The Central Bus Terminus, is the main bus station complex in the City of Erode, Tamil Nadu, India. It is located near the Swastik Circle at the junction of NH-544H, NH-381A and State Highway 15 about 3 km north of Erode Junction. It is the third largest bus terminus in Tamil Nadu followed by CMBT and Madurai Mattuthavani bus stand.

History

The Central Bus Terminus was opened to public in 1973 and christened Independence day Silver Jubilee Memorial Bus Terminus to commemorate the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Indian Independence. It is located at the heart of the City, with two Entry and two Exit Gates. It was constructed and being maintained by Erode Municipal Corporation. The available space in the terminal was spread over an area of 12 acres (49,000 m2) and had parking bays to accommodate more than 200 buses simultaneously.

Operations and Traffic

The terminal caters to both intra-city and intercity services with 13 platforms and 120 bus bays.[3] The terminal has 75 bus bays for Mofussil buses (5 platforms each having 15 bays) and 35 bus bays in 7 platforms for city bus and mini bus services.[4] Buses ply from here to all major towns in Tamil Nadu and other important places in Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. The terminus operates with three stations namely, Mofussil Bus Station, Town Bus Station and Minibus Station.

Around 1,10,000 passengers were catered by this terminal everyday.[5] As on 2014, this terminal handles around 4200 bus services with a share of 2530 Mofussil bus services and 1640 city bus services; apart from the mini-bus services.[6] Owing to the congestion and narrow access roads in the core area of the town, Erode Municipal Corporation has decided to construct two satellite bus terminals for handling of intercity bus services as a measure to reduce the traffic flow in core city. .[7] One at Solar along Karur Highway with a capacity to handle 1200 mofussil services bound for South TN and Central TN districts; whereas another one will be established at Chithode along Sathyamangalam Highway (off NH 544 with a capacity to handle 900 mofussil services bound for Western TN districts.[8]
