I hereby request the administration to move the page to replace 'Meenakshi temple' with 'Shri Meenakshi Sundareshwarar temple, Madurai', which is a historical temple and is very accurate to mention the temple in Madurai, because there are so many temples in the name of 'Meenakshi temple', in various parts of Tamil Nadu. References provided are nothing but spam[edit]

The references used in this article are mostly spammy and commercial links. Most of them have no any value as a source of authentication. Why do those references be removed? Akilash (talk) 10:41, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions[edit]

While the article is better is shape and style, but as a GA, the article fails "broad in coverage" criterion IMO. Expand the article. Write on the following

  • History: who built, expanded. see http://www.maduraimeenakshi.org/menu_pg.php?id=2?s_id=5
  • Architecture:
    • Gopurams
    • More about halls: it is a huge temple with many mandapas [1]
    • Expand Shrines to constitute the sanctums of Meenakshi and Shiva
    • Religious importance section: no of visitors, virtues on worshipping in this particular temple

The article is quite far from being a GA. It needs to be thoroughly copy-edited. For example, check out the first sentence in "History" section

Meenakshi(eyes resembling fish) is the principal deity, but not Sundareswarar and she is worshipped on her own, although the festive occasion of her marriage to Sundareswarar is celebrated annually by 50,000 pilgrims

The architecture, history, shrines and halls are widely expanded. Please suggest to promote to next level. Also considering that this is a wonder from India nominated next only to Tajmahal, shouldn't this article be of 'High' importance in India project. ssriram_mt(talk - my page - contribs)

  • Also split "The Temple" into History and Architecture. "The initiative to rebuild..." does not have references.
  • "The 7-foot tall sculpture of Ganesh carved of single stone lies outside the shrine" which shrine - Meenakshi or Shiva one?
  • "Shiva killing the demon child" who? context needed
  • Mandapam or Mandapa - stick to 1 spelling
  • Halls: there is no location given for the halls. See [3] which gives you the location of the hall with respect to the other one.
  • Alphabetize the References by author.

@SmokeyJoe: Amman in this context refers to mother goddess in Tamil. It is similar to mataji/ma in Hindi and Ammavaru in Telugu. It is mostly added to every goddess Temple name in India by devotees for their gratitude, devotion and respect. agasthyathepirate(talk) 18:17, 19 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Andrewa: Category:Shakti temples is the list of Amman(Goddess) temples in India. In this list, Temples outside TamilNadu are not having that word Amman/Ammavaru as a part of Temple name. By removing that word Amman, the meaning of the title will never change and it makes more sense to wide range of readers. There may be very few excpetions in this convention, but this temple will not fall under that. Rest of the world will know it as Meenakshi Temple or Madurai Temple. Amman is just to add more glory to the title. Also look at discussion under Talk:Padmavathi Temple, Tiruchanur. Not only for this temple, the words Maa/Mathaji/Amman/Ammavaru/Swamy/Perumal can be removed from titles of temples(with exceptions) as they are not official, its only added by devotees who created articles. The official site of this temple also never mentioned this word as a part of Title - It states it as "Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple". Google search results: Meenakshi Temple: 5,58,000 results and Meenakshi Amman Temple: 4,52,000 results agasthyathepirate(talk) 05:11, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This and the discussion to which you link at Talk:Padmavathi Temple, Tiruchanur#Requested move 21 July 2015 both appear to miss the point completely, and on many different grounds.
It appears to me that both you and the nominator there, Vin09 (and I'm guessing also others involved), are unaware that English Wikipedia has formal naming conventions, is that correct? When you say naming conventions, you both appear to just mean current practice as you see it. Or is there an informal convention at WikiProject India that I have missed?
This probably explains the appeals to the official names in both instances. These are (or should have been) of marginal relevance both to the previous discussion and to this one.
The Google searches you quote would be relevant but the figures are too close to make any difference, assuming you mean 558,000 and 452,000 (following the English grouping convention as we do here). Andrewa (talk) 06:23, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Andrewa: Yes this is how in course of time other Temple articles in India have been renamed to keep just including temple name and place name. That is the reason I requested move with the comment 'as per naming coventions follwed by other temple articles'. All the common words like Amman/Ammavaru/Maa(goddess) and swamy/perumal(gods) etc., were removed from the titles even though it is part of the temple name which is generally reffered to by every one. If this is against any Wiki policy then I believe it would definitly need broader discussion.
I beileve the discussion in Talk:Padmavathi Temple, Tiruchanur#Requested move 21 July 2015 doesn't appeal to Official name, but it went against.
For example, If there are goddess Lakshmi Temples in locations 1.North India, 2.AndhraPradesh and 3.TamilNadu. This is how Article Titles look like respectively based on regionality. 1.Maa Lakshmi Temple/Lakshmi matha Temple 2.Lakshmi ammavari Temple 3. Lakshmi Amman Temple.   • Majority of news articles mentioned the temple as Meenakshi Temple/Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. However there are few articles which also mentioned it as Meenakshi Amman Temple. The book and news references given in the article referred it as Meenakshi Temple/Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.

Don't ask me to cite WP naming conventions directly, but the general convention in english WP is to avoid honorifics unless they are officially part of someone's title, and even there they are given as an afterthought. E.g., in bios, it's "X, lord of Y" or "A, princess of B", not *Lord X or *Princess A. For deities, the honorifics are omitted entirely unless they have become lexicalized as part of the name in English (e.g. Beelzebub). — kwami (talk) 22:15, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is a mess[edit]

Many contributors to this and related articles and discussions seem to have no knowledge of English Wikipedia policies and procedures. The naming convention on which this RM and others have been based appears not to exist. There is consequently a long history of moves to this and other articles made purely on the basis of personal preference of the editor, and in some cases reversed by a following editor on a similar basis. It is possible that conventions used in other languages, and other language Wikipedias, have been at least part of the basis of these preferences, but these other language conventions have no authority here.

A significant amount of the article history appears to have been left at Meenakshi temple following this cut and paste move in 2006.

That title and Meenakshi Temple both redirect here. There appears to be no reason that this article should not be named Meenakshi Temple.

Thanks. The same issue exists in almost majority of the Temple titles. Both disambiguation and honorifics which are not mentioned in any of the reliable sources. How to deal with this.
