Kapasia (Bengali: কাপাসিয়া) is an Upazila of Gazipur District in the Division of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Geography

Kapasia is located at 24°06′00″N 90°34′15″E / 24.1000°N 90.5708°E / 24.1000; 90.5708 . It has 59221 units of house hold and total area 356.98 km². Kapasia is a very beautiful Thana of Gazipur District, often becoming a destination for shooting films, and countryside picnics. [1] Kapasia is a part of the old Bhawal Estate and falls within its boundary. The Bhawal National Park, one of the prominent national parks of Bangladesh within Dhaka Division, is only 20 km drive away from Kapasia.

Demographics

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Kapasia has a population of 303,710. Males constitute are 50.83% of the population, and females 49.17%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 154,204. Kapasia has an average literacy rate of 100% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[2] The famous person of Kapasia are Prime Minister Banga Taj Tajuddin Ahmed, A.G Fakir shahabuddin, ex Food Minister Fakir Mannan, state Minister Tajim Ahmed Sohel Taj MP, Brig. General Hannan Shah, Dr golam Hossain, Mr.Maj.Gen Manjur Rashid, Rear Admiral Z. U. Ahmed, Brig. General Sharif Aziz, Dr. Sanaullah ex MP, Mr. Shahidullah ex Mp, Mr. Obaidullah ex MP, Md.Saiful Islam Banker(Founder-Chairman of Progoti Co-operative Landmortgage Bank Limited- Progoti Bank), Prof. Mafizuddin Ahmed, Late Squadron Leader Md. Mohsin, Prof. Tahmina Afroz, Mr. Alauddin Al Azad, Mr. Sadique Ahsan, Dr. Fazlur Rahman, Khandaker Azizur Rahman (Pera), Dr. Awal Akand, Md Ajgor Hosen (chairman),Toiab ali Bhuiya(chairman),Yunus Ali(chairman), Mr. Mesbahuddin Advocate, Khalilur Rahman (Khalil).Mr.Mofazzal Hossain (prokrity) and Prof. M.A. Quader Advocate.

Administrative

Kapasia has 11 Unions/Wards, 167 Mauzas/Mahallas, and 231 villages. Sohel Taj has been the M.P from Kapasia since last few consecutive terms and is also acting as the current M.P from Kapasia. However, Hannan Shah has been the other famous opposition.

Agriculture and Outputs

Kapasia is a part of Gazipur's Agricultural Area. Fishery is also popular along with farming. There has been an earlier project in Kapasia Upazila where the WorldFish Center with funding from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Danish International Development Agency (Danida), had researched on farming systems and had introduced adaptive integrated aquaculture practices. [3] Water purification is also under control and action in Kapasia. Progoti Co-operative Landmortgage Bank Limited (Progoti Bank) in Main Road Kapasia Bazar Gazipur- 1730, a small town nearly 60 kilometer north of Dhaka. Website of the bank : www.progotibank.com.bd which is a specialized Bangladeshi bank where money is received for custody and repaid on demand. It is the provision for development of the undeveloped persons of the Bangladesh. The bank started functioning since January 10,2009 from Kapasia town. Forthis Kapasia is birth place of the bank. Kapasia is known now worldwide for this bank. Without it, Kapasia High School at Gazipur District was selected and pure drinking water facilities were installed for the school children by Nestle Bangladesh Ltd. he project also includes water education programmes to teach students about the importance of clean water, the need for water conservation and the link between clean water, hygiene, health and wellness. Mr. Laurent Therond from Nestlé Bangladesh Ltd. spoke on the occasion and emphasized Nestlé's commitment to continuing such corporate social activities. [4]
