Wikipedia Weekly Episode 63

[edit]

Hello! Wikipedia Weekly Episode 63, an interview with Florence Devouard, has been released. You can listen and comment at the episode's page and, as always, listen to all of the past episodes at wikipediaweekly.org. WODUPbot 06:58, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Accurate call. Pedro :  Chat  19:52, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Good call here. GlassCobra 20:27, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to say that was a fucking excellent decision, and bollocks to the naysayers. RMHED (talk) 22:41, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We wouldn't want you to feel unloved... :-) Hersfold (t/a/c) 04:13, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well played. :) EVula // talk // // 04:14, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This editor is moving the page "Ambitionz az a Ridah" back and forth between nonsense titles. I couldn't undo any of these. Since you're an administrator, can you restore this article back to normal and move-protect it? Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 23:07, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, someone else kinda took care of it. Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 23:23, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Always happy to provide a vague sensation of hope. EVula // talk // // 23:55, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for interrupting you again. Apparently Wakamusha continues his page move rampage. I've alerted another sysop, but is there anything you can do ATM? Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 00:31, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see anything that warrants additional action; it looks like the whole thing has cooled off, though I don't think calling the move "vandalism" helped the situation much... EVula // talk // // 03:59, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not even a move-protect? His civility isn't that good either [1]. Something that sends the message straight is all I ask. Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 04:26, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Warned for comment, but I don't see any point in move-protecting; not only would he likely just do a fork to bypass the protection (which would be an even bigger headache), he's also stopped moving the page, making it pointless. EVula // talk // // 04:37, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BlackCat

[edit]

Dear EVula,

I randomly selected you as the 'crat to (possibly) assist me in this matter. (And because I knew your name; since I nicked your header, but that aside..)

I'm in the process of creating a unified login (under the name BlackCat, Tjalling was made on this project because BlackCat already existed), but two (zero-edit) currently registered account prevent me doing so:

en.wikipedia.org and

pl.wikipedia.org.

I saw that you are a 'crat on the English Wikipedia, so, here I am: Could you either rename (or delete?) the account on the English Wikipedia?

And, if you -by any chance- know any Polish 'crats, could ask them to do the same with that project?

Thanks in advance,

Tjalling (Speak) 14:29, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What a handsome looking header you have on your userpage...
Anyway, before I do the rename, can you verify that you're the same person as BlackCat? All you have to do is put an interwiki link on nl:Gebruiker:BlackCat to your Tjalling userpage and I'll consider that evidence enough and will perform the rename. I'll even update the interwiki. :)
There's nothing I can do about the Polish section, though. pl:Wikipedia:Przejmowanie nazwy użytkownika does have English instructions, and is equivalent to our usurping page; looks like it'll be fairly pain-free (and you can use that same diff as evidence there, too). EVula // talk // // 14:58, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the assistance! (I love the header btw!) I just changed my user page there.
I'll be posting my request on that Polish section in a minute. - Tjalling (Speak) 20:59, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh and btw; good luck with your relocation! It must be a huge step. I hope all goes well. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tjalling (talkcontribs) 21:00, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, yes, that definitely works as verification. :)
Rename done. I also fixed your nl.wiki link... EVula // talk // // 21:59, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your help! (and the linkchange; I'll keep it there for now, for the Polish guys). I wish you all the best! BlackCat (Speak!) 22:20, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tracy

[edit]

Jessica was not Niki's twin, so there is nothing to contradict what has been stated on the show. Writers have said that Niki is dead for good, so it is either Tracy or Barbara. Saying that it could be someone else would be speculation on your part. If you're going to use that logic for Tracy/Barbara, then you need to do so for the other villains in the vision. For all we know, they could be shapeshifters or illusions. Ophois (talk) 23:29, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, that's ridiculous; we have zilch evidence that the other characters aren't who they appear to be, whereas we don't know the actual identity of Larter's character in that dream. If we're going to make wild claims like that, let's just say it was Parkman's dad giving her the vision in the first place, and not an actual dream... EVula // talk // // 23:31, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What are you talking about? We do know the identity of the character; it is either Tracy or Barbara. Niki is dead, so there are only two possibilities. You removing it because you feel that there are Niki clones out there is speculation. Ophois (talk) 23:32, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
*sigh* That was a joke. I removed it because we don't know which character it is, and I'm not comfortable with us definitively stating who it is. EVula // talk // // 23:36, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As long as you're indulging in OR speculation on this talk page, why was Monica Dawson cut from season 3? Does anyone know? KillerChihuahua?!? 23:39, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From what I've heard, Monica and Micah were both pretty much written out because nobody liked them. These are the same anonymous people that disliked Hiro being stuck in Japan, which I enjoyed immensely, so... *shrug*
One of the reasons Heroes is so great is that most of the characters are morally ambiguous; Noah Bennet started out as a bad guy who later evolved into a somewhat good guy, while Sylar is an absolute badass that tried really, really hard to be a good guy (and failed, but still). Micah and Monica were both rather "we can make it!" kind of characters. I'd love for them to actually do something with both characters; maybe they'll come back at some point, maybe they'll become feasts for Sylar, dunno. For now, though, I'm kind of happy that that entire thread has been cut (including Niki getting killed), though I'm still pissed at how abruptly they offed DL. EVula // talk // // 05:47, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean about "two shows"

[edit]

So you're saying you won't be doing much editing from now on? Does that mean an occasional edit or is this tantamount to retirement? Also what do you mean by "two shows?" Give me some explanation as you are featured on a wikipedia page. --Ipatrol (talk) 20:42, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm assuming he simply means he's going to be busy working on a few shows (ie theatre productions, or similar) once he's done moving, and then he'll be back. I wouldn't worry about losing our beloved EVula yet. ~ mazca t|c 20:45, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Mazca is more in the know about my real-life activities than most around Wikipedia, as we know each other from elsewhere on the internets. (and, as evidence of this fact, I'd like to point out that he's 100% right) If you look at User:EVula/header's history, you'll see that I do lots of shows over the course of a year, and each one is marked by a semi-wikibreak. The only thing that's unusual this time is that I'm moving first.
Really, you don't need to do anything (in fact, the entire crux of my message to you was to tell you to not do anything); if I'm going to retire, I'm more than capable of informing everyone myself, and my amusing mention on Wikipedia:Adminitis is irrelevant (since I'd still be right even if I retired). Fact is, you just plain shouldn't modify other people's userspaces unless you know all the details (a good example would be my wikibreak notice for hmwith, who I talk to often off-wiki and I'd cleared the message placing with prior), which you didn't. Like I said, thanks for the effort, but you really don't need to worry about it. EVula // talk // // 21:19, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My edits were ment to be forms of suggestions. Edits like these fall under the category of edits I would not change back if they are reverted. If you simpily ask me I will stop changing your userpage. HOWEVER, I think Radiant can speak for him/her self. There is no need for you to go and yell at me, your acess to admin tools does not grant you any special status or duty beyond the use of the tools.--Ipatrol (talk) 23:40, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not yelling at you; I'm escalating the level of intensity for the communication, given the fact that you didn't "get it" with my first message. Wikipedia:User page states: "[I]t is considered polite to avoid substantially editing another's user page without their permission." You're editing peoples' userpages when they don't need editing; I also reverted your edits to User:Faizaguo, where you placed a different wikibreak template[2] and for whatever reason placed {{dubious}} next to a claim about the user's age.[3]
I'm well aware of what my position of administrator allows (and doesn't allow) me to do; it's an ephemeral position, one that can be revoked at any time by the community at large, but I'm not abusing my status in any way. You're simply out of line by making presumptions about other editors, and while I initially asked you to stop, you're now being told. EVula // talk // // 23:55, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just happened across the 'game' he was having with you. I think it's User:TimySmidge. Sticky Parkin 03:22, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What fun. He hasn't done anything in a while, unless you've got some evidence, there's not much that can be done. Oh well, looks like he's started being productive anyway... EVula // talk // // 03:50, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't you be unpacking?

[edit]

Well Evula, In this case I disagree with WP:EVULA; I truly think you are wrong. There is not a single guideline or policy on the face of Wikipedia that say someone can't or shouldn't edit someone else's userpage. If a user has any objections to my edits they can contact me at my talk page and state their objections. Some users have enjoyed my edits to their or their bot's userpage, like the second button on FoxyLoxy's LoxyBot. A standard user or IP can make a posting on my talk page by themself; they don't need you to be their little watch-fairy. If someone needs you for a Rfa, bot tagging, or user renaming, then they have a need to contact you. P.S.: You work in play productions? --Ipatrol (talk) 23:21, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here I am stalking EVula's talk page again... WP:UP#OWN would appear to be a guideline that says exactly that. "In general it is considered polite to avoid substantially editing another's user page without their permission." I really don't think EVula's being unreasonable here - peoples userpages are usually edited by the user themselves, and when you add meaningful information to anothers userpage that they may not agree with, then everyone who visits that page will think that user added it. I'd definitely suggest that you only edit the userpages of people who specifically asked you to, rather than waiting for them to object - some people don't watch their own userpages and may not notice your edit for some time. ~ mazca t|c 06:59, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Words cannot express how hilarious I find it that you are telling me "they don't need you to be their little watch-fairy". It's obvious that not everyone appreciates your work; Michael Snow was as similarly pleased as I was about your edit to his userpage.[4] I have given you ample warning. If you continue to make major unsolicited edits to users' personal pages, you will be blocked for disruption.
If you just absolutely have to make modifications to a user's page, follow it up immediately with a message on their talk page; I'll readily admit to being pretty pissed off that you edited my page without even telling me (it was damn near a full day before I even noticed that you'd made the edit; with 2700 items on my watchlist, it's easy for something to slip thru). I think that is a fair compromise between our two stances. EVula // talk // // 15:22, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you look here, you actually see he appreciated my barnstar, he just moved it here. Read the line that Macaza brought up:

My edits were minor changes that were always followed by an explaitory edit summary. This is also an "it is considered" statement, meaning it is not a strict requirement. Any blocks by you on this issue is and will be contested as administrative abuse. In the future I will give more talk page suggestions than actual edits and any edits I make will be noted on the talk page.--Ipatrol (talk) 21:15, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"I actually keep my user page plain by choice" is akin to my statement to you of "thanks but not thanks". I'm not saying that the barnstar wasn't appreciated, I'm saying that the edit of the page itself wasn't (which his statement corroborates). As for the "followed by an explaitory edit summary" bit, as I explained, it's very easy to overlook something like that on a watchlist; that isn't sufficient.
Really, if you actually use the talk page to inform people of your edits, that's good enough for me. Thank you for the pseudo-lesson on administrative abuse, unwarranted as it is. EVula // talk // // 21:40, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Interwiki bot gone wild

[edit]

Oh great purveyor of interwiki links, if it pleases you, could you perhaps review this pt interwiki bot's edits especially to templates, as it doesn't seem to be properly adding them to the non-included documentation... Thanks! –xeno (talk) 12:57, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since I need to pack up boxes here at work (first I'm moving at home, then at work; what fun I'm having), can you follow up with Rei, xeno? EVula // talk // // 15:17, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Userboxes

[edit]

Hey, EVula, help me out. I need some userboxes for the following. Think you can help? :

  1. This user is Pentecostal (Christianity, but not Catholic)
  2. This user likes Christian Radio
  3. This user likes Jars of Clay
  4. This user likes Relient K
  5. This user watches Nickelodeon
  6. This user watches Cartoon Network
  7. This user likes the Bears
  8. This user gets homesick
  9. This user reads Get Fuzzy

If such exist, post them on my talk page. I'll do the rest. --WeezleBeezle (talk) 20:47, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Right now, I don't have time; as per the wikibreak note at the top of the page, I don't even have an internet connection at home (and won't until Monday). You can make your own userboxes with {{Userbox}}, or possibly look for existing ones for the bands by going to the article, clicking the "What links here" link in the toolbox, and selecting just the User namespace; using that technique allowed me to find {{User:Ashley Y/Userbox/Pentecostal}} rather easily. (you can also use {{User band-2}} for the bands) EVula // talk // // 21:04, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Advice needed

[edit]

I am canvassing a few bureaucrats about an issue. My personal ID now appears on a certain "watch" site. I have been outed, to put it bluntly. I'm actually not sure why I am considered a "leader" of "the hive." Should I go ahead and post my real name on my user page? My real concern is for family members' privacy. Bearian (talk) 18:08, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't; just because your name is out there doesn't mean you need to draw additional attention to it. (I've been "outed" already, but it's considerably less impressive, since my real name is rather easily found, though I don't have it anywhere obvious in my userspace) EVula // talk // // 20:46, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sad sysop behavior

[edit]

Personal attacks like this usually aren't appreciated, especially from admins. The admin took an increasingly aggressive tone leading up to this personal attack, when I had the audacity to question his additions, and attempt to enforce Wikipedia's most basic rule. I feel as if an apology is owed at the very least, and possibly re-examining the user's administrative privileges. Tool2Die4 (talk) 19:28, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure why you're coming to me about it; if you want an apology, take it up with John himself. However, I'd like to point out that you didn't exactly help the situation with the "it's scary that you're an admin" comment; while he shouldn't have called you an asshole, I can definitely understand why he'd be a bit upset. EVula // talk // // 19:36, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Mainly because you're a 'crat. And it is quite scary when an admin endorses adding unreferenced material. But then again, that's why Wikipedia is a joke. Nevermind. Tool2Die4 (talk) 19:42, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bureaucrats can't do anything about this; we can promote users that have passed an RfA, but outside of that, we're just regular editors. The first step is to contact the offending editor directly. EVula // talk // // 19:57, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

UAA

[edit]

On my Rfa, you'd expressed concern about my report of User:Fullyang to WP:UAA. I had actually created that account per an Account Creation request as part of my duties on the account creation team. I didn't notice until after I'd created it that the e-mail address was using the Fullyang.com domain name. Do you still think the UAA request was wrong? I'd like to hear your thoughts.--Aervanath lives in the Orphanage 03:34, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That is a very different situation; registering the username and then realizing that it may not have been the best idea is very different from patrolling the new user list and happening to toss a .com at the end of the name and realizing it's a 200. It appeared as if the latter was what happened, which is why it caused so much concern for everyone (myself included). EVula // talk // // 02:03, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Hi, was this directed at me? If so could you explain what you mean? ~ User:Ameliorate! (with the !) (talk) 16:16, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Partly, but it was more a general nip-in-the-bud for that entire thread; though I'm fairly certain Stifle meant that the argument was petty, it came across as if they said "A Nobody is rather petty". Not the most helpful tone in an RfA (especially considering the fact that, ultimately, it doesn't matter; with 49 supports and 1 oppose, there's no risk of that one !vote bringing the RfA down. Possible non-free on Commons

[edit]

Hey, would you look into Image:Flyleaf3-1-.jpg? It's on Commons, but I highly doubt it's free, or made by the uploader. GlassCobra 11:19, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, obviously spot-on about the logo, but the base image itself... it's got (apparently) valid metadata, the appropriate amount of noise that I would expect, and it's a large file (28 by 21 inches at 72 dpi, which is about right for a 5MP camera). The strangest thing about the image from a technical standpoint is that it was done in December 2007 and uploaded October 2008 (the info template says this, and is corroborated by the metadata), but that's a pretty weak thing to nail an image to for a deletion request. New Admin at the Half-Life Wiki?

[edit]

Hi EVula. :)

The Overwiki really doesn't have the adminship that it needs right now, I'm too busy with real life stuff to spend as much time as I'd like right now, and Coming Second has only made 5 edits this month. Anyway, a user named Klow requested adminship some months ago (you discussed it with him but nothing happened) and still wants the job. He appears to be competent and I could use the help, so what do you say? --MattyDienhoff 02:57, 26 November 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by MattyDienhoff (talkcontribs) [reply]

Yeah, I've been blowing off my Wikia stuff in favor of the WMF projects I'm active on... I'll pop over tonight when I get home from dinner. Thanks for the heads up; it's fairly easy to forget that I have pending messages on Wikia, versus Wikipedia, when I'm on at least five times a day. :) EVula // talk // // 03:07, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Kintaro cutout.png)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Kintaro cutout.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. No closing comments on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Adolphus79? davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 04:26, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Er, no. I didn't think it was warranted; numerically speaking, it closed at 66% (since I didn't consider the smoking !vote), which isn't all that close to the traditional "discretionary range" of 70-75%. EVula // talk // // 04:30, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just as an extra (and unecessary) comment, RfA's closed as no-consensus don't need a closing comment except under truly exceptional circumstances. If an RfA is closed at no-consensus, it means the closing 'crat has read through the discussion and come to the conclusion that the community hasn't come to a wide enough agreement that the editor is trustworthy enough for adminship. Premature RfA Closure

[edit]

No, not worthit, obviously I am not "experienced" enough to be on wikipedia, so just forget me making any more contribs on this site. I am just disrespected and told I have no experience in wikicode or administration of a website on any level when I have a masters degree in those subjects. But, whatever, it's not worthit, when people disrespect me, I don't really want to keep coming back to the website that repeatedly makes me feel like my degrees are just pieces of paper with writing on them, and nothing more. So, just forget it, as I am obviously not wanted here, by people like Roux, and by the way, what a welcoming talk page, thanks for pointing out one edit I made to it so this campaign could fail. I appreciate it. Glad I wasted six months of my life working on this crap just to be rejected. NitrogenTSRH (talk) 22:28, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Judging by your reaction, I'm guessing a collaborative work environment isn't the best fit for you. I'm sorry, and while I do appreciate your past contributions, I think you'd be best off by not editing; this is hardly the highest level of conflict you'd come into contact with as an administrator. EVula // talk // // 22:31, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, don't edit anymore, as you don't need me. That's what you just said. Doesn't work well in a Collaborative work environment? You realize that I run a corporation with over 500+ employees I have to "manage" daily, which is in Real Life, not just the internet. I have to collaborate with other Java and C++ developers just like myself all over the globe, but people RESPECT me, and I am not getting that here. And there is not a conflict with you or your decision, just the general attitude that the other users do not assume I have good intentions, or am competent enough to decide whether a vandal should be blocked, or something of this nature. I make two mistakes in the past, and suddenly there are pile-ons, which are NOT allowed on Wikipedia, and you expect me to be happy about this? Then you criticize me about my reaction when I am told that I am not experienced enough to edit an encyclopedia? NitrogenTSRH (talk) 22:36, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whoa there. I never said you weren't wanted; I said you weren't ready, and that your statements of your achievements aren't necessarily entirely in accord with the reality on the ground. I actually pointed out several mistakes you've made, not just one. Bottom line: you're not ready to have the extra access that admins get. Nor am I, for that matter. It's nothing personal. Real-life achievements don't necessarily translate well onto Wikipedia. Our collaborative work environment isn't the same as a real-world one. //roux   22:38, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"

I'm sorry, and while I do appreciate your past contributions, I think you'd be best off by not editing"

I'm sure EVula will respond when he has time to. //roux   23:02, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You say you're 17, then say you're in charge of a corporation with 500+ employees? And you have multiple degrees? Forgive me if I find that hard to believe.
Nobody has said you aren't experienced enough to edit Wikipedia, only that you don't have enough edits for an RfA to pass (and if you really do have "many different accounts" and "have made over 20000+ contributions", please share those account names so the boast can be corroborated; otherwise, let it go. EVula // talk // // 23:08, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I used the same information from my facebook profile which I created a long time ago. I didn't even type that information, my brother used this account long before me, and I am 13 years older than him. He was the one who originally created this account. Even though it is none of your business. NitrogenTSRH (talk) 23:14, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And, a seventeen year old probably does not have the knowledge of PHP that I do. Go to my website, www.datapile.org, then criticize me. NitrogenTSRH (talk) 23:15, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PHP is hardly a college-level skillset; I had ample website development ability when I was in high school, though I didn't attend Rutherford High School; maybe their curriculum is more stringent. EVula // talk // // 23:19, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Six momths eh. And in that time you've become one of the very few 'crats who actually live up to the perceived qualities of the role. My mistake in not endorsing you to be honest - you've done great work. I can only hope you will continue to act in the way you have done, as opposed to the liars and self interest POV pushers who also have the bureaucrat right. Pedro :  Chat  22:14, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That actually means a lot to me; I was looking my RfB over after this topic was posted, and your opposition was the only that I felt still had a particular edget to it after withdrawal (versus some of the ones that were redacted... and then there was the lone oppose !vote that was rather confusing). I try pretty hard to live up to the (perhaps mistaken) perception of bureaucrats are the "cream of the crop;" it's nice to know that I'm fairly successful. I'm planning on my next six months being just as sane as the last six, so here's hoping I continue to deserve your respect. :) EVula // talk // // 22:44, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Fight Club

[edit]

Hey EVula, I am not sure why the link I added for Fight Club was against any kind of posting guidelines... I gave the link external linking guide a thorough read and consider it match all 4 of the points under "What should be linked". Could you please outline why this link was removed? If IMDb, Metacritic, Rotten Tomato's etc... can be there, I am more than certain TMDb can be too. Travisbell (talk) 10:51, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

IMDb, Metacritic, and Rotten Tomatoes are all notable sites, used by lots of people and certified as trustworthy (to varying degrees and depending on what we're talking about; IMDb is notoriously bad for stuff that hasn't been released yet, but is solid for existing films). TMDb is a new site with no notability (there aren't any neutral third parties that can verify anything about it). We don't link to every website relevant to a film, just a select few. I'm not a fan of the "place a ton of warnings" system. I prefer to place a very short block (in this case, three hours) once I've established that someone's got an axe to grind (it wasn't their first edit to the article with the exact same content). Sends the message that we're serious about vandalism a lot more than fifty "hey, please stop" templates. EVula // talk // // 17:18, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Now that I have become an administrator, I have had a look at Special:ListGroupRights and would like some clarification regarding what some of the rights given to Administrators actually entail. Namely, could you provide me with more information about the nature and uses of the import, editinterface, centralnotice_admin_rights, move-rootuserpages, reupload-shared, trackback, centralnotice_translate_rights, upload_by_url and apihighlimits functions and features? Thanks in advance. It Is Me Here t / c 19:33, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You are far more thorough than I am; half those I don't really know. :) editinterface just means that you can edit the MediaWiki namespace (which is where various interface files are, such as MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown). move-rootuserpages means that you can move a user's main userpage, and the sub-pages will go with it (I believe). reupload-shared means that you can override a file name that exists on Commons. Some of the others don't appear to have any function on Wikipedia; we don't use trackbacks, and an admin isn't likely to be using Wikipedia's APIs under normal circumstances (apihighlimits). EVula // talk // // 20:40, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see; but what are trackbacks and the API? And what is the MediaWiki page sitting behind Special:ListGroupRights so that I can stick some blue links in there and at least attempt to demystify it? It Is Me Here t / c 20:51, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd recommend not playing with some of them ..... particularly given the April 1st issues of this year when certain admins changed various Mediawiki interfaces and notice for the lulz ..... :) BTW API = Application programming interface Pedro :  Chat  20:53, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

By the looks of your contrib history, it seems our prime editing times neatly fail to overlap at all. <grins>

I'd be grateful for some feedback at Wikipedia:Bureaucrats'_noticeboard#Review_of_declined_CHU_request. Thanks. --Dweller (talk) 16:34, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure thing. I'll give it a look in a bit; I don't have much Wikipedia time at the moment, and only happened to swing by because of something I noticed on Wikiquote. :) EVula // talk // // 17:17, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm impressed ;-)

[edit]

I'm impressed! [9], [10], [11], [12]. FloNight♥♥♥ 19:03, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, not long after I got my Wikiquote sysop bit, I went thru the past couple of months' VfDs and made sure that all Wikipedia links were cut, as well as killing all interwiki links to the deleted articles. Now I just keep an eye on VfDs as they get closed down (and of course do it as part of my closing procedure). You're just the first person to notice. ;) EVula // talk // // 22:35, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think I started most of those VFD, so I recognized the names. :-) FloNight♥♥♥ 22:47, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unsurprising, which is why your RfA is doing as well as it is. ;) EVula // talk // // 06:44, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! As a bureaucrat on Wikipedia, I'd very much appreciate it if you would fill in your details on the newly updated Bureaucrats page. Thanks! Majorly talk 14:28, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done, though I'll admit that I'm retarded when it comes to figuring out my relationship to UTC, especially since the time that I'm active on Wikipedia is very, very wonky (doubly compounded by the fact that sometimes I'm active on a wiki, but not on en.wp itself). EVula // talk // // 16:39, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I think I must have been edit conflicting with you in trying to fix that. Thank you. LovesMacs (talk) 06:43, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I thought the rollback would catch it all. D'oh. And just as I was heading to bed, too... EVula // talk // // 06:45, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think you should probably wipe those edits from the history too before you go to bed. Good night! LovesMacs (talk) 06:48, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What edits? /me whistles nonchalantly... EVula // talk // // 06:51, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

bump

[edit]
Barneca tosses pebble at window I never know how to handle it when I don't hear back from someone; I don't want to nag if you're aware, but I don't want to just say nothing if you just forgot either. Regarding my email, if you've just got higher priorities ATM, that's cool, just trying to tie up loose ends before I leave for the holidays. Merry Christmas/Happy New Year, by the way. --barneca (talk) 13:07, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nagging is most appropriate, because my life hit a giant busy shitstorm not long after I said "I'll respond in a little bit" (but on the plus side, it's pretty much subsided now). Very much my fault, and many apologies. :) EVula // talk // // 16:00, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I'll just keep tossing a pebble a week until you reply. :) --barneca (talk) 22:44, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not a bad way to go, though with Christmas coming around, I've hopefully got a bit more spare time. Yay for not having to do any work until the 29th! :) EVula // talk // // 22:47, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey

[edit]

This was quite a nice display of faith in the project. Good to know some of the "users who have edited too much" are still... not completely disheartened :) Fvasconcellos (t·c) 01:48, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm able to maintain my relative faith in (and dedication to) Wikipedia's goals by spreading myself out across several different projects. Staking out a new corner of the WMF to make one's self at home in is amazingly cathartic.
You can see how many sysop flags I've got to get a pretty good idea of how many times I've almost burnt out. ;) EVula // talk // // 17:02, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Holidays!

How to verify someone is an administrator

[edit]
Hi EVula. I made a request for a name change, following a request from someone claiming to be an administrator on the German wikipedia. I've attempted to check to verify it isn't just some random guy wanting my username. However, from the look of things, I have been around at least a year longer than him as far as edits go; he does seem to potentially have more, but they might be smaller. How can I verify this guy is at least nominally who he claims to be? His accounts seem to be User:JD_de and de:user:JD

JD (talk) 19:54, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial:Benutzer&limit=1&username=JD Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 20:19, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like I'll go ahead and give it to him, then. Thanks for the assist. JD (talk) 20:44, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
...I love it when I don't have to do anything. :) Thanks, Martijn.
For the record, "Special:ListUsers" can be used in any language; for example, de:Special:ListUsers will automagically translate to the localized version. EVula // talk // // 23:42, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

coi dispute

[edit]

Hi, there's a coi disagreement on the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Aaron_Wapniak

Would you mind reviewing the article? I believe the subject matter to be neutral - we need a third party opinion, and I respect yours. If it's not neutral, I'd appreciate assistance making it so.

NYArtichoke (talk) 04:06, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You'd probably be better off asking someone else; COI violations are hardly my speciality. I took a very brief look, though, and I don't see much cause for concern. EVula // talk // // 22:01, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A modest proposal

[edit]

Spoilsport. I was just getting the popcorn. (Remember, and make allowances for the fact, that most editors on this side of the Atlantic have at this point been drinking solidly for at least four hours.) – iridescent 21:58, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies. Next time I'll try to let it go a bit longer... perhaps I'm just pissy because I haven't gotten to drink yet. Damn parties don't start for another few hours... EVula // talk // // 22:01, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Happy New Year
