42 (City of Manchester) Signal Squadron

42 (City of Manchester) Signal Squadron was there ever such a unit or is this an imagination of the creators?

BlueD954 (talk) 02:23, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Based on the references I suspect that there was, but I am unfamiliar with it. But the article contains no information on 42 (City of Manchester) Signal Squadron (it only contains material on its predecessor units) so I have changed the article into a redirect. Best wishes. Mark Wilson

Hello Dormskirk - thank you so much for taking a look at Mark Wilson's profile. I've just had a look and he is still listed int he biog bar on the right as CEO of Aviva and on the board of Aviva. Please can you remove those references?

Thanks so much HayleySandford (talk) 09:20, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hayley - I have removed the mention of him being a board member of Aviva. As regards him being CEO it does show underneath his term as being 2013–2018 so I think it is reasonably clear that he is the ex-CEO. I hope this helps. Dormskirk (talk) 09:26, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There are only these two twitter threads that say Admiral Timothy Fraser has assumed the post of VCDS. Should they be used as references and alter the relevant pages accordingly or wait for gov.uk or official announcements?

Thanks

I'm a patient

In June 2019, the hospital was one of the filming locations for the Channel 4 drama, "The Light", starring Sarah Lancashire. The series will air later in the year.

I AM THE SOURCE AS I AM A PATIENT ON GWELFOR WARD AT THE HOSPITAL - AND I CAN SEE THE TRUCKS FROM MY ROOM... I HAVE ASKED THEM MYSELF AND FOR MORE INFO YOU WILL NEED TO CONTACT CHANNEL 4 Cpqueeley89 (talk) 21:47, 12 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Or you can contact the ward directly on 01792 516402 if you live in the UK and they will confirm it for you...

Or 01792 561155.. That's the main switchboard, they will also confirm it. Cpqueeley89 (talk) 21:52, 12 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Or email me on cpqueeley1989@gmail.com and I will happily send photos for confirmation which I took myself Cpqueeley89 (talk) 21:55, 12 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I noticed that you removed my addition of the subject's wife because it was unsourced, which is fair enough. Thanks Δουλοιεσμεν (talk) 23:41, 12 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - A good place to look would be "Who was who". As he was a major-general there is a good chance that he (and details of his immediate family) appeared in that publication. You can then cite it as a source. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 06:26, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations on finding a source for this, but it does not seem to be that which was accessed by the original writer: 1) the spelling of "Jillynhgam" is different from that currently shown in the article; 2) your new source does not include the phrase "– to remaigne there till the yere be further spent...". Hi there. I notice you recently created a load of categories for Hospitals in Northern Ireland by county (Category:Hospitals in County Antrim etc.) I also notice a grave error in each of those categories. The Crichton

Hi, I see you have made lots of much needed changes to The Crichton as it has transitioned from a hospital to a university and business park. I see there are some further revisions needed to the info box and other details. I live near Dumfries so have personal knowledge of the changes and current use, so suggest that I make some further revisions, but wanted to collaborate with you before embarking on that, since you have already done so much. Any thoughts? Thanks. Mark.Mouswald (talk) 19:14, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - The Crichton was a hospital for 175 years and only became a university and business park a few years ago. The infobox is a "hospital infobox" and does include key information from when it was a hospital. This is only logical in that the vast amount of its history relates to its time as a hospital. But please feel free to add additional sourced information if you have it. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 19:19, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Admiral Sir Charles Ogle - portrait bequeathed to him by General Sir Charles Asgill

Hello Dormskirk. For some considerable time I have been trying to locate a portrait, painted in 1822, and bequeathed the following year to Admiral Sir Charles Ogle in perpetuity. I have looked for this in portrait galleries around the world and Yale is currently trying to find it too. I've put ads in papers asking for information and even engaged art detectives to try to find it! On the offchance you might know anything about what happened to this portrait, and more especially its current whereabouts, I would be extremely grateful to you if you could give me some information. It has been suggested to me that it perished in a fire in Hampshire about a hundred years ago, which of course is quite possible. Just knowing what happened would mean I could put this search 'to bed' ! Sorry to trouble you and many thanks. Arbil44 (talk) 18:18, 5 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - This sounds a most interesting story. Sadly I am no expert on lost art but wish you the best of luck with your search. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 18:44, 5 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dormskirk. Thank you for your reply. It was a long shot, I know, but sometimes those who contribute on a subject know more than they are making public! In your studies you just might have come across information about a fire, or disinheritance etc. Thanks and best wishes.Arbil44 (talk) 10:00, 6 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dormskirk. As I understand it, it is possible to be in email contact within the Wikipedia community? There is something I would very much like to pass by you if I may? If you could please email me I will explain! Many thanks. Arbil44 (talk) 14:03, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your reply Dormskirk. Not only did he offer to go to the gallows in Asgill’s stead; lay a detailed plan (with the help of several ladies in Summit, New Jersey and no doubt beyond – I fancy they were going to portray themselves as laundrywomen and bundle Asgill into a basket!) to ‘spirit Asgill away’ to escape execution (which, when it happened, Asgill refused to go along with) but the whole six month affair was the beginning of the end for him and he became increasingly ill during the course of the following year. It had pained him so greatly so see such a popular young man have his life sacrificed. He eventually died of dropsy in October 1783 at the Morris House in Upper Manhattan. The Source for all this information is General Washington’s Dilemma, by Katherine Mayo, published in 1938 and The History of Chatham, New Jersey by Ambrose E. Vanderpoel. Their source was, amongst others, the account of these events given by Samuel Graham, one of the 13 officers who drew their names out of a hat to go to the gallows. These books, each with a bit more than the other, are listed in Further Reading on the Asgill page.

I am unable to create a page for James Gordon, but I very much hope that you might be prepared to do so? It may be too late already since poor Gordon is really the forgotten hero – and has been so for far too long. But would you be prepared to give it a go? I hope you will forgive me for making this request, but I understand you have created pages for military personnel, albeit more senior figures. James Gordon is very special and was loved by all who knew him. Many thanks. Arbil44 (talk) 19:04, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

OK. I will start it off for you and then leave it to you to expand it. As regards use of email, please read WP:BLPPRIVACY: posting of personal information in articles or talk pages is not recommended. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 21:14, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Dormskirk. That was why I wanted to use email, especially since I am in touch with another member that way - who indicated it was a possible, indeed accepted, method. Sorry to have misunderstood. I will delete some of the above message. Arbil44 (talk) 21:44, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. I have created the article (see James Gordon (British Army officer, died 1783)). I hope you like it. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 21:47, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much Dormskirk. I am very happy indeed that you so kindly created this page. I really hope that people will look at it and get to know this Scottish officer who was so deeply loved by comrades and enemy alike. Would it be possible to add the image of the Morris House from their website (I created a link and the image is on page one)? I also have a photograph I took when in the room where he died. If you agree, could you guide me as to how I upload it? Arbil44 (talk) 23:06, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

My thanks for all your efforts, I'm so grateful. With regard to the Further Reading books - the task you have set me is daunting beyond words, since Gordon is mentioned throughout. The picture you have added isn't the best one (that is on the Jumel website), but the top right window is the room where Gordon died, so that is nice.Arbil44 (talk) 23:25, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect that the one on the Jumel website is copyrighted so we cannot use that. If you want to upload an image please it is best to use this link to access the upload wizard and follow the instructions. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 23:30, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That was very scary! I got this message: "Thanks for uploading!" but nothing appears on the James Gordon page, so I hate to think where it has gone instead...Arbil44 (talk) 00:11, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You have successfully uploaded it - well done! I have found it on the wikimedia commons and inserted it in the James Gordon article. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 09:26, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you again for your kind and patient assistance Dormskirk. Now I am having difficulties with regard to uploading Asgill's coat of arms. I have been told to ask here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump/Copyright#Coat_of_Arms_for_General_Sir_Charles_Asgill%2C_2nd_baronet This is all part of why I find Wikipedia so difficult to navigate.Arbil44 (talk) 11:29, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are asking at the right place. These are complicated issues. I am not clear who owns the copyright to Asgill's coat of arms. You may have bought a copy of it but that does not give you copyright. I would wait and see what response you get. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 11:38, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I am nearly finished here Dormskirk, thank goodness! I will ring the Lancaster Herald tomorrow and ask the question. I think, and hope, my final question to you is do you have a copy of the 1782 Army List? I have checked my library, and they don't have it, but I need to check whether Captain The Hon. Fulke Greville's initial was "R" (as Mayo claims) or "C" as he is listed on Wikipedia? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Greville_(1762%E2%80%931832) The Captain Charles The Hon. Fulke Greville's Wikipedia profile fits perfectly with a man who would have been Asgill's friend - at school with him - and drew lots with him. I have checked with the Wiltshire record office, which holds the original letter, and they confirm that it is unsigned, so Mayo was putting two and two together and, in my view, getting it wrong. This is important and I don't know how to do this since there are no Army Lists near to where I live (or even in my county it would seem). I am not trying to try your patience, honestly, and I know I am being a pain in the neck. Thank you. Arbil44 (talk) 14:06, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't have one: that's quite specialist. You will probably need to apply for a reading ticket at the British Library. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 16:08, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Dormskirk. I will email a contact I have there who is exceptionally helpful since going to London is completely out of the question. I am in hospital in a few days time and need answers quickly. Arbil44 (talk) 16:53, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Good luck with the hospital visit. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 17:10, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dormskirk. I am quite literally in tears now and shaking like a leaf. I want to be finished with Wikipedia but there are just two things left for me to do. One of them is playing out like a nightmare here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump/Copyright#Coat_of_Arms_for_General_Sir_Charles_Asgill%2C_2nd_baronet Please could you help me? Thank you Arbil44 (talk) 08:10, 17 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are making inquiries at the right place. Image copyright is a complex area and I do not want to give you inappropriate advice. I suggest you wait until you have had your hospital visit and are not under pressure. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 08:45, 17 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough Dormskirk, but I don't know what more I am supposed to do? I have been told by the College of Arms that I hold the copyright to the coat of arms. What does Wikipedia want - blood? It's an entirely different kettle of fish on the Cornwallis page where there aren't even any references. I certainly feel I am not being treated fairly, having spoken with the Lancaster Herald yesterday. Things are likely to be worse after Friday since I am being investigated for cancer, so I wanted all this over before then and to be free of Wikipedia. Besides which, I am being ignored over there, which doesn't help. Arbil44 (talk) 09:03, 17 September 2019 (UTC) Arbil44 (talk) 09:07, 17 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but I really have tried to help you as best as I can on this. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 09:25, 17 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You certainly have been helpful Dormskirk, thank you again. Finally the coat of arms issues are sorted and I hope it will not be long before it is on the Asgill page. When it is, is it possible that you would please add the English translation of his family motto - which is "Regardless of his own interest"? That was how he lived his life. I have one more paragraph to add to Asgill's page, once I hear back from Edinburgh with a reference. After the December journal is published, with revelatory information, I shall take the opportunity to add more to the James Gordon page, which, sadly, doesn't look as though it will be doing very well. I hope it will not be deleted before I have a chance to add more? Then, once Trinity has erected the marker to him in thier churchyard, after languishing in an unmarked grave for 236 years, I will put up a link to that too. I have had a very difficult and stressful time on Wikipedia, and not enjoyed it one bit. My lack of IT skills are to some extent to blame, but I know, even if others do not, that I make up for these deficiencies in many other ways! I am in hospital tomorrow, so I hope I am done here for the time being. My thanks again. Arbil44 (talk) 12:24, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Good luck with the hospital. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 12:30, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dormskirk. I will have left Wikipedia permanently by tomorrow but there is information I would like to pass to you privately before I do, which not only affects Charles Asgill, but also James Gordon. Members here have emailed me via Wikipedia <wiki@wikimedia.org> (thus not divulging their personal email addresses) To: Arbil44. If you would be prepared to do so too then I could give you information I am not prepared to make public. Thanks and regards. Arbil44 (talk) 10:22, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I am really sorry but as previously indicated, I would prefer not to disclose my email address. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 10:46, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Dormskirk. The internal emailing system doesn't reveal your personal email address to me. Several people have emailed me this way and I have no idea what their email address is. I would have liked to pass some historical information to you privately, that's all. Since I have been called a liar by another member, I shall be leaving Wikipedia tomorrow evening in order to care for my husband, who has cancer surgery on Wednesday. My own surgery was a week ago, so I am sure you will understand that I cannot carry on here under the circumstances. I had hoped to be able to finish off my work first, but I cannot go on talking to myself day after day. I have acomplished all demands required of me. Yet no response continues to be the norm. Thanks and regards. Arbil44 (talk) 15:35, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I totally understand you wanting to leave wikipedia and I hope all goes well with your husband and yourself. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 16:58, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Arbil44, the system you're referring to is OTRS. Not all editors can be contacted this way; only a very small set of editors who have volunteered to answer questions sent to a general Wikipedia e-mail address have access to it. If there is information that you would like to share with me, please send it in reply to one of my e-mails sent through that system. Cordless Larry (talk) 18:32, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please allow me to apologize first for your previous experiences using Wikipedia. It is hoped that everyone's experiences in Wikipedia be pleasant ones, and I personally hope that the time spent editing here for you contains more meaningful interactions with editors who will appreciate your contributions to the project, rather than the negative interactions that you've unfortunately experienced. Please give us more time to meet these expectations — I know that better experiences exist and they can be very rewarding. Regards, Spintendo 12:13, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

The above post made me cry since it was the only nice post I’ve received since 2007. Nothing improved though. Far from it, it got worse. It wasn’t long before I was being threatened with permanent - instant – without warning - banning – because I am an old woman of 75 with very inadequate IT skills. So - banning on ageist grounds. I was also snapped at and given orders – all of which I obeyed to the letter. The worst cruelty of all though was being ghosted – day after day after day. Since August’s cull I’ve had no choice but to be here day after day, desperately trying to rebuild my Asgill page against all the odds. This vile, vindictive and bullying environment has brought me to my knees and I am now a gibbering nervous wreck (definition: speaking rapidly and unintelligibly, typically through fear or shock), feeling ill and unable to sleep. I have also now been inexcusably insulted by being called a liar, since I was forced to go over to Wikipedia Media. Dormskirk and Cordless Larry have both tried to alleviate my stress, and for this I am grateful. I would now plead with both of them to get my three edits done today. I leave tonight and would have greater peace of mind when I have gone if my work was finished. I shall be posting a fuller account on my talk page, as I have been ordered to do, which hardly seems appropriate since all the edits are on the Asgill talk page. Thanks for your efforts. Arbil44 (talk) 06:19, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have added the agreed text. I hope it is OK. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 07:43, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I am extremely grateful Dormskirk. One down, two to go! Perhaps Cordless Larry might be prepared to upload Lady Asgill's portrait since I have done as requested and all the relevant information is on the Wiki Media page. He has the image. I appreciate your kind assistance. Arbil44 (talk) 08:31, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 09:15, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Arbil44's COI Complaint

I am posting this on Dormskirk’s talk page because this member has shown kindness, compassion and help towards me (another member) who has now had a nervous breakdown. They may not be able to help me themselves, but I do believe, once this has been read, that they may know what to do. This is a serious complaint against Wikipedia as whole – as an institution – as a place which engages in cyber bullying. My name is Anne Ammundsen and my username is Arbil44. I am an old woman of 75 years of age and my IT skills are very poor indeed. Everything Wikipedia requires of contributors is either Double Dutch to me, or, many times, beyond my abilities to cope with. Others can delete great swathes my work, with great glee, without even informing me until after the event, but when help is needed to rectify my mistakes, it is sparse, slow and hard to find. Here, though, I would like to highly praise both Dormskirk and Cordless Larry, both of whom have devoted much of their time to trying their best to help me. I wouldn’t say that their help has not been enough, but rather my distress goes well beyond anything they would have been able to rectify.

I had to leave Wikipedia on 1st October – for two reasons. Firstly because my health has suffered so badly from my experiences with Wikipedia since later in August 2019, that I suffered a full blown nervous breakdown. The second reason was that on 2nd October my husband was having surgery to remove a cancerous tumour and I knew that I had to give my full attention to caring for him, as best I could in light of my own state of health (permanently shaking, constantly bursting into tears and having lost the ability to sleep more than two or three hours a night, and depression which I have never experienced the like of before in my life). Not to mention that I too had surgery for cervical cancer investigations on 20th September – slap bang in the middle of my Wikipedia crisis. Initially I thought that my departure from Wikipedia would restore my health, but at the eleventh hour I was plunged back into total depression once more. Spintendo had apologised, initially, for my terrible experience with Wikipedia and expressed a wish that it would be a much more worthwhile experience for me. I have no idea whether this was a generic response, or whether they had, indeed, studied the situation and knew what had caused me to express my view that Wikipedia was a vile, vindictive and totally unforgiving environment which had destroyed not only 18 years of my work (at a cost to me of £20,000), but had destroyed my health too. At the time that is what I thought they were apologising for, but as time passed it became clear that it was only during the latter stages of my time on Wikipedia that they seemed to become aware that I had been branded with the COI label and I had been banned from my 18 years of work. This rendered their sweet apology of little value. Indeed, I can only say that my experience, post their apology, became worse and worse. Insult was added to injury when, having given notice of leaving, they appeared online again at quite literally the eleventh hour (having ignored me and left me talking to myself for three days) and instead of apologising once more, sent me a message – but there were no words in that message. The link to their message led me to a blank page – or rather – no message whatsoever. After spending an hour searching for what message they had left me I eventually deduced that they had “notified me” that they had removed my Edit Requests, which at that moment in time, contained three final edit requests to be “approved” prior to my stated departure on health grounds. This seemed like adding insult to injury. I had just spent six weeks of my life obeying every single order which had been demanded of me. I worked tirelessly to obey all the rules, but failed at times on account of my IT ineptitude. So far as providing references is concerned – I provided them all in abundance – several for each item on occasion. Many of these demands had caused me to be up until the small hours of the morning trying to find the demanded references – I didn’t let Wikipedia down on any of them in the end. A deficiency in references being the reason given for culling 6 A4 pages of my work from my Charles Asgill 2nd Baronet page – (just like that – no warning – no apology) - first submitted by me in 2007.

The other reason for the culling was that I am related to Charles Asgill, who is my g-g-g-grandfather. As I say, I have been slapped with the COI branding. I maintain that this fact is the very reason why I have become the only serious authority on the man. Not necessarily the only serious authority on “The Asgill Affair”, by any means, but the only serious authority on the man himself. I was also informed that Asgill was a “minor noble” and therefore didn’t deserve to have such a comprehensive page. This is the most extraordinary statement I have ever heard. Asgill was a cause celebre for his whole life, 5 French Plays were written about his experiences at the hands of George Washington, and throughout his life, and since his death, he has been written about continuously. “The Asgill Affair” was America’s first serious international diplomatic crisis. How then can he be no more than a “minor noble”?

The other reason I left Wikipedia was because, in my view, I was called a liar because I stated that I had found the original portrait, painted by John Hoppner, which depicts Asgill’s wife, Lady Sophia Asgill. This portrait is now owned by a Saudi prince and, in 2011, I had managed to worm my way into the palace to photograph the original portrait – with permission obviously. My photograph is, therefore, of a far better quality than the image of the Hoppner portrait which is shown on Wikipedia’s page concerning Frederica, Duchess of York, to whom Lady Asgill was Lady of the Bedchamber. I may be wrong, but I don’t think it is my own image which Dormskirk kindly uploaded. When I explained my “find” of the original portrait on the Wiki Media page (which Spintendo insisted I post on) the response was “Hm, Where would that be?” Anybody who doesn’t know the meaning of “Hm” in this context, really doesn’t deserve a place as an editor on Wikipedia. My fuller response to that poster is, I presume, still there where I give a blow by blow account of how I came to be standing in a Saudi prince’s palace photographing Hopper’s work. I requested an apology from the poster in question, but none was forthcoming, and I had no support in this request from Spintendo (who appears to be the nominated authority in charge of my COI case).

I would like to say a little about who I am now, and leave you to judge for yourself the likelihood that I am an unreliable and biased contributor who should be banned from her own page. I am the daughter of the late Colonel Philip Newton MBE, FMA, FRSA whose retirement years, after leaving the regular British Army, were spent devoting his life to Army Museums. His passion was military history. His passion is part of my DNA. More about him can be found here. https://www.unithistories.com/officers/Army_officers_N01.html#Newton_PS This will also give a link to my mother’s wartime service as a WRNS officer. I am also the wife of a retired New Zealand Ambassador (sixteen years of being alongside him during his time as Head of Mission, including being in Tehran during the American Hostage Crisis - see the film “Argo” for more details), and just one proof of this can be found on Wikipedia here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ambassadors_of_New_Zealand_to_Saudi_Arabia In my working life I served Britain in both the Foreign Office and also the WRNS where high standards of conduct and accountability were, naturally, expected of me. My Membership number of the Association of Royal Naval Officers is 019242. Check it out if you are doubtful.

What has been the absolute final straw for me, and has brought me to my knees emotionally, physically and psychologically is that, since May 2019 (when I visited the USA to conduct my final research) - this should have been the happiest time of my life. I am on the brink of actually changing history. How many people can claim that? The only way of doing so is to produce new, unpublished, information which nobody else has found or made public. Indeed, the information about to be revealed has been deliberately hidden for 233 years. A publication is in the process of being prepared in America for a December 2019 Journal. This amazing publication is about to completely change “The Asgill Affair”. As will be clear to anyone reading it, this has only come about because of me. Instead of the joy I should be feeling, Wikipedia has turned me into a complete gibbering wreck. I broke down yesterday with a counsellor at my local GP’s surgery. Should it be required, I am perfectly sure they would give written evidence of this. They were astonished at the treatment I have received.

Does the Wikipedia community still judge that I am worthy of being banned from my own Wikipedia page? I hope this post will not be deleted and that, in time, I will be sent a private message to the effect that the status quo has been restored. I cannot engage in further explanations or interaction – I have said it all here – and my own health, and that of my husband, demands that I do what I said I would do, and take a break from Wikipedia. Arbil44 (talk) 10:41, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I feel privileged that you have chosen to single me out for the help I have given you. I am delighted to have done this and have enjoyed working on the Charles Asgill article. Alas, I am just another member of the wikipedia community and I am not sure that there is anything I can do that will improve the culture of wikipedia but will continue to try and support other contributors. I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery. Very best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 10:52, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I recognise when people are being kind Dormskirk - and that has been the case with Cordless Larry too. Are you able to re-post this somewhere more appropriate? Or, does Cordless Larry know of somewhere more appropriate? I think Spintendo needs to be aware of my post, which I have kept entirely factual. I have no idea how to go about making my feelings known publicly and have had to make my identity known in order to claim I am who I am. I just hope that your comment isn't the end of the matter. This neeeds to go up the food chain for attention! Surely it is not OK for this to be the "culture of wikipedia"? Will nobody but you and me see this? Was the image of Sophia you uploaded my copy of the original portrait? It looks a murky image! Many thanks as always.Arbil44 (talk) 11:10, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Pinging Spintendo, though I confess that I don't understand what they're supposed to have done wrong. Cordless Larry (talk) 13:40, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You have misunderstood the situation I'm afraid, Cordless Larry, and I hope our emailed correspondence has cleared it up? Arbil44 (talk) 14:47, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not really, no. You write of Spintendo: "it became clear that it was only during the latter stages of my time on Wikipedia that they seemed to become aware that I had been branded with the COI label and I had been banned from my 18 years of work". Spintendo got involved because you made a COI request, so he was aware of your COI from the start of his involvement. Moreover, you are not banned and as far as I can see, he has never told you you are. Cordless Larry (talk) 15:12, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

So far as my own image of Lady Asgill is concerned, which as you rightly say, Cordless Larry, I sent to the photo permissions address in desperation - they are not responding. Which seems par for the course. I was requested by Spintendo to go to Wiki Media page to get permission. This I did. The permission is the same as the image kindly uploaded by Dormskirk. The original image is out of copyright. As I have said a million times, I do not have the IT skills to upload this much better image (photograph of Hoppnr portrait taken by me) myself. Is it Wikipedia's policy to ban uploads, donated by old women who lack IT skills? There are so many people here who could do it in a trice. Arbil44 (talk) 15:21, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We are all volunteers here, Arbil44, and many of us have full-time day jobs. We can't always respond or help immediately. The same goes for the people who respond to e-mails sent to the permissions queue. Cordless Larry (talk) 15:36, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I know this will be painful for Dormskirk, in whose harbour I am sheltering, but, Cordless Larry, Spintendo specifically told me that I am banned from editing the Charles Asgill page myself, on my own, without first passing it by several other editors and even then I cannot actually do the edit myself. Spintendo did not tell me that I am banned from Wikipedia. But since Charles Asgill is my main interest, its the same difference really. Arbil44 (talk) 15:29, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Arbil44, Spintendo wrote at User talk:Arbil44#Incorrect page given 28-SEP-2019: "Also, because you are a distant relative to the subject, it would be best if you let others make changes to the article. That's simply because your role as a Wikipedia editor may come into conflict with your role as the distant relative to the subject of the article. That doesnt mean that you are banned from making edits — it only means that you're strongly advised to let others make the edits for you. That final decision of whether to edit the page or not is up to you". Cordless Larry (talk) 16:51, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

And, finally, Dormskirk - dare I ask you to change the portait of Lady Asgill? The permission to use my own image of the original Hoppner portrait can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Media_copyright_questions#Lady_Asgill_portrait_to_be_uploaded_to_the_Sir_Charles_Asgill%2C_2nd_Baronet_pag It is out of copyright so it makes no difference, now, copyright-wise, whether your cropped version is used, or my own cropped image. So far as my own image is concerned, I emailed it to Photo Submissions <photosubmission@wikimedia.org> on 30 September - Subject Re: [Ticket#2019093010002603] Photograph of Lady Sophia Asgill, so they should be able to find it quickly enough. I am so sorry to trouble you once more (I've troubled everyone endlessly I know) but I never chose to be put into this invideous positiom. My image is identical to the one you kindly uploaded, but it is much clearer and fresher looking! Thank you so much for allowing me to use your talk page as a port in a storm. I'm so grateful. Thank you. Arbil44 (talk) 22:05, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, as explained by Cordless Larry above, the system you are referring to is OTRS. Only a very small set of editors have access to the system and I therefore cannot access the image you have emailed to Photo Submissions. That's why I uploaded a cropped image myself. I thought it would help. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 22:20, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Spintendo. If I email you my version of the image, will you somehow get it to the Asgill page as a replacement? I'm afraid I cannot go back to my own talk page. It would be just too too stressful for me to do so. I therefore ask permission, here, for the following outstnding edit to be made please:

This is still outstanding and is the text to go with the image, and this is bristling with references too. ” Lady Asgill was Lady of the Bedchamber to HRH Frederica, Duchess of York. [1] The Hoppner portrait of the Duchess http://www.wikigallery.org/wiki/painting_199276/John-Hoppner/Portrait-of-HRH-Frederica-Charlotte-Ulrica-Princess-Royal-of-Prussia-and-Duchess-of-York shows Lady Asgill sitting at her feet. A cropped section of that image is shown here: (** insert image) Lady Asgill was godmother to Hoppner’s granddaughter, Helen Clarence, who was born on May, 1791”. [2] Arbil44 (talk) 22:26, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

For further clarity the notes [1] and [2] are covered as notes [28] and [29] on the Charles Asgill talk page. These are the references I have given. And, Dormskirk, naturally I appreciate what you have done in uploading an alternative version. I hope you understand I just would like a better image for a woman who saved a man's life. Thanks to everyone for dealing with my requests. I dearly wish it wasn't necessary to keep asking for help. Once these two things have, hopefully, been done, then it is all over. Arbil44 (talk) 22:37, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dormskirk, I'm shaking like a leaf, but I think I just might have uploaded my version of the Lady Asgill image. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard If I have, would you be kind enough to exchange it for the one currently on the Asgill page? Many thanks. Arbil44 (talk) 08:47, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It says "thanks for uploading" here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard, so maybe I've done it? Arbil44 (talk) 08:49, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you did successfully upload it and I have now inserted it. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 09:54, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm so very grateful to you Dormskirk. You have done it really beautifully, and the bonus for me is that you have done the outstanding text edit too. It's perfect now and I'm thrilled to pieces that you have done this. I cannot thank you enough. By the way, I hope you too see that the image itself is an improvement! Best wishes Arbil44 (talk) 10:35, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. And I agree that it is a major improvement (and larger!) Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 10:36, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Could you guide me through how to add to your Tireless Contributor Star system? I'd like to add one under the Asgill basnner, but have no idea how to do this. Arbil44 (talk) 10:38, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - That's very thoughtful. You simply go to Wikipedia:Barnstars and copy the template you want to use (the bit shown as {{ }}) and paste it into the recipient's talk page. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 10:45, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Are you able to give yourself a Barnstar from me to you? As a Tireless Contributor on the Charles Asgill page? I ask, because I am feeling totally lost on the page you directed me to. Otherwise, I send you now a Virtual Barnstar in recognition of all the efforts you have gone to on my behalf. At the very least, I hope you know I am grateful? You also know my IT limitations don't you. Best wishes Arbil44 (talk) 11:01, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - Don't worry. I take your message as a Virtual Barnstar and am very pleased to have helped resolve this. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 11:05, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Just found a message from Spintendo in which I am directed to Vanilla ice cream, so don't know what this will look like once published, but if it is a way of public thanks, then that will fit the bill! Arbil44 (talk) 11:09, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Great. Many thanks for the ice cream! Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 11:13, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thomas Cook Retail

I’d like to know why TUI UK hasn’t been merged into TUI AG, these nonsense edits are destroying necessary Thomas Cook pages. (Airline7375 (talk) 23:14, 21 September 2019 (UTC))[reply]

Good point. I have adjusted the TUI UK article so it becomes an article on "Thomson Travel" (pre-acquisition) as that was largely what the article was about. The general point is that we should not have a proliferation of articles on subsidiaries: the key points should be in the main article on the group. The second greatest man in Egypt

Hi, not sure if you've seen my posts at Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Miscellaneous#"Second greatest man in Egypt" but I've tracked down the original, it was in an after-dinner speech celebrating 50 years of Thomas Cook's excursions, and John M. Cook was in the chair, so perhaps not the most unbiased of claims! I've not been able to find anything (other than material rather obviously lifted from Wikipedia) to suggest the epithet had any broader currency. DuncanHill (talk) 11:17, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I had not seen that - interesting - Thanks! Dormskirk (talk) 11:19, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dormskirk! Thank you for improvements you made to this article, much appreciated. As you've probably guessed, I started a new article by not realising this existed, then patched the two together, and all references were thanks to Trove, the Australian National Library's facility for searching Australian newspapers to 1955. This brings me to the deletion which you suspect of being commentary, which I dispute. Responses to a search any of the various ways his name was used (including likely errors in the OCR process) abruptly ceased in July 1947. I have not guessed at a reason, only stated a fact which is not amenable to referencing, but indisputable. He was a noted airman, commandant and administrator, a member of an important family in this country, he had a critical job in Germany, then nothing more is heard. Sometimes silence is louder than words, but how can it be better conveyed? Doug butler (talk) 08:00, 28 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your view. I have re-inserted the text but as a note and slightly tweaked the wording from "hero" to "former airman". Do you think that covers it? Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 08:22, 28 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Fine by me. Thanks. Doug butler (talk) 08:47, 28 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Could you help?

Hi mr dormskirk, I'm new to Wikipedia but not to wiki style editing, I've had a private server on which I've practiced. I was wondering if you would mind checking out my Sandbox before I publish. I want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong or missing something. Cheers! MHist01 (talk) 19:53, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - Your article looks pretty good to me. My observations would be (i) you don't need the word "Notes" in every citation (ii) you should use the citation template so that you do not have bare urls showing (see WP:BAREURL) and (iii) you should not have any redlinks in the article unless you have an immediate intention of creating those articles (see WP:REDLINK). Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 20:28, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
So about the redlinks, I shouldn't have them unless I plan to create that page in the near future? Besides that I understand what you mean with the links. Also, what do you mean by "you don't need the word "Notes""? MHist01 (talk) 20:52, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - Yes, that's right about the redlinks. You need to demonstrate notability and the best way to do that is to create the article (if it is notable). My apologies about "Notes": what you have done is completely correct. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 21:01, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Yeomanry deployment on Op HERRICK 18

Hi. Many thanks for your help with my recent improvements of the Royal Yeomanry page.

Can you advise me on how to provide published sources for information which, by its nature, is not published?

Specifically, the figure of 25 personnel deployed by the Royal Yeomanry on Op HERRICK 18. I know that figure to be correct because at the time (2012) I commanded A (Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry) Squadron, which provided 10 of the 25. I went on to be commanding officer of the regiment (February 2017 to July 2019) and so believe I am a reliable source.

Hi - Many thanks for this. Unfortunately, although you are clearly more knowlegable on this than anyone else, you still need to comply with the requirements of WP:CITE and WP:RS. Surely there must be something published that you can use? Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 20:18, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

OK - thanks. The trouble is that the MOD do not provide published numbers for deployments. The best I can offer is this:

1. The MOD list of the units involved in HERRICK 18. The Royal Yeomanry contribution is significant enough to warrant a mention. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/units-to-deploy-as-part-of-herrick-18-announced

2. A mention in the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry Association newsletter (March 2012) of the fact that the RY were the lead Yeomanry regiment on that roulement (see page 17). file:///Users/connmacevilly/Downloads/Annual%20Circular%202012%20web.pdf

3. Pages 22-23 of the Autumn 2011 Merchant Taylors' Company Magazine, which describe the Regiment's activities in that year and the next. In fact, there is a lot in there that I will try to incorporate. It says "we are already preparing to send up to another 50 members of the regiment on Op HERRICK 18 in early 2013". The eventual number was 25 but I guess I could claim it was 50! http://www.merchant-taylors.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/mt1102_mt_autumn_issue_10-11.pdf

Royal Yeomanry battle honours

Hi,

Many thanks for your most recent edits.

There are 40 battle honours in the list in the article: it is safe to specify that number?

As regards a citation for the 123 battle honours earned by the antecedent regiments, is this Dropbox link acceptable? https://www.dropbox.com/s/rvnqumeusfuhq2l/20080523%20Request%20for%20RY%20Guidon.doc?dl=0

You're making me think that the best way round the citations issue would be to write a book and then cite it liberally!

Conn

Mr Benn (talk) 19:37, 13 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - The 40 battle honours in the list in the article are not currently properly sourced so I don't think you can specify that number based solely on the list. While a drop box would not normally be acceptable, I think the letter contained in it looks sufficiently official that you could use it (to support both the 40 selected honours and the full 123 honours). I look forward to buying your book! Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 19:42, 13 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Yeomanry lineage

Hi,

I'm wondering if you can help with this slightly technical query.

The Lineage table is missing one set of regimental antecedents, those whose title B Squadron bears. They should go into the line below the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry. The immediate antecedents were the Staffordshire Yeomanry and the Queen's Own Warwickshire and Worcestershire Yeomanry. The QOWWY in turn was the progeny of the Warwickshire Yeomanry and the Queen's Own Worcestershire Yeomanry.

Also, the line for the Westminster Dragoons is incorrect. It should only show the Berkshire Yeomanry and 2nd County of London Yeomanry (Westminster Dragoons) as antecedents. The later stuff to the left of those two is just post-1967 renaming of the squadron.

Is there any guidance or method on how to fix these?

Many thanks,

Conn

Mr Benn (talk) 12:40, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I will take a look over the next few days and see if I can fix this. It is usually a process of trial and error! Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 13:38, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Very much obliged! Mr Benn (talk) 15:16, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

ORBAT of 1st (UK) Division

Hi again,

I noticed that the wire diagram showing the ORBAT of 1(UK)Div on the page List of units and formations of the British Army 2019 is incorrect.

Structure of 1st (UK) Division under Army 2020 Refine (click image to enlarge)

There has been some re-jigging of units since the diagram was produced. 1R IRISH and 3PWRR have left 7th Inf Bde and 1 RIFLES and 6 RIFLES have joined it; this is correctly shown in the text on that page.

I don't know the position so far as the other brigades in the Div are concerned. The Div has also been augmented with several CS and CSS brigades in order to make it self-sustaining and deployable as a division. Again, these are listed in the text but the image does not show the changes.

Is it possible to notify whoever produced the diagram and ask them to amend it?

Hi - It was User:Noclador. I will copy to his talk page. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 16:17, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, I uploaded the new graphic already on 10 August 2019 and added it to the article: 1st (United Kingdom) Division#Current formation. I did not add the graphic to the article List of units and formations of the British Army 2019, because I saw there were still some uncertainties about units and formations under 1st UK Division and I did not feel that at this stage the graphic was correct enough to add to that detailed article. I also created graphics for 3rd and 6th division on 10 August. Feel free to add them and if there are changes that need to be made: please let me know on my talkpage. noclador (talk) 16:38, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks. Dormskirk (talk) 16:40, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks User:Noclador for your rapid response and for your hard work. The 1st (United Kingdom) Division#Current formation graphic is already out of date so far as 7X is concerned - 3 PWRR has now left the brigade. Otherwise it is correct for that Bde. I’m not brave enough to risk making my own changes to your graphic!
