Masked Singer franchise

The Masked Singer Australia is a reality television singing competition show hosted by Osher Günsberg[1] and based on the international music game show franchise Masked Singer which originated from the South Korean television program King of Mask Singer. The show is filmed at Fox Studios Australia.

The first season premiered on Monday, 23 September 2019 on Network 10.[2]

Production

In March 2019 TV Blackbox shared leaked news that Network Ten would be producing a local series of the franchise.[3] The news was officially announced in May 2019 at the network's upfronts.[4] In June 2019 it was also revealed that Osher Gunsberg would be the host of the series.[1] On July 15, 2019, it was revealed that American actress Lindsay Lohan will join the show as a judge. Australian singer Dannii Minogue, comedian Dave Hughes and radio presenter Jackie O were also announced alongside Lohan.[5][6]

The show has an 'extreme security protocol' in effect during and after filming to protect celebrity's identities from leaking, with host Günsberg stating it "was beyond any kind of security I've been exposed to."[7]

The costumes were designed and created by Australian Academy Award and BAFTA Award-Winning costume designer Tim Chappel, who is best known for his work on The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert with Lizzy Gardiner.[8]

Cast

Panelists and host

Following the announcement of the series, it was confirmed by Network Ten that the judging panel would consist of radio personality Jackie O, singer-songwriter Dannii Minogue, international actress and singer-songwriter Lindsay Lohan and comedian & radio personality Dave Hughes.[6] It was also confirmed that Osher Günsberg would host the show.[9]

Throughout the season, various guest panelists appeared as a fifth judge on the judging panel. The guest panelists included comedians Nazeem Hussain (in episode 4)[10] and Luke McGregor (in episode 5).[11][12]

Contestants

Season 1 participants

In 2019, 12 contestants will compete in the competition. In August 2019, Network 10 revealed that there are ARIA Music Awards winners, an MTV Award winner, Logie Awards winner, 'Hall of Famers', an Order of Australia recipient and a World Cup winner among the competitors.[13][14][15][16]
