Twins?
[edit]Who said that Sayuki and Mimi were twin sisters, because I'm reasonably certain they're not. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.161.60.102 (talk) 21:36, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
General Criticisms(non-germaine to article)
[edit]Wikipedia should let everyone edit everything including the article because the bad translation is actually in the American version and not considered stereotypical but for kids in the Japanese version. Kind of like Super Sentai spin offs in the 1990's there are card game spin offs in 2000's.
I and a lot of People who have seen the series,at least on RTL2 through satelite,in the Czech republic, critisize this series for the following reasons: 1.Its main charachter bears almost and identical(an unntaural) hair-cut of Yugi Muto in Duel Monsters. 2.The character of Shobu is beleived to be a mix of Yugi Muto form YU-Gi-Oh and Tyson from beyblade. 3.Shobus friend Rikota is almost identical to Kenny from Beyblade.
- Wikipedia does allow you to edit everything in this article! --Squilibob 01:43, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
1.Shobu's hair does not look like Yugi's.You could pick out any anime character with spiky hair and say that.
2.I don't care if it's a mix. So,having some of the same personality traits is ripping off?And it's a bad thing?
3.They do look a little alike. They are also similar in their roles in the show. You got me there(kind of).
Prequel:(ad 1:well,I'll tell you this, take a picture of both Yugi Muto (Atem) and Shobu and blank them to a black siluete) .
And
Two things:
1:4.I also have a forth complain, about the at points weird and un-expected conversations (a lot of sensless talk, witch is suposed to be funny).
and 2:to "weasel words" Oh yeah?,go to [[1]] and those that can read czech will definitly find this as ABSOLUTELY TRUE! NEW BABYLON

This page is to discuss the article, not complain about anime cliches. By the way people, use the titles, they are your friend. --V2-Gundam 04:12, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
Anyone notice the swears in the info block. Just letting you know
Absolutely none of these criticisms are valid. Deleting.--WingedOutlaw 16:01, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Duelist Guru Analysis
[edit]The Analysis is completely unnecesary. This is the anime article, since there is a seperate article for the card game, they have no place here.

Why they changed the show radically for America
[edit]It's not all that hard to imagine why. Just think about it, you're a lead creative of a large american media empire, and you are shown a new franchise fresh in from Japan. It's totally and exactly like Yu-Gi-Oh! - to the point of potentially becoming a plagiarism lawsuit time-bomb -, and to add to your plight, it's badly animated, contains silly and non-funny comedy elements, ugly-as-hell 3d rendered cutscenes, and has a below average, typical cardgame anime storyline. Who would watch it? But hey! Let's spice it up a bit... It's already an unwilling parody of the genre, let's make it into a willing one! Then instead of being plagiarism, it will be parody. Instead of lame, it will be funny... And instead of below average, it will be UNIQUE. With all the silly words in bad Japanese used in the duels, with all the monologues making fun of anime cliches, it will be something totally new. And people will watch it for that.
It seems it did work more-or-less, at least the franchise is still alive.

Wizards' terrible marketing is what ruined it. Not to mention, the show was done the wrong way: geared to the wrong audience, and of course edited and dubbed to a typical Americanized anime nightmare... Personally, I think it would've done better taking place within the world of Duel Masters, about the war between the civilizations. 69.214.14.113 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 18:06, 24 January 2010 (UTC).
Breaking the fourth wall
[edit]There are lots of jokes in duel masters that break the fourth wall. They should be mentioned here. Ahmeri18 (talk) 18:00, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Kokujo 3 001 5 0001.jpg
[edit]Image:Kokujo 3 001 5 0001.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

I have no idea what this is about
[edit]Ummm, perhaps an article on a show should mention what the show is about? Maury Markowitz (talk) 13:43, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
- It should but since the article is alreayd tag as needing server attention i think that suggest the article is of poor standard, but there no point adding information like that if it cant be sourced in some way as it makes hte artilce even worse and more work to do--Andrewcrawford (talk - contrib) 14:28, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
Out of order, lots of information lacking, rather American-focused
[edit]Well, the article needs a lot of work. Since I know next to nothing about the subject, I'm just going to make some (hopefully constructive) suggestions…
Firstly, it's not at all clear which area the franchise began with — the manga or the game. I think it makes the most sense if the article is ordered chronologically so far as that goes (right now, the section on the game comes first).
Relatedly, the origin of the card game is told out of order and confusingly:
- The card game was made by Wizards of the Coast. When importing the game from Japan
This is, of course, inconsistent. Tell us first about the Japanese company which actually made the game!
Meanwhile, the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise comes to us out of nowhere. The first mention on the page is in the subsection "Differences between the versions", discussing the anime.
- While the Japanese version seems to rely more on visual and situational humor, the American version tends to use much more verbal humor. Also, while the Japanese version is mostly a traditional card-game show with much humor, the American version is a flat-out parody of the genre. For example, many times in Yu-gi-oh [never mentioned before in this article] Yugi would say "Believe in the heart of your cards," which Shobu also says in Duel Masters.
It would appear that either Duel Masters or Yu-Gi-Oh is strongly influenced by the other franchise, but since the relevant years aren't given, we can't tell which came first. Yu-Gi-Oh, being both very popular and similar, should probably be mentioned in the intro.
Finally, the "Characters" are written as though they come from the anime, but presumably they all first appeared in the manga, so it would make more sense for them to be listed in a subsection under "Manga", with the information on voice actors moved to a subsection under "Anime".

Bias
[edit]There is a LOT of bias in the "differences between versions" section ("In all honesty, the japanese version is more serious than the english"? really? how do WE know that? people say that so much about all the dubs. we don't know about the cultural connatations!) Also, it honestly looks like a weeaboo edited that. The terms that they used are just regular Japanese. Can a fan of this series please check it over, because I have no idea if these terms are meant to be exclusive to Duel Masters. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.117.244.25 (talk) 23:19, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
OTHER Video Game?
[edit]Sorry, but this article is perhaps one of the worst I've seen on here. Aside from anything else, it doesn't mention there WAS a Duel Masters video game released outside of Japan on the PS2, simply titled "Duel Masters". It features five game-exclusive player characters, each of whom specialise in one of the five civilisations. Knight from the Anime appears to each of them in order to make them raise their ranks to "Master", obtain so-called legendary cards for their element and then face off against Widow who wants to control the civilisations for herself. The game also had OPEN cheat codes, which were all accessed by holding R3 and pressing certain buttons (X-[]-Triangle, for example, would take one card from your deck and add it to your shields). Overall, I think this other video game needs recognition. Jonouchisan (talk) 05:50, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Which idea was first?
[edit]Seriously, which idea was first? Was it originally a manga that evolved into TCG, anime and so on, or the TCG idea came out first but started with manga? JSH-alive/talk/cont/mail 08:05, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
- Manga turned into Anime Series and corresponding TCG. Yami Michael (talk) 13:35, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
- Based on release dates? Yes. But we don't know how (Takara) Tomy planned the franchise. We need more resources on how they developed the entire franchise. JSH-alive/talk/cont/mail 17:19, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- You would think I'm kidding...but that sort of resource just doesn't exist. The main sites for the game are the English wikia, as well as a Japanese atwiki site. Both cant really be taken as a "source", and the takaratomy site is more kid-focused, and doesn't really feature articles and details about design (like how Magic design the game/franchise). If I find anything decent, I'll post it, but yeah.

Info on the manga at all is usually sparse and spread between places (including the JPN wikipedia page). Other then when it changed for a series to promote Magic the Gathering, there was no real plan to switch to a TCG. They might have been planning it from book 1 (until book 7/8 switched to the Duel Masters game) or it was a last minute thing, and then the game and anime followed. Too hard to determine. :/ Yami Michael (talk) 18:16, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
- You know... I think this is the only mention throughout all of the article and the Talk page (and probably anything on English Wikipedia relating to Duel Masters) about the Duel Masters manga first using Magic: the Gathering before making its own pale imitation.
