thank you[edit]

My RfA
Thank you very much for your support in my RfA which I really appreciate. It closed at 83/0/0. I was surprised by the unanimity and will do my best to live up to the new role. All the best, --ROGER DAVIES talk 16:49, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article templates[edit]

I added them, because the article needed cleanup etc. Guess I should have used {{articleissues}} instead, but I forgot to tick that box with the Friendly js I was using. Thanks, --Solumeiras (talk) 18:36, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thank you for the explanation. It's just that when I went to view the article, I couldn't see it because of the templates. :) I do agree the article needs some work, and a template or two should help. Acalamari 18:40, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Just converted it now. --Solumeiras (talk) 18:40, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thank you. I apologize if I came across as aggressive at all: that wasn't my intention if there was any. Acalamari 18:42, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, no, it wasn't aggressive: it was constructive criticism. Anyway, what articles you editing?? Any that you could take to article creation & improvement drive with me?? Thanks, --Solumeiras (talk) 18:43, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's a relief, thank you. :) Well, I'm not working on any particular articles (I mainly edit what interests me), but I suppose that while we're on the topic, the Rihanna article might be a good one to take there, as I have it on my watchlist and edit it a lot. Acalamari 18:48, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll be happy to work with you on Rihanna! Let's discuss it more at the talk page. --Solumeiras (talk) 19:21, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback templates[edit]

I saw that, only I didn't know that they were templates. Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 19:30, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, but for the record, User:Acalamari/Rollback was just moved to {{Rollbackgiven}} to make it more accessible to everyone, rather than just keeping it in my userspace. Acalamari 19:32, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nice. :) Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 19:35, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, useful wording! Thanks. Saved me the trouble of working something out. My initial reaction to giving out rollback was a bit negative, but I now support it as a useful tool for trusted users to make life a bit easier for them. I also think it is a good moral boost for editors who for whatever reason may not become admins, but have nevertheless achieved a good status. Tyrenius (talk) 20:45, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome! Yes, you're right about there being some users who aren't able to become admins for various reasons but would benefit from having rollback: in the rollback proposal, one of the common reasons for opposition was that anyone who was trusted with rollback could be trusted with all the tools. In reality, there have been many users who have run through RfA who clearly know how to use rollback correctly, but are often opposed for either not enough article-writing experience or lack of knowledge of the deletion and/or blocking policies. Acalamari 21:22, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And also experienced users who don't want to become admins, preferring to remain as content editors, but as a matter of course revert vandalism. Tyrenius (talk) 21:31, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. :) Acalamari 21:34, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reverting. Just discovered this morning (in Philippine time). Whom do you think holds a deep grunge against me? It was a very long "fuck you". --BritandBeyonce (talk) 01:33, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome for the revert. :) It was probably someone who you might have reverted before, or someone who just came across your talk page and decided to vandalize it. Acalamari 02:38, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just hope it was a random vandalism. I don't like having enemies here. --BritandBeyonce (talk) 10:14, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reply from T-borg[edit]

Thanks for the feature, but I'd prefer not having it, I really don't need a faster method for reverting, plus I might screw up, I'll have it anyway, if I make admin someday, but it's really unnecessary now. Thanks again. —T-borg (T | C) 15:54, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback removed. Good luck. Acalamari 17:02, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image removal[edit]

I removed it because it was poor quality... until someone can find a good one. --Solumeiras (talk) 19:36, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the quality isn't relevant: the image is free, and since is free, it's best that we make use of it. After all, this is a free encyclopedia, and free images contribute to that. Acalamari 19:40, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

re:RFA/2[edit]

Done. :) You're welcome. Acalamari 21:15, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whats the secret?[edit]

So, I see you've deleted lots of pages from TEMP very quickly. Like I said in my RfA, I'd like to work on that, so how are you doing it so quickly? Is there a tool that I'm missing? Must be... - Rjd0060 (talk) 00:02, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I open multiple CAT:TEMP pages using tabs in my browser, spend some time reviewing all the pages I've opened; then with the pages that should be deleted, I go into the delete screen in all the tabs I've opened, set the reason for deletion in each tab, and when it's all done, go into all my open tabs and press the "delete page" button. It might look as though I'm using a script (or a bot) and deleting pages rapidly, but in reality, it's just tabbed browsing. Acalamari 00:07, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I've done that before, elsewhere. I thought somebody created some sort of tool for this though. One that gives you a list of possible pages ready for deletion, based on their last edit date and pages that do not mention "sock". Guess I'll have to talk to MzMcbride. Thanks. - Rjd0060 (talk) 00:10, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome, and if you ever do come across a tool for aiding in deleting pages in that category, please let me know. Acalamari 00:12, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. I will catch MzM on IRC when I see him, because I know I've asked him before, but it was during the time that the toolserver was down, so no tools worked. - Rjd0060 (talk) 00:13, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Acalamari 00:21, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[1] Here is a list, that gets automatically updated weekly. Remember, a lot of those pages deal with sockpuppetry, and those are not to be deleted (I know you know that, but just covering). The pages on that list have not been edited in at least 30 days. - Rjd0060 (talk) 01:42, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the link! Acalamari 02:38, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback[edit]

That might be very helpful. How can I get it? Asarelah (talk) 23:52, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, three ways: request it at Wikipedia:Requests for rollback, ask anyone in Category:Wikipedia administrators willing to grant rollback requests, or finally, I can grant you it right now, as I am an administrator, and can grant it. Acalamari 23:56, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great if you would grant it to me. Thank you very much. Asarelah (talk) 23:56, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rats, e/c'd on closing Dendodge. I just can't seem to type fast enough. I suppose I need to limber up my digits if I plan on ever blocking someone at AIV before someone else does; can't keep up with this fast, younger crowd. --barneca (talk) 23:39, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

POV?[edit]

Hi Acalamari, I noticed that you've recently removed the phrase "Grammy award-winning" from several articles, saying in your edit summaries that it's POV. It seems to me that this is a simple statement of fact: either an artist/song has won such an award or it hasn't, and an individual's personal opinion does not change this. Is there a consensus somewhere, relating to the Music WikiProject, perhaps, that including this information outside of a separate "Awards" section is inordinate praise? --Icarus (Hi!) 05:30, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Icarus3, the best explanation I've seen for the reason to not include "Grammy-award winning", or any other type of award mention in the opening sentence was by Spellcast, said here. I hope that helps. Acalamari 20:02, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you![edit]

I just wanted to write you a quick note thanking you for the barnstar -- It was a lovely surprise to find on my talkpage and brightened up my day considerably. :) Thanks again, Kafka Liz (talk) 14:04, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gwen Stefani[edit]

There is a sock puppet changing Gwen Stefani's genre. There was a discussion about the genres weeks ago and the person changes the genres. Charmed36 (talk) 17:20, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Anniversary[edit]

Yes, today's my four-year wiki-anniversary. Thanks for noticing that. Do I want to run for RfA again? Absolutely, but I feel I don't stand a chance as long as there are still arbitration restrictions on me. Right now I've got an appeal that the ArbCom says it is reviewing; if you'd like to put in a word for me, that'd mean a lot. Everyking (talk) 02:54, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. :) I'll be glad when you do get to run at RfA again once your sanctions are lifted; I think you'd make a great admin again. Acalamari 03:50, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the word on RfAr. Greatly appreciated. Everyking (talk) 17:54, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome: I would have been disappointed if ArbCom hadn't done the appeal in the open, otherwise I may not have been able to write that. I was hoping to say something for you, and I'm glad I got the chance. Acalamari 17:57, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you placing last warnings on this user's talk page for vandalism? I don't see any vandalism, and I worry such a heavy-handed response will only drive people away. The Evil Spartan (talk) 03:37, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This person is an IP sock of someone who keeps adding unsouced information to BLP articles such as Amanda Michalka and Alyson Michalka (saying they're of German descent but not sourcing it), and to other articles. This person has used a variety of IPs to add unnecessary categories to articles. Several users, including myself, have attempted to contact this person before when they've used their other IPs (and with hand-written messages too, explaining the situation), but we've received no response at all. Acalamari 18:37, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, this explains much better, thanks. Yeah, I've discovered quite often someone is just clueless electronically. Just, for example, take a look at the contribs of User:76.212.156.118 and my exhaustive attempts to get in contact with him/her. I just think some people are awful with computers; we may be dealing with someone like this here. Or, the person may just not give a rip. The Evil Spartan (talk) 18:12, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the understanding. I (along with other users) assumed good faith with the person to begin with (after all, they appeared to be a new person at the time, and might have just been unfamiliar), but I found it harder to do so when they ignored messages, and started switching IPs to continue their edits after one of their IPs had been blocked. :( Acalamari 18:17, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RFA Card[edit]

Hey Acalamari, could you review your protection here. The only IP vandalizing in the last day or so has been blocked. I think the protection here is unwarranted. If the IP comes back than we can always block for a longer duration. Right now I think the only thing we are doing is stopping others from editing. That said, I will respect your decision and will not unprotect, I would rather you just unprotected it. Feel free to prod me if you have a questions. Thanks! – Gonzo fan2007 talkcontribs 03:11, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at the few days before the recent incident, and decided that some protection was warranted. I will shorten my protection to five days. Is that acceptable to you? Acalamari 03:14, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah that sounds good to me. Thanks for the quick response. I was glad to see you edit WP:RFPP, it seemed like I was the only admin watching the page. There was upwards of like 10 total requests at one point!! The most I had seen since I started watching the page :P – Gonzo fan2007 talkcontribs 03:17, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome for rollback. :) I came across you while looking at Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of edits. I saw your name there, had a look through some of your contributions, and decided you would benefit from having the rollback feature. Acalamari 23:00, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

No. Back when I was an admin the tool I wanted was undo. I've got that now and I'm very happy with it.Geni 19:53, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's fine then. I felt it was better to ask you than to just grant it. Acalamari 19:56, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the rollback! :-)[edit]

Hi, Acalamari! Thank you for the confidence you've shown in me by giving me rollback. I've stripped down my watchlist rather drastically recently, but I'll start building it up again so I can catch more vandalism, and I'll also try to spend some time on RCP as well. I pledge to be extremely careful with the rollback function to avoid accidentally reverting good-faith edits. Thanks again. --Tkynerd (talk) 20:26, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's excellent, and you're welcome. :) Good luck. Acalamari 20:27, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
However, as shown in this diff, Tkynerd has used Rollback in edit warring. Just an FYI. - ALLSTAR echo 05:24, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the notification. I'll ask Tkynerd on his talk page for an explanation. That's not how rollback should be used. Acalamari 16:23, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I used rollback there primarily because I agreed with this assessment that Allstarecho's edits do constitute vandalism. I feel that continuing to delete someone else's talk page comments, after being politely asked not to do so, is vandalism. --Tkynerd (talk) 22:21, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
However, having had time to reflect further on the situation, I realize it is simply a bad idea to use rollback when you're involved in a dispute. I'll keep that firmly in mind from now on. --Tkynerd (talk) 04:13, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, as long as you plan to be more careful with rollback, and remember not to use it when in a dispute, you'll be fine. Acalamari 16:31, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your confidence. As I say, I'll keep in mind never to use rollback to edit in a dispute. (I was actually doing a little RCP last night, and I was even careful not to use it on edits I wasn't involved in that looked like possible content disputes rather than vandalism.) Best regards, Tkynerd (talk) 19:11, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's good to know. Thanks. Acalamari 19:13, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I want to add, thanks for offering it to me, but I am uncertain how "rollback" is supposed to work. My usual procedure is, look at diff, undo, add edit summary explaining my reversion, submit, view history, go to vandal's talk page, add warning. It is time consuming. I tried it with Popups, which is a bit faster but I didn't like its edit summaries. What parts of the above process would become more efficient? -Amatulić (talk) 22:30, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Get well soon![edit]

Sorry to hear that you are unwell. If I were good at such things, I would make a little card for you! Kafka Liz (talk) 00:06, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Kafka Liz, for the kind message. :) My family and have this terrible cold at the moment :( Thanks for the wishes, they mean a lot. :) Acalamari 00:10, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback for User:Geologyguy?[edit]

Hey, I noticed this editor was doing quite a bit of vandalism reverts and I checked his contributions and found that he has made well over 1000 reverts in the last 3 weeks. While he does seem to sometimes neglect to warn the user who vandalised the page, I think rollback would be very useful for him and would benefit Wikipedia by increasing his already insane rate of vandalism reversion. Regards. Thingg 03:59, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whoa, I just noticed ^^ that you are not feeling well. Sorry to hear that and hope you feel better soon. So yeah, no hurry on the above request, just get better first. :) Thingg 04:04, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that user does do a lot of reverting of vandalism. Thanks for the suggestion. Thanks also for the good wishes and the smile. :) Acalamari 17:18, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
