England Saxons

Hi, I do not think it is a good precedent to add a single sport team specific template to the generic flag template system. I think it opens the door for all sorts of cruft — for example, somebody once created a template for the "flag" of The Un-Americans wrestling team! Is there a specific problem you are trying to solve with that, or are you just looking to use {{ru}} as much as possible for "cleaner" wikicode? Thanks, Andrwsc (talk) 16:51, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Followup: at an absolute minimum, we should not use a non-standard country code abbreviation such as "SAX". It is terribly confusing to use invented codes instead of the standard ISO, IOC and FIFA codes, as per guidance on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Flag Template home page. Andrwsc (talk) 16:55, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Either we create the England Saxons country template, or we need to create three different templates for said team so that compatibility is seen through {{ru}}, {{ru-big}} and {{ru-rt}}. I think that creating one template to use with three is less cruftlike than creating three different templates. It also lends itself to being cleaner and more uniform.
Alternatively, we create three new templates, {{ruA}}, {{ruA-big}} and {{ruA-rt}}, for the A teams with alternate ids for the England A (now the Saxons), New Zealand A (Junior All Blacks) and South Africa A (Emerging Springboks). If you could put that in place, it could invalidate the necessity of the country data template specific for each user set. --Bob (talk) 17:14, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
I think I like the latter approach best. It is similar to something I did for the football templates, where I created {{fbu}} for the various under-xx teams. It used an additional parameter to identify the alternate team—in this case, using the age as a selector (e.g. "20", "21", "17" etc. as appropriate). I will see what I can do to add a selector for the secondary teams. Thanks for the feedback, Andrwsc (talk) 17:25, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Follow-up-question: How many of these "A" teams are there? I only see articles for Australia, New Zealand and England, and you've mentioned a South Africa team (article still redlinked, I guess), but are there potentially others? Thanks, Andrwsc (talk) 19:04, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Ten teams: Scotland A, Ireland A, England Saxons, Wales A, France A, Italy A, Emerging Springboks, Argentina A, Junior All Blacks and Australia A are the ones that play most often, but, in theory, every playing country could have an 'A' side. --Bob (talk) 19:36, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. I see for many of them we've previously just wikilinked to the main team article with something like {{ru|Scotland}} A or {{ru|Scotland|name=Scotland A}}. Is there an intent to create seperate articles for all ten of these teams and go back and update those instances? I'm trying to get a handle on how flexible the template needs to be for names and/or links. Thanks again, Andrwsc (talk) 19:42, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Articles will eventually be created for all teams mentioned above. Especially as most of them play in recently created annual tournaments, as well as the long standing Six Nations A. I belive most are already linked to in the templates of the main national team (at the bottom of each article). --Bob (talk) 19:46, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Ok, great! Thanks for the help. Andrwsc (talk) 19:49, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Instead of creating any more templates, I think I can make it work by adding a new parameter to the existing {{ru}} set of templates. For example, you would use {{ru|SCO|team=A}} to get Scotland Scotland A {{ru|ENG|team=A}} to get England England Saxons. How does that look? Andrwsc (talk) 20:16, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

that would be good. Could it also be implemented on {{ru-rt}} and {{ru-big}}? --Bob (talk) 20:22, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, exactly. All three templates would work the same way. Andrwsc (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 20:24, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Ah, you know, it's going to be a lot more difficult than I first thought. The problem is that I think we want the display name to default to something like "Australia A" instead of just "Australia". All of the existing internal rendering templates (such as template:country flaglink and template:country bigflag) assume that you want to see the country name (only), regardless of the wikilink article name, and it would be messy to build something on top of that existing system. I think I shall pursue a "Plan B".... Andrwsc (talk) 20:55, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

I noticed that the A team article for Australia is at Australia A rugby union team instead of Australia A national rugby union team. Is that intentional, or something we should fix with a page move? Andrwsc (talk) 21:14, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
They should all be at the same layout for the title except the sides from NZL, RSA and ENG. Will move that one. --Bob (talk) 21:16, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Ok, I went with a "plan B" approach to create template:ruA. Take a look and let me know if you think it's ok. Underneath it all, it still uses the flag template system, but instead of adding a pair of statements to every country data template (i.e. link alias-rugby union A = Scotland A national rugby union team and name alias-rugby union A = Scotland A) and building the ruA templates in a similar way to the normal ru templates, I went with a different approach. Other that the four special cases in that switch statement (for the three unusual team names and for Ireland's special flag), every other team will work using the standard format (e.g. one day we could add  Fiji Warriors perhaps). What do you think? Andrwsc (talk) 21:32, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Looks good. Thanks. I'll start to use this one now. Will you create the ruA-rt and ruA-big ?? --Bob (talk) 21:36, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Just finished -rt and will do -big right away too. Andrwsc (talk) 21:38, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
I forgot to mention one important detail. The names of the Saxons etc were only recently introduced, prior to 2006, Saxons were England A, the Junior All Blacks were New Zealand U23 and Emerging Boks were South Africa A. --Bob (talk) 21:42, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I'll put back the ability to change the name (i.e. name=New Zealand U23), similar to the way the standard templates work. Andrwsc (talk) 21:44, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Bob247, I think it's time to archive the HIV talk page again (and a couple of others). I've never done it before, and it sounds like it's helpful to use the same method for a given page. Were you the last person to archive Talk:HIV? Can you tell me what method was used? (I'll watch this page if you want to reply here.) Thanks, WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:14, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Rugby Infobox Template

Hey GR, I've been directed to you by User:Shudde. I write on Austn Rugby League players but have an interest in Category:Dual code rugby internationals . For those I'm starting to use the wonderful infobox Template:Infobox Rugby biography rather than the RL box so I can detail full career history. In that box the State Representative section of a RL career is entitled " State of Origin". Whilst this is great for Austn post-1980 rep careers it's not accurate for pre-1980 when selection criteria was residential & not Origin based. Can you help me change this to "State Rep" or something similar. I know this doesn't accommodate Provincial/Regional rep appearances by Kiwi or Welsh dual-code ints but my understanding is that neither country has a rep level in between club & country. -Sticks66 (talk) 00:33, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Done, just add the parameter {{{sooteam pre-1980}}} and that will give you a different heading. The same exists for super rugby using the parameter {{{staterep}}}. Just equate either, or both to yes, and it will change the heading accordingly. See Wendell Sailor for an example. --Bob (talk) 18:40, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Rugby Infobox

I'm afraid knowledge of syntax is limited. Clarity is really my issue. If that infobox can be cleaned up I would back it, otherwise I prefer the other one, purely for the way it displays the information in a clear fashion.Alexsanderson83 (talk) 00:08, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

I need specifics as tow why it is less clear. It displays the same information and is similar to other infoboxes such as those for countries and monarchs. What makes it less clear? --Bob (talk) 00:09, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
It definitely looks better than it does just a short while ago. I will get back to you if I have any specifics.Alexsanderson83 (talk) 00:48, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Highlanders (rugby) peer review

Hey. I've been struggling to get any comments at my requested peer-review of Highlanders (rugby). I was wondering if you would be able to spend a few minutes reading through the article and adding any comments or suggestions here? Thanks. - Shudde talk 06:10, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

I completely agree. Other users have had dealings with this individual regarding conflicts about policy, and I don't believe they are going to stop. I guess all we can do is stand our ground, and if we have any further hassle from this person, we report them to the admins. – PeeJay 16:57, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

I was having trouble finding confirmation on the club logos. Have now had it pointed out to me at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Rugby_union#Navboxes_for_players. The reason for the revert was I was not finding the reason to why they could not be used, I have since been set straight on that matter. Apologies for any troubles the mass revert may have done, I now see that they indeed should not be used in this way (else risk them being removed from wikipedia and the club pages they are necessary for). Happy editing. CorleoneSerpicoMontana (talk) 21:13, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

hello, User:Astrotrain is trying to place the Arms of Great Britain on the Scotland page. This user claims on User talk:Astrotrain that "They are the Queen's Royal Arms, and they were linked to the relevant page. You can find the compromise agreement in the archives of the Scotland talk page." I finally located in the archives [archives] a conversation which involved yourself. My understanding from reading these archives is that there was no clear compromise, and if there was, it was to keep the status quo and not add the arms. I am contacting you over this matter as User:Astrotrain is continuing to try to add the said arms and has today stated in Talk:Scotland "There was a clear consensus, you can ask any of the other editors. I suspect you have other motives for making these changes. If you insist on moving the arms, they will be reinstated in the infobox then.". Yours, Czar Brodie (talk) 21:53, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Importance rating

Glad to see someone attacking the importance ratings of rugby union articles. But I must disagree that any tour by a top class nation can be classed as low. In my opinion they are all mid class at lowest. Please get in touch if you disagree? FruitMonkey (talk) 20:56, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

  • On the whole I think it's really good, there are areas where people are going to disagree, but I like the idea that players are not top rating, and there appears to be definite strategy to sorting this project out. My grief is always going to be in relating the old with the new, as I'm a fan of the ancient greats; it's difficult to assess a David Bedell-Sivright in comparison to an Austin Healy. Colour with Rugby navbox templates

I have added a vote at the rugby union community here on the subject that I believe that is at the very heart of the matter. I support one uniform coding for all clubs out there, however for me they should have their club colours, and not in purple. The RWC template does not allow the use of colours to the best of my knowledge. In short I believe that people either want coloured navboxes or do not, that is the crux of the issue here and the one that should be voted on. Many thanks.Londo06 07:25, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Australia national schoolboy rugby union team

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Australia national schoolboy rugby union team, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Non-notable schoolboy sporting team

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Cote d'Ivoire/Ivory Coast

As I have kept on telling you, both names are used in English. Check old programmes/books etc for details.--MacRusgail (talk) 19:24, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

I'll give you another couple of reasons why you are completely wrong. The Wikipedia entry for the country is at Côte d'Ivoire not "Ivory Coast", which is a redirect. Likewise the CIA Factbook refers to the country as Côte d'Ivoire see here. Yes, I've heard both, but you've not done your research here.

Just because the name is in French, doesn't mean it isn't used in English. After all we don't refer to Costa Rica as the Rich Coast, although I'm sure someone may start that trend sometimes. --MacRusgail (talk) 20:09, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

p.s. For your own reference:

==Name==

The region, and then the country, was originally known in English as "Ivory Coast". In October 1985, the government requested that the country be known in every language as Côte d'Ivoire[1] without a hyphen between the two words.

Usage in English

Despite the Ivorian government's request, the English translation "Ivory Coast" (sometimes "the Ivory Coast") is still frequently used in English. The BBC usually uses "Ivory Coast" both in news reports and on its page about the country.[2] The Guardian newspaper's Style Guide says: "Ivory Coast, not 'The Ivory Coast' or 'Côte D'Ivoire'; its nationals are Ivorians".[3] ABC News (USA), The Times, The New York Times, and the South African Broadcasting Corporation all use "Ivory Coast" either exclusively or predominantly.

Many governments use "Côte d'Ivoire" for diplomatic reasons. The English country name registered with the United Nations and used by ISO 3166 is "Côte d'Ivoire". Other organizations that use "Côte d'Ivoire" include the United States Department of State (which uses "Côte d'Ivoire" in formal documents, but uses "Ivory Coast" in many general references, speeches and briefing documents[4]), FIFA and the IOC (referring to their national football and Olympic teams in international games and in official broadcasts), The Economist newsmagazine,[5] Encyclopædia Britannica,[6] and National Geographic Society.[7]

As I have told you before - Cote d'Ivoire is the name used by Wikipedia itself, which means your move is of dubious merit in wikipedia terms. Since both names have been used in rugby circles, then this tips it firmly into the Cote D' Ivoire territory.

The CIA Factbook is used as an international reference on many matters, and I don't think you are in much of a position to criticise it on that score.

As for the commonality of the name that is not always a good guide. For example, the majority of English speakers use Holland to refer to the Netherlands, even though it should strictly only refer to part of them.

I'm not really sure what the issue is here, other than English speakers' generally pitiful attitude to other languages (in this case French). I will be taking this up elsewhere as it seems to have been a unilateral move.--MacRusgail (talk) 16:04, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

As I have stated on your talk page, there was a discussion regarding the move that was debated and then closed with the position to move the article. What happens with the countries page is irrelevant, as stated by the closing admin, to other articles title pages. The CIA does not name the rugby teams of the world. Do we rename all Chinese Taipei teams Taiwan because the CIA factbook lists the Republic of China as Taiwan? Do we rename the Republic of China article Taiwan because the CIA name it so? We should using your logic. In the case of the rugby article in question, WP:USEENGLISH and WP:COMMONNAME were both relevant during that discussion which led to a move that was not unilateral. As far as I am concerened, that move closed this argument. If you are pissed, take it up with the closing admin and the others that commented on that move. --Bob (talk) 20:58, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Infobox templates, County Unions and kits

Hi, I have little knowledge of how infoboxes are created or modified... I believe you created this template which is being used for various English Counties. I assume this is the correct use of your template; I have recently created Middlesex Rugby Football Union and applied it there. As many county RFUs originated as clubs and as counties have for years selected representative sides, would it be possible to include the kit information that you find in team infoboxes like Template:Infobox rugby team? It seems a bit unnecessary to create a seperate page for the team when they are essentially the same organisation as the union itself...!?

Many thanks Mbwa mwitu (talk) 15:54, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

The image will always stay the same size. I've been using it for 2011 European Under-18 Rugby Union Championship and the logo there is to fuzzy in its current size, I would like to make it smaller. Any idea why the template seems to dislike the parameter? Thanks, Calistemon (talk) 19:58, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Wiktionary confirmation

This is confirmation for the Wiktionary crew. --Bob (talk) 19:23, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Why on earth are you moving specific season articles to non-sponsored names? Yes, the main article for the competition should be non-sponsored and generic if several names have been used, but for specific seasons, the sponsored name is invariably the one that is the WP:COMMONNAME. Perhaps instead of reverting my moves you should have opened discussion with me as per WP:BRD. Nouse4aname (talk) 09:20, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Canvassing

Please don't canvass editors for an AfD. Mo ainm~Talk 21:45, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

You might want to read that page again, in particularly the opening sentence: In general, it is perfectly acceptable to notify other editors of ongoing discussions, provided that it is done with the intent to improve the quality of the discussion by broadening participation to more fully achieve consensus. I notified people who contribute to Rugby union articles. This is perfectly acceptable as I did not know if any would say delete or keep. --Bob247 (talk) 00:21, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Your response

Regarding you most recent response to me, perhaps you could try to remain civil and refrain from unnecessary personal attacks. Clearly I am able to read. Obviously we have both interpreted something different from the discussion. All I am asking is for you to provide a direct link or quote to back up what you claim was agreed upon, as I, quite frankly, do not see any such consensus having been reached regarding specific article seasons and sponsored vs non-sponsored names. There is no policy regarding the use of sponsored names on Wikipedia. The only naming guideline we need to consider is WP:COMMONNAME. For the main article on the competition, this is generally the non-sponsored name (except Heineken Cup, which has never had any other name). For specific seasons, the sponsored name is generally the common name. Further, I notice you have been reminded about canvassing for votes above, so won't lecture you on this, however I find your entire attitude entirely uncooperative and patronising. Nouse4aname (talk) 18:31, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Further...

How dare you describe my edits as "disingenuous" as you did here and here. I'm sure I don't need to remind you to assume good faith. In my opinion, just because an article may pass certain notability criteria, doesn't mean a crappy little stub article should be created when that information is simply duplicated from that which already exists elsewhere. Just because you disagree with me, doesn't mean I have in anyway been acting in any disruptive or sinister way. Nouse4aname (talk) 18:41, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Use of the French Coat of Arms

Hello Bob247!
Thank you for showing goodwill to contribute to the article French Armed Forces. However, the logo you put ([[File:Ministère de la défense et des anciens combattants logo.gif]]) is not suitable for many reasons:

  • It is a copyrighted image and a free SVG image is available to illustrate the subject: [[File:Armoiries république française.svg]]
  • The French Coat of Arms illustrates well the subject and allow the reader to clearly identify it, since we have adopted it to illustrate many articles related to the French Armed forces as you can see here: Portal:NATO/Member militaries, DPSD, Force de Frappe and even in the template of the French Armed Forces which is present on many pages: {{French military}}
  • Based upon other countries Armed Forces articles, a lot of them start with their seal like Spanish Armed Forces, British Armed Forces, Polish Armed Forces, Italian Armed Forces, ....
  • This Coat of Arms is being officially used by the UN alongside with the other countries Coat of Arms[1].

I also strongly advise you to establish a consensus in the talk page if you really think this copyrighted image should be used.
Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions or remarks. Best regards. Mouloud47 (talk) 18:53, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Hey Bob. I am working through the above article, trying to add refs and pics where possible and weed out some of the original research that has crept in. I was hoping to change the article titles to tidy it up a bit and thought that I would substitute the positional templates you implemented a few years ago at the same time. My idea is to direct the positions to Wing (rugby union), Fullback (rugby union) etc and then from there onto the section within the article if no article exists. As you created the templates I am hoping you would be lend your opinion here Talk:Rugby union positions#Section Names (yet again). If no one else comments in the next few days I will also drop a note at the Wikiproject. P.S. Good work on pushing through the notability criteria. AIRcorn (talk) 09:15, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

Wheelchair curling

Actually, you couldn't have chosen a worse example for me personally. My cousin happens to be heavily involved in wheelchair curling in Scotland! --MacRusgail (talk) 14:00, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Good wishes to him/her. As you can see though, there is no article listed as Great Britain wheelchair curling team, but there is one at the Great Britain at the 2010 Winter Paralympics#Wheelchair curling. --Bob247 (talk) 14:51, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Bangs head on desk. Or is it a brick wall? --MacRusgail (talk) 14:12, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi! It seems you recently created an unreferenced biography of a living person: Tomasi Cama. The community has decided that all new biographies of living persons must contain a reliable source that supports at least one statement made about the person in the article as per our verifiability policy. Please add references as soon as possible. Thanks! --LaraBot (talk) 00:10, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Fiji Rugby

Fix it !! ..--Stemoc (talk) 11:37, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

I don't appreciate the tone of the request. However, I obviously made a mistake, something happened as I was using a national newspaper list and the template from 2007. Something went screwy. I have now corrected the transclusions, but honey gets things done quicker than the thistle. --Bob247 (talk) 15:56, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Please take note

Please take note of a discussion ("Wikipedia and its relationship to the outside world") about medical ELs and related issues. You may want to follow the links provided to learn more if you are so inclined. Thank you in advance. I'm not looking for more comments, as there have been many already, but you're welcome to add yours if you want to. Presto54 (talk) 06:36, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

The Signpost interview

Thanks for adding to the interview, I hope we get picked up. It was great to hear your views too. FruitMonkey (talk) 21:57, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
Hi Bob, in regards to your answer to the RWC question, you might want to change your response before I send it to the newsroom in the next 12 hours or so. If not, I'll remove it so that the interview flows better with the timeline. Thanks again for participating! Cheers --SMasters (talk) 12:21, 29 October 2011 (UTC)

Capitalization of expressions borrowed from other languages

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_%28capitalization%29#Capitalization_of_expressions_borrowed_from_other_languages

<<< If the French expression is untranslated (not a loan word), follow French capitalization practice. There are some rules for French (usually: capitalize nouns in the expression that taken as a whole is a proper name, and in addition to that always capitalize the first word of the expression even if it is not a noun), but anyhow for many works of art the capitalization practice can be derived from the original publication, e.g. the capitalization of the title of a French novel can usually be derived from how it was published. >>>

I hope you will have the honesty to admit that you were wrong and insulting towards me.

en:WP recommends to respect the French spelling rules if you write a french expression which is not a loan word.

Therefore you have to write "Ecole normale supérieure de Cachan" like I did and NOT "Ecole Normale Supérieure de cachan" like you did. Euroflux (talk) 20:41, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

I have to ask if you read what you posted? capitalize nouns in the expression that taken as a whole is a proper name, and in addition to that always capitalize the first word of the expression even if it is not a noun. In the example cited, Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan is a proper name, and thus each word is to be capitalized. Thank you for playing. --Bob247 (talk) 22:05, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Regarding rugby templates

Please do not accuse me of vandalism when i clearly had no such intention - especially after i clearly stated the reasons for my reversion. Just because rugby templates do not currently have colour, does not mean this is the correct layout for the rugby templates. Every other sport i have seen on Wikipedia has a template colour scheme. I think it is about time rugby catch-up with the rest of Wikipedia's layout for sporting templates.

Regarding your claim that the Panasonic template is unreadable: Do i have to prove to one person that black text on a blue background is unreadable? If so, then how do i prove this. If you could give me the procedure of how i prove this then i would be more than happy.Suid-Afrikaanse (talk) 01:31, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

1. We use a standard template for all RU navboxes per WP:RU. If you wish to change it bring it up there. 2. the contrast of the panasonic colors is horrendous. These can be checked using the tools at WP:COLOR. --Bob247 (talk) 06:07, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

I see you have accused Suid-Afrikaanse of edit warring, but this is not appropriate when you are the party who is making the edits that he is objecting to. The appropriate guideline here is be bold, revert, discuss. You boldly made some changes to templates. He reverted them. Now you should discuss the matter, not throw accusations.-gadfium 06:04, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

It was perfectly appropriate as I don't want to see a valuable member be blocked if he continues to revert within the 24hrs. That is, unless, you like to see members blocked because they forget the rules...?? --Bob247 (talk) 06:10, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
Hello. Firstly, thankyou gadfium for your support. Okay, i have taken the template issue for further judgement here. And regarding the Panasonic colours: i did as you said and checked for their colour compatibility. The result was that they are incompatible. However, this is not a major issue as the black text can be exchanged for yellow (initially used for the border) - which is compatible. So the only issue that needs resolving is whether the templates should have colour or not.Suid-Afrikaanse (talk) 09:56, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
