NPOV

[edit]

Large portions of the 'Campus' and 'Student Life' sections need to be thoroughly edited for NPOV. At the moment it reads like an anti-Vellore diatribe: some of it may well be accurate, but sources need to be cited. --Nick Boalch ?!? 15:08, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This article has been subject to a lot of vandalism. I urge anyone making changes to please cite any sources. An article from the Washington Post may help resolve a few issues. - Yogi (talk) 06:51, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I cut a large section of the Campus section and all of the Student Life sections, while trying to tone down some of the promotional language at the same time. The link cited as evidence of the networking/wi-fi issues did not actually discuss anything of the sort, so I dropped it to the external links section. Anything that's verified can be restore, but it needs to be accompanied by citations to a source that supports it. --Michael Snow 21:50, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have restored a some of parts of student life section with citations. In order to arrive at the conclusion of the inflexible course structure after looking through the course listing for most of the degrees offered. This is the course lisiting for B.tech in Computer Science. The links to the course structure of other degrees are also present. - Yogi (talk) 22:59, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There is hardly any use to have this entry in wikipedia if you are maintaining the wiki like this. There's nothing here but links to the VIT website.
Thanks both for your efforts. I've removed the NPOV tag. --Nick Boalch ?!? 12:33, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I urge yogi not to keep deleting whatever is being added to this page. There's nothing left but skeleton. Let this page be of some use where people who've really been at VIT add something to it rather than some person who is sitting in washington and writing for a living without knowing the ground facts. An article published in other geography cant change the facts existing here.

Thank You. hooaamai (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 06:09, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am telling you all that stuff about "popular among" blah blah and "famous for" blah blah are not needed in an encyclopedia. I am a student of VIT. A lot of claims were actually false. "I agree with hooaami this "Mr YOGI" is Paid Employee of VIT who looks specially for Blogs advertisment and Wikipedia section on VIT"Mechboyabhishek (talk) 07:10, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Absolute nonsense. Please don't make unverified claims, and add un-sourced content. - Amog | Talkcontribs 07:16, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I assure you "Mr. YOGI" has not been paid by VIT for providing any PR stunt on Wikipedia. If you are not able to back up your statements with credible sources as citation, I suggest you refrain from changing the contents of the article. I haven't been maintaining this article since 6 Jan 2006 (article as of 7 Jan 2006) and crediting any vandalism of the article after this date to me, is unacceptable. Please refrain from making such unsubstantiated allegations. Yogi (talk) 07:13, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is no scope for improving this article at any cost. Some of the people here are so busy advertising the college here rather than presenting facts and citiation. If advertising is what you are looking for, a website is a right place rather than wikipedia. Hooaamai (talk) 05:05, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Vitlogo.gif

[edit]

Image:Vitlogo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Criticism from unspecified sources

[edit]

The criticism appears to be totally unsourced and could well be the work of a vandal, a frustrated one at that.

Latest re-writing

[edit]

I have re-written the entire article and have tried to make it appear more encyclopaediac and neutral. I will add more sections to this soon and sincerely hope that I can expect positive contributions from everyone. To all the vandals or Advertisers out there, Wikipedia is not a place to express your personal feelings, nor is it a place for advertisement. I would also advise any editors not to copy paste material from the VIT website as was done in the edit before mine. If you want to contribute to Wikipedia, remember, you are contributing to an encyclopaedia and not writing up your diary or advertising something. I apologise in advance if any of you feels that I sounded offensive, but a look the history of the article made me feel that it would be better to put this note out. Manoj Prajwal (talk) 00:01, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved the article from a being classified a stub to class C. I believe the article is now large enough and has enough material to be classified at that level. Manoj Prajwal (talk) 14:37, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note to editors: Please remember to check what your changes do to the article before saving them. Changes like [1] and [2] end up creating unnecessary dead links. Please remember that the show preview or sandbox buttons exist to help you check the changes you have made. Manoj Prajwal (talk) 02:29, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have once again had to undo another act of possible vandalism from ip 117.199.144.115. I once again post an open request. If anyone makes a major change tot he article, please make sure you do it after logging in, and leave a not in the talk section outlining why you did it. I see absolutely no reason for blanking out the entire academia and research section as was carried out by the above mentioned ip address. Manoj Prajwal (talk) 15:37, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Added later- The work was that of a vandal. Some of his changes were deemed offensive and removed by cluebot.

I just undid the last edit by 121.242.63.4 as I feel a list of alumni has no place in the History section. Also, if a list of famous alumni has to be started, then it needs a lot more than one name to be one it. Manoj Prajwal (talk) 11:36, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Whoever has created the "Ranking" section has done that at the risk of sounding too desperate. "Research" is a sub-section while "Ranking" is a main one. Doesn't make too much sense...does it?? Lets try to improve the article by posting the realities with citations rather than advertising. Hooaamai (talk) 09:30, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Page Moved

[edit]

Even though VIT is a university, we can not deny the fact that it's 'actual' name is Vellore Institute of Technology. The name 'VIT University' is not the right way to address VIT. Also, as an example, one can look at the wiki-articles such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology or any other US University. Cheers!!! *Truth* (talk) 10:40, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal to move the Vellore Institute of Technology page back to VIT University.

[edit]

Moving the article from VIT University to Vellore Institute of Technology is unnecessary. As a former VIT student, I can definitely tell you that this university was originally called Vellore Institute of Technology. However, it is now officially known as VIT University. For further clarification, I would direct attention to the University website. Please note the logo on the website. It says 'VIT University'. The words 'Vellore Institute of Technology' form a part of this logo but are not the official name of the university. Both the university's official logos say VIT University and not Vellore Institute of Technology.

    File:Vit-logo(2).png File:VIT_logo.png

The general mailing address page on the same website also says the address is

   · VIT University
     Vellore - 632 014
     Tamilnadu, India
     Tel: 91-416-2243091 / 93
     Fax: 91-416-2243092, 91-416-2240411

Last but not least, the degree certificates I received from this university also attest to the fact that its name is VIT University and not Vellore Institute of Technology. *Truth* (talk) has likened the naming system of VIT to that of Massachusetts Institute of Technology which is not so. I would like to point out that there are quite a few institutions that are labelled 'VIT' when their names are abbreviated, for example Vidyalankar Institute of Technology and Vaishnavi Institute of Technology. Both these institutions and the others that have a similar abbreviated name are affiliated to other universities and not universities in their own right. Vellore Institute of Technology now known as VIT University is a deemed university. The similarity in the abbreviations used by all these institutes was one of the reasons why VIT a.k.a Vellore Institute of Technology was officially renamed VIT University. (I say this at the end because I cannot back this up with printed evidence. This is hearsay from the administrative section of VIT University).

I propose to move this article back to its original location after a period of two days to allow time for discussion.

Cheers..!!

  • After reading Manoj Prajwal's point of view and looking at the evidences he provided, I feel it was mistake to change the article's name from VIT University to Vellore Institute of Technology. Merging electronics engineering article to VIT page

[edit]

--Wikindinator (talk) 18:36, 25 November 2011 (UTC)*I feel that there is defiantly a need to maintain a separate article for this program of VIT,as it basically is a separate school with a robust academic and especially research program, which requires genuine emphasis which is yet to be articulated. Hence it is evident that there has to be a separate page for the electronics engineering school to fulfill the missing lot of information just as other schools of VIT are articulated. Wikindinator (talk) 18:36, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Going by guidelines for college articles, such breakaway articles are not recommended, unless there is a lot of coverage by non primary sources. Can you please show some secondary/teriary coverage of the particular program you speak about? Thanks, Lynch7 19:01, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Department of any institution and University is not entailed for a separate page until there is some extra ordinary circumstances and must be supported by circumstantial references. I guess you belong to this department thats why promoting it with vested interest. Wikipedia is not place for any such activity. you have created this page so let other to reach at consensus whether page to be entitled for separate identity or should be merged with VIT University. Don't remove nomination without any consensus as it is created by yourself you will not act impartially. Alokprasad84 (talk) 19:26, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see no reason at all for having a separate article. There is actually very little information there to merge, now that the substantial spam content has been removed. Also, if the article is kept then the current title School of electronics engineering is inadequate, so I will move it to VIT University school of electronics engineering pending decision on whether it should be kept at all. JamesBWatson (talk) 21:44, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

--Wikindinator (talk) 09:46, 26 November 2011 (UTC) it seems that you have not properly interpreted what has just been explained above,or you seem to have a personal issue with the article. It has been clearly been mentioned that there is some breakthrough research going on at the school involving some of the most respected academicians and scientists and needs further articulation, but this is being ignored and you have been pursuing for a merger without even discussing about it.This is really unethical. Wikindinator (talk) 09:46, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If any article is not satisfying the guidelines of wikipedia then its not unethical to remove it. And promoting any programme or any thing is not allowed in wikipedia. please use some other forum for this motive. Can you please provide some important secondary references of the so called breakthrough? Alokprasad84 (talk) 10:13, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"Pursuing for a merger without even discussing about it"?? So what is going on here if it's not discussing it?
"Breakthrough research . . . involving some of the most respected academicians and scientists" may well be considered grounds for including the material in Wikipedia, but the question at issue is not "should material on this be included?" but "should the material which is included be in the main article on the university or in a separate article?" and your comment does not address that question. JamesBWatson (talk) 20:05, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

--Wikindinator (talk) 14:04, 26 November 2011 (UTC)I dont understand how is the article not satisfying the guidelines of wikipedia, the article is nothing else but the projection of facts which have also been referred in the reference, and further articulation will also be tagged with viable source.Secondly, the article is not promotion of anything.Guess it is very obvious and contemptible that we articulate information just for the sake of it,if any one, whether its myself, you,or anyone else writes an article it sure must be regrading information on true facts, but there is no point in labeling each and every article as promotion of something,if that was the case then every article must be promotion of something. Wikindinator (talk) 14:04, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah thats why every one is here is saying you to go through guidelines for college articles, it will you idea about to create college articles. There is difference between informative article and promotion. Please provide some important secondary references regarding article and also give proper justification. Primary references are not enough. Thank you. Alokprasad84 (talk) 15:29, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wikindinator, nowhere in this discussion has anyone suggested merging because the article is promotional. I don't understand why you are at such pains to counter an argument which has not been advanced. JamesBWatson (talk) 20:05, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
result is Merge.

Merger proposal

[edit]

I propose that VIT University School of Computing Science and Engineering, VIT University school of electronics engineering and VIT University School of Information Technology & Engineering be merged into VIT University. I think that the content in the these articles can easily be explained in the context of VIT University, and the VIT University article is of a reasonable size in which the merging of these articles will not cause any problems as far as article size or undue weight is concerned. Alokprasad84 (talk) 16:22, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Opinion (s):

The discussion above is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

advice

[edit]

The general practice is to merge colleges of a university into the university until there is sufficient information for an article. When there is, it should first be added to that section of the main article, and then seen if there is enough. If the school is not a first-order division, but an academic department, then we do not have a separate article unless it is internationally famous, and can be proven so by excellent sources, which is the case for very very few departments. I am not sure of the exact status of these, but from their web pages, it appears to me that they are nearer departments.

I remind everyone that it is enormously better to have one good long strong well-supported university article than many small individual ones. I think you'll do better to merge: it will keep related information together, which will benefit the reader. DGG ( talk ) 16:57, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Yes in my point of view it would be nice move to expand the information about the university also people can get information regarding Vit in a single rather than viewing many pages. Akakshay (talk) 11:31, 2 December 2011 (UTC)Akakshay[reply]

And two sections above would have been the place to make that comment. --Muhandes (talk) 21:48, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Gender Discrimination

[edit]

I'm not sure what the importance in including a section on gender discrimination is? Hell In A Bucket (talk) 14:08, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Speaking of gender, there are several locations in the article where female students are referred to as "girl/s" rather than female students or women, none where "boy/s" is used. An example (the most obvious difference in treatment) being a discussionthe lists of "men's hostels" versus "girls[sic] hostels." Should the article consistently refer to students when using gender-specific terms? I realize there may be cultural issues in play here. Dwpaul Talk 17:22, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article on Gender Discrimination was deleted on the grounds that it is defamatory (Vikgela, on 16 October 2014‎). Please note that deleting is not the correct response. Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle says "Consider reverting only when necessary. ... When reverting, be specific about your reasons in the edit summary and use links if needed. Look at the article's edit history and its talk page to see if a discussion has begun. If not, you may begin one ... ". In this case, no discussion was started, neither was there any attempt to improve the section (i.e. by giving the opposite viewpoint). Blanket deletion of a section amounts to suppression of dissenting opinions. Please explain the rationale behind this action. Jose Mathew C (talk) 09:53, 18 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That said, the section seems to be biased against VIT University. "VIT University has much more restrictive “hostel rules” for female students ... " is an opinion, not a fact. "Opponents of gender inequity regard this as ... gender discrimination at VIT, while VIT officials claim ... " seems to imply that VIT officials are supporters of gender inequity, and that what they are saying is a 'claim'. I have restored this section, but with what I hope is a more neutral point of view. Jose Mathew C (talk) 04:37, 19 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that Wikipedia articles should not use loaded words (words which imply a certain meaning without explicitly stating it, such as 'claim' which implies that the following statement is probably false). Also, opinions should not be confused with facts. Thank You. Jose Mathew C (talk) 07:29, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A part of this section was deleted without giving any reason. I reverted this because this issue is controversial and the deletion seemed to me slightly one-sided. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thank You. Jose Mathew (talk) (talk) 16:25, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Indian numbering system

[edit]

In his edit on 4 February 2016, Arpingstone pointed out that this page uses the Indian numbering system, which people from the rest of the world may not understand. ("Because I live in England I have no idea whatever what 1,93,000 means. This number would be best in a number system that the whole world understands. Is it 193 thousand (193,000) or is it one million and 93 thousand (1,093,000)?") 1,93,000 is 193,000 - one hundred and ninety-three thousand. I have added this. Thank you for the rather painstaking edit and for pointing this out. (I do take exception to "a number system that the whole world understands" though. Most readers of this page will be Indians.) Jose Mathew (talk) 10:01, 6 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/India-related articles#Basic India conventions: "You may use the Indian numbering system of lakhs and crores but should give their equivalents in millions/billions in parentheses. Gender discrimination section

[edit]

A section about gender discrimination was added by Quicksnip in October 2013. Over the years, the neutrality of this section was disputed over and over and it was tagged for POV from 2014. In its latest incarnation, it was removed by Anthoniraj in September 2019, claiming that It's irrelevant to VIT. Ever since, some anonymous IPs are restoring it. I agree that some of the material does not deal with VIT, but some definitely does. The rest may seem like giving undue weight to an old local issue, or it might be a big controversy, I don't know. What I do know, is that rather than edit warring, editors should discuss and arrive at consensus. --Muhandes (talk) 14:31, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Repeated Vandalism

[edit]

There seems to be repeated vandalism every few days. Content critical such as student suicides are removed. While promotional material is added. Prat3105 (talk) 05:28, 18 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Bilby: Appropriately cited content is being flagged as uncited. Content posted under controversies is from respectable news sites both Indian and global. These include the likes of The Hindu 3 (under student suicides), International Business Times 4(under gender discrimination), India Today 5(PUBG ban). I take this to be an error in judgment. Would like users to look at the journals cited (which are among the elite news organisations of India) before flagging content as an unreliable source. Prat3105 (talk) 10:49, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The International Business Times is considered to be unreliable - it is covered on WP:RSP. India Resists [6] is a collection of self-published pieces - in this case [7] is an anonymous self-published work, so it has to be regarded as unreliable. Similarly, Youth Ki Awaaz is also anonymous and effectively self published. I don't know the status of Moneycontrol, although I would be inclined to question its reliablity - however, banning PUBG doesn't seem to be particularly significant, so while it is potentially reliable, it does seem undue.
Claims such as allegations that they were covering up student suicides cannot be sourced to anonymous self-published articles, and the claim that they "formatted the mobile phone" of an alleged student suicide is not properly supported by the source [8]
When we remove those we end up with a shorter controversy section, but then it is all properly sourced to reliable sources. - Bilby (talk) 11:21, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

VIT ranked top private institution for Engineering and Technology in India

[edit]

Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) is number one private institution in India for Engineering and Technology as per the QS subject ranking, 2020. The university was ranked among the top 450 universities in the world by the QS World University Rankings, an annual publication of university rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Limited, United Kingdom. https://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/chennai/vit-ranked-top-private-institution-for-engg-and-technology-in-india/article31017384.ece Ctsinfrateam (talk) 04:22, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. While there is a reliable source that QRS released those ratings, there is no indication that QRS World University Ratings are considered reliable by the international secondary education community. • Information to be removed:

Gender discrimination Gender discrimination has been a common issue raised in universities across India.[30] VIT allegedly use their restrictive rules and regressive practices to market to conservative parents of Southern India, particularly in their home state of Tamil Nadu and neighboring Andhra Pradesh. These practices include much more restrictive rules on women hostelers, moral policing, shaming by an all-round security force and special committees to look into moral paternalism.[31] The Hindu reported that often women would find themselves checked at hostel rooms and asked to stop talking on mobile phones and sleep or study. Over time, videos and articles have emerged online about the same. VIT officials, however, maintain that stricter female hostel rules are a necessary safety precaution given the rise in crimes against women.[32] VIT officials have stated that, while they agree that men and women must be treated equally, they have at times been faced by irate parents who have insisted on stricter codes of conduct.[31] VIT despite calling itself a progressive educational institution committed to excellence, still ensures strict gender segregation at official events and fests.[31]

In October 2013, two female students were suspended after they helped to organize an online opinion survey of female VIT students, focusing on issues of safety and inequality.[33] Commenting on the issue, VIT vice president Sekar Viswanathan said: "The students started a campaign based on the misplaced notion that the university discriminates against women, which is not true. They were taken home by their parents".[33]

In 2019, Indian news outlet The Print carried a story which alleged that the government was delaying according the Institute of Eminence status to VIT due to an alleged anti-Modi government stance by its Chancellor and an official Intelligence Bureau report alleging gender discrimination of students.[34]

Lack of freedom of speech VIT allegedly makes students sign an affidavit which prohibits them from speaking out against university management.[31] The university code of conduct prohibits any form of protest or action within premises or outside which may spoil repute of the institute and prohibits passing out information to any media group without prior permission of university officials.[35] In 2015, Indian stand-up comedian Papa CJ was banned from the campus for taking up issues related to gender discrimination and moral policing during his show at GraVITas. He put up a video about his ban on his Facebook page and tweeted about the same[36] describing his ban and a video recording of his show. Amuthukumar1988 (talk) 15:44, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Student Life

[edit]

If I understand correctly, the VIT campuses include hostels. This means that many students live on campus. I think a section on Student Life is important here. 49.37.8.145 (talk) 07:40, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
