Pronunciation Please

[edit]

I've seen Featherstonehaugh (with an E) used as an example of eccentric English spellings (with pronunciation "fan-shaw") ([1]). I don't know whether the page author was making this up (his style is somewhat over the top), or whether it's a real pronunciation but George William here has a different pronunciation, but I would like the correct pronunciation info to be added to the page. Thank you. Kilyle 08:33, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have added material concerning Featherstonhaugh's role as a spy during the Cherokee Removal. I may not have done the reference in the proper format. (207.245.188.77 (talk) 19:21, 14 July 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Lead paragraph

This article needs a lead paragraph detailing who this man actually is! Mdcollins1984 15:02, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality

[edit]

I am a scholar of Featherstonhaugh and have repeatedly explained why the consensus, as expressed by Berkeley and Berkeley's 'George William Featherstonhaugh: The First U.S. Government Geologist' is that the man is best described as an Anglo-American. To call him "British", as one vandal insists on doing, is inaccurate. This is not controversial. He contributed a great deal to the United States and was deeply involved with American politics, especially in his decades long correspondence with Henry Clay. It is unproductive to edit the page with an agenda and without explanation, persistently effacing any notion that he identified with his adoptive country. Please desist. If you feel an alternate label is appropriate, please engage in discussion and provide references. I'll be glad to be convinced.Bibliordic (talk) 19:23, 26 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
