Word choice

[edit]

Is Wikipedia a place for terms like "and since then she has fallen in love with the sport" I don't think so, and want to remove this language, but don't know how to fill in the holes... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.26.104.63 (talk) 03:15, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The section "" Jade attended flint high school were she was bullied for being gay. This did not stop Jade in her quest to find fame and she kicked her way to the top, thus gaining the name the “head hunter” "" seems biased and impossible to reference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.48.238.149 (talk) 22:32, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

repetitive sections

Nationality

[edit]

For any biased users who undo people's edits (*cough* Trident13 *cough*) who doesn't think her nationality shouldn't be listed as British just go ahead and look at the search engine information of her OWN website (jadejones.co.uk) and I quote: "Jade Jones is a British Tae Kwon Do athlete from Wales, hoping to win gold at the London Olympics 2012." source: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=jade+jones (82.44.72.174 (talk) 19:08, 10 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]

So why did you say she was "British Welsh"? I've changed the text to match what Jones herself says. And I've removed the entirely pointless links to UK, London, Russia etc... (please don't link common geographical terms). I've also fixed up a couple of incomplete references and their placement. Cheers! The Rambling Man (talk) 19:43, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, sorry, I just undid the original re-edit which said she was only Welsh, I didn't do anything else. Cheers! (82.44.72.174 (talk) 19:46, 10 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]

She is regarded as a Welsh athlete, just as every other Welsh athlete who has represented Team GB in an Olympic games is listed on wikipedia (Colin Jackson, Dai Greene, Nicole Cooke, Tanni Grey-Thompson, Geraint Thomas, Cecil Griffiths, John Ainsworth-Davis, Ryan Giggs, etc). This issue seems to be constantly raising it's ugly head, and for the sake of consistency, please refrain from deviating away from the agreed protocols.Aldwynson (talk) 19:52, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The only reason they are being listed as Welsh is because of people like you, who go around patrolling the aforementioned articles undoing edits with no explanation whatsoever, even if the evidence says otherwise. She's listed herself as a British athlete on her own website for crying out loud! What's your explanation for that then? (82.44.72.174 (talk) 20:02, 10 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Please do not spam the talk option with ad hominem attacks, and refrain from deviating from established wikipedia norms of classification for some sort of nationalistic agenda.Aldwynson (talk) 20:06, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
She's a British athlete who happens to have been born in Wales. She doesn't even live there. Thanks. She has won all her major titles for Great Britain, not Wales. Please stop the nationalism, it's entirely pointless. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:21, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Where one lives does not change where one is born. Please refrain from bringing nationalistic arguments into what is a straightforward issue. Please see previous example of people classified as Welsh who do not live in Wales that have represented Great Britain at an Olympic games and won medals exclusively for the Great British team (despite the fact for whom one competes does not change a fixed legal definition of nationality), (Ryan Giggs, Tammi Grey-Thompson, Geraint Thomas), also, she resides in Manchester due to her training facilities being located there. She has also been referred to as Welsh in all aspects of media discussion, she has also established her self as Wales in the media and during her celebration upon winning the medal. This was not an issue until she won a gold medal, and at the moment it seems to be oozing a nationalistic agenda, an issue which has not been raised with other such athletes of the home nations, who are classified in their appendix as their home nation nationality, and as British under their info box nationality. Can an explanation be given as why this is different be put forward.Aldwynson (talk) 20:30, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You have failed to address the fact that she is British from the source that I have previously posted. So what you're saying is she is wrong about her own nationality? There is nothing more to discuss until you have addressed this. (82.44.72.174 (talk) 20:47, 10 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]

She is British, just as she is Welsh. However, wikipedia protocol on classification of British people is to list their home nation status in the appendix, and the "British" status in the info box. It comes across as inconsistent when this basic form of classification is not followed, especially when it is followed by every other media outlet, for a reason that just seems to be for some nationalistic agenda, rather than being factually correct. She also consistently references herself as Welsh on her personal twitter, feed. A quick example of credible media outlets preferring to refer to her as Welsh include: Wales Online, BBC,TNT UK, Argus, Huffington,ITV. It seems you persistently try to engage myself into an "edit war". Please refrain from doing so. I raise the point of muse, that will Fred Evans' nationality miraculously change should he also win a gold medal tomorrow? Aldwynson (talk) 21:14, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This will never go away bit it is stunning that all this brain power cannot come up with an acceptable way of describing a girl born in Wales who represents GB.--Egghead06 (talk) 04:58, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There is though. Like I said, protocol on any person who is indisputably of Welsh ethnicity is listed as Welsh in the appendix, followed by their nationality listed as British in the info box, I fail to see why Jade Jones is any different whatsoever. The only notable exceptions are those people who were born when England-Wales borders had not been legally established (for example, Bertrand Russell). It's quite frankly comical the levels in which some people will go to, to deliberately smear facts for some form of anti-ethnic agenda. If we are now using this new system of labelling every person from the United Kingdom, as British in their appendix, then all articles related to English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish peoples must now be amended. A small example of articles than now need to be amended for you to start off (as you feel so strongly about this subject, I'm sure you wouldn't mind taking up the mantle): David Beckham, should be listed as British, not English. Alex Salmond should now be listed as British, not Scottish. Tom Jones, should now be listed as British, not Welsh. Andy Murray should now be listed as British, not Scottish. Can you not see the absurdity of it? Aldwynson (talk) 10:20, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
All of your examples are apples to pears. Salmond is a Scottish MP and represents Scottish Parliament. Beckham is an English footballer who played for England. Tom Jones has no national affiliation other than Wales. Jones has represented Great Britain so to all intents and purposes she is notable as a British taekwondo practitioner. Anyway, life's too short for this nationalism. I'm going to get on with support Team GB who are winning medals for Britain! The Rambling Man (talk) 10:26, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Far easier would be to say.....xxxx is a footballer/canoeist etc. Born in xxx he/she has represented xxx. No nationalism, no confusion of country of birth/country represented, no jingoism.--Egghead06 (talk) 10:42, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It would be yes, but that is not really the system used. And yes, I had to use examples such as Alex Salmond because people are still not responding as to why she is the only athlete that has represented and won medals for Great Britain of Welsh ethnicity that has to be labelled differently to every other athlete (as the examples I gave in my previous post, Ryan Giggs, Tammi Grey-Thompson, Dai Greene etc). Why are people so fervently against the standard use of labelling for this one particular athlete? It's borderline bizzare. I agree, life is too short for nationalism, so if we are in mutual agreement, why is this still an issue, why are people still insistent of editing and re-editing the article. I propose that to appease all areas of the British isle, in the appendix, we should list her as Chris Hoy is listed (the result of the compromise came from a more or less exactly the same discussion that is going on here): Sir Christopher Andrew "Chris" Hoy, MBE (born 23 March 1976) is a Scottish and British track cyclist representing Scotland and Great Britain. So the line would be "Jade Jones (born 21 March 1993) is a British and Welsh taekwondo athlete who represented Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympics..." And we can finally draw a line under the entire matter, because I for one am getting rather sick of returning to the "Jade Jones" article. And I echo Rambling Man, go Team GB! Aldwynson (talk) 12:41, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It would be easier but that is not the system used !!! Says all I need to know - we just like making it hard for ourselves!--Egghead06 (talk) 13:14, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have just looked and it says Taekwondo was accepted as a commonwealth game sport in 2010, so i would support putting she is a Welsh and British.. etc in the introduction. If she only competes for Team GB then id see more justification for simply putting British, afterall this compromise wont be repeated on footballer or rugby player pages saying they are British. BritishWatcher (talk) 12:58, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This whole debate is about one jigoistic Anon who wishes to impose their own perspective on agreed Wikipedia protocol. We get fools like this on the Wales page regularly questioning whether Wales is a country. This is also the Anon who as part of their campaign questioned Chris Hoys nationality! I thought that I had closed this issue with Welsh born/representing GB in the Olympics, but then the Anon starts their jingoistic debate here. Placed a Vandal2 warning on their page as a result of this/Chris Hoy. Rgds --Trident13 (talk) 01:24, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the warning. Have you threatened everyone else with one who dared to say the truth and that she is British (which she said herself)? So is this how it works on Wikipedia, where sources which state factual information mean absolutely nothing and biased nationalist editors' OPINIONS are everything? Certainly looks that way. Any by the way, Chris Hoy also said he was British as well as Scottish, check the sources on his article. And let me point out that in giving me these warnings and reverting mine and others edits, you have not once given any factual evidence to back it up... one time you just simply said in the description of one of your reversions of my edits: "Welsh is Welsh" Says it all. I am going to revert your vandalism, and if I end up being banned from Wikipedia thanks to you it will just prove my above point. 82.44.72.174 (talk) 02:27, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So somebody semi-protected the article (wonder who?....) So I guess I won't be reverting. But for some more evidence that she is in fact British, go to her Twitter page (http://twitter.com/jadejonestkd) where @sb_1995 tweeted: "@jadejonestkd Please RT (Re-Tweet) if your #Proud2BeBritish." She re-tweeted. 82.44.72.174 (talk) 03:02, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that she said she was proud to be British was purely due to the events at the time. If she represented Wales she would say she was proud to be Welsh. The fact that she brought out the Welsh flag is evident that she identifies as Welsh. I'm Welsh, but also British. I don't understand why you're all making such a fuss. I'm sure all the other notable people whose wiki articles state Welsh are also proud to be British.--Cymru123 (talk) 20:46, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I know that this debate is long over (thank goodness) and consistency has been upheld (again, thank goodness), but I wonder what some of those above would make of the fact that after winning a gold medal in Rio this week, she took a Welsh flag from the audience and waved it? Clearly not interested in Wales! I know, I know, this kind of debate dogs a lot of Wikipedia articles, but I was just looking at the page for more information after her win.
