Dracula is a television adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula produced by Granada Television and WGBH Boston for BBC Wales in 2006. It was written by Stewart Harcourt and directed by Bill Eagles.
This adaptation explores the ideas of corruption, lies and sexuality in repressed Victorian England. It aired on December 28, 2006 in the United Kingdom, and will be shown on WGBH's Masterpiece Theatre in February 2007.
Cast
- Marc Warren as Count Dracula
- David Suchet as Abraham Van Helsing
- Sophia Myles as Lady Holmwood/Lucy Westenra
- Stephanie Leonidas as Mina Murray
- Dan Stevens as Lord Holmwood
- Rafe Spall as Jonathan Harker
- Tom Burke as Dr. John Seward
Trivia
- Sophia Myles previously played a vampire in the motion picture Underworld.
- A major plot point seems to be derived from the (probably mistaken) belief that Bram Stoker suffered from syphilis.
- In keeping with the book, but against many previous adaptations, in this version Count Dracula can walk about in sunlight.
- The BBC had produced a previous version of this story with Louis Jourdan in the title role.
- There was also a British television version for Mystery and Imagination, starring Denholm Elliott.
