The blue area is New York State; the red area is area code 315

Area codes 315 and 680 are telephone area codes serving the same area of north-central New York. The territory stretches from the western side of Wayne County to Little Falls, north to the Canada–United States border, east to Massena and south to near Cortland. Most of the area's population lives in Syracuse and its suburbs. Other major population centers include Utica and Watertown.

The main area code, 315, was one of the original area codes created in 1947. It originally stretched through the Binghamton area, all the way to the Pennsylvania border. In 1954, its southern portion, including Binghamton, was combined with the eastern portion of area code 716 to form area code 607.

New York State regulators announced that 315 had been projected to become "exhausted" in the third quarter of 2010. The New York State Public Service Commission at the time weighed two options: an overlay area code, or a split into two codes. A split would have included a north-south arrangement, splitting Oswego County and the north from 315, or an east-west split, with Oswego and Onondaga forming the boundary. Regulators met to discuss a second code in the 315 region; because of economic conditions, assignable numbers did not run out in the third quarter of 2010 as predicted. The revised projected exhaustion date was March 11, 2017, at which point the 680 area code was introduced, creating the first overlay in the upstate region.[1][2]

Since 2017, callers must dial 10 digits for local calls; attempts to make a seven-digit call will trigger a recorded message reminding them of the new rule.
