David Julian Dobrik (/doʊbrɪk/; born July 23, 1996) is a Slovakian-born YouTube personality known for being the de facto leader of the popular YouTube ensemble The Vlog Squad. He started his career on Vine before creating his own YouTube channel towards the end of 2014.[1] His vlog-type videos often feature his friends and fellow Viners such as Liza Koshy, Alex Ernst, Gabbie Hanna, and Jason Nash. His main channel has since reached over 12 million subscribers.
Early life
Dobrik was born on July 23, 1996, in Košice, Slovakia. His family moved to Vernon Hills, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, while Dobrik was six years old.[2] Dobrik is protected under DACA.[3] During his college years, he moved to Los Angeles to boost his Vine career. Dobrik has three siblings named Ester, Sara and Toby.[4]
Career
2013–2016: Vine & YouTube beginnings
In 2013, Dobrik uploaded his first vine. He collaborated on vines with other popular viners such as Liza Koshy, The Gabbie Show, Jason Nash, and Zane & Heath. Before starting his own YouTube channel, Dobrik was part of the YouTube group, Second Class. By the end of that channel in 2015, Dobrik and company had gained over 18,000 subscribers.[5] The end of Second Class came not long after Dobrik set up his personal YouTube channel, David Dobrik.[6] Since its inception, videos on this channel have been comedy vlogs based on real-life situations and semi-scripted bits, featuring many of his former vine collaborators. In August 2016, Dobrik created his second channel, David Dobrik Too, where he posts blooper reels and challenge videos.[7]
2017–present: YouTube and "The Vlog Squad"
Dobrik gained fans in recent years due to his high energy videos that he posted three days a week (now two days a week).[8] In 2017, Dobrik won Vlogger of the Year at the Ninth Annual Shorty Awards.[9] In 2018, Dobrik won First Person at the 2018 Streamy Awards while The Vlog Squad won Best Ensemble Cast under the name "David's Vlog".[10] Dobrik was named one of the "10 Social Media Personalities Making the Most Noise" for 2018 by PAPER Magazine alongside Bretman Rock, Trisha Paytas and Jaboukie Young-White among others.[11] He has a podcast titled 'VIEWS' with fellow YouTuber Jason Nash with occasional features from Joe Vulpis and Natalie Mariduena.[12] In September 2018, Dobrik created his third channel, Views Podcast, where he posts the video podcast of Views.[13]
The Vlog Squad
The term "The Vlog Squad" refers to the friend group that appears in Dobrik's vlogs. Several friends have come and gone, but many sources give a list of the biggest names and most constant appearances as the recurring members.[14] Dobrik acts as the center and de facto leader of the group, seeing that the group is often mainly driven and brought together by him.[15] Those who make regular appearances in his videos and are considered to be a part of the "Vlog Squad" by fans are, among others, Liza Koshy, Josh Peck, Jason Nash, Scotty Sire, Kristen McAtee, Zane Hijazi, Heath Hussar, Matt King, Dom Zeglaitis, Alex Ernst, Toddy Smith, Corinna Kopf, Jeff Wittek, Carly Incontro, Erin Gilfoy and formerly Gabbie Hanna, BigNik, Elton Castee and Trisha Paytas.[15]
Many other YouTuber and internet personalities have made guest appearances including Trisha Paytas,[16] Jeffree Star,[17][18] Tana Mongeau,[19] and The Dolan Twins[20]. Many celebrities have also been featured in Dobrik’s vlogs, such as Drake Bell,[21] John Stamos,[22] Paris Hilton,[23] Kylie Jenner,[24] Kendall Jenner,[25] Kaia Gerber,[26] Lil Pump, [27] Rob Riggle, [28] Charlie Puth,[29] Rebecca Black,[30] Miranda Cosgrove,[31] and Howie Mandel.[32] Dobrik also often features his friends from his hometown of Vernon Hills, including his assistant Natalie Mariduena.[33]
Personal life
Dobrik dated fellow YouTube personality Liza Koshy from late 2015 to early 2018, revealing their break-up in June 2018. The two have since remained close friends, as seen in their social accounts.[34][35] Dobrik stated that he speaks Slovak and Hungarian.[36] In May 2019, Dobrik legally married Lorraine Nash, Jason Nash's mother, as part of one of his vlogs.[37]
