Welcome back

Hey, you probably don't remember me, but I encountered a lot of your work while going through a project to make New York Times links freely accessible in March and April 2008. Naturally I encountered a lot of your NY Giants articles, your MJ article, plus many other interesting pages. When I got to the Jim Thorpe article, it was frankly a total mess; I had to perform a fairly major rescue operation on it, and it's been on my watchlist ever since! Despite my general lack of interest in sports, partially because of my blindness (see my user page), I find his life story fascinating and tragic. With people like that I like to ask "what ifs" ... what if his brother hadn't died when he was so young? What if he had been born at a time when his race wasn't such an issue, or after the IOC allowed professionals to compete? I look forward to reading more of your work in the future.

I haven't gotten the book yet, but just as a general comment, I'm concerned that some of the phrases in the article may be copied (or only superficially paraphrased) from other sources. For example, the description of his mother as "charmingly flamboyant but narcissistic" is almost identical to the description here. This particular phrase was in the Wiki article before you started working on it, so I'm not blaming you for anything, but it is an issue that needs to be addressed. I haven't looked for other offending phrases, but I expect that they're out there. When there's smoke, there's fire. Zagalejo^^^ 06:47, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately, there's only one copy of Ken and Thelma in the entire Chicago Public Library system, and someone else already has it on hold, so it might take me a while to get my hands on the book. In case you're wondering, I've started reading Ignatius Rising. I'd like to finish it before doing any substantial editing work, so that I can develop some big picture ideas of what should be in the article. Unfortunately, I'm finding a few other phrases that are too close to the source material ("formed her own troupe of players...of all ages and talents", "one man show of comic impressions"). Got your email. Thanks. To be honest, I am a little hesitant to move forward with this, but not because of anything you did. I'm mainly concerned that it would be difficult to defend Ignatius Rising as a reliable source if we ever got to a featured article discussion. There seems to be too much controversy over the book, and I don't see any easy way out (besides waiting for a new biography to come out). But in addition to that, I just haven't had the time or energy to really dive into the article. Every time I log in, I find all kinds of other things to clean up on my watchlist, and by the time I'm done with that, I'm wiki-bonked.

History of the New York Giants

Hi, I'm glad to see that you've taken the time to fix what was generally a good article. The main problems seem to have been:

1. Lack of references
2. Dead links
3. Undue weight
4. A presentist slant

Thank you quadzilla99 for your welcome. I have made an edit in the first paragraph of the River Teifi article which I hope is OK.
I feel sure that the rainfall statistics at the end of the first paragraph are wrong but do not know where the information came from as there is no reference. Re: The New York Times

To make the New York Times links accessible, I manipulated the URLs - I can't remember the exact procedure now! However it's not necessary anymore. In September 2007, the New York Times made all articles since 1987 freely available and IIRC abolished the Times Select system. However, links that pointed to the Times Select versions of articles didn't redirect to the free versions, so I corrected the links manually in March and April 2008. Those Times Select links, such as [this one, now redirect readers to the free version of an article if it's available, or a preview otherwise. Graham87 04:06, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

I do have access to that book, as well as the Sporting News archives, which I'm sure will have a lot of information. I could also look around and see if there are any that look at his military service as well. As for Paige, I don't have any of the books currently, though T could get them. Sounds good. I like what he's doing on Paige, though it does seem to be getting too long (64kb would be pushing it for any baseball player). We could do Boudreau or Doby after Feller; Doby might be easier since he does have a bio written on him, so ideally not as much grunt work would be needed searching for sources. I admittedly probably won't be able to start working on Feller until after thanksgiving, due to rl commitments as well as just keeping up to date on the things I manage around here (GA revs, featured topics, etc.) Wizardman _{Operation Big Bear} 03:12, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
