Purnia Junction, station code PRNA, is the railway station serving the city of Purnia in the Purnia district in the Indian state of Bihar. The Purnia Junction railway station is connected to most of the major cities in India by the railway network. It is a A category railway station of Katihar railway division in Northeast Frontier Railway. [1]

History

Purnia Junction was opened on 1887 and the previous name of this station was Purnea City. This is situated on Katihar-Jogbani line of North East Frontier Railway (NFR). This railway line earlier was metre gauge. Another standard gauge line of East Central Railway (ECR) connects Purnia with Saharsa Junction via Banmankhi. Conversion of the 36 km long Purnia-Banmankhi stretch in Purnia-Saharsa section to broad gauge project is completed in 2016.[2] There are daily and weekly trains to Sealdah, Malda Town, Delhi, Patna Junction, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur Junction, Gorakhpur, Lucknow Charbagh and other neighboring cities. There are many passenger trains available to Katihar, Saharsa Junction and Jogbani.

Facilities

Purnia lies in between Katihar-Jogbani section. Purnia has trains running frequently to Delhi and Kolkata. Purnia is well connected with Katihar, Jogbani and Saharsa through daily passenger and express train services. Currently, the Indian Railways has floated tenders to modernize Purnia Junction.

The major facilities available are Waiting rooms, retiring room, computerised reservation facility, Reservation Counter, Vehicle parking etc. The vehicles are allowed to enter the station premises. There are refreshment rooms vegetarian and non-vegetarian, tea stall, book stall, post and telegraphic office and Government Railway police (G.R.P) office.

To modernise the train inquiry system a call centre has been opened at Patna in 2005.[3] People from Bihar can inquiry about arrival and departure of trains, reservation status, fare, concessions, etc., by dialling a universal telephone number 139 at local call rates. 200 to 500 lines are used in a call centre to ensure that the phone lines do not remain busy and a large number of people can access the facility of enquiry simultaneously. This facility was extended throughout the India by the end of 2005–06 to get the desired train related information by dialling a universal number 139 at local call charges.[3] There are 3 platforms in Purnia junction. The platforms are interconnected with only one foot over bridge (FOB). On 10 April 2018 free Wi-fi facility was started.
