Karman was Jewish
[edit]I am unable to understand the last edit. There are abundant references that he was Jewish:
- Amazon.com "Theodore von Karman, a Jewish immigrant and pioneer in aviation and space science"
- Theodore von Karman in his own words "A native Jewish Hungarian"
- In Encyclopaedia Judaica, list of Jewish mathematicians, art. "Mathematics"
- "The National Medal of Science has only now been conferred on Dr. Theodore von Karman, a Jewish scientist who emigrated to America from Hungary in 1930." Jewish Chronicle, March 1 1963, p.18.
- [1] "Theodore von Karman, born to a middle-class Jewish family"
- JINFO list of Jewish physicists
- Air Force Magazine "Theodore von Karman was a third son, born to a middle-class Jewish family in Budapest"

RAND
[edit]Nicholas Dawidoff, The Catcher Was a Spy, Vintage, 1994, ISBN 0679762892, p. 257 says that von Kármán had a part in founding the RAND Corporation, but does not elaborate. Probably worth someone researching further and following up. Dawidoffs endnotes suggest that he was working from von Kármán's book with Lee Edson, The Wind and Beyond, possibly p. 246–248. - Jmabel | Talk 20:09, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for the tip to Dawidoff. Nothing yet for RAND, but he supplied material for AGARD and Paul Rosbaud. — Rgdboer (talk) 03:35, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
Surname
[edit]Shouldn't he be referred to by surname as just Kármán, rather than von Kármán, just like Beethoven? Currently the article is inconsistent too. —DIV —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.250.204.118 (talk) 07:26, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
Award in his name
[edit]There is a SIAM award in his name, the Theodore_von_Karman_Prize ref. [2]
- Thank you editor ?? The SIAM award is now mentioned in Awards and Honors. — Rgdboer (talk) 21:12, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
possible TvK "relic" in Aachen/Germany
[edit]There is a Theodore von Karman room at the institute for fluid mechanics and aerodynamics (his former position in Aachen). I had an oral examination on aerodynamics in this room, of which is said to be his old office, equipped with his old desk and some furniture. I´m not quite sure, if this is really the truth, but it was a hell of a good inspiration. Its plausible, that the furniture is real, but I don´t really expect the building to be old enough für this, cause Aachen was nearly completely leveled in the end of WW2

Lecture series
[edit]JPL’s Theodore von Kármán Lecture Series is perhaps worth noting in the article? --Mortense (talk) 02:47, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
Already added it before coming to the talk page, so apparently we're in agreement! -Mo (talk) 21:07, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
date aerojet was formed
[edit]on the aerojet page, the date that Haley formed the company was 1942. Here it is listed as 1936. Which is correct? The 1936 date is reported as just a series of discussions with von Karman. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:4000:C950:B06F:CF66:6413:2AA8 (talk) 17:57, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
"In 1943, von Kármán, Malina, Parsons, and Forman established the Aerojet Corporation to manufacture JATO rockets." [quote from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory article] no mention of Haley. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:4000:C950:B06F:CF66:6413:2AA8 (talk) 18:09, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
Why orthography ⟨ll⟩ but pronunciation [l]?
[edit]The current article contains:
”Theodore von Kármán (Hungarian: (szőllőskislaki) Kármán Tódor [(søːløːʃkiʃlɒki)ˈkaːrmaːn ˈtoːdor]”
As far as I know, written double l,thus ⟨ll⟩, in Hungarian coincides with pronunciation of geminated [lː], not [l].
Why is the ⟨ll⟩ spelling in ⟨szőllőskislaki⟩ used but [l] in ⟨søːløːʃkiʃlɒki⟩?Redav (talk) 02:38, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

Theodore von Kármán (1881–1963) was a Hungarian-American mathematician, aerospace engineer and physicist who worked in aeronautics and astronautics. He was responsible for crucial advances in aerodynamics characterizing supersonic airflow. The human-defined threshold of outer space is named the Kármán line in recognition of his work. This 1959 photograph shows von Kármán (left) joined by United States Air Force and NASA officials while inspecting two missile models used in the high-velocity, high-altitude wind tunnels at Arnold Air Force Base. The missiles shown are the AGARD-B and the Atlas Series-B. Photograph credit: United States Air Force; restored by Chris Woodrich
