Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on March 17, 2009.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that The Simpsons episode "In the Name of the Grandfather", scheduled to debut on Sky One, will be the first episode of the show to air in Ireland before airing in the United States?

Why broadcast first in Europe?

[edit]

Is there any information on why it is to be broadcasted first in Europe yet? Will there ever be any information or is this just enough? Indianparttime2 (talk) 03:30, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's a special episode. Since it's St. Patrick's day, it's like a tribute I guess. -- A talk/contribs 17:12, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Pretty much, it's also part of the 20th anniversary celebration. On a related note, some episodes of the show have aired on Global in Canada an hour or so before airing in the United States (usually on nights of the Survivor finale, Global pushes The Simpsons to 7). It's nothing major, but it might be worth noting because it would explain why the article just says its the first to air first on Sky1 or in Europe. Does anyone have a reliable source that mentions this? None of the sources I've seen mention it. -- ScorpionO'422 17:21, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Closed Captions

[edit]

When I watched this episode on TV I noticed a discrepancy between some of the dialog and the captions that I felt was odd. It was in the scene where Homer and Grandpa are drunk and rolling on barrels and fall down (the scene after the one with the blarney stone). Grandpa Says "I just had a Nightmare. That I was back with your mother." and then Homer says "Oh how I miss her." Well I swear to God the captions said "I just had a Nightmare. That I was in England." and then Homer says "Oh how I hate them". I was wondering if anyone else caught this as they seem to have fixed the captions on HULU. It just seemed like a secret message or something. That the episode was based in Ireland would seem to lend credence to this. Lewiscode (talk) 22:57, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That's not notable at all. CTJF83Talk 02:04, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, captions go screwy on many different shows all the time. Not sure why, though. Lots42 (talk) 19:23, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

German Krusty

[edit]

If anyone wants to add information about German Krusty in this episode, here is the dialogue:

  • Krusty: "Heil, heil"
  • Mel: "Ach, Du lieber! Krusty spritzende Gaswasser."
  • Krusty: "Ja, ja - Krusty spritzende Gaswasser."

"Heil, heil!" is a reference to "Heil" used by the Nazis.
"Ach, Du lieber!" means as much as "oh my god" and is always used when a Simpson character speaks German (especially when Hitler is on the Simpsons).
"Krusty spritzende Gaswasser" is hard to interpret as it contains incorrect grammar. "Krustys spritzendes Gaswasser" would mean "Krusty's splashy gas water"; "Krusty stritzt Gaswasser" would mean "Krusty splatters gas water". Gas water seems to be a reference to the gas showers in Nazi concentration camps where gas came out of the shower instead of water.
"Ja, ja" just means "yes, yes".
FAThomssen (talk) 11:19, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the effort you put, but (unfortunately) that isn't notable. Try this site, however, and they'd be quite glad to accept it. -- A talk/contribs 01:53, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GA Review

[edit]
This review is transcluded from Talk:In the Name of the Grandfather/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Article looks very good. Only a few minor concerns and suggestions:

  • Markéta Irglová as an Eastern European woman - link to Eastern Europe could be useful
    • Done.
  • the first episode written by Matt Marshall. He had previously worked on the show - combine sentences as "Matt Marshall, who had..."
    • Done.
  • a lot of the writers on 'The Simpsons' who have Irish ancestry - drop quotation marks in 'The Simpsons' for italics, as it doesn't alter the quote
    • Done.
  • Rio de Janeiro's tourist board–who claimed that the city was portrayed as having rampant street crime, kidnappings, slums, and monkey and rat infestations–went so far - either use emdashes or space out the endashes per WP:DASH
    • Done.
  • Inconsistency between curly and non-curly apostrophes, i.e. ’ and ' , so pick one and change the rest
    • Done.
  • In the final episode - clearer to say "final cut/version of the episode"
    • Done.
  • Other Irish references include Grampa dancing in Riverdance style,[22] Homer mentions Angela’s Ashes,[23] musicians Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová reprise their roles from the 2007 Irish film Once and a billboard advertises a U2 moving company with the slogan "We Move in Mysterious Ways".[23] - in order for this to make sense as a whole sentence opening with "other references include..." all of the verbs should end with -ing, as is done for "Grampa dancing". But grammatically, that should then be "Grampa's dancing", so after all the verbs are changed to -ing, each respective noun should be changed to possessive, unless you can word it alternatively. See User:Tony1/Advanced editing exercises#A common problem—noun plus -ing for a better explanation and some exercises.
    • I took a crack at splitting it up. Is it better?
  • It aired at 7:30 PM on Sky1 - "it" isn't the best way to open a paragraph, especially considering the episode wasn't the last noun to be used
    • Fixed.
  • They offered odds on things - the bookmaker is singular not plural hence "they" should be "it"
    • Fixed.
  • File:In the Name of the Grandfather.jpg isn't of low resolution, so doesn't really qualify as fair use - just scale it down a bit
    • I tagged it with fairusereduce.

Nice work with the article. You have seven days to make the necessary changes, so good luck :) —97198 (talk) 01:38, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The changes all look good. I'll resize the image myself quickly before I pass the article. —97198 (talk) 08:12, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Derry Air

[edit]

I added in a note about the Derry Air, or Londonderry Air which was its original name. The name of the airline was a pun on the tune of Danny Boy, but it probably went way over the heads of most people. I suspect most people saw it only as a pun on derrière. Michael of Lucan (talk) 10:21, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I see I started an edit war. To any Irish person, the reference to the Derry Air is patently obvious. The reference to Derry, the city, is a side issue. I'm going to stay out of the quarrel. Michael of Lucan (talk) 16:39, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Celtic FC

[edit]

Should be noted that in the pub there is clearly the crest of Celtic on the wall and also theres a person in the bar wearing a Celtic FC shirt. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.17.232.220 (talk) 23:36, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cultural references

[edit]

The scene where Tom O'Flanagan watches old video tapes may be a reference to Samuel Becketts "Krapps Last Tape". Beckett actually shows up in Grampas flashback singing with Joyce, Wylde and a white bearded man which could be Bernard Shaw. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.219.84.225 (talk) 20:11, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It would need a reliable source before it is added. CTJF83 20:24, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
