Dhaka topi
A Dhaka topi (Nepali: ढाका टोपी) or Nepali topi (Nepali: नेपाली टोपी) is a type of hat, popular in Nepal. The hat is made of a fabric called dhaka, which is also used for a type of blouse, a dhaka-ko-cholo. The word topi means "hat" in the Nepali as well as Maithali language. Men wear a long kurta dawra suruyal and patuka instead of a belt. It is worn by all hill and himalayan communities. In Terai (Madhesh), it is only worn by Maithali and Tharu people as a source of Pride. Dhaka topis are also given away as gifts during Dashain, Tihar and Chhath festivals.
History
The Dhaka topi is so called because the design of the print can be traced to a traditional weaving and design style originating in Nepal. This is evident when comparing Nepali Dhaka topi designs by hand made machine .[1]
Significance
Nepalis of Mithila, mountain and hills consider Dhaka topi as a source of pride, and it is very much attached to the culture. It is widely worn by government employees, and forms a part of the national dress. Though the history of Dhaka topi is still debated, it is believed to be used by the Nepali people in Terai and hills since at least last two hundred years, and is the replica of Bhadgaunle topi (a black round hat, used in Nepal) made from dhaka fabric.
Manufacture
Topis are generally manufactured in Palpa, Mithila and in the Eastern Region of Nepal mainly Bhojpur. They are made in hand looms set in Nepali homes.
Price
Once can get Dhaka Topis in a range of prices. At 2014 prices, it can cost anywhere from NPR 300 to 3000. Custom designed Dhaka Topis cost a lot more.
