Sirus

[edit]

Hey. I came across the page Sirus. After checking through its history it has something to do with religion (something I'm not very educated on) but at the moment it has been going through an uncanny amount of vandalism that has slipped under the radar of other users. Seeing as I'm not quite the person to be dealing with this because I wouldn't have a clue how to rewrite it after I reverted it could you possibly find somebody who knows more about the topic? Cheers. Normy132 03:01, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, fair enough. Thanks for that. Normy132 01:49, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It dosen't qualify as a TV screensoht. I'll change the tag. Je suis desolé. --Jboyle4eva 15:06, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, wasn't aware of that. You better delete it then as it's copyright infringment. Apologies once again. --Jboyle4eva 15:10, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, it cut me off and I can't get back in! Good luck with the elections, though, but doesn't look like you'll need it! EVOCATIVEINTRIGUE TALKTOME | EMAILME | IMPROVEME 13:32, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm using Opera and it prompted me to change my name anyway, but still won't let me back in! Damn, I'm so thirsty too, I'd even except a salt-water!
Not particularly good (read:terrible) with IRC, how do you ghost exactly?
EDIT: Pretty off-topic, what are your views on welcoming IP and registered users? (See my talk page if you're interested/have time!).

Thanks for the IRC aid! I'll give it a go if I get back in....EVOCATIVEINTRIGUE TALKTOME | EMAILME | IMPROVEME 13:39, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. And with anon users, personally I would only welcome them if they were making good edits. If they were vandalism, the "welcome" is kind of included in {{test}}. With registered users, I have been known to welcome many at a time without them having any edits, and if I see a non-new user without a welcome, I will normally go along and welcome them. Except, of course, they are vandalising, in which case I will either give them a stern telling off (welcome included), or block them, depending on the rate of vandalism etc ;) — FireFox 13:44, 03 July '06

Same here: I think I found that particular user in the sandbox. Unluckily the edits I checked missed the vandal-like edits (the really obvious ones, too!), but nonetheless I still feel they deserved a welcome: I did an IP whois and the IP may be used by more than one person.
Thanks for your thoughts!

You just blocked this user. If you look at the edit history of User:Jaunio, you'll find they match, making it likely they are sockpuppets. Perhaps you should check, and block the latter too. Thanks. -- Ec5618 09:59, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unacceptable speedy keep

[edit]

You speedy kept Gay Nigger Association of America, depriving me of my right to comment. But not only me! Around half of all Wikipedia accounts have been opened since the last proper debate on the article. Do you propose that debate on the matter should be confined to those who signed up in 2005 or earlier forever? If you do, could you please explain which Wikipedia policy supports this kind of oligarchic practice? Cloachland 02:35, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A user you blocked recently, General Tojo, continues to use multiple sockpuppets and has now begun threatening to revert particular editors' edits. I don't know what, if anything, can be done about this but I wanted to bring it your attention. --ElKevbo 14:51, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

subst:templates

[edit]

Thanks for the reminder, started doing it a few days ago. :) --Andeh 11:13, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You know people at WP:AIV can use subst vandal template, e.g. {{subst:vandal|some random user}} makes - some random user (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log). But I guess they don't use this method as it's much easier to do it the other way.--Andeh 11:17, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ohh I see, your FFBot is getting mad at me. Good thing bots don't have feelings. :)--Andeh 12:29, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As I thought. Maybe it should give an automated message if it finds 10 or so in a row? Wish I could write a bot.--Andeh 12:31, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bots with AWB

[edit]

Hey I'm wondering how your bot works with AWB, if it's not a secret. Did you edit the AWB code or is it some external program? I am thinking of writing something to help unicodifying, mainly to help with New Zealand topics (a lot of Māori terms and place names all over the place).--Konstable 10:51, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was just here to comment about your bot too, it's very busy! Can you show me how to clone it so I can get another one going? e.g FFBot2. --Andeh 15:58, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds dreadfully complicated. Do you run it on the same PC you use to edit? :(--Andeh 16:13, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I created AP.BOT, which category does your bot work off? Thanks for assistance. :)--Andeh 16:25, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah never mind, I am 100% newbie using AWB. It's probably best I experiment with it myself otherwise I'd be bugging you all day.--Andeh 16:29, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bot marking edits as non-minor

[edit]

Any chance you could have FFBot mark edits as minor? I got some complaints about my bot whenever I was running my edits as major. A lot of editors (me included) choose to remove minor edits from their recent changes list. Bots not marking edits as minor really screw things up. Thanks. Alphachimp talk 16:06, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They don't hide (and get the little "b" next to their edits) until you get the bot flag. I got mine after my 1 week trial. BTW, I approve of what your bot is doing. Good idea. Let me know if you want any help (Alphachimpbot is very bored). Alphachimp talk 16:13, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I put in a request. Maybe this'll help a bit. Regards, Alphachimp talk 16:39, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Quick question: how do you remove the non-usertalk pages from the list? For my cleanup bot, I just click the "remove non-mainspace" option in the file menu. But, obviously, user talk is not mainspace. Do you have some quick and easy way of doing it? Alphachimp talk 16:46, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Unacceptable speedy keep

[edit]

The article has already had 17 previous AfDs, the last of which was a matter of weeks ago. As a side note, I removed a fair use image from your userpage, as it can only be used in articles without being a copyright problem. — FireFox 10:09, 05 July '06

The last discussion which was allowed to run its course was in July last year so your comment is a repeat of your two-fingered salute to democracy and openness. Cloachland 17:36, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It appeared as another bad faith nomination, same as the last 10, 11, 12 AfD it's had. — FireFox 17:40, 08 July '06
That's a spurious response. You can't know that, and nor can the others who closed them all. It seems to me that a group of you have simply decided that anyone who disagrees with you is not entitled to an opinion. Cloachland 17:43, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's your opinion. — FireFox 17:49, 08 July '06

AWB Edits

[edit]

I've been trying to set up AWB to subst talk page templates, but I'm running into a ton of issues, enough that I can't think of it as reliable. My biggest issue is that I am coming up with tons of nowiki'ed and templates used in conversation. How do you deal with these? Alphachimp talk 02:13, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently he's not dealing perfectly with them, either. [1] Note that technically, the name inside the comment shouldn't have been substed. Not a life-threatening bug, and the template was fixed later, just another heads up. Femto 12:24, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandilization of political website

[edit]

I have noticed a clear vandilization of this webpage: Maryland U.S. Senate election, 2006 by Fearwig. It is so bad that even the Democratic poll numbes have been changed, each by a few points. Also, Michael Steele was added in the first paragraph, which I deleted. On a Wikipedia article about Daniel_Vovak Fearwig at one point deleted all mention of my wig, then reverted it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by DanielVovak (talkcontribs)

  • Poll numbers were changed in accordance to the poll results, to include all registered democrats and not just those listed "certain to vote". You can find this out by reading the edit history notes. I thought the portion of your page referring to your wig was vandalism--by someone else--then realized my error... as you can see, again, if you read the edit history. Additionally, you probably shouldn't be involved in editing this article or any related to it since you are in fact a candidate in the race (however symbolic your efforts may be), and since your account was created for the sole purpose of editing information relevant to the race (as one can see from your contributions list). You are turning out to be as interesting a character as your website (and wig gimmick) would indicate, but you're acting somewhat paranoid, if not totally disruptive, on Wikipedia. You are right re: Lew Wallace's reported stomach cancer. I was actually suspicious of the source since cancer diagnosis didn't really exist at the time of his death. Categories

[edit]

Hello,

I have a question for you regarding Wiki Categories. If a person’s cause of death is, say, stomach cancer, I know to include the Category ‘Stomach cancer’ to their Article. Should I not also add the Main Category, ‘Cancer deaths’? If I do not add this main Category, the person in question would not be included in this main list, and, therefore, what is the purpose of having this main Category list. This is a question that has been bothering me for some time in Wiki, and I have gotten into some disputes with others who say both Categories do not belong in the same article – that including the Main Category, 'Cancer deaths' is redundant. What are your thoughts on this?

Regards,

Michael David 12:42, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you!
I went to the link you gave me. There I found this: "An article should usually not be in both a category and its subcategory… except when the article defines a category as well as being in a higher category, e.g. Ohio is in both Category:U.S. states and Category:Ohio." In the case of cancer, 'Cancer deaths' and 'Death from stomach cancer'.
Therefore, I shall continue to include both categories in the same Article. It just didn’t make good sense not to.
To me Categories are there to help make researching a subject easier; they generate lists I can work from. I don't want to have to call up a zillion separate lists to, for example, find all persons who died from cancer. (As morbid as this sounds, someone's got to do it).
Thank you, again,
Be healthy,
Michael David 13:40, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

your edit to Big Brother series 7

[edit]

I intend to investigate whether you have broken any rules relating to your authority as an administrator in making changes to a page on which you appear to have placed a temporary edit restriction. Rest assured, that if I find that you have, I will persue this strenuously through a complaint and arbitration process. If this was not you, or you have not breached rules, I apologise in advance, but something looks fishy to me. leaky_caldron 19:58, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Big Brother nominations table (UK series 7). you mean you've done this to several articles? In the words of the song by The Police, "I'll be watching you"! leaky_caldron 20:07, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
you knew precisely which article I meant. I find it reprehensible when someone with authority abuses it for their own benefit. If you have inadvertently done this, I suggest to revert immediately. If, as an administrator, you can make personal edits to a page you have placed under temporary restriction, can you please show me where that is expressly permitted? leaky_caldron 20:15, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think you have breached both parts of the following policy:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:List_of_protected_pages#policy

Your reply and consequent actions will determine how far I need to take this leaky_caldron 20:32, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

the policy seems clear:

1 Do not edit a temporarily protected page except to add a protected page notice. 2 Do not protect a page on which you are involved in an edit dispute (Category:Conflicts).

can you confirm that you are certain that you have not breached the first of these? You did edit the page, as an administrator, while under protection. leaky_caldron 20:50, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For the benefit of your friend, how is sending messages to and from a user page disrupting Wikipedia? leaky_caldron 20:50, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

for the record, I know it was NOT you who placed the edit block on the page. I also know that you are an administrator. I also can see that you edited the article while it was under protection. I have read the policy summarised above (Do not edit a temporarily protected page except to add a protected page notice.)
What more do you suggest I need to be aware of? Incidentally, it was the premature and poor quality of the edit, politely commented on by another contributor, that I was concerned about. leaky_caldron 20:59, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Gee thanks. A massive four words between my version, and someone elses... I don't know what you expect me to do or say. — FireFox 21:01, 23 July '06
the poor quality of your edit (Grammar, tense and the fact that it reports something that has not yet happend) says everything about your concern for accuracy and quality, and seems to demonstrate your desire to flex your administrator powers while ordinary contributors stand by and watch leaky_caldron 21:13, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
you could simply accept that you've breached the administrators's rules on editing protected pages http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Protection_policy#editing and attempt to be a little less enthusiastic about your pet topic. Remember that other people wish to read facts - not speculation leaky_caldron 21:33, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

appeal your deletion of 2022 FIFA World Cup

[edit]

Impossible to gather what logic you applied to this decision. Was it just a case of adding up the votes or did you even bother to read the arguments? Do you operate a slash and burn approach to all your wikipedia contributions ? This may sound like it's uncivil but I assure you it is not. Can you please take a step back and just think for a moment about what you have done. It makes no sense whatsoever to simply dispense with a factual article and you offer no explanation. Just like the guy who is annoyed with you about your Big Brother antics, I too will pursue this. Palx 07:21, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sonnenberg

[edit]

So now we have two Sonnenberg pages ... the one I wrote (with the proper title -- it's "Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion ..." not "Sonnenberg Mansion and Gardens", and the one you insist on reverting. I've cleaned up the article, fixed grammar, organized it better, added a couple of additional bits of information that were not there before. How is this a violation of Wiki rules? (For example, let's say "The United States of America" page was originally written as "America, United States of". Woudn't we want to correct the header?) So now, what? Do I propse a merge of the two pages? Your response respectfully requested. CPAScott 11:10, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and by the way, by deleting the page I created, you wiped out all of my new edits and improvements.

OK, I understand based on your response on my page, but I question whether I'm savvy enough to understand how to download and operate the MediaWiki software. It is not an executable file and seems to require more technical knowledge that the average layman has. I'll do some quick research in the MediaWiki FAQ first, but I might need to request that someone with more technical skill do this for me. Is there a mechanism to request such actions? CPAScott 11:22, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
FireFox, I understand now. Mission accomplished. Can you return my modifications to the article now? Gracias. CPAScott 13:40, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Purple star

[edit]
The Purple Star given to Wikipedians who have been hurt by others, for example by having their user pages vandalised, being mistakenly blocked (for too long, or affected by range blocks), being personally attacked, etc.
We seem to take this in our stride and treat it as if it's part and parcel of the role, even though it really shouldn't have to be. What's that well known quote - "my only regret is not being able to reach over the internet and choke people"... :) --Alf melmac 21:32, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In a related matter, don't you think you shoukd semi-protect your user page? --LorianTC 22:08, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the timely reversion of that vandalism to my userpage. I really couldn't resist putting the warning below after your testing time. --Alf melmac 23:47, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oi, Spiderman, NO!

[edit]
No climbing the Reichstag dressed as Spiderman
You have been spotted climbing the Reichstag building dressed as Spiderman. At least one editor has reported this behavior as being in relation to a content dispute. As clearly stated in WP:NCR, you may not climb the Reichstag building dressed as Spiderman in order to campaign over a content dispute. This is your last warning. If you climb any further up, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia.

Please do not erase this warning. Doing so is not considered vandalism. :D Alf melmac 22:26, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks.

[edit]

Thanks for reverting my little vandal friend. I wonder why people always attack my sexual orientation (and never get it right - bi isn't gay, and it doesn't mean ..etc.). People see what they want to see and attack that :\ — Nathan (talk) / 22:55, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked from editing

[edit]

Hi, I've just got a message saying I am blocked from editing because my IP has been used by use "EccentricRichard". This is ironic because I wasn't trying to edit anything anyway and secondly because I'm not EccentricRichard (ER). My user name is Warsatugger, although you may call me Chris. Unlike ER who apparently lives in Surrey, I live in Slovakia. I've only ever editied a page about Robert Mugabe, and haven't done that for a couple of months so would be grateful if you unblocked me. All very curious. Thanks, Chris. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Warsawtugger (talkcontribs)

Hi. Thanks for protecting the 2002 Gujarat Violence article. I was having a lot of trouble fending off the POV and racist bigotry. Now, hopefully a civilized discussion will take place. Much appreciated.Netaji 12:20, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Clay County,Texas edit wasn't a test

[edit]

My Category:Clay County,Texas edit wasn't a test. It's incorrectly spelled, and the correctly spelled Category:Clay County, Texas already exists. The only page in the improperly spelled cat was already in the correctly spelled cat. I'm trying to list it on WP:CFD, but WP is slow right now. 24.241.227.201 13:22, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Adminship
Thank you for contributing to my my request for adminship. Although I wasn't promoted to admin status, with a withdrawn vote count of 14/27/14, I am very happy with the response I received from my fellow Wikipedians. I was pleasantly suprised at the support, and was touched by it. I will also work harder on preventing disputes and keeping cool under stress. Hopefully I will re-apply soon and try again for the mop. Thanks again, Highway Return to Oz... 13:33, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I like your current sig. How do you make the date appear in a slightly different format? Regards, alphaChimp laudare 14:55, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. That might be hard to get used to. Out of interest, btw, do you think my current sig is any good? (Or do you have any suggestions?) alphaChimp laudare 15:00, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

I want to give you a personal thank you for being the very first person to support my successful RfA. It is nice to know I am trusted by so many people I haven't ever really met. I hope to live up to what seems to me to be the high bar of 84 supports that I received. Please let me know if at any time you feel I'm not making it over.—WAvegetarian(talk) 18:28, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MFD?

[edit]

I came across this page whilst RCPing, but can't decide whether it's a candidate for MFD or not- the user's only edits seem to be to the page itself, and it reads more like an article than a talk page.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Regards,

I would say it could be worth MfD'ing – it might end up getting speedied, but I don't see why not. That's what MfD is there for :) — FireFox (talk) 17:23, 31 July '06

3RR Warning

[edit]

You warned me for reverting. I accept this, I did not realize. I am sorry. I cam across a cabal of people who think they own the big brother australia page and keep reverting my pertinent information for no reason. Please do not block me. I am giving up now. I will let them have thier little run of the palace. Do not worry. I wont even bother.--0000001 17:45, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nobody owns any articles, but I'm sorry if I in any way discouraged you from editing Wikipedia articles in future. I explained my reason for reverting your edit in the edit summary, and have left a message on your talk page further explaining my actions. —JD[don't talk|email] 17:47, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
