Some things I would like to discuss

    1. First of all, I think Larry_King should go under the category: [Category:American_people_of_Belarusian-Jewish_descent] because it says in the article that his parents emigrated from Belarus and they were Jewish. Also I think Peter_Douglas and Eric_Douglas should go under that category as since their father Kirk_Douglas is listed under that category as well. 2. I think it should be noted in the Alexandra_Powers article that her mother is Katharyn_Powers and was a writer for variety of TV series. This article says they are related: http://www.museumstuff.com/learn/topics/Katharyn_Powers Also I think in the Katharyn_Powers article these links should be added: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0584251/ http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Katharyn_Powers http://www.moviefone.com/celebrity/katharyn-powers/2035049/main http://stargate.wikia.com/wiki/Katharyn_Powers Thanks! Neptunekh2 (talk) 00:31, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Number 1 is a fantastically bad idea. See WP:OC#CATGRS for an explanation why. The big issue is that there is no compelling reason to categorize people by their ancestry for arbitrary reasons. Categories should be relevent, and unless Larry King or Peter Douglas's Belarussian background is demonstratably a big deal in their lives, there is no reason to categorize them as such. --Jayron32 00:55, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I note that the URL when pulling up a page shows en for English. if I want a dutch version of the page the URL shows NL

So if I am reading the EN version of the page, why is it that your money begging note from the founder ONLY looks at my IP location and not which language I am reading the page in?

System does not accept any login name

    Hi,

I ve been trying to create a new account but the system does not accept any login name. It is strange becouse I tryed around 10 different names. I guess there is a problem about this function.

I ve also been trying to edit a new article but I can not find the edit page.

Please check the system and let me know how the solution.

Best regards sems —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.246.120.200 (talk) 11:08, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are around 14 million taken usernames and the system also rejects some names which remind too much of the existing names. Our logs [1] show several accounts created per minute on average so the system seems to be working. You didn't mention any of the attempted names so it's impossible for us to check whether they are taken. And you didn't mention the page you were trying to edit (or were you trying to create a page?) so it's impossible for us to see whether there is something special about it. Please be more specific. We are not mind readers. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:21, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Check information on a main page but also on individuals?

I'm trying to set it up so that I can add information about specific people on their respective pages, let's say:

    A: 140 120 100 90 B: 142 120 101 84 C: 100 130 120 98

But I also want to see on a main page, the information of all of these, in a table.

The problem is I need A, B, and C to use a template, because there were will be a lot more than three things. Every time I try and use transclusion within a template, I get a messed up template page, severely messed up. The information is also constantly updating and it'd be nice if the A, B, and C pages only have to be updated, and not the other page as well.

I'm sure there are plugins that help with this, but the one I've used before on a wikia was a bit buggy so I stopped.

I'm sure there has to be a nicer way to do this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DatOneGuy (talkcontribs) 11:52, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What is the difference between Kip and Kip?--Kipd (talk) 15:40, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

''Kip'' and <i>Kip</i> both make italics here at Wikipedia. ''Kip'' is the recommended wiki method. <i>Kip</i> is the html method which may for example occur in code copied from a html document. Somebody may later convert it to ''Kip''. You wrote <i>Kip<i> which may also work in some contexts but should not be used. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:52, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Would you mind cleaning up the Alexandra Powers article. I added a reference and messed up. Thanks! Neptunekh2 (talk) 15:45, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Neptune. If you go to the article's page history your will see that your edit was reverted with the accompanying edit summary: " WP:RS / WP:BLP. Find a better source." For future reference, the problem with the display of the citation is that you did not enclose it in ref tags, like this <ref>citation text</ref>. That is what tells the software to treat it as an inline citation and makes it display in the references section at the bottom of the article. The citation template you used {{cite web |url= etc.}} only acts to make the citations formatting consistent. Please see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners for further information. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:24, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Sorting Wikipedia links?

Hi, I have a long list of Wikipedia links saved in a plain text file. A lot of the links are out of date and are redirects or their appropriate article has been removed. Is there any automated way of sorting through these links (e.g. automatically removing dead links and replacing redirects)? Questions about using infobox templates

    hello,

I have threeone question. I have errors with Template:Infobox Masters of Russian Animation. First, the | preceded by = and | followed by = don't display; could you clean up this template? Second, in the article There Lived Kozyavin there are a large space between the top of the article and the text. Why? Third, How do I add different colors in Template:Infobox Masters of Russian Animation/color, so that the colors in the e.g. "DVD1" row for | labelstyle = and | datastyle = are different, anything but red. Is this possible? Thank you.-- ♫Greatorangepumpkin♫ T 17:00, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think you've fixed the colour problem yourself since posting here? -- John of Reading (talk) 18:22, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you john for fixing. Unfortunately the colors were not resolved. But it is optional.-- ♫Greatorangepumpkin♫ T 18:54, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If I edit There Lived Kozyavin, change "DVD1" to "DVD2" and then preview, the infobox subheadings turn green. Is this the kind of colour change you are after? -- John of Reading (talk) 19:08, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but I want that the labelstyle and the datastyle will get another colors, for example: DVD1 is color red, the labelstyle should be "#FF4500" and the datastyle "#FFA500", and for the other DVDs the same. How do I do that, so not only the headerstyle will get this color after switching through 4 DVDs. I hope you understood me. Thank you.-- ♫Greatorangepumpkin♫ T 10:42, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Since I am hoping to improve my template skills I have coded this in my sandboxes. User:John of Reading/X2 could be a new two-parameter definition of the "color" template; User:John of Reading/X1 could be a revised definition of the "infobox" template; and User:John of Reading/Sandbox calls "X1". At least with the colours I've coded into the "X2" template, the result is hideous. If you decide to use any of this, make sure you choose more subtle colours! -- John of Reading (talk) 20:04, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Unable to edit

The last item at Talk:Sarah Palin was "hatted"...(an explanation of that process might help me). Also, when I try to add a new thread, Steven Schmidt, it lists the title of the thread but I don't see it except for on the list. What am I doing wrong? Buster Seven Talk 18:01, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The problem was that the person who archived the thread using {{Hidden archive top}} did not do it properly. When you hide a thread with the various templates available you have to add a template at the top as well as to the bottom. If you forget to add the bottom one, then it keeps swallowing new text added to the page as part of the archiving. I have fixed it and your post is showing now. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 18:16, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Copy and paste vandalism

Last January I have created two lists named List of scientists whose names are used as SI units and List of scientists whose names are used as non SI units. These were well sourced articles and were in the scope of several projects. But somebody has delated the articles and cretaed another list named List of scientists whose names are used as SI units and non SI units by copy and paste method. I have spend a considerable time and energy to create the two articles and I am sorry to see them deleted. Although every contributer is welcome to improve the articles, deleting articles and creating new articles by copying should be considered as a kind of vandalism. I think this type of creating (or should we say cheating ?) should not be allowed in Wikipedia ? Well, happy new year to all Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 21:21, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's not vandalism. The editor merged the two articles into one at a different title, which is perfectly within the rules. The original titles you created have been redirected, but the page history still exists. You are free to revert the redirects and restore the content, but I suggest you talk with the editor who performed the merge first. --Mysdaao talk 21:32, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Ratings for Movies

Is there a specific reason as to why pages for films don't mention their ratings in the basic information (aka PG, PG-13, R, etc.)? Are users not allowed to post this information? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emclaughlin (talkcontribs) 05:25, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mainly, there are simply too many ratings systems in English-speaking countries, let alone the world over. Further, these ratings can change drastically over time as different editions of a film are released, and re-released. --Monterey Bay (talk) 05:38, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That, I believe, is the main reason why a film's ratings aren't included in the {{Infobox film}} template. You may want to look through the talk page for that template to see if the issue has come up before. Dismas|(talk) 05:47, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Don't do that. Pictures should be left or right aligned unless there are only pictures in the row. Otherwise it gives poor display with many common setups for window size, text size and other settings. I have a common setup and the table and image already take up nearly the whole width. Apply a monobook line only when using Safari

I dropped my rollback rights because when I use my iPhone (which uses the Safari browser) I would occasionally hit the rollback link by mistake. Another user suggested adding ".page-Special_Watchlist .mw-rollback-link {display:none;}" to my monobook.css, but that would also remove it from the watchlist display when I am on my main computer. Is there a way to write a line in the monobook file that would only apply if I were using Safari? That would be ideal, because then I would have no rollback links on the IPhone but I would have them on my usual computer, where I use Firefox. Please do your own homework.

There are a few options, providing that he passes the notability guideline. Seeing as you have a Conflict of interest, an article can be requested at WP:REQ. When starting an article you can use WP:AFC. Jarkeld (talk) 15:56, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Searching in category an subcategories

I've been trying to search for late female Swedish engineers (I know it's a funny thing to search for) that is to find the intersection between the categories Dead people, Swedish engineers and Women. However, I realized that the incategory modifier won't search within subcategories, which made my search a whole lot more difficult to carry out. Is there a way to include subcategories in the search? Belteshassar (talk) 16:10, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Does WP:CATI help? – ukexpat (talk) 16:54, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The OP will probably not have much success in this search even using CategoryIntersect. Articles about individual women should not include the category Category:Women, because it is simply far too broad; I would recommend removing that category and only searching Swedish engineers and Dead people, then identifying women by their given names. Unfortunately we do not have an article on Swedish given names that could be relevant. Intelligentsium 03:24, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Try going to http://toolserver.org/~magnus/catscan_rewrite.php and entering Swedish engineers in the "Categories" box, and Living people in the "Negative categories" box. This searches for Category:Swedish engineers and all its subcategories down to sub-sub-sub-categories (though I don't think it has any beyond sub-categories), and excludes anyone categorised as living; this seems simpler than searching the entire tree below Category:Deaths by year, and is probably more reliable, too. It doesn't limit to women but I guess the 54 results returned aren't too many to check manually. You might also want to check related categories such as Category:Swedish inventors. File extension does not match MIME type.

I keep getting this error message "File extension does not match MIME type." when I try to upload a new image. The images I'm tyring to upload are all below 100 MB and in .JPG file format. Can you explain to me what to do in simple terms? Thanks in advance! Ithundir (talk) 21:00, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A few possibilities spring to mind. Are you uploading a new image or uploading a new version of an existing image title? If the latter, the old image needs to have the .jpg extension in its name already or the upload will fail. Are you sure the image is actually in jpg format? It's not just a name but an actual format (you may say "duh!" but I've seen this before), so if the image is actually a png, for example, and you only renamed it to have jpg as the extension without actually saving it to that format, the error message you are getting is actually correct. Also, sometimes images you grab from the internet actually have wrong file extensions already attached so it might have originally said it was a jpg, but never was. An easy way to check the actual format is to open the image with paint.net, GIMP or whatever image program you have, and then try saving as; the actual file format is normally selected for you. In any event, try resaving as a jpg. At Commons I read a post indicating that when this error message is a false positive, editing the image--resizing it slightly for example--will sometimes fix the software's misidentification of the file type.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:09, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Question about the Writer Infobox

What's the difference between "subject" and "genre"? Nightscream (talk) 22:49, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

See the documentation at Template:Infobox writer. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:58, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. One other thing: What's the difference between "education" and "alma mater"? The template documentation doesn't really explain the difference between the two. Nightscream (talk) 06:00, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Fundraiser

    Hello,

This is statement rather than a question. I have donated to the fundraiser, my only conflict with the matter is that Jimmy Wales's picture is constantly posted for it, which may give a certain impression of egocentricity. To make the campaign more appealing the voices and pictures of the users should reflect the service wikipedia provides to the world, not its founder's.

    Kind regards

I want to use some photos on my website buit the copyright info is monumental. What is a simple way to pay a fee to cover this, if that is what I need to do? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Staycentral (talkcontribs) 06:02, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

By the very nature of the material hosted here, you do not have to pay a fee to use any photos found on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, however, depending on the license, you may not be allowed to use them without the consent of the owner of the original material. What are the files you want to use? [CharlieEchoTango] 09:46, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Creating an article

    Dear Sir or Madam,

i am in charge of the marketing activities of a long-established german company called Schmidbauer GmbH & Co. KG. As i am trying to inform people and potential clients the best possible way, i wrote an article about the company on Wikipedia.

Unfortunately, it was deleted on the grounds that it would be commercial. To be fair, however, i did not use any terms of self-glorification but rather descriptive information about history etc.

I would like to give the whole story a new try by the beginning of next year.

Hope you can tell me in the meantime which details i should take into consideration.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Sincerely,

Andreas Radler Marketing Director — Preceding unsigned comment added by SchmidbauerGroup (talkcontribs) 09:39, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The short answer is that you should not be creating this article, because you have a conflict of interest. Wikipedia is not a medium for advertising or promotion. Please read the FAQ for organisations.
More bad news: your chosen user name conflicts with the user name policy and is likely to be blocked soon. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:51, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    SUL Usurpation

The English Wikipedia has changed so that uploading new images should preferably be done to WikiMedia Commons. I don't have an account there, so I tried to generate one with then new Single User Login. That wasn't entirely successful, because some other people have already registered an account named "JIP" at the Danish and Russian Wikipedias, in 2009. The Danish one has no edits, the Russian one has one. I placed a Usurpation Request template on the talk page of both accounts. I can understand some Danish because it's similar to Swedish, but I don't understand any Russian. Is this enough? How will I know if I can usurp the accounts? JIP | Talk 09:58, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You can post the request in English here: [2]. The Russian WP's requirements for usurping accounts there can be found here [3], which I think are easily met. ArakunemTalk 14:55, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Even if you are the creator of these images (something of which we have no evidence one way or the other), you have already licensed their use, and I believe that license is irrevocdable. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:18, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why doesn't My watchlist e-mail me new changes?

Is there a setting that I can select in order to be notified of new changes to articles or stuff I'm watching? This is very important, if it doesn't exist I'm wondering why no one added it by now...
