Horse articles

I have just seen that you reversed some articles I proposed for deletion and said you think they are notable. Can you explain to me how they meet with the General notability guideline? They do not have multiple sources that give significant coverage of them. You seem to be experienced. 90.255.15.2 (talk) 12:57, 20 December 2022 (UTC)

I also invited you to sign-up for my class at WP:NPPSCHOOL. Notability is much more nuanced than what you seem to think it is. You should also register an account, and get involved in WikiProject Equine if horses are of interest to you.

I was looking at some horses in Category:Cutting horses and realised these ones did not meet Wikipedia's standards. And after looking for sources to improve them and realising there were none I thought I would follow Wikipedia's policies.

So are you saying that if I successfully complete the New pages patrol/School I will learn that articles do not need to meet the significant coverage aspects of the General notability guideline? No, that's not what I'm saying. What I am saying is that you have a very limited understanding of our guidelines and policies. You targeted and prodded 6 notable horse articles and then prodded the NCHA articles because you obviously have no clue about GNG, or N. I do hope Wikipedia will soon put an end to IP editing. It would save so many resources that are already overtaxed because of the time sinks they create. Still, to this day, not one statistic has been provided that indicates IP editing is a positive in WP's cost vs benefit program. Request for photo review

Hello, Atsme. I wonder if you get some time if you could review a photo that I have just uploaded onto Commons: File:Buchstaprop1936.jpg. It is, as far as I can tell, an un-attributed photo made anonymously in 1936, but published more recently in an online newsletter of the Nashville Historical Association. Frankly, the copyright rules and licensing now a days just leave me dumbfounded. If you could check it out for me and tweak if necessary, I would be most appreciative. Top of the morning to you, GenQuest!! From my perspective, you covered all the bases - good job!! The image is actually a public domain image per Stanford's interpretation of US Copyright Law. The Tennessee SOS clearly states the following in Use of Library & Archives Materials: While the Library & Archives houses an item, it does not necessarily hold the copyright on the item, nor may it be able to determine if the item is still protected under current copyright law. Users are solely responsible for determining the existence of such instances and for obtaining any other permissions and paying associated fees, that may be necessary for the intended use. While the library's full collection is copyrighted, and they would like to get credit/attribution for housing public domain images, WP is not under the same "moral obligations" as the TN historians as stewards of historic documents/images. Their restrictions on individual pieces of non-copyrighted material is unenforceable, especially a single photo that is 86 years old by an unknown author. Only the entire collection and manner of presentation is copyrighted (for example, a complete book or chapter), but I don't see any issues in using the CC-BY-SA 4.0 license to attribute the TN Library as a courtesy–as what you did. It wasn't that long ago that I was forced through [the rigors] in order to save a public domain image from deletion. Probably more info than you wanted, but hth. Thank you, Randy. The urge to "school" comes naturally. I've been spending less time doing as I spend teaching, but then, I truly enjoy helping others. Oh, and before I forget, I wanted to mention that this article in People is not about the same dog that played in Silence of the Lambs, but it does add to the notability of "Precious", the role in which Darla was originally cast. Maybe someone with more free time than I have these days will add a paragraph about that CBS TV sequel and significance of the role so many years later. The film did have a cultural impact as demonstrated by the Vox article which states: The sheer cultural dominance of Silence of the Lambs over the years is hard to quantify; at this point, it’s likely that every major scene from the film is recognizable to many Americans, even if they’ve never seen it, .... — from the fava beans to the lotion in the basket to Precious the dog. BusterD, about the sun...I must admit that it is difficult to pass-up a day at Jibe City where the only splash screening is done on a surf board with a sail. They are also known for their island-style, wooden porch restaurant where they serve the best BBQ sauce on Bonaire. Think baby back ribs and enjoying them while sitting at a table on their covered porch, looking out at the windsurfers and blue, blue Caribbean. To top it all off, in the middle of the table is a bucket of iced down Amstel Bright to share with island friends. (Just explaining why my reply is a day late) I think it's wonderful that you have been tasked with the splash screen effort, but I'll come clean...trying to suppress what I will likely contribute to where you are concerned is like me saying no to a day at Jibe City! I look forward to watching the master at work...and I will ~~promise to do my best~~ try not to annoy, but that's as far as I'll go.

Thanks/my health/5 yrs ago

Just wanted to thank for your, assumed to be sincere, concern about my health. Thankfully, I have a clean bill of health, am entirely off medication except for coffee, pot, and probiotics, no panic attacks or bad trips for years, and have even managed to avoid getting COVID-19. After some ill-advised and stupid mistakes and a spot of temporary insanity 5 years ago (User:Andrevan/2018 for my statement) which led to me to resign as an admin/bureaucrat, and some blocks/bans, I currently am free of sanctions and have made 10,000 edits in the past 9 months, many in controversial topic areas. I apologize for anything from 5 years ago that may have upset you or the community at large. I definitely overstepped several bounds. Andre🚐 18:54, 12 February 2023 (UTC)

Thanks. I applaud your empathy and humanity. That is something that is missing in a lot of online communities (and offline ones...) We can disagree on politics or policy but greater shared understanding, civility, and respect can help. I also empathize with the sufferers of "Biden derangement syndrome"[2] who are getting a little taste of the feelings I felt in 2018 (though maybe different). Not to pick a fight but in the pursuit of further empathy. As the descendant of Eastern European Jews, I grew up with stories of my great-grandparents fleeing the Odessa pogroms and Kishinev pogrom on all sides of my family. We came to New York City and saw the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and I still reside in NYC as do 4 generations of my family, so the American story is personal for me. When antisemites were in power in Washington, or the January 6 attack, or the Ukraine invasion, these are all very triggering and personal for me. The events of 2016-2018 including the undeniable Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections, unlocked some kind of generational trauma (plus, some issues in my personal life and career at the time which thankfully are over with). But of course, one needs emotional distance and impartiality to edit Wikipedia, something that I lacked in 2018, but I have now. I hope folks writing and editing in 2023 can get that same distance and impartiality whether it is about the Durham investigation or the Steele dossier. Opinion on Suicide of Adriana Kuch

Hello, I came across this in NPP and I wanted to get your opinions about this article. Suicide of a minor which is WP:MILL. Perhaps WP:NOTNEWS. Hi, Bruxton - I'm not seeing anything beyond what you mentioned. For example Suicide of Audrie Pott resulted in a law being passed. Unless you see anything else, or maybe a list of suicides for that reason, or something besides MILL...which is sad in itself, but not enough for inclusion. @BD2412 and Tryptofish: I am uncertain about it. What Atsme has alluded to is an observed phenomena as well. There are articles about it and even a term "suicide contagion". I think these kinds of suicides happen often and when spotlighted they may trigger contagion. I do not think that is a policy reason for us to exclude but I think the lasting impact of one teen's suicide is our concern for the encyclopedia. Bruxton (talk) 01:04, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

This is SO simple, yet SO important. I am glad that you pointed this out, I will add it to my list of the sorts of things that I regularly correct for. It makes so much sense though, that "Recently John Smith did XYZ, etc. etc." does no one any favors, but something like "In February 2023 John Smith did XYZ, etc. etc." helps to know specifically what when the event in question is being referred to and holds constant over time. Keys instead of clicks

Are there hotkeys on the New Pages feed with the NPP perm that I can click to move from one page to the next until I decide to review one or to otherwise add tags or anything? I do a lot of vandalism patrolling where I just use keys on my keyboard and only click once in a while... This is just how I prefer to work from an ergonomics standpoint, not really anything from a speed standpoint, since I still would like to take my time and go slow no matter which way that I am patrolling new pages now. Moops, the NPP queue works differently, so you will have to keep that tab open on your browser, and open a new tab on your browser for the page you're reviewing. You can use the filter to just review or exclude certain pages, for example, exclude redirects, include only copyvio issues, or articles that are orphans, etc. Start at the back of the queue (oldest first) and do not attempt to review an article younger than at least 3 to 5 days because creators may still be working on those articles. You are not alone in your grief, Atsme. I find it's far easier to let wikipedians go when I did not meet them or know them personally. But for David, with whom I'd shared a number of in-person discussions and with whom I'd broken bread on more than on occasion, the loss is more personal. On Wikipedia where we try vainly to keep our personalities out of the work, some personalities do shine through. I feel DGG's loss personally, acutely and measurably. Thank you, Maxna Carter. Your words bring comfort. David was not only an asset to Wikipedia, he was a kind and caring human being. With the latter in mind, we should never allow our anonymity to convert us into inhuman-like algorithms as we have occasionally witnessed at the dramah boards. When speaking of humanity and dedication, I think of David's willingness to help new editors, his dedication to reviewing new articles, his outstanding work as a member of ArbCom, and above all, his love and devotion to his family. I have seen some of those same qualities in you as well, MC, despite our limited interactions.

I have thought long and hard about the pros and cons of online interactions and the dehumanizing effects of anonymity vs. actually meeting people at our WikiCons, or through online interactions such as zoom meetings where people can visually interact and respond to body language and human facial expressions. It is a difficult task to manage anonymity and behavior in a volunteer community that expects everyone to AGF, but often responds quite the opposite, especially when epistemological differences are at issue. David helped make it bearable because he was a good listener, and was able to leave his biases at login while still maintaining high standards for the encyclopedia. He never discounted humanity, or lost sight of his own. I feel honored to have known DGG, and feel the same about you MaxnaCarta. In fact, I feel honored and humbled by each one of the heartfelt comments made above and that were sent privately, all from exceptional editors who are exceptional human beings. Updates:

Charter Ratification Methodology proposal conversations: The Movement Charter Drafting Committee recently held the first conversations regarding the ratification methodology for the Movement Charter. The MCDC has received valuable feedback from different communities and the Committees during the community input period. The report of the community input will be shared in May, while the updated version of the ratification methodology will be presented between September and November 2023.
Communication evaluation: The Communications sub-committee of the MCDC together with the support staff conducted an evaluation of the communications. The Communications sub-committee appreciates the time and input of the community members who shared their opinions during the interviews. Several recommendations are going to be implemented in the upcoming period based on the valuable input.
Learn about the MCDC’s work in April: The MCDC continues to draft additional chapters: The Global Council, Hubs, Decision-making and Roles & Responsibilities. Alongside the drafting work, the MCDC is planning their in-person meeting scheduled for 2-4 June in Utrecht, Netherlands with the aim of advancing the charter's content.

Participants of the WikiNusantara 2023 in Banjarmasin, Indonesia are invited to join a session on the topics around Wikimedia Movement Strategy and community collaboration on May 20. Ramzy Muliawan will provide updates, share about the Movement Charter Ambassadors Program and answer the questions.
