Hawaii was admitted to the Union on August 21, 1959. Hawaii's senators belong to classes 1 and 3. Only seven people have served as U.S. Senator in the state's history. Its current senators are Democrats Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz.

Class 1
Class 1 U.S. Senators belong to the electoral cycle who were elected for three Congresses in the state's first elections in 1959. The seat in recent years has been contested in 2000, 2006, and 2012. The next election will be in 2018.
C Class 3
Class 3 U.S. Senators belong to the electoral cycle who were elected for two Congresses in the state's first elections in 1959. The seat in recent years has been contested in 2004, 2010, with a special election in 2014, and 2016. The next election for the seat will be in 2022.

Living former U.S. Senators from Hawaii

As of October 2016, there is one former U.S. Senator from the U.S. State of Hawaii who is currently living, from Class 1. The most recent senator to die was Daniel Inouye of Class 3 (1963–2012), who died in office on December 17, 2012. The most recent class 1 senator to die was Hiram Fong (1959–1977) on August 18, 2004. The most recently serving Class 1 senator to die was Spark Matsunaga (1977–1990), who died in office on April 15, 1990.
