckenweb|id=1234|title=Vleutensebrug}} produces ""Vleutensebrug". brueckenweb.de (in German).". Let me know if you experience any problems. However, even when using the template, please keep in mind the relevant WP guidelines for external links and especially links to non-English-language sites. Happy editing, Hqb (talk) 13:55, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thx. I will keep that in mind. Just curious, but why not the wording "...in the brueckenweb database"? Gun Powder Ma (talk) 21:39, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Mainly because Brueckenweb (unlike, say, Structurae or IMDB) doesn't prominently refer to itself as a database in its official name. (And neither do other, similar sites like SkyscraperPage.com that might also be worth creating templates for.) But I suppose "in the Brueckenweb bridge database" would be fine too, just a bit longer. Smirnov move

Hi there! I am not going to contest your move of Alexei Smirnov—you probably know better—but as per the WP:RUS guideline, could you, please, add examples of the "Alexei" usage to the article's talk page or, better yet, expand the external links and/or reference sections? The only link that's currently in the article leads to a page where the person is referred as only "A. Yu. Smirnov". Your help will be much appreciated. Patronymics

Hi, Hqb! Sorry for a delayed response—I am not normally around during weekends.

Regarding your question, I would like to first point out that WP:NCP does not actually "actively discourage[] including additional names... for disambiguation [purposes]"; in fact, WP:NCP#Scope of this guideline explicitly states that this guideline does not deal with page names of disambiguation pages at all (see the last bullet in the bulleted list of that section). It does discourage the use of patronymics in titles overall, but that recommendation is actively being followed—we never include patronymics in titles if no ambiguity exists (I personally moved dozens of "first name+patronymic+last name" articles to their "first name+last name" equivalents).

Having clarified that, you did not find a rule of disambiguating Russian people by patronymic because it is not codified—from the perspective of editors of WP:RUSSIA (some of whom, I should mention, are native English speakers) the practice just makes sense and, as such, is being widely followed. I realize this is probably not the answer you were hoping for, but I do have the task codification of this rule buried somewhere on my to-do list—it's just that for the past several years of its active use no one really questioned it. Besides, "documenting actual good practices" is the first option to be considered when a new guideline is being designed or an existing one is being amended.

The main reason why English speakers are hesitant to accept patronymics as valid disambiguators is because they see them pretty much the same as Western middle names. This, however, is not the case. While a middle name is something parents give to a child as a "backup" and, apart from rarely being used, it is still the same as the first name, a patronymic is a different animal entirely. It is, in fact, kind of a cross breed of a first name and a last name. I won't go into the details, as the patronymic article explains them very well. What's more, while a person's middle name is not normally widely known or used in the West, patronymics are actively used in Russia (and, indeed, required in formal environments or when one needs to convey respect). A Russian person would never be ashamed of his/her patronymic because "it sounds weird"; not for the same reasons a Western person would be ashamed of his/her middle name anyway. It is true that Westerners treat patronymics just as they would treat middle names, but that does not make them equivalent.

There are also good reasons why a patronymic is a better disambiguator choice than, say, occupation. A patronymic is something that is documented, verifiable, and in use. An occupation, more often than not, can be expressed by multiple words. Look at Alexey Smirnov, which is currently on AfD. We have two different persons who are both pilots and Heroes of the Soviet Union—I just can't think of a better disambiguator than their patronymics in this case. Another person is an "officer" and also a Hero of the Soviet Union—even if you use "officer" as a disambiguator, it wouldn't be a great choice because the other two pilots, undoubtedly, were "officers" as well. Finally, we have a person who is an archaeologist and historian—both words could be used as a disambiguator, or we could use "scientist" or whatever. Problem is, and pardon the pun, the choice of a disambiguator here is a very ambigous process. One could argue that it is easily remedied by using a network of redirects, but this same argument can be used just the same if the article is unambiguosly located under a "first name+patronymic+last name" title.

Of course, not all cases are going to be as difficult as this Smirnov one, but the essence will still remain the same—there is no better disambiguator than patronymics in this case.

I hope I was able to provide an adequate explanation, but, if not, I'll be more than happy to continue to debate this further, if you still have concerns. Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 14:28, May 11, 2009 (UTC)

Third Julie Payne

I just found your edit about an Oregon-born actress named Julie Payne who was a member of The Committee (improv group). You probably have no idea how much that complicates things. I was just about to add to the article Dr. Johnny Fever (a character from the sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati) that the Terre Haute, Ind.-born Julie Payne played Johnny's former live-in girlfriend Buffy Denver, who showed up in a two-part episode to sue him for palimony. However, Howard Hesseman, who played Fever, was also a member of that group, making it quite plausible that the Julie Payne who played that role was this one, not Julie K. Payne. I almost stuck a bit about this into "K"'s article just now! Glad I didn't. I had noticed a "1946" year of birth before, but assumed it was merely a typo for "1940" and, since it wasn't actually showing on the page, ignored it. Jeez, what a situation! (I've put this page on my watchlist, so you can reply right here; I'll remove it when this discussion is resolved; promise!) --Tbrittreid (talk) 18:49, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it's a mess. For example, I think the notable(?) 1964 graduate of South Eugene High School#Notable alumni is the Oregon Julie, but I couldn't quite find enough non-local info to justify making even a stub for her. She did apparently have some TV roles, though (e.g., in The Streets of San Francisco, which IMDB currently credits to Julie K.) I thought the SAG had name-uniqueness rules precisely to avoid such problems... Hqb (talk) 19:00, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
They do indeed, but since Payne & Shirley's daughter had "hung it up" before the other arrived from Terre Haute, it didn't come up. You'll find a "Bob Cummings" credited in a bit role in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, presumably because the star of The Bob Cummings Show (better known as Love That Bob) and many other things had by then retired from acting and let his SAG membership expire, leaving the name available. And since the Committee member Julie Payne worked mostly on the stage, the SAG didn't come into play for her. American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) was probably the only union she was in as a TV actress. --Tbrittreid (talk) 20:20, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that's a good point: they probably did not overlap as SAG members at all, so it's going to be even harder to disentangle them. Oh well. Hqb (talk) 21:23, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

One other thing—the IMDb gives the Indiana Julie only one credit as "Julie K. Payne" and that's an episode of the Chris Elliott/FOX sitcom Get a Life, in 1991! Sounds to me more like yet another Julie Payne forced to use a middle initial (albeit coincidentally the same as the Indiana woman's real one) by union rules than that actress herself. Oh me, oh my! --Tbrittreid (talk) 21:08, 28 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm getting dizzy, especially with the latest bit of info I've found. Let's continue at Talk:Julie Payne; maybe someone else can weigh in. Hqb (talk) 18:01, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of American Lesion (band), and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: American Lesion. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally moving or duplicating content, please be sure you have followed the procedure at Wikipedia:Splitting by acknowledging the duplication of material in edit summary to preserve attribution history.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 20:44, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article American Lesion (band) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Apparent garage band with no evidence of notability. Albums expected at some point in the future.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles. See the Article Wizard.

Thank you.

A tag has been placed on American Lesion (band) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, individual animal(s), an organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. A Stop at Willoughby (talk) 00:37, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greenspan/QD change

It's still not acceptable to create an article about yourself? I tagged it the way I did because it was created by Dgreenspan Purplebackpack89 (Notes Taken) (Locker) 20:07, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Creating an article about oneself is strongly discouraged, but there's no absolute policy against it, nor is it a valid speedy deletion criterion. However, a self-authored article can often be deleted under the A7 (non-notability) and/or G11 (promotion) criteria. Hqb (talk) 20:28, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Thanks for fixing my typo in the birth year category on the above, but I was wondering why you added English nationality? There's nothing in the article to support it. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 12:56, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. I actually didn't mean to suggest citizenship, just make it clearer that he played for an English club, to help put the article in context. But it could indeed be misunderstood, so I've reverted myself. Sorry! Hqb (talk) 13:39, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, and I see your point... I wasn't keen on just putting "is a footballer", though even "British" would be an assumption, but I tend to assume "the Football League" gives context, and perhaps it doesn't. Maybe if it read "was a professional association footballer", at least we'd know what game we're on about... In fact, he's almost certainly Scottish. He first played for a Dumfries-based club, the 1891 census has a John Irving of about the right age from Dumfries living in Lincoln with two Scottish lodgers whose names coincide with two of Irving's Lincoln City teammates, but unfortunately their occupations are given as "real" jobs rather than footballer. Which is fair enough, Lincoln didn't turn pro until 1891/2, but no doubt it's original research to deduce that one year's power loom turner and engine fitter are the next year's pro footballers... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:03, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello , this is domainwiki100. I am sorry for deleting speedy deletion on my talk page. I just didn't want others to see the violations I've gotten. Sorry! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mydomainwiki100 (talkcontribs) 13:09, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
