Please help to stop an edit war in Merge sort

It all broke out when a user removed an illustration (special:Diff/887750333), which has been there for about 13 years (see Special:Permalink/91583531#Analysis). His edit summary seemed untrue and confusing to me, so I asked him for some explanation for his action (User talk page#Merge sort). He gave a reply at Talk:Merge_sort#animation which I do not comprehend. Anyway, I don't think the removal makes a big harm, whether justified or not, so I just left the talk.

However, some other user seems to think the image was important, and reinstated it (Special:Diff/888502969) improving the caption at the same time (Special:Diff/888502969) to explain what aspect of the algorithm it depicts. The remover removed the image again, even though he has declared before:

if you really think it's better to include, then feel free to put it back; I won't continue to object.

Neither my level of English nor my mediating skills entitle me to intervene in this conflict (the more so because I initially have been on one side of the barricade, even though there was no barricade yet at the time). Could you, please, ask both parties to stop wasting their time for warring and resolve the conflict in a civilized manner? --CiaPan (talk) 23:30, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, that was REALLY fast! :) CiaPan (talk) 23:33, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi CiaPan! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns and your request for help. I obviously can't cite my personal experience and career (since it would be original research), but I can definitely tell you that the .gif animation removed from the article absolutely depicts a merge sort. ;-) From the image, you can see that the algorithm divides the list of numbers into smaller sub-groups, sorts them, and then sorts the larger sub-groups up until the entire list is sorted. I believe that his response to you is simply stating that the animation doesn't show what he believes should be. I don't agree, but my opinion is irrelevant when acting as a neural party and purely in an administration role. From there, Jrheller1 restores the image, then Deacon Vorbis reverts the restoration, and things go back-and-forth from there....
I've applied full protection to the article and will apply it to any other articles that this edit war is affecting, and I'll be warning both users involved in regards to edit warring and following Wikipedia's dispute resolution protocol to discuss the dispute and come to a consensus. Please let me know if I can do anything else for you, and I'll be happy to do so. Please don't hestitate to let me know if you see any other articles or pages that this dispute is affecting and I'll be happy to take a look and handle it. :-) Thanks again for the message, and I wish you a great rest of your day. ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:42, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Osh! Thank you for all the precise explanation, both on the image in question and on actions you took. AFAIR, I did not reveal my professional experience at Wikipedia, too, but ...with decades[The exact number available via e-mail on request.] spent on computer programming I have no problems with interpreting and understanding the dot-cloud illustrations of sorting algorithms. My question to Deacon was not 'what does the animation depict' but rather 'why do you think it's not what all belive it is'. I know the image is correct, and I think it is appropriate in the article. Anyway, if it is any problem for User:DV, I would let him have the image deleted. It wouldn't harm much.
I'm not happy though to see edit warring on such detail, and that's why I turned to you. Just for moderation. Thank you once again - and yes, be sure I know where to find you, should I ever need any administrative help again! Good day, good night. It's 1:30 AM here, time to go to bed. --CiaPan (talk) 00:27, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
CiaPan - You bet; always happy to help. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:54, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • The animated image conflicts with the algorithms presented in the article. What the animation depicts is a merge sort implemented using a queue instead of a stack (recursion). A queue based implementation results in a breadth first repeated splitting of the array until the size of runs is reduced to 1 element per run. The queue approach is not normally done because the queue space complexity is O(n), and the queue approach is not mentioned anywhere in the article. A stack approach is depth first, left first: the array split in two, the left half split in two, the left quarter split in two, ..., then and only when the leftmost two runs of size 1 are produced does the merge process begin, following the stack chain up and dawn in a depth first, left first order. A simpler fix would be to show a bottom up approach. In one step, the initial array is separated into n runs of size 1 (this is really not a step, as the array is just treated as n runs of size 1 without any actual data manipulation), then typically even and odd runs are merged in breadth first order. This would only require removing the intermediate split steps shown in the animation. Rcgldr (talk) 21:40, 21 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Rcgldr - Thank you for responding to this discussion and for providing your input. If the .gif animation is inconsistent with the other images, media, and examples published in the same article, I agree that it using examples, images, and animations based off different and inconsistent assumptions would be potentially confusing to readers. Consistency is absolutely essential when it comes to making article content easy to read and follow, and I take absolutely no issue with your (and other editors' efforts) to resolve these inconsistencies. My data structures class assignments and labs were mostly focused on building each sort so that they work with linked lists and arrays of lists, not so-much queues and stacks (though the application of such would definitely be common in the wild) - this information is what I didn't see when I took a look at the article, so I really appreciate you for clarifying and for explaining the issue.
My concerns here were mostly over the edit warring and disruption that occurred on the article, and not who was correct, what content is incorrect or missing, or whether or not any of the content, media, animations, or images needed fixing or improving. The disruption is where I step in and with the "administrator hat" on, where the root of the issues concerned me, and was ultimately what needed to stop. The content-related issues and concerns, while being the cause and the reason behind the edit warring and disruption that occurred, are things where the details are mostly irrelevant in regards to the disruption and the need for it to stop. They're things that I direct the editors involved to go and work out among themselves, discuss on the article's talk page, and refer to Wikipedia's dispute resolution protocol in order to properly resolve. I obviously can't do that part for anybody... :-)
Anyways, I hope that my response here helped to clarify where my main concerns were in regards to this dispute and discussion and where I step in and take appropriate administrative actions. Anything outside of that is (for the most part) irrelevant and where it's up to the editors involved to discuss and resolve, not for me to step in and fix. ;-) Thanks again for the input and for clarifying the issue and what exactly is being seen as problematic. I appreciate it very much and I hope you have a great day. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:52, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sock?

Hi,

Could this user be a sock of Caidin-Johnson you reckon? Thanks. Adam9007 (talk) 23:47, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Adam9007! What exactly makes you suspect or believe that this account is a sock puppet of Caidin-Johnson? More information would help me to be able to take a look. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:50, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
He uses usernames related to Bugs Bunny a lot. Adam9007 (talk) 23:51, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Adam9007 - Ah... I figured that was the reason, but I wanted to ask in case you had other information as well. I've seen LTA and troll accounts created lately that depicted Loony Tunes characters and what-not, so I wouldn't be surprised if you were correct. What I can tell you is that this account has no deleted edits or anything that you can't see. This account (as of right now) hasn't made any edits or tripped any filters or logs. Let's keep an eye on this account's edits, logs, and filter logs; if you start to see any shenanigans begin, let me know and I'll take a look and take what actions are needed. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:54, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's begun! Adam9007 (talk) 00:26, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Adam9007 - Heh, that didn't take long... I may not be sure if the user is a sock as you asked about, but I'm definitely sure that this user isn't here to help us... So it's been indef'd. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:35, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Thanks for the new user rights and thanking my revert. It is definitely helpful. Mynamemeansnothing (talk) 00:03, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mynamemeansnothing! You're welcome. :-) Keep up the good work; you're doing a great job. Continue to do what you're doing and don't fall into any trouble, and in a month or so (after you've made an established amount of reverts, warnings, and reports at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism) I'll make you a rollbacker. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:08, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Learning the ropes!

Hi! I just wanted to thank you for your kind words on my talk page earlier, and thought I'd ask for some advice on how I can better combat vandalism. So far I've been using Twinkle and following the recent changes page, but I'd love to know if there's anything I can improve / any way I can get more involved. Vwilding (talk) 00:04, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vwilding! You're very welcome! I'm happy that my message earlier brought you happiness and encouragement. Excellent question! The page on recent changes patrolling is a great start. Since you have Twinkle installed, the top half of the page won't be very useful since Huggle handles what it's detailing for you automatically. However, the bottom half of the page is extremely useful and provides a ton of great information and links that you'll find to your liking. You should also check out this page as well as this one; both are lists of all the different tools, applications, and scripts that you can enable and use to help make patrolling and removing vandalism much easier.
What tool or page do you use to monitor changes and find edits that may be vandalism? When I was new to patrolling for vandalism, I used Lupin's Anti-vandal Tool (now a very old tool that's mostly forgotten) to list the changes that were likely vandalism. Look through those pages and find a tool to do this and that you're comfortable with and feel is easy for you to use. Another good place to browse through is the counter-vandalism unit page, which will contain a great deal of good information as well. Once you get comfortable with patrolling and reverting vandalism, and you've been making consistent good reverts, warnings, and adding good reports to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism - you'll be able to request and be granted additional user rights, which allow you to patrol, monitor, edit, and handle disruption in even more places and areas.
For now, just give those pages a read, and let me know if you have any questions about them. I'm happy to help, I have the ability to edit your .js and .css pages (so if you need help with installing a script, let me know), and can assist with anything you need; just message me and ask. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:33, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

RevDel, please

Found this [1] little nugget, could you possible rev-delete it? Mynamemeansnothing (talk) 00:10, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mynamemeansnothing!  Done. Next time you need to report any edits that need rev del or suppression, email those to me instead; you don't want to post them on Wikipedia publicly. As an example: My user talk page (this page) is currently on 924 editors' watchlists, which allows them to immeditately know when someone has made an edit to it. If you know about the Streisand effect, users who see your edit pop up on their watchlist and notice that you're making a revision deletion request will quickly run to the edit diff you provided so they can view it before it becomes hidden to them. We want to avoid this as much as possible, which is why all rev del and oversight requests need to be emailed privately. ;-) No worries though; I handled it quickly, and it's not a big deal. Thanks for the message and for the request, and please don't hesitate to let me know if you run into any more edits that need to be redacted. I'll be happy to do so. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:20, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again,

I'm pretty sure this is in the wrong place, but not sure enough to boldly move it. I assume it's meant to be in the creator's userspace. Can drafts have subpages? Should I just leave it? Thanks. Adam9007 (talk) 03:27, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Adam9007! Generally, no... draft pages should not have sub-pages, since they're supposed to be put together in the same manner that live articles are (just in a different namespace and with "Draft:" at the beginning of the title). ;-) It looks like the user accidentally.... He must've..... umm.... yeah, he messed up somehow.... LOL. It's formatted and written almost as if it's an article, and it's in the draft space.... but the content is clearly worded as if this is supposed to be this editor's user page. It's like two creations got morphed into one and then somehow cast into the abyss, which we're seeing now.... Weird.... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:32, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There are plenty of similar pages in userspace. There's a course by the University of Sydney going on, so there are a lot of new editors doing similar things. Adam9007 (talk) 03:34, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Adam9007 - Ah! Okay, I think this is a test/pre-draft page created by the user. On the editor's user page, he/she indicates being in a class titled "OLES2129" (which is path of that sub-page title), and I see other edits the user has made that appear to be test edits as well. Same thing probably goes with other users in the same class. I think we should just leave things where they are, and leave a message on the user's talk page and ask if they need help. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:37, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I sent them the standard student's welcome if that's any good? All other 'OLES2129/draft' pages I've seen are in userspace. Adam9007 (talk) 03:39, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Adam9007 - Good enough for me! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:39, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

IP Address

Hi again,

Is there any way of knowing whether [[REDACTED - Oshwah] this] was in fact Nche9147? If it was, should the IP address be hidden? Cheers. Adam9007 (talk) 03:50, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again,Adam9007! Long time no chat! ;-) Given that the page was created and edited only by this user and for his class / assignment, I'd say that the IP user is almost certainly Nche9147 and I went ahead and suppressed the IP address. Next time you need to report any edits that may need rev del or suppression, email those to me instead; you don't want to post them on Wikipedia publicly. As a perfect example that applies here: My user talk page is currently on the watchlist of 924 editors, and if you know about the Streisand effect, users who see your edit here and notice that you're making a revision deletion request will quickly run to the edit diff you provided so they can view it before it becomes hidden to them. We want to avoid this as much as possible, which is why all rev del and oversight requests need to be emailed privately. ;-) No worries though; I handled it quickly, so we should be okay. Thanks for the message and for bringing the edit to my attention so that I could take care of it. ;-) Please don't hesitate to let me know if you run into any more edits that need to be redacted and I'll be happy to take a look. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:58, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Greensborough college page recent protection mistake

Hello, I requested protection for a school page not long ago (not under this account but I had to make one to talk here) after an ongoing edit war with what is more than likely students of the school. Our Social media, Wikipedia page and even website have been constantly bombarded with trolls, fake negative reviews and in general things that will hurt the reputation of our college and it is getting hard to keep under control.

The problem we are most concerned about in regards to the Wikipedia page is the editing of the principals name. It’s been through several stages of trolling over the past few months but has largely increased very recently. Recently it has been being changed to the name of a principal (Pauline Barker) who worked at the school for a few weeks but was fired quickly after making seriously offensive comments directed towards children that I would prefer not to go into for obvious reasons. This became a popular ‘joke’ amongst the students of our school and we have received many negative reviews and edits to this page because of it. Just for clarification, the principal of the school at this point in time is Ryan Shields, although this is likely to change in the near future.

Annoyingly, it appears a troll managed to edit the page before it was locked, as the name Pauline Barker is currently still on the page. As I am no longer able to edit the page due to the lock, I was hoping you could assist in the change, as having that name stuck there for good will likely be quite harmful to the schools reputation, as the public opinion of this person is far from positive.

If it matters, we are currently working on identifying and punishing those who are purposefully ruining the schools reputation online.

Thank you for your cooperation, hopefully you understand the situation we are dealing with at the moment. Hopefully I commented in the right place to fix this. Thank you very much

-Chris Talton, Leading teacher, Greensborough College ChrisTalton2 (talk) 08:46, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Doppelgänger account

Hi Oshwah! Please create a doppelgänger account named S49S for me. Due to technical reason I couldn't create this account. Thanks. ~SS49~ {talk} 10:25, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SS49! Sure, not a problem. The best way for me to do this for you and in the fastest way is to have you go to this page, and follow the instructions and fill out the form to request an account - just put in the comment field that Oshwah sent you here and that you're requesting this as a doppelgänger. Once you do this, respond to me here with the ACC Request ID# that's emailed to you. From there, I can just navigate straight to your request, create the account for you, and have it registered under your email and other information automatically. Then you'll have total control of the doppelgänger account and with much less risk of it somehow becoming compromised. Can you do this for me? Let me know if you get stuck anywhere and I'll be happy to help. :-) Thanks - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:04, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
[ACC #261095] I had requested this few days ago and it is still pending so I couldn't request again. Thanks. ~SS49~ {talk} 12:44, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
SS49 - Oh perfect! I'll handle this request now and get you set up. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:59, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
SS49 - You're all set! I've created the account for you and emailed you its temporary password, redirected its user and user talk pages to your main account, and blocked it as a registered doppelgänger for security purposes since it won't ever actually be used for anything at all. You just need to log into the account, change the password to something strong, and confirm the email address in Special:Preferences so that the account is linked to your email; I've taken care of everything else for you. Please let me know if I help you with anything else, and I'll be happy to do so. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:09, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much Oshwah. Much appreciated. ~SS49~ {talk} 16:28, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
SS49 - No problem; always happy to lend a hand ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:35, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to be rude but could I get a reply? Greensborough College page mistake

Very sorry to seem impatient and demanding but this is a problem that we need fixed as soon as possible and ive noticed you’ve been online but not responding to my two messages.

If I am getting something wrong and you aren’t able to respond to them I am super sorry but please understand that I am really I need of a resolution to this problem and at the moment it would appear my messages have not come through or are being ignored.

This is in relation to the Greensborough college editing ‘wars’ which have been occurring. I am hoping to get proof into you as early as tomorrow but as soon as a solution can be reached the better, as this is a time in which our reputation needs to be perfect.

Please note that in your original reply, you stated that I was repeatedly changing the Wikipedia to something it was not supposed to be (Pauline Barker to Ryan Shields). But actually, the correct name, Ryan Shields has been in place for months, before the recent trolling began. I was only reverting the edits of the trolls, not changing what was supposed to be there.

Hopefully you understand and we can get this changed as soon as possible. If you have the time, please read through my three messages to get a full idea of the situation.

Once again, terribly sorry to be rude but this is extremely important to our school.

-Chris ChrisTalton2 (talk) 10:29, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Chris Talton, even though I used to assume good faith when interacting with new Wikipedia users, I still have more confidence in what Victoria State Education Department says than you as semi-anonymous individual – and you can see what they say here:
https://www.education.vic.gov.au/findaservice/SchoolDetails.aspx?ID=DD676791-2F92-DE11-B28C-002185CD8E14
So please kindly ask the State Govt to update their records, then Wikipedia can fix its article based on official data.

There's also the schools webpage at [2]. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:04, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, now I saw this [3]. ChrisTalton2, I'm afraid we're stuck atm. The school webpage and the government webpage are "published" per WP:RELIABLE SOURCES, and that is something we feel strongly about (when we notice we should, anyway). A new newsletter on this page would be ok too, I think. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:34, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@ChrisTalton2 and Gråbergs Gråa Sång: Here's yet another source: the recent Greensborough Focus, Issue 3, 08 March 2019 with a Principal's Report in it, signed by ...Ms Pauline Barker, Principal. --CiaPan (talk) 11:53, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's why I asked for a new one. But who knows, though the internet seems to know nothing atm, perhaps there will be newspaper articles in a while. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:59, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've checked randomly some older issues of Greensborough Focus, and I found Ms Barker has been signing the Principal's column since Issue 1, 10 Feb 2017 — so it is a pure misinformation that she “worked at the school for a few weeks but was fired quickly”... --CiaPan (talk) 12:04, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Truthful hyperbole? There's a lot of that around. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:16, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, I've got my own, personal friend, haha! Special:Diff/888631934 --CiaPan (talk) 12:25, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
CiaPan, some people have several. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:42, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
LOL... I have a lot more "friends" than those that are listed there.... :-P ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:45, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
...and he's gone to a sock-puppet trash bin before I managed to reply. :( --CiaPan (talk) 13:26, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(Oshwah, thank you for bearing with me. And I promise to not extend this thread any more, IMHO we gathered enough evidence for a judgement or action, if any appears necessary. CiaPan (talk))
CiaPan - HA! I don't care if you extend it. ;-) If the discussion is necessary... or even if it's just providing you and others with humor, fun, or needed time away from stressful and tough issues or discussions - I don't have any problem with it at all... (so long as it's positive in nature and not being disrespectful or uncivil to others, of course) :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:38, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi ChrisTalton2, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns. I understand that this is an urgent matter to you, and I apologize for the delay responding to your messages here. Unfortunately, there are times where I cannot respond to messages on my user talk page right away - usually because I have urgent matters and high priority tasks on my plate that need my full and immediate attention, or because I'm currently assisting another editor with their requests for help. In these cases, I simply ask for your patience and understanding; I'm more than happy to assist you once I've finished with the tasks currently in front of me. :-) As CiaPan and Gråbergs Gråa Sång have both pointed out above and with numerous references and sources, there appears to be no verifiable reliable sources or evidence to show that Ryan Shields is the current president of the school; every source that's been found and listed here, in the article, and on its talk page - all state in one way or another that Pauline Barker is the current president. If this information is incorrect, you should contact the school, point the sources and information out to them, and request them to update it (as also explained above by CiaPan and Gråbergs Gråa Sång). Until reliable sources show that the president of the school has in-fact changed, the information in the article will remain as-is. On an encyclopedia, hands-down and 100% of the time: it's always better to have information that's out-of-date but well-sourced, verifiable, and accurate at the time of its writing, than to have any information or content in an article that's unverified, poorly-referenced, inaccurate, or false. This is why you're seeing the responses by other editors in the manner that you are. Please let me know if you have any more questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. Thanks for the message, I hope that you understand, and I wish you a great day and happy editing. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:35, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
CiaPan, Gråbergs Gråa Sång - Whelp, that sucks.... lol. This user has just been checkuser blocked as a sock puppet. All that time and effort put into researching and responding to this editor... Oh well! Heh, I guess that's why there were no sources to support the user's claims... probably because they weren't true at all. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:17, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I knew that. I have noticed the 'Ryan Shields' surname misspelled along with other obvious fun-vandalism in a single edit by some IP-editor. Didn't bother to point that out, though, as I was more interested in verifying Pauline Barker is in the position than that Ryan Shields is not. --CiaPan (talk) 13:26, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
A good example of WP:s immunesystem working as it should, then. We have valiantly and righteously defended Pauline Barker's position as principal, and can be content with that. Now, should we consider deleting that article? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:12, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Gråbergs Gråa Sång - Indeed! This situation is a great example as to why we ask for reliable sources when users add content to articles that isn't referenced. This is also why it's very important to always maintain complete civility and respond respectfully to all inquiries, messages, and push-back and with the assumption of good faith, but we also don't back down from our original concerns regarding their edits and why they were not in compliance with important policies or guidelines. It's up to us to enforce and re-iterate the importance and the need for all users and editors to follow Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and we did very well in doing so above. We directed the user to have the school update their websites and content if they were inaccurate, and we kept to the bottom line: that we follow what's stated in reliable references, and that unreferenced changes and original research isn't allowed. Overall, we did a great job here, and I appreciate the help. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:08, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gråbergs Gråa Sång - I think that the information in the article is accurate and true as it is right now, given the number of references that support this. If it turns out not to be, someone will surely update it and with proper references and sources cited. I'm not too worried about it. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:39, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding my last edit for Qazi Tauqeer

Hi Oshwah, You Have a nice name between i am a huge fan of osho.. i wanted to make some changes to his article but i could feel some typo problem but while correction some error occurred and could not edit it properly ...due to some improper logarithm and change of him being a singer was changed because in a show he was not a singer but of course an aspiring and learner ...

Thanks for being on the other side to correct the error

Hey Oshwah

Sorry for not providing a source. The truth is I'm a student at EHS and just like to make sure the page is as updated as possible. Sorry for any troubles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pkte (talkcontribs) 16:02, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pkte! Thanks for leaving me a message here regarding an edit you made to Wikipedia. No problem; you're new here and this is how you learn... we don't go after editors who make good faith mistakes if their intention was to be bold and improve the encyclopedia. When making edits and changes, we ask that references are provided to support this information if it isn't common knowledge. We also don't accept original research, which is content based off your own experience, relationships, interactions, research, or other self-made or self-published references (basically, "citing yourself"). Just locate reliable sources and cite them in-line with your changes and you'll be good to go. If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. Thanks again for the message and I hope you have a great day. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:05, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Richard Saucedo bio

I was just looking up Richard saucedo (composer)’s bio. According to the article, he died last weekend. Except he is, at this very moment, conducting in Pittsburgh. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1016:B023:2F93:4457:E9FC:625A:F6DC (talk) 18:10, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) Looks like vandalism added here on March 15, the day before he supposedly died. Anyway the article has lots of issues, and may not meet BLP for an article. - BilCat (talk) 18:36, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The same IP also added that he died on February 3, 2019! The IPs only edits have been to this page, but other IPs have vandalized in the same timeframe. It might be a good idea to semi-protect it for a while. Im also considering an AFD, as the only source is a bio page on his employer's website. - BilCat (talk) 18:46, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've now sent it to AFD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Richard Saucedo (2nd nomination). - BilCat (talk) 21:57, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
BilCat - Thanks for looking into this and for filing an AFD. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:09, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there! See the responses above by BilCat. It's apparent that this article has many problems and has been nominated for deletion per Wikipedia's articles for deletion process. Hi,

Would you mind redacting 2601:180:103:AA4E:560:16EF:1000:30B7 (talk · contribs · WHOIS)'s edits on Adrien Broner? I saw that you redacted some other edits on that page earlier. Clear egregious BLP violations. Thanks. 78.101.191.112 (talk) 06:44, 21 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Done. :-) Next time you need to report any edits that need rev del or suppression, email those to me instead; you don't want to post them on Wikipedia publicly. We want to avoid this as much as possible, which is why all rev del and oversight requests need to be emailed privately. ;-) No worries though; I handled it quickly, so it's very unlikely that other editors viewed it. Thanks for the message and for the request, and please don't hesitate to let me know if you run into any more edits that need to be redacted. I'll be happy to do so. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:56, 21 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response, and the redact. I will follow that advice in the future. There is one thing that you can do, though. Help: File a SPI

Hi, I am unable to file a SPI because the page has been locked. Can you file this case for me? I suspect Alibaloshi12 (talk · contribs) to be sockpuppet of Abhishek9779 (talk · contribs) Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Abhishek977. I am providing diffs to support my claim.

This is not Mountain157 (talk · contribs) and you can verify this by checking their frivolous SPI filings and incompetence in the matter. If you do feel that this passes the smell test, can you also check for other sleepers of the same account. 27.106.106.26 (talk) 22:53, 22 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I took a look at the SPI archives for Abhishek9779, and Alibaloshi12 was investigated only a few days ago, so there's no need for me to file this SPI. You may wish to protect Anna Frodesiak's talk page for some time to prevent edits that require revdel. Thank you.111.220.164.171 (talk) 02:59, 23 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I made a thread at the Teahouse relating to this. Thank you.111.220.164.171 (talk) 11:15, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your questions and concerns. To answer your first question: I would bring your concerns to CaradhrasAiguo directly and ask why he believed that your message was spam, and ask why he removed it without taking it seriously or answering it at all. It read to me like you were simply messaging him and asking for an opinion (which doesn't seem harmful to me...), but he might've seen things differently. The best way to get an answer to your question and have your concerns resolved is to message him on his user talk page and politely express your concerns directly and ask. I obviously can't answer that question for him; all I can say is that I didn't see your message as spam, but again... there are always two sides and two views to every story, and he's the one who can answer your questions. I obviously can't. :-)
Thanks for pointing me to Anna Frodesiak's user talk page. You are correct in that the messages left were not acceptable, and I've suppressed them from being viewable by anybody. If you see messages like this in the future that attempt to "out", or disclose someone's private information like that, please email them to me privately instead. We don't want such requests to be made publicly anywhere on Wikipedia, since it will draw attention to the edits or messages by other people that wouldn't have done so otherwise. For example: My user talk page is actively watched by 928 different editors, which means that they receive a notification on their watchlist each time this page is updated or edited. If you know the Streisand effect, you'll know that drawing attention to edits like these is something we want to avoid at all costs: People will see this message, realize that you're making a revision deletion or suppression request and that information is about to become restricted and hidden from being viewable to them... so naturally, they'll rush to the page, find the edits, and read the information before it becomes hidden. So next time, just email me these requests instead. :-)
Thanks, and please let me know if you have any more questions or need my help with anything else, and I'll be more than happy to answer them and lend you a hand. ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:44, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Update: It looks like you created a discussion on the Wikipedia Teahouse as you indicated here, and others have responded with their individual input (permalink). Even if CaradhrasAiguo doesn't respond to it directly, I think it might be worth it to just drop the matter entirely (given the number of input and responses to your question that have provided more context and agreed that your message was disruptive) and move on. Their answers seem to provide sufficient context and additional details to the issue and story that weren't provided here, which is why I held off on giving too much input other than to suggest that you talk to the user directly. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:53, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
1. I can't email you. 2. Please see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Chess_Championship_2018 (edits from November 2018 regarding framework if you know what I mean), 211.27.126.189's talk page (formerly me but IP's change), WP:ANEW Archives 379 (discussions 11 and 44) and 380 (discussion 37). CaradhrasAiguo knows I'm problematic with edit warring. He can't have done such things just so someone gets blocked.111.220.164.171 (talk) 12:13, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source/license for File

AndycBtn (talk) 15:25, 23 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AndycBtn, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your questions! I apologize for the delay responding to your message; I've been busy with real life obligations, and I'm just now getting myself all caught up with all the Wikipedia messages, emails, and requests for help that were left while I was busy. :-)
To answer your question: All images or files uploaded to Wikipedia, the Wikimedia Commons, or any other Wikimedia site must have their license information provided along with the file on its relevant file page. Is it an image that's in the public domain and therefore free to be used without any restriction? Is the image copyrighted or is its use restricted in any way? If so, what copyright license is the file under? Is fair use justified with this image? If so, why? What fair use guidelines are met that allow this image to be used and shown in articles on Wikipedia? Having the image's license information added to its file page in order to disclose its restrictions, origin, and use ability is what will answer all of the questions above.
For more information on copyrights and how to add license information to your uploaded image, please see Wikipedia's policy and guideline pages on image use policy (copyright section), copyrights (in general), and Wikipedia's policy and guidelines on non-free content. These pages will not only answer your questions, but will also help you understand copyrights in general, the importance with knowing and declaring them with images, files, and media, and which images we accept and do not accept due to their copyright status. If you have any questions after reading through all of these pages I listed for you here, please feel free to let me know and I'll be happy to answer them and help you further.
Thanks again for leaving your message here with your questions, as well as for being diligent and taking care to follow the notices and warnings that are given to you and follow-up with them (as opposed to just ignoring them and doing what you want without care... lol) - keep up the excellent work, and I wish you happy editing! :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:28, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I just blocked this IP range again for one month. Just looking at their edits made today shows mostly disruptive changes and uncivil responses to their user talk page. Hi again, Yashkkaryan! Thanks for following up here with your questions and concerns. Next time you wish to re-open or refer to a discussion that's been archived here, you just need to add a link to point there (an example is the link I put in the text above describing what was collapsed); there's no need for you to spend all that time copying and pasting the discussion. ;-) Adding a simple link is much easier for myself, as well as for you... lol. I apologize for the delay responding to your message; I've been busy with real life obligations, and I'm just now getting myself all caught up with all the Wikipedia messages, emails, and requests for help that were left while I was busy. :-)
It looks like the content you tried to add to the Kalpana Mohan article since we last talked was reverted by Bbb23, and I'm not exactly sure as to why he reverted it. Have you left a message on Bbb23's user talk page and talked to him directly about your edits? I would go there and ask him about it directly, as he'll obviously be able to answer your questions regarding the reverting of your changes better than I can; I can't speak for Bbb23 directly. If you have any more questions or need my assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be more than happy to help you further. However, for your questions here, I must divert you over to Bbb23 so that you two can discuss the matter directly. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:51, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Query on how to add the correct "tags" for the uploaded file - Ashley Artus Wiki Profile pic.jpg for the Wiki page - Ashley Artus

Hi Oshwah

Just messaging again as not heard back from you ?

Unless you're on holiday or something ?

Being a newbie & understanding how everything works in Wiki...some things I am having a problem with understanding what steps to take next...

So...the pic was uploaded & as far as I can tell it has been accepted (I think? not sure)

So I understand that I have to put the correct "Copyright tags" in for the pic...

This is where I am stuck !!

Its saying that I need to put the tag in on the "File Description page" but I'm not sure what/where that is ? Is it the Ashley Artus Wiki Profile pic.jpg page?

It also says "Please copy the URL of this image or article in the email to assist OTRS volunteers to find it. If an email cannot be found in the OTRS system, the content may be deleted for lack of valid licensing information."

I did send a message the other day (about a week ago)...but have not received any reply ?

Apologies if you have been busy, but I could really do with getting this last part of the page sorted as then it will be finished !

Look forward to hearing from you,

Hi AndycBtn! Please see the response I just made to your first discussion above. I apologize for the delay responding to you here, and I hope that the response I made above is helpful. If you have any more questions, please let me know by following up with the original discussion above that I replied to. It's easier for the both of us if we keep our communication and responses within the same discussion. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:54, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting to unblock my username:

Hi Wikipedia team, Glad to connect with you!!!

My username is Chennai Port And Dock Educational Trust Higher Secondary School - Chennai I have created an account to upload a school. I was collecting information(school information) after logging into the account. But I didn't start yet. My username is blocked as per the Wikipedia expiry time policy. I request you to consider and kindly unblock my username. Also have few doubts: 1) Whether username can be unblocked? 2) How much time it will take to unblock? 2) Is there any alternate options?

Hi Chennai Port AND Dock Educational Trust Hr Sec School! As stated above by Gareth Griffith-Jones, the reason that your account was blocked is described on your user talk page along with some instructions you'll want to follow in order to resolve the issues and have your account unblocked. Creating new accounts in order to get around your original block, while I feel that you did so because you were confused and needed help, is a serious violation of Wikipedia policy (as outlined here); doing this will only make things significantly more harder for you in terms of getting your account unblocked. Just follow the instructions using your original account, and you'll be able to resolve the matters and be unblocked easily. Good luck! :-) - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:01, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

David Cone Edit Battle

Oshwah, just a heads up that someone has reversed your reversal of an edit to the "Retirement" section of David Cone's page. This is actually the latest in a series of edits and reversals for this section, and always the same changes - removing all references to Cone's eldest son Brian, and revisions concerning Cone's fiancé, Taja Abitbol. I noticed this change/reversal in January, and the process keeps repeating itself every few weeks. Different IP addresses each time. Not sure if this is trolling, or personal/family issues for David Cone. I sent a message to one of the IP addresses, noting that this change could be hurtful to the involved parties if not verified. No response. Fm451 (talk) 05:16, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fm451, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns regarding the David Cone article and some edits that have recently been made. Looking at the edit history, I see that some IP users removed some content from it back on the 27th and 28th of February and due to being unreferenced and likely untrue. These removals seem completely legitimate to me given that they lacked any kind of references or citations. Not only are removals of this kind okay to be made, we encourage it. Editors can remove any unreferenced content (especially if the content is potentially negative, contentious, or controversial in nature) that exists on articles that are biographies of living people (or "BLPs" for short). We must scrutinize the content on BLP articles much more carefully than we do with other articles, and any content that isn't referenced by reliable sources that are secondary and independent of the subject are to be removed on sight if they are potentially negative, contentious, or damaging in any way. The onus is on the editors who are adding such content to provide the necessary references and that meet the requirements for being considered reliable.
Thanks for reaching out to the users directly and asking them about the edits that concern you. If their responses don't satisfy your concerns or answer your questions, or if edits continue to be made to the article that you feel aren't necessary, please let me know and I'll be happy to take another look. Thanks again for the message and for your diligence with this article. I hope you have a great rest of your day and I wish you happy editing. :-D Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:13, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Oshwah: This is one account I'd ask you to block immediately for spam and nonsense. WP:TEND WP:COMPETENCE WP:NOTHERE. — Smuckola(talk) 18:56, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Smuckola - I think we need to hold off on running toward administrative action at this time and spend more time trying to help and educate the user first. While they certainly have made some edits that others would see as disruptive and annoying, I believe that they're good faith attempts to be bold and try to help. I also see some edits that I believe are legitimate and even good ideas, such as their creation of 286 protected mode - a redirect page that you tagged for speedy deletion and an admin declined by inappropriately using rollback (I've since brought this up to the admin and talked to him about it). If, after reasonable attempts have been made to reach out to this user, talk to him/her, and ask them to review policy and offer to educate and help them - they continue to make disruptive edits and its blatantly apparent that they're ignoring our attempts to reach out to them, we can consider action then... but as of right now, I believe that it's too soon. We've only left them automated warnings and threats, and told them to "stop it, you're new here and you should've been blocked earlier" - none of which are messages that are helpful. Keep an eye on this user, try and help them, and let me know if things escalate from there and another look into the matter is warranted and I'll be happy to do so. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:44, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, could you check if this bot working normally? It seems that it's adding broken image tag to articles that don't need it. Thanks.--SharabSalam (talk) 12:36, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SharabSalam, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns regarding RonBot. I took a look at the bot's block log, and I see that the user was blocked and later unblocked after you created this message. I think that the issue you reported here has since been resolved, but please verify this for me and let me know if I'm incorrect. If you still see issues that were caused by RonBot and occurred after 16:01, 31 March 2019 (UTC) (when bot was unblocked yesterday after issues were reported and fixed), let me know and I'll be happy to look into it further, or file a report at the administrators' noticeboard by starting a new discussion. Thanks again for the message and for your diligence with this matter, and I hope you have a great rest of your day. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:53, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As long as you've added the humor tag at the top of the page, read this page, and followed the guidelines on this page - you should be fine and you created it correctly for April Fools day. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:09, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you followed the directions on this page and made sure that it's not listed in places that it shouldn't be (where only legitimate discussions belong or should be listed), you should be fine. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:32, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Can u check for me? I am trying to study my science. Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 21:33, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think you're supposed to omit tagging the actual page with the deletion notice if you're just doing it for April Fools, but I'm not absolutely certain. I went ahead and removed it from the page just in case. ;-) If I'm incorrect and if it's okay to have the tag and notice present, feel free to revert my edit and restore it. Either way, I think you'll be fine and other editors will know that this was simply a joke nomination - no need to worry. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:45, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Your upage has a deletion tag. Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 21:46, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah... and that's why I said that I might be incorrect regarding the addition of the deletion notice on the actual page. I added a dummy edit to the page with my updated thoughts. Like I said, if you find that I'm incorrect, that having the tag and notice present is fine, and if you want it restored - feel free to revert my removal and restore it back. I was just removing it so that other editors wouldn't confuse it for being a legitimate request for deletion. But since you have the humor template tagged in the discussion, it should be apparent and obvious to others that it's just for April Fools. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:49, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like you're right, Oshwah is never wrong! Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 21:53, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yup, that makes sense. Otherwise, the page gets listed next to legitimate nominations by bots, which makes it very difficult for editors to discern the joke/humor nominations and discussions from the legitimate ones. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:55, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
How can I nominate Jesus or Homer Simpson for adminship as an April Fools? Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 21:57, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Umm... good question. I'm honestly not sure what the process is for an April Fools RFA. Don't get me wrong: Adding discussions, nominations, etc for April Fools humor is good fun... but don't let yourself get too carried away. If you're not sure as to how to add a humor page, discussion, nomination, etc and do so properly so that it's not disruptive or mistaken as vandalism or a legit nomination, don't create it. It's a much safer option to just hang back and watch others be brave and stupid in those regards than to try and "wing it" and do it yourself, make a mistake or go too far, and be the subject of frustration over something you were just doing as a joke and for a few smirks and a couple of laughs. ;-) Things can (and have) gone too far before regarding April Fools on Wikipedia. Last year, it even became the subject of an ArbCom case. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:08, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
