In 2009, the Ukraine national football team played in UEFA Group 6 of the qualifying competition for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Ukraine were placed second in the group and entered the UEFA playoff stage, where they were knocked out by Greece. The team also played friendly matches against Serbia, Slovakia and Turkey. Serhiy Nazarenko and Andriy Shevchenko each scored 4 goals in international matches.
