The Amazing Race 10 is the tenth installment of the popular reality television show, The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race 10 features twelve teams of two, with a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the world. Applications were accepted through January 20, 2006 (one week later than the original deadline). Semi-finalist interviews occurred in late February/early March, followed by finalist interviews in Los Angeles during late March and early April. Filming ran from May 27, 2006 to June 25, 2006. The season began with a special 90-minute premiere on September 17, 2006. On October 17, 2006, CBS annouced that the season finale will only air in a single hour on December 10, 2006.

In the premiere episode, host Phil Keoghan promised new "twists and turns" that would be revealed throughout the season.[1] The first of these twists was a double-elimination leg, the first in the show's history. The second was a change in the penalty to a last-place team on a non-elimination leg: rather than being stripped of their cash and possessions, they become "marked for elimination", meaning that unless they placed first in the following leg, they would receive a 30 minute penalty at the mat, possibly allowing teams finishing behind them to overtake them in the final placings for that leg. Leg 8 revealed another twist called the "Intersection" described as forcing teams to work together to complete tasks and making decisions until further notice.

Results

The following teams participated in the Race, with their relationships at the time of filming. Placements are listed in finishing order:

Template:FnbLeg 1 was a double-elimination leg. Bilal & Sa'eed were eliminated first halfway through the leg (see below note), while Vipul & Arti were eliminated at the Pit Stop.
Template:FnbBilal & Sa'eed were the last team to arrive at the Meridian Gate in the Forbidden City, where teams got start times for the next morning. There were only 11 times; they were eliminated in the middle of the leg.
Template:FnbKellie took, but failed to complete, the Roadblock in Leg 2. Already in last, Kellie & Jamie then checked into the Pit Stop and were eliminated.
Template:FnbTom & Terry arrived 2nd, but were assessed a 30 minute time penalty for travelling on motorbikes, which were prohibited to the racers for safety reasons.
Template:FnbDue to an Intersection, two teams worked together to complete the Fast Forward and both were able to skip all remaining tasks and head to the Pit Stop.
Template:FnbDavid & Mary arrived 5th, but were assessed a 30 minute penalty as they were "marked for elimination" and did not arrive at the Pit Stop in 1st. They were not, however, assessed the whole penalty as Lyn & Karyln checked in 10 minutes after the penalty started.
Template:FnbLeg 9 was double-length and shown over two episodes.

  • Red means the team was eliminated.
  • Purple means the team was the last to arrive at a pit stop in a non-elimination leg of the race and was thus "marked for elimination," meaning that if that team did not place first on the next leg, they would receive a 30 minute penalty. Contrary to prior seasons, they were not stripped of their possessions nor money and they were able to receive money on the next leg.
  • Green means the team won the Fast Forward clue.
  • Matching colors of + symbols indicate teams who worked together during part of the leg as a result of the Intersection clue.
  • A yellow > means that team chose to use the Yield; < indicates the team who received it; <> indicates a leg where the Yield was available but not used.

Trivia

General

  • This is the first season to feature two Asian American teams: Erwin & Godwin and Vipul & Arti. Kathy from Season 3 and Charla & Mirna from Season 5 were until this season the only Asian American contestants in TAR history. This is also the first season to feature an Indian American team (Vipul & Arti), a Muslim American team (Bilal & Sa'eed), an amputee (Sarah Reinertsen of Peter & Sarah, who has an artificial leg), and the race's first open lesbian (Lauren Marcoccio of Duke & Lauren).
  • This is the first season to cross the Pacific Ocean in the first leg, as the first legs of previous seasons had teams crossing the Atlantic Ocean or staying on the North America/South America landmass first.
  • Dustin Leigh Konzelman and Kandice Pelletier are former Miss America contestants. Konzelman held the title Miss California 2005 and Pelletier was Miss New York 2005. The beauty queens are two among seven former pageant contestants to compete on The Amazing Race. One other Amazing Race competitor, Kelly McCorkle (Miss South Carolina 2002) of Season 7, has competed in Miss America.
  • This is the third season to feature 12 teams, the other two being Season 3 and Season 4.
  • This was the first season in which two teams were eliminated in the same leg. In the first leg, Bilal & Sa'eed were eliminated after arriving last at the Meridian Gate in order to secure a departure time the next morning. (They were eliminated just 40 minutes after the TV debut). Vipul & Arti were eliminated after arriving last at the pitstop at the Great Wall of China.
  • Due to the Roadblock in the first leg of the race, Sarah reported in a post-race interview on The Finish Line that a single team member can do a maximum of 7 Roadblocks, instead of the usual 6 (as has been in place from Season 6). However, this rule has (to date) not been mentioned during the show itself during Season 10, possibly because of the unaired Roadblock in Mauritius accounting for the extra roadblock.
  • A Fast Forward was offered in conjunction with the Intersection in Leg 8. Mary reported in a post-race interview on The Finish Line that a team could use a Fast Forward for a second time (in this case with a team that had not used a Fast Forward earlier in the race). In previous seasons, teams were allowed to use only one Fast Forward during the entire race.

In-Race

  • A Roadblock was performed in Leg 1. This is the first time a Roadblock has been aired in the first leg of a season (Season 1 had an ostrich egg eating Roadblock, but it was only shown as an extra feature on the DVD).
  • In Leg 2, Peter and Sarah switched their Detour task twice. This is the first time a team has switched Detours twice and still finished first in the same leg.
  • In Leg 3 and Leg 4 (Vietnam), all route markers were white and yellow instead of red and yellow. This was done because the flag of the vanquished South Vietnam also consisted of red and yellow stripes. This is similar to Season 3's Leg 11 in which the teams travelled through Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, however, the route markers were made solid yellow in that season.
  • In Vietnam, teams were not allowed to ride on motorbikes for safety reasons.
  • At the beginning of Leg 3, no teams were given any money nor were they permitted to beg for or sell items in exchange for money. Instead, they had to earn money in the Roadblock.
  • At the beginning of Leg 4, teams received 588,000₫ (dong VND - approximately USD $37) at the start of the leg. This was the first time in race history for the cash distribution to be made in a currency in other than US dollars.
  • A Yield was available in Leg 4 but was not used or aired, according to Mary on The Finish Line. [2]
  • In Leg 6, Peter & Sarah, already in last, upon arrival at the Detour, received a clue instructing them to go directly to the Pit Stop. This has not been done to a team since Andre & Damon of Season 3. Additionally, Peter & Sarah were not received by a greeter at the Pit Stop. This is the first time since Pat & Brenda of Season 1 that a team has been eliminated without a greeter at the end of the leg.
  • During Leg 6, Peter and Sarah's car had a handicap sticker from the state of California.
  • While no Roadblock was shown for Leg 7, a Roadblock clue is clearly visible in Dustin and Kandice's hands in one of the stills for the episode on the show's website. [3]

Post-Race

  • David and Mary appeared on The View. David revealed that he had originally auditioned for Survivor. The couple also received gifts from the show, including vacations, a Ford Explorer, and a new house on the program.[4]

Race locations

Leg 1 (United States → People's Republic of China)

The first Roadblock of The Amazing Race 10 was to eat fish eyes. The first Detour was Labor or Leisure. In Labor, teams had to travel one mile by pedicab and put bricks in a pattern, in a 45 square-foot square. In Leisure, teams had to travel a longer distance to a bay-side park, and then watch locals perform a relaxation exercise called Taiji Bai Long and copy the movements.

Leg 2 (People's Republic of China → Mongolia)

The Detour for this leg was Take It Down or Fill It Up. In Take It Down, teams had take down the cover of a yurt, roll it up, and attach it to a camel. In Fill It Up, teams had to put four water containers on a cart pulled by a hynik, an ox-like animal indigenous to the area. They had to move the cart to a water source, fill the containers up, bring it back, and fill a barrel up to a certain line. The Roadblock was to shoot a flaming arrow and hit a target 160 feet away.

Leg 3 (Mongolia → Vietnam)

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to sell flowers on Vietnamese bicycles - enough to make at least 80,000₫ (dong VND - approximately USD $5). Teams were allowed to keep the money they made. In the Detour, teams chose between Fuel and Fowl. In Fuel, teams had to form wet coal into round bricks, a traditional Vietnamese fuel source. In Fowl, teams had to construct an intricate traditional Vietnamese birdcage.

Leg 4 (Vietnam)

This leg's Roadblock was to use an ascender to climb a large rock face, receive the clue and then rappel down. The Detour was Over or Under. Teams were taken to the water by a junk, then given a sampan to row. In Over, teams had to row to a provisions ship, load the provisions, then row to a floating village to make two deliveries. In Under, teams had to row to an oyster farm and grab 30 baskets from the water.

Leg 5 (Vietnam → India)

The Detour in this leg was Wild Things or Wild Rice. In Wild Things, teams had to go to the Madras Crocodile Bank and help the workers wrangle a marsh crocodile to move it to a new pit. In Wild Rice, teams had to use colored powder made from rice to color an intricate floral design. For the Roadblock, one team member had to take a driving test that would allow them to obtain an Indian driver's license.

Leg 6 (India → Kuwait)

The first of only two Fast Forwards on the Race was to get the Fast Forward clue from a cluebox right next to a simulated oil fire, braving temperatures of over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The Roadblock on this leg was to climb a ladder to the top of one of the Kuwait Towers and get a satchel filled with puzzle pieces. They then had to go to the ground and assemble the puzzle to reveal their next destination. The Detour on this leg was Manual or Automatic. In Manual, teams had to fill ten 110 lb bags of camel feed and stack them up. In Automatic, teams went to the Kuwait Camel Racing Club and had to use a walkie-talkie to make a voice activated robotic jockey whip a camel. They had to make the camel run a 140 yard course.

Leg 7 (Kuwait → Mauritius)

In this leg's Detour, teams had to choose between Salt or Sea. In Salt, teams had to search through three giant piles of salt for a salt shaker containing their next clue. In Sea, teams had to travel by motorboat to an island two and a half miles away and search the island using a map to find the boat's sail. After finding it, they had to attach it to the boat and sail back. While no Roadblock was shown for this leg of the race, a Roadblock clue is clearly visible in Dustin and Kandice's hands in one of the stills for the episode on the show's website. [3] [5]

Leg 8 (Mauritius → Madagascar)

At the Intersection, teams had to join with one other team to complete tasks and make decisions together until further notice, including completing the Fast Forward. The second Fast Forward on the Race was to go to a market and eat one full serving of cow lips, a local delicacy. The Detour on this leg of the Race was Long Sleep or Short Letter. In Long Sleep, teams had to deliver 8 covered mattresses through the streets of Antananarivo to a certain address. In Short Letter, teams had to work together to successfully make 28 pieces of paper. After the Detour, teams were not required to work together anymore. The Roadblock on this leg was to go to stairs filled with rubber stamp vendors and find four stamps that matched ones on their clues. Once finished, they would proceed to the Pit Stop, where their teammate was waiting.

Leg 9, first half (Madagascar → Finland)

In this leg's Detour, teams had to decide between Swamp This or Swamp That. Both options are methods by which Finnish athletes keep themselves in shape during the warmer months. Swamp This was cross country skiing through bog, and Swamp That was an obstacle course through bog. The Roadblock for the leg was to search the mine for a marked dig site and get a piece of limestone. They then had to use tools to break it open to get their next clue, which was inside of it. As an additional task, each team member had to rappel face-first down from the top of the tower of the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.
