New Admin Thank You's

Just a quick "thank you" for voting me for admin. Now all I've got to do is find out how to use these worrying new powers... Grutness|hello? 06:19, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hi BlankVerse,

I would like to thank you for your vote of support and confidence for my adminship, it has been much appreciated. If you need anything in future that requires my attention, please do not hesitate to contact me. :)

- Cheers, Mailer Diablo 18:29, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Let me add my thanks for your support in my nomination as well. I look forward to helping out. - BanyanTree 04:12, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for supporting me on my RfA. It's always nice to get some positive feedback. I hope I can put my new abilities to some good use. -- grm_wnr Esc 17:39, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi BlankVerse. Thank you for supporting my recent RfA. I was surprised and humbled by the number of positives votes. I'll be monitoring RfA regularly from now on and will look for a chance to "pay it forward". In light of your comments, I'll also try to play an active role in trying to help SchmuckyTheCat, Huaiwei and Instantnood resolve their differences. Cheers, --MarkSweep 02:32, 7 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for supporting my RFA. It couldn't have happened without your effort. FeloniousMonk 18:06, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Did you know?

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article grunion, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently-created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Thanks

Hi BlankVerse! Thanks for the compliment on the Presidio article; I'll put it in the DYK queue (usually I forget). Compliments are rare here, and I really appreciate it.

Btw, couldn't agree more with the first comment on your user page: "...mourning the loss of civility and and the loss of too many good editors from the Wikipedia." It's true, and this has been bugging me for some time. There's ten times more complaining about bad behavior, and organized pillories and punishments, than rewards and kudos. Not sure what to do about it, but losing good editors to burnout is a bad thing. Peace and happy editing, Antandrus (talk) 14:48, 23 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

About rotating the photo of the New Otani...

Hello:

Rotating the photo is fine. I wish I had a higher quality original but unfortunately, my digital camera at the time was a real piece of junk (I have a better one now, as you may have noticed from my recent uploads). --Coolcaesar 17:31, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

KRCD

It might not be total booshwah, but it isn't terribly accurate AFAIK. There's an "X-103.1" alternative station in San Bernardino but I don't know the call letters. 103.1 out here is soft rock and 103.9 is a translator for a classic rock station at 106.9 in Yucca Valley. I may Google "X 103.1" when I have a moment. Work's kind of hectic this morning.  :) - Lucky 6.9 17:41, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lots of edits, not an admin...

I'm terribly sorry, but I think I may have accidently knocked you off the list while moving users from the 2.5k list to the 5k list or 7.5k list as needed - a lot of cutting and pasting (although I can't find the diff, so maybe I didn't, but...). I'm going to make it up to you right away, tho, by nominating you for an adminship. I'll give you 12 hours from the time of this post to decline the offer (or prepare your answers). Cheers! -- BDAbramson talk 02:37, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Remember when you said:

Listify and then delete before someone gets the bold idea to do the same for California. A mess of numbers is practically meaningless, while a good list (see List of California State Routes) can be much getter than either categories or navigation boxes.

Yup, guess what happened... Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of California State Routes. --Rschen7754 05:16, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've been investigating the alarming behaviour of this user, including his violation of several of our policies, and plan to start on the most appropriate form of dispute resolution as soon as I have prepared some evidence. Part of that evidence is contained in the abusive comments this user has made towards you.

I would therefore like to extend an invitation to you to advise me of any other users you are aware of that Imdaking has been particularly foul towards. Everything I have is going on User:Robchurch/Imdaking. All help would be appreciated, and if you would like to join me in whatever action I decide to take, you are most welcome to do so.

This user's behaviour is not acceptable. Rob Church Talk 23:19, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I only just realised (despite watching the page) that you'd posted a load of suggestions on User_talk:Robchurch/Imdaking. Thanks for all that, I'll sort some more stuff out soon. Yes, I am going to start with an RfC. Rob Church Talk | FAD 12:28, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

BV, I am not sure I understand what is different about your suggestion from what I am currently doing. See the top of my user page here. Is it not the same thing? I have a menu linking to each page in every language. It appears on the top of all the pages. Take a look and see if this is what you meant.

I even added arrows so you can easily "tour" the pages by just following the arrows from link to link.

Ah, yes! Now I know what you are talking about. That is very cool! I do think I will use both methods for now.
I saw an example of this for the first time yesterday, but I only noticed the addition to the bottom of the page (where categories go), not on the sidebar. If you go to my article which was translated into Hungarian yesterday, you will see the link on the side. I noticed the code being added yesterday, but didn't noticed the sidebar link. Totally cool:

Hi BlankVerse. Am I right to remove the commercial "SF".com links added by 203.84.186.182? I saw that you edited the CUSD article after I removed the link. The anonymous user has since replaced the reverted links on both that article and the LAUSD article. Mike Dillon 14:54, 19 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Note to User:203.84.186.182, User:Cooldude1234, etc.: I'll revert any removal of the name SF.com from my personal talk page. BlankVerse 08:32, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Read Mike Dillions page. He understands the issue and has complied with our requests.. regarding this issue.. we are also in the process of discussing this with the board.. We made a mistake of having our contractors post relevant links on wikipedia even tho they are non commercial and have to do with school information. I guess we made a mistake and wikipedia doesn't want us to offer relevant school information for those schools. Since thats the case, we have ceased after those two links to post any more links. I kindly request you stop post the name SF in your comments. The main reason for this is my client and our users when they type in our name on any search engine because of the great ranks wikipedia has these comments come up. Its not like I'm trying to vandalize your comments its just i believe wikipedia should be used as its intending to promote good content that people want to read and enjoy not derogatory remarks that hurt my client and our users. Thank you for your cooperation. Have a great day :) -Cooldude1234

If anyone is curious about what this is about, they can check the edit history of my talk page [1]
To the "SF".com links folks and their contractors: If what you were offering on your website was freely viewable on the internet without any obligatrions on the part of the viewers and without masses of commercial links accompanying the info, then I would have no objections to including links to your website on the Wikipedia. There are already a few websites that do provide a wealth of information on many US schools and school districts in such a format, so I have been thinking about creating a couple of templates for use by the Schools WikiProject to be added to schools and school district articles. You should read the Wikipedia policies on external links for more information on what is relavant for adding as an external link to articles on the Wikipedia. Sure. I'll help you out as much as I can. Would the IP necessarily be limited to that particular computer or could it be for the whole school? I could probably check this out myself by just seeing if different computers have different IPs at the school. Understand of course that there are over 3,000 students at the school. It is unlikely that anyone would get into any computer-related trouble. The school lacks the skill and presonnel that would be required to enforce its internet policies. The computer that I was at when I wrote that reply is in a pretty open classroom where a lot of students use the computer. (It's also where we produce the school newspaper.) I'm not in the room much of the time, but I could look at when the IP is active on here and have the teacher tell me who's often on the computer at that time. Theshibboleth 05:10, 21 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well in that case, I don't think I could be of much help. I'm just not sure the system administrators would really care enough to try to deal with problem editors in a rational manner. More likely, it seems to me, if they did anything it would be to not allow anyone to access Wikipedia or some such nonsense. I'm not really sure if they'd be able to do this though because last time I checked the internet censorship for LAUSD was managed by a third party. The problem is that even if is the system administrators would understand the problem, they do not enforce restrictions to internet access for individual students. In theory, only students who have agreed to use the internet in a responsible with many (somewhat overly broad) limitations, are allowed to do so. In theory, if a student violates those limitations, he or she will be barred from internet access. In practice, this is unenforcable. It would require that all teachers babysit their students while they are using the internet. This is something most teachers have neither the time nor the interest to do. I assume you have the contact information for the system administrators? The only solution I see, and it's a time-consuming one, is to manually check the IP's recent edits and correct any vandalism. I'll start helping out with this myself. The other thing would be find out what all the LAUSD IPs are so they don't get blocked. Theshibboleth 16:04, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ronald 20

First, i love your "Use Wikipedia at your own risk" poster. It is very pertinent with regard to the science articles.

Second, I just wanted your opinion with regard to the anon user who also appears to be ronald20. I have reverted a few of his edits, even when they look like they might be correct. He seems to always add made up nonsense. Are there examples where he actually contributes with factual information?

I have to say that users like Ronald could be a big problem for wikipedia. We can't verify all these types of edits and it is quite easy for the misinformation to build up. Wikipedia already has a credability problem with this regard and when vandals start to become more sophisticated it will be tough to keep it current and correct. Does wikipedia have a policy on how to policy such random edits? David D. (Talk) 22:00, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the long explanation. I have encountered a similar user in the sports pages. Despite months of attempts at communication there was not a peep from the editor. Eventually I started tweeking the edits he made into a style that was a compromise style and low and behold he actually did copy it. So I think you are right to hold out some hope. Did you notice that I created a template of your disclaimer? See Template:UWAYOR. Maybe you can make changes there and then if others decide to use it too every ones page will be updated simultaneously.
Thanks for the rants links, I share many of those frustrations too. One that really scares me is that other web sites copy verbatim the wiki pages and present them as factual information. Not to mention that many naive users seem to think if it's on the web it must be true. It worries me that wiki half truths are disseminated as facts. Wikipedia should worry too since their reputation could easily take a plunge if it gets out of hand. The least the can do is make the disclaimers more prominent. In that regard you should check out this page and discussion too (Wikipedia:Proposed_update_of_MediaWiki:Tagline). It is a few months old but shares some of your concerns. David D. (Talk) 04:51, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
By the way , notice what Jimbo Wales had to say about a more prominent disclaimer. Something to hide?David D. (Talk) 04:54, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
"I think that you should consider Hanlon's Razor" I hadn't considered that but it would make sense too. For me the more we acknowledge the 'crap' the better. One thing for sure is that wiki has a long way to go, but, i have also learned a lot from the info in wikipedia. It could be (is) a fantastic resource and at the moment I am optimistic it will become useful in my area of interest, science. David D. (Talk) 05:41, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Black Page

You have good points. As a new user to wikipedia, I've been suprised to notice that the best articles tend to be the more obscure ones. The bigger pages tend to self destruct through opinionized and anti-opinionised editing, which seems to result in a lot of words and a lot of trivia, but not much substance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sansvoix (talkcontribs)

Kaibab comments

Thanks for the welcome, BlankVerse, and I appreciate the links (I hope I've been within the starndards of civility, as I certainly aim to be--especially since I was drawn to the idea of Wikipedia based on the idea of open discussion--and like what you had to say in you Black Box as well, despite the fact that I have only a vague notion of its meaning). As per the user ang for Old English I had wanted to put ang-0 to denote that I have dabbled in the language and understand its concepts, but couldn't reasonably speak or understand it. I'm assuming that that template hasn't been created either--as someone quite interested in the linguistics pages, I thought that the xx-0 was perfect for dead languages that one may have studied the grammars of, but could't not actually speak. Thanks again!Kaibab 03:45, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again for the links. It's funny too that you point out how to create links to other lanaguage user sites as I think I discovered how to do that while you typing. As per my open discussion comment, I meant mearly during the editing process, i.e., the discussion page. I like that people seem to be intent on discussing things (civilly) before making rampant edits. It allows a consensus to be formed, and I think leads to a superior encyclopedic article. And, after having done more indepth exploring of the encyclopedia, I can more readily see which articles are excellent examples the original concept of encyclopedia, and which articles require refinement.
I also had a few questions regarding etiquette. It would appear that most communication between users when not related to a specific article is done in the users 'talk' or 'discussion' page, and I see that you requested I put new comments at the bottom. I only put my old one where I did previously for organization, but after having recieved your messages better understand how the communication system works (I hadn't seen the 'you have new messages' before). Does the user then cut and paste comments such as mine to better organize their page? And, my second qeustion, is it appropriate for me to be burdening you with mundane questions such as these, or is there some general page I can go to similar to the one on civility or how to edit a page?Kaibab 07:23, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sakura, Kigo

I have a question for you. On the day that the picture Magical Sakura was featured on the front page, several people expressed dissatisfaction with the picture's manipulated nature. They would like to change the picture to something more technical, which I understand. In the meantime, I'm trying to convince them not to, but in case such a thing should happen, I wonder: Do you think that the picture would be better suited for the Kigo article? I'm asking your opinion because you seem to have done a lot of work there. I would have to have my nice picture become orphaned, but the people do have a point about the unencyclopedia nature of the picture withn the Sakura article itself, especially the picture's presence in the taxobox.

Any advice is appericiated.PiccoloNamek 01:04, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

school disambiguation

This is a major issue. I actually discovered this when doing the Charlotte Public Schools page experiment. Fortunately there seems to now be a consensus on how schools should be named. ie. Washington Elementary School (Charlotte, Michigan). One of the major points i have been trying to make to the school deabte is that by first creating lists, with redirect pages for each school, the disambiguation pages and school pages can be established. THEN, people can worry about the content. At the moment i just see lots of random school articles with no context.

Recently i just checked my local madison high schools on a massive list that the school project was planning to use to create more school stubs, see Wikipedia_talk:Schools/Archive_3#Discussion_of_these_or_other_ideas. On that page i posted the following observation.

In summary i think your points about a disambiguation template need to be brought up sooner than later. Especially since, believe it or not, the school debate may well be close to a consensus!!!!!! David D. [[User talk:Daycd|(Talk)]] 16:51, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools pages are so disfunctional. In fact, I have no idea how i got sucked into it since my real reason for being here is to get the science pages more accurate. Thanks for the help with the signature. I'll make some suggestion in the school discussion re: disambiguation citing some of the examples you pointed out as well as the flaws in relying on blue/red link lists. Cheers David D. Well, it wasn't much of a copyedit in the article's grand scheme, but I figure that grammar- and spelling-related edits make an article more readable (to me, anyway) while the content itself is sorted out. I see what you mean about the templates; I see some others such as "In Use" but they imply the work will only take place for a few minutes. The "Under Construction" is perhaps more applicable, but I've seen so many other websites that have displayed something like that for years. Anyway there's probably a good solution waiting to happen among all these templates... Happy editing, -- Gyrofrog (talk) 17:41, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I see you noticed my additions to the Oxnard article. Thank you for helping edit the section. I have taken you up on the suggestion to write the article Gang injunction. If there is any way I can improve it, please let me know.--Rockero420 21:27, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Haiku page

Hello Blankverse;

I've touched the haiku page a bit - it should be looking better for anyone. The origin of haiku section is edited, errors corrected. Just FYI - I know you're busy with the Kigo page, which looks great.

As for the old pond translation, I replaced Blyth's with my own. First published in Kawazu Awase, a collection of one-on-one hokku matches on the subject of frogs, Bashō's 'old pond' hokku sings of a (or multiple) aurally perceived frog(s).

Best regards,

I agree with you about giving subsections to Imagists and Beat poets. Regarding the Classmates.com essay, I would prefer to refine it a bit more before it gets copied and pasted anywhere. To be clear on the motives of your suggestion, as I don't believe I've had any previous contact with you, which side are you on? I'm chuckling as I write this, not completely disregarding the possibility that I might soon be simultaneously lampooned on several projects as a bigoted, anti-intellectualist, or uber-deletionist zealot, none of which I consider myself, btw. ~~~~ 18:30, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Okay, I've read the involuntary exerpt, and I find the comparison to fancruft particularly damning, especially to those who use templates to blanket-vote keep on all school articles without reading them, which is part of what inspired my essay to begin with. I will do some more writing on it tonight, I think. I need to come up with a title that can be made into a catchy acronym. I'm thinking something that spells "SLICEDBREAD" would be excellent, but I'm struggling on it. By the way, feel free to revert the intentional red link at the top of your talk page if so desired. ~~~~ 19:14, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
I triple-dog-dare you (in a new jersey courtroom) to add "Third desk..." to the template you mentioned. ~~~~ 19:46, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
No, but I did participate in WP:AFD/Whitman Middle School (Seattle, WA) which started it all. It might be worth re-reading. ~~~~ 20:24, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

About Preschool articles...

Many of the inclusionists also vote to keep those as well. Not as many as elementary schools, but some like Nicodemus and Yuckfoo do vote the keep ALL schools, including preschools.Gateman1997 21:54, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

TV Market

Hi, I have noticed that in the past you have edited or created a template for a television DMA (market) in North America, or have edited an articles about television stations. Currently their are several different styles of the template being used. Because of this i have set up a workshop to obtain input on setting up a common configuration for these templates. Feel free to assist at Wikipedia:WikiProject Television Stations/markets. Also while you are their, feel free to leave you name as a participant on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Television Stations as well as any comments you might have, to help wikipedia improve articles on television stations. If you know some one else who has helped contribute to these templates or you think would like to help, please pass this mesage on to them.--Boothy443 | trácht ar 06:45, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the notification, but I already participated in that discussion, voting neutral. ~~~~ 16:16, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

Our friend Ronald

I'll revert that back. That title isn't even correctly formatted. Unless KDIS has an FM affiliate, the proper syntax would be "KDIS-AM" and "KDIS-FM." Thanks for the tip. - Lucky 6.9 20:16, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Will do. Just passing through right now, but I'll take a look ASAP. I changed that KDIS thing back to the original title and left word on the IP talk page as to what the proper formatting of broadcast call letters should be. Heck, I should know.  :) - Lucky 6.9 20:22, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Good question; it's just that I happen to know since I work in the industry. That's an excellent point and should be added to the manual of style if it isn't already there. - Lucky 6.9 20:33, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Which just goes to show ya that I need to read the tutorials a bit more often m'self.  :) I was just signing off but I'll update that later. Thanks for the link; it'll be a tremendous help! - Lucky 6.9 20:53, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Minor Edit Codes

I have noticed that when some edits are made, people use certain shorthand codes to describe their edits. For example, I believe "rv" means "revert," and "sp" means "fixed a spelling error." Is there a Wiki page with these all listed? I would like to become familiar with them. In particular, I wonder if there is a shorthand for grammar or sentence structure edits.
