CryptoNote is an application layer protocol that aims to solve specific problems identified in Bitcoin.[1] Namely:

  • Traceability of transactions
  • The proof-of-work function
  • Irregular emission
  • Hardcoded constants
  • Bulky scripts

The protocol powers several decentralized privacy-oriented cryptocurrencies.[2]

Nothing is known about the original author of CryptoNote, "Nicolas van Saberhagen."[3]
