Military ranks of Iran

This article tackes the ranks and insignia of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is divided into three forces:

Islamic Republic of Iran Army or I.R.I. Army or in Persian ارتش جمهوری اسلامی ایران
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or IRGC or in Persian سپاه پاسداران انقلاب اسلامی
Law Enforcement Force of Islamic Republic of Iran or in Persian نیروی انتظامی جمهوی اسلامی ایران

The IRIA is divided into four branches of service:

Army ground forces
Air force
Air defense force
Navy

Official military ranks

The army, air force, air defence and police use the same rank system, while the revolutionary guard and the navy have separate systems of their own.

Notes on ranks

Junior personnel

Second soldier (Sarbāz dovom) (سرباز دوم) is usually awarded by the end of six months of service after basic training.

Ostovar

The rank of ostovar, a Persian word which in principle means "solid" or "steady", is equivalent to the English-speaking ranks of warrant officers or sergeant majors.

General officers

Second Head of Brigade (Sartip dovom) (سرتيپ دوم) and second flotilla admiral (Daryādār dovom) (دریادار دوم) were created after the Islamic revolution of Iran as part of a new modified ranking system.
Head of Division (Sarlashkar) (سرلشكر) and the naval equivalent (Daryābān) (دریابان) are currently the rank of the heads of the Artesh, Sepah, and the head of Joint Chiefs of Staff.^{[citation needed]}
Corps General (Sepahbod) (سپهبد) and the naval rank of daryāsālār (دریاسالار) have not been in use since the Iran–Iraq War.
General (Arteshbod) (ارتشبد) and Admiral General (Daryābod) (دریابد) have not been conferred since the Iranian Revolution.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Farmāndehe setāde kolle niroohāye mosallah) (فرمانده ستاد کل نیروهای مسلح): It is the highest military post acting as the Chief of Armed Forces General Staff. The post oversees all Commanding Generals of different branches of Iran's armed forces including army, navy, air force, IRGC and other forces. It is not a military rank by itself but only an appointment, and the holder wears the insignia of the current rank.
Commander in Chief (Farmāndehe kolle ghovā) (فرمانده كل قوا) or (Bozorgarteshtārān) (بزرگ‌ارتشتاران): It is the highest political command of the armed forces and is not a military rank by itself. This post is reserved for the Supreme Leader of Iran by the Iranian constitution and as such, does not wear any rank insignia at all.
