A Cars Toon: Mater's Tall Tales (A Cars Toon for short) is an animated short television series by Pixar featuring the characters Mater and Lightning McQueen from the film Cars. The episodes air on Disney Channel, Disney XD, ABC Family and formerly on Toon Disney. The series first broadcast was on October 27, 2008.[1] Not exclusive to television, the episodes have also premiered as theatrical shorts, such as with the 2008 film Bolt. On November 2, 2010, the series will release a Blu-ray featuring 2 brand new episodes.

Plot

All of the Cars Toons follow the same tall tale formula: Mater tells a story of something he has done in the past. In the story, Mater finds himself in an inescapable predicament. When McQueen questions Mater over whether the events in the story actually occurred, Mater responds, "Don't you remember? You was there too!", and continues the story including McQueen's sudden participation. The cartoons end with Mater leaving the scene, often followed by characters or references to the story that was being told, suggesting the story might be real. Each story includes Mater, Lightning McQueen, Mia and Tia (the two red cars that adore Lightning McQueen, although in this case they are portrayted as adoring Mater), and various pit crew cars.

Characters

Main characters

  • Mater (Larry the Cable Guy): The owner of Tow Mater Towing and Salvage.
  • Lightning McQueen' (Keith Ferguson): Mater's best friend.

Secondary characters

Mia and Tia (Lindsey Collins and Elissa Knight): Lightning's biggest fans who adore him. Fillmore Mark Silverman: Sarge's roommate and a hippie car. Sally Bonnie Hunt: Lightning's girlfriend. Red Craig Ferguson :A shy fire truck who spends his time gardening and washing things.

Production

Tokyo Mater premiered in theaters in the US with Bolt on December 12, 2008. The short is the first Disney-Pixar production presented in Disney Digital 3-D.[2] Mike and Sulley from Monsters Inc. (who are seen at the end of Cars) make cameo appearances in Tokyo Mater. There is an advertisement for Buy and Large from Wall-e[citation needed] Popular trance artist BT provided the full soundtrack; his logo appears as a lit sign in Tokyo. Tokyo Mater is also accompanying the UK release. The episode is basically a parody of the 2006 Universal Studios film The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift.

Merchandising

It was announced[citation needed] that Cars Toons were to be released as part of the Disney-Pixar Cars Die-Cast Line, in mid-2009. In October 2009, they released several diecasts. They released all of the Rescue Squad Mater and Mater the Greater diecasts, and are currently working on El Materdor diecasts. and reverse
