"The Day of the Doctor"[1][2][3] is the 50th anniversary special of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who. It is written by Steven Moffat,[4] who also serves as executive producer alongside Faith Penhale.[5] It has been described by series producer Marcus Wilson as a "love letter to the fans" and by the controller of BBC One, Danny Cohen, as an "event drama".[4][6] It is due to be shown on BBC One on 23 November 2013 in both 2D and 3D.[7][8] The special is due to be broadcast simultaneously in several countries.[8] The special will also be shown concurrently in 3D at cinemas across the United Kingdom.[9]

David Tennant and Billie Piper, who previously starred in Doctor Who as the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler respectively, have been lined up to appear in the special.[10] John Hurt will also star as a previously-unknown past incarnation of the Doctor,[11][12] as was introduced at the end of the series seven finale "The Name of the Doctor".[11][13] Joanna Page is also due to star in the episode.[10] Jemma Redgrave will reprise her role as Kate Stewart.[14] The special will feature the return of the Zygons, aliens which have previously only appeared in Terror of the Zygons (1975),[15] as well as the return of the Daleks.[16]

Plot

The Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler will return in the special alongside the Eleventh Doctor and Clara Oswald.[17] The Zygons and Daleks will also feature in the special as the enemies.[15][16] When asked about the special on The Jonathan Ross Show, Matt Smith teased the word "paintings".[17]

Cast

  • Joanna Page as Queen Elizabeth I. At a read through of the script taking place on 1 April, the BBC released an image confirming that she will have a role in the episode.[19][20] After Page was photographed in Tudor costume and makeup, Rob Leigh of The Mirror speculated that Page had been cast as Elizabeth I.[21] This was eventually confirmed.[20]
  • Ingrid Oliver in an unannounced role. Oliver was shown in one of the photo shoots while filming, wearing the Fourth Doctor's iconic scarf.[22]
  • Nicholas Briggs as the voice of the Daleks.[16]
  • Ken Bones as The General.[23]
  • Orlando James as Lord Bentham.[23]

Production

"The Day of the Doctor" was written by Steven Moffat,[4] current head writer of Doctor Who, and produced by Faith Penhale[5] in 3D, with Nick Hurran directing.[24] On 30 March 2013, a distribution error occurred, and many subscribers to Doctor Who Magazine received the issue five days before the official release date.[10] The issue of the magazine included the official announcement that David Tennant and Billie Piper, who previously played the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler in Doctor Who respectively, were lined up to appear in the special, along with actor John Hurt.[10]

Christopher Eccleston discussed plans for the anniversary episode with Moffat, but eventually declined to return as the Ninth Doctor.[25] Sylvester McCoy, who played the Seventh Doctor, has claimed that none of the surviving actors who portrayed the Doctor prior to Eccleston have been contacted regarding the special.[26] Colin Baker confirmed this while being interviewed on Australian television alongside McCoy and Paul McGann.[27] However, McGann went on to say that he could still be in the 50th but at the last moment.[28] Radio Times has reported rumours that a Doctor from the classic era will feature in the special, citing unknown sources.[29] Freema Agyeman[30] and John Barrowman,[31] who played Tenth Doctor companions Martha Jones and Jack Harkness, respectively, have both stated they will not be in the 50th, but may return to the show at some point. Barrowman stated that he would have liked to be in it, but speculated that the producers wanted to try some different things.[31]

Filming

Filming began on 2 April 2013 in Neath, Wales.[21] On 9 April 2013 scenes were filmed for the special in Trafalgar Square, London.[32] On 17 April 2013 Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper and David Tennant filmed scenes in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales, and some scenes were filmed in Chepstow Castle.[33] On 2 May 2013, scenes in Cardiff were being filmed for scenes that take place at Totter's Lane and Coal Hill school, locations which had previously featured in the very first 1963 serial An Unearthly Child, the 1985 serial Attack of the Cybermen and the 1988 serial Remembrance of the Daleks.[34] Filming for the special was completed on Sunday 5 May 2013.[35]

Marketing

Trailer

The first trailer for the special was shown to attendees of San Diego Comic-Con in July 2013.[36] The BBC's decision not to release the trailer online to international fans was met with controversy.[37][38][39] On 26 July, the BBC responded to criticisms by saying the trailer was intended to be exclusive to Comic-Con attendees and that content for all other audiences would be forthcoming at a later date.[40] The trailer was also screened at The Edinburgh International Television Festival, at the end of Charlotte Moore's "Meet The Controller" session.[citation needed]

Broadcast

The special is due to be shown on BBC One, BBC America and Canada's Space channel[41] on 23 November 2013 at 8pm GMT.[7][42][43] It will also be available in 3D, both via a BBC channel and by cinema screenings as the episode is broadcast on television.[9] The BBC intends to broadcast the episode in all available countries simultaneously in order to avoid plot leaks.[8] It is set to be the world's biggest drama simulcast.[44]

"The Day of The Doctor" is planned to be released on DVD and Blu-ray on 2 December 2013.
