Kenya Summer Moore (born January 24, 1971) is an American actress, model, author, producer, and reality tv star. After winning the Miss Michigan USA title in 1993, she went on to win Miss USA 1993 and finished in the top six of the Miss Universe 1993 pageant. She also founded the Kenya Moore Foundation, a charity which awards scholarships to underprivileged girls from her high school alma mater.

Early life

Moore is African American. She was born in Detroit, Michigan and was raised by her grandmother and aunt in Detroit, Michigan. She is a graduate of Cass Technical High School. After high school she attended Wayne State University, majoring in Psychology.

Pageants

Moore competed in numerous beauty pageants in 1993; first becoming Miss Michigan USA, then Miss USA 1993. Moore was crowned by outgoing titleholder Shannon Marketic of California. Moore became the second Miss USA titleholder from Michigan and the second African American winner ever, and then competed in Miss Universe 1993, where she finished fifth.

Post-pageant career

Films

Moore has appeared in a number of films: Waiting to Exhale (1995), Senseless (1998), Trois (2000), No Turning Back (2001), Brothers in Arms (2005), Resurrection: The J.R. Richard Story (2005), Cloud 9 (2006), I Know Who Killed Me (2007), The Confidant (2010),[1] and Trapped: Haitian Nights (2010).[2]

Music videos

She can be seen in the music videos for Shai's "I Don't Wanna Be Alone" (1996), Jermaine Dupri's "Money Ain't a Thang" (1998, from Life in 1472), "Hot Parts" (2003) by Passion, and "Street Dreams" (2004, from Video Anthology, Vol. 1) by Nas.

Moore successfully leveraged her pageant wins into appearances in several television programs: Video Soul, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1994: "Mother's Day"), Martin (1996: "You're All I Need"), Homeboys in Outer Space (1996: "Super Bad Foxy Lady Killer or Ty and Morris Get the Shaft"), Sparks (1997: "I, Spy"), Smart Guy (1997: "Brother, Brother"), Living Single (1997: "One Degree of Separation"), Damon (1998: "The Designer"), The Steve Harvey Show (1998: "Educating Piggy"), In the House (1999: "How Nana Got Her Groove Back" and "Not as Good as it Gets"), The Jamie Foxx Show (1999: Change of Heart"), The Parent 'Hood (1998: "A Sister Scorned" and 1999: Wedding Bells Blues"), Nubian Goddess (2001: as Host), Men, Women & Dogs (2001: "Sick as a Dog"), The Parkers, Girlfriends (2004: "Maybe Baby" and "New York Bound"), Brothers in Arms, Under One Roof, and Meet The Browns. In 2012, Moore joined the season five cast of the Bravo reality TV show, The Real Housewives of Atlanta.[3][4]

In 2007, Moore published a non-fiction dating advice book titled Game: Get Some.[5]

She has appeared on the covers of numerous magazines, such as Ebony, Essence, Glamour, hype hair, Jet (22 March 1993),[6] and Smooth (June 2010).[7]

Behind the scenes

Moore was credited as producer/director of the film Haitian Nights;[8] after the project lost its director for unspecified reasons, Moore took over the production and completed the film. When the film failed to find distribution, Moore founded Moore Vision Media, an independent movie production and home-video distribution company.[9] The company's first production was The Confidant, starring Billy Zane, Boris Kodjoe, David Banner, Bai Ling, and Richard Roundtree and features an appearance by Moore. The movie was released by Universal Vivendi August 24, 2010.
