Dart Transit Company is an American trucking company headquartered in Eagan, Minnesota, with operating centers in Dallas, Texas, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, as well as service centers in Atlanta, Georgia, and Louisville, Kentucky. It is the 29th largest truckload carrier in America.
History
[edit]In 1934, entrepreneur Earl Oren founded Dart Transit Company in his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota. Unable to purchase company trucks, Oren worked with owner operators to haul canned food throughout the Midwest. At the time, the use of independent contractors in the trucking industry was a novel idea. By 1938, Dart Transit Company was incorporated[1].
Since its inception, the company has remained a family-owned and operated business. In 1977, Earl Oren’s son, Donald Oren[2], was named the company’s president. Donald’s wife, Beverly, soon became the company’s executive vice president. In 2005, Donald became chairman of the board and named his son David Oren as his successor. Other family members involved in company leadership are David’s two brothers: Dan Oren (Vice President) and Brad Oren (President of Dart Portable Storage).
Innovation
[edit]Dart Transit Company is credited with the idea of working with owner operators and the invention of the 53’ high-cube trailer[3] — both of which are current industry standards. The company recently announced its Eco Fleet™[4], which includes a light-weight Eco Trailer™ and Eco Tractor™ to increase weight-carrying capacity by 15% — requiring fewer trucks to complete deliveries. This, combined with the fleet’s use of compressed natural gas (CNG), means fewer CO2 emissions.
Since 1977, Dart Transit Company has expanded to include a range of transportation services, creating the Dart Network of independent companies, including Dart Transit Company[5] and the following:
• Dartco, Inc.[6] – provides job opportunities and benefits for fleet drivers.
• Dart Express, Inc.[7] – operates using a relay system that allows fleet drivers the option to get home daily.
• Dart Advantage Logistics, Inc.[8] – offers a full range of logistics and brokerage services.
• Dart Intermodal, Inc.[9] – provides both truck and rail intermodal freight transport service through much of the United States.
• Dart Advantage Warehousing, Inc.[10] – supplies more than one million square feet of food-grade warehouse space in Minnesota, Georgia, and Michigan.
• Dart Portable Storage, Inc.[11] – offers temporary on-site storage units on a monthly rental basis.
• Highway Sales, Inc.[12] – leases new and used trucks and offers financing programs.
• Safety Lane, Inc.[13] – offers a full range of truck and trailer maintenance services
• Advantage Management Corporation[14] – provides businesses with management and administration consulting services.
• Pro Stop Truck Service, Inc. – fuel and convenience items for purchase.
