Stubstuff

Thank you for your assistance in the rationale that gotten rid of this stub cat.

I was wondering if you could assist me on several articles related to kurds. I'll summarise the general picture.

There are several rebelions portrayed as independent (and failed) nations. At least one of these "nations" lasted only 2 months... An example is kingdom of Kurdistan. There are lots of problematic edits such as this one: [1]

Category:Kurdistan is being used to tag random provinces. Basicaly people are drawing the borders of kurdistan using categories. Also existing sub categories appear to be useless. Three of the five sub categories have virtualy a handfull (less than 5) articles

Articles like Turkish Kurdistan and Syrian Kurdistan are highly problematic. If you look at the articles youll see kurdistan is not treated like a geographic region or like a cultural region but for info regarding an independence movement and/or how much kurds are opressed and why they should have a nation of their own.

I have pov on the matter thats why I need objective input.

Thanks Cat chi? 09:34, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cool Cat - to be honest I probably don't know enough about the situation there to feel comfortable trying to sort those articles out - I'd probably go blundering in and treading on toes all over the place. It would definitely be worthwhile listing the problems on WP:AN - there are likely to be admins who know enough about Kurdistan that they'd be able to deal with the situation far better than I can. I just know that - like Macedonia - the nature of the name depends very much on who you are talking to. Grutness...wha? 23:12, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I understand, but as a sanity check I'd like to know what you think on the following points:
  • Macedonia is an existing country, kurdistan is not. The borders are determined by who you are talking to.
  • The parties in discussion say Kurdistan is just a geographic region (it is the only geographic region with an ethnicity present in its name I think). However articles talk about the regions economy, history, displays a flag, failed independence attempts... Topic is completely restricted to kurds.
  • I dont mind an article talking about kurds. We have Kurdish people for that. I am not certain whats approporate for Kurdistan. Take a look at the not so contraversial Scandinavia and compare it with Kurdistan.
  • Acording to people writing the article kurdistan is divided to 4 parts. I don't think they are explaining a geographic region.
  • Turkish Kurdistan
    • Turkey does not recognise such a thing
    • kurds do not even have a defacto goverment
    • this article is complete pov, even sourced since it doesnt exist
  • Syrian Kurdistan
    • Syria does not recognise such a thing
    • kurds do not even have a defacto goverment
    • this article is complete pov, even sourced since it doesnt exist
  • Iranian Kurdistan
    • I dont know much but I am sure the iranian goverment didn't hand over political control
    • article does not talk about a federal structure either
  • Iraqi Kurdistan
    • Kurdish Autonomous Region is been turned into a state as Iraq is now a 3 state federal nation now. However this hasnt been ratified hence this is just a proposal
    • There was a defacto goverment in the region since the first gulf war
    • such a thing should have a seperate article as being an iraqi state, not as part of being kurdistan and not being restricted to kurds.

Re: < symbol after # pages

I plan to convert all of these to <#### with the big numbers in bold. The less than symbol is needed to tell my bot where the end of the string is.(so that it can put a new number in) If it is not there my bot will pull in all lines untll it finds <.(this can be changed to another symbol, but I don't see why)

To sum up what I said, There will be no more # of pages instead there will be <####. This is not prejuduce on my part, as much as it is just easier to program. Respond on my page.Eagle (talk) (desk) 18:55, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Preferred use of Virginia-geo-stub?

Grutness, please help a clueless newbie... I've got questions about your recent edits to the stub templates that I added to several stub articles I wrote (part of a personal effort to add all historic districts in Arlington County, Virginia, USA to Wikipedia). See, e.g., your edit to Prospect Hill (Arlington, Virginia).

I understand why you replaced my use of struct-sub with the more specific U.S.-struct-sub (thanks!).

However, you also eliminated the Virginia-geo-stub I used. Is this because the geo-stub and its subcategories are only for geographic features, and sites of historic houses (even when those houses no longer stand on site) don't qualify? If that's the reason, how are geographic features defined? Clearly they must include natural features (e.g. rivers, mountains). Do they include political geography (e.g. towns, counties)? What about properties that may include structures but are also comprised of natural or man-made geography (e.g. ranches, canals)?

I'm happy to conform with preferred usage. (Indeed, I've got some similar uses of the Virginia-geo-stub on Fort Ethan Allen (Arlington, Virginia) and Fort Albany (Arlington, Virginia) that I'm prepared to remove if necessary.) I only added the Virginia-geo-stub because I thought my stub articles were more likely to attract the help of Wikipedians who cared about Virginia than from Wikipedians who care about U.S. structures.

Thanks in advance for filling me in.

Politician-stubs monitoring

Hi Grutness. As you know, I've been trying to create some kind of order in the politician-stub categories, so I've created a new subpage tracking them for potential splits. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any really good lists carving up Africa into smaller segments, so my list is basically a ripoff from one of your old lists regarding the geo-stubs (I've modified the text and the European and Caucasus categories). I really hope that you don't mind, but I figured that my time was better spent counting stubs than designing something clever. I haven't done the counts for all the subcategories yet, but I have done most of them. Besides, I figured that if we one day start splitting up Africa into smaller fragments, it would be nice with consistency between the politician-stubs and the geo-stubs. I still don't know if it will be necessary, but it's always nice to have the option. Again, I hope you don't mind the ripoff, if you do, I'll redesign the page or kill it asap. Best regards. --Valentinian (talk) 12:39, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure it is a good idea at all to split the African continent into segments (yet) but I'd like to keep the possibility open. It is a lot easier doing counts of 200 stubs from 6 countries than 700 from 40 nations. My main motivation is to see a consistent system for both the geo-stubs, the politician-stubs, and any other type of stub. So if the geo-stubs are to be re-arranged, I'll naturally change my system accordingly. Best regards. --Valentinian (talk) 13:43, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Btw, Israel, Iran, Iran, and Japan all have their own stubs now. They were among the ones Carabineri and I split off recently. --Valentinian (talk) 13:47, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You are right about Bermuda (grin). Hmm, being a politician on Bermuda sounds kinda nice: You're paid by the public purse, the workload can't be too hard, and the beach is close by (sounds like any politician's ultimate dream.) Definitely better than Denmark, we've been freezing for the last three months. Valentinian (talk) 00:33, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

cuba stubs

Dear Grutness,
Congrats on your exhibition. I would totally go, if you come to New Jersey, USA. How can you tell how many Cuba-stubs are out there? You're saying it's close to 65 - did you count them by hand? One of your babies needs help

Iran-geo-stub to be exact. It's acting screwy, in the sense that none of the articles stubbed with it are being added to the relevant category. I belive this has something to do with an anon. vandal, but I can't see the problem in the script. Aelfthrytha 22:12, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

cyprus-geo-stub

I have created this stub because in the category cyprus stubs there was a template which was saying: "This category is maintained by WikiProject: Stub sorting. Please propose new stub categories here before creating fresh categories and templates." I just followed this instruction. Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals Personally I have purposed this stub (i was 81.4.163.134) but unfortunatelly my purpose was deleted by the rever of User:Bruce1ee.

As for wikiproject, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting and then see how big is cyprus stub, which is a mess. (User:KRBN Talk?) 11:34, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, and yeah it will be useful to keep track of how things are going, its certainly going to get bigger for a while at least, although some of the really well known places are slowly growing out of stub level, by far there are more articles with no article at all yet. Biography stubs sorting

Do you think it would be a good idea to sort biography stubs according to the "Family Name, Given Name" format? That line in the templates can be written as or (instead of ). — Instantnood 18:38, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's probably a very good idea - I'll add it to the suggestions at WP:WSS/P for debate. Grutness...wha? 01:08, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mr. Dignan. I recently noticed your contributions to the stub issues related to all cities and locations of Kosovo. I am not sure your contributions would calm down the tension that already exists between the parties involved in the dispute. As much as I respect your professionalism, and your determination to comply to the Wiki rules, I would encourage you to think of compromising solutions when dealing with sensitive topics. As far as stub issue is concerned, for the topic I am addressing, I would suggest you initiate a "stub" modification for disputed territories, and not instead fuel up the tensions by following some rules, which are temporary always. Regards, Ilir pz 15:05, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

replied here. Grutness...wha?
Thanks for taking the time to reply in detail. Again, I must tell you the solution you came up with does not satisfy 90% of the population of the region you are talking about. I don't blame you for not being able to. You were right when saying that there are no perfect solutions for any of the issues related to Balkans. Yet, if there is a territory, such as Kosovo, when not everything is confusing like some think, one should provide a rather different solution to the dispute. Kosovo has clear borders, like Montenegro that you mentioned. It has all but a seat in UN, and an army, for the rest it has nothing less than a country has. Not to load you with useless info, I still think a compromise which would not irritate 90% of the population of that territory would have been more fair, than saying something like Kosovo stub is a subsection of Country that tried to exterminate 90% of Kosovo's population stub which sounds horrible to me as a citizen of that territory. Morality should prevail over fixed Wiki rules. That makes Wikipedia a more respected environment. My best regards, Ilir pz 22:46, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps we'll need to revisit the whole problem to try to find a better solution. See also my comment to RobertG below. Grutness...wha? 03:57, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. To give you a heads up, Hipi_Zhdripi (talkcontribs) asked me to look into your deletion of Kosovo-geo-stub. I investigated, and am certainly not willing to reinstate it as he requests (I have responded on his/her talk page), because it seems to have been deleted within policy and process. I think I also ought to point out to you that the similar stub template, Kosovo-stub, which it seems was also deleted through SFD, has also been reinstated. Since you are obviously familiar with the case (and I do not frequent SFD), you may want to take a look at this one, too. Best wishes, --RobertGtalk 16:57, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. Kosovo-stub was deleted as a separate stub and is now used basically as a redirect to Serbia-stub (not quite, but it feeds the same category, Category:Serbia stubs. Perhaps this would also have been a better solution for Kosovo-geo-stub. I'll have a word over at WP:WSS/P. It seems that much of the problem in this is with one specific user, although there may be others similarly aggrieved. Grutness...wha? 03:57, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kosovo-geo-stub

May I ask you wat do you know about Kosovo. How you came to this conclusen. Do you know wat is meanyn Serbia, SR Serbia, Republic Serbia, SAP Kosovo, Kosovo or samthing like this. You wont to talle me that you have disedet the best way in wich (exp) you put the Provinc of the Ukraina under the Russian stub, or the land of Germany under the Bavaria-stub orr Schlehien (in Poland) under the German stub only because the Schlechien is not regotnaiset from UN. See the rez. 1244. See the deklaraion of the UN abot the Kosov provic during admiistrative time in Kosovo. Don intepret that only wat is written ther at the and see the change of the name from Yugoslavia to Serbia and Montenegro. You must be neutral and see the cronologie of the documents. They are all acceptyt from UN--Hipi Zhdripi 16:39, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Did you have asked your self way in en:Wikipedia are souch a small number of Kosovars, only becose they think that this project is not neutral and is ocupetit from Serbian Goverment propaganda. Your solution is maken a bad image of Wikipedia and is not neutral. Your solution is a same if you have putit the Kosovo artikel under the Albanian flag and stub. (If you do that and protec this teory that the Kosovo is a Albanian land no serbian user dont wont to be a part of en:Wikipedia) --Hipi Zhdripi 16:49, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See the selection: Districts of Kosovo--Hipi Zhdripi 18:03, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see it. Read the line on it "Province of Serbia (Serbia and Montenegro)", which exactly explains the reasons for what has been done. Also read RobertG's response above, and my comments on Ilir pz's talk page. It is important for Wikipedia to maintain a neutral point of view. The stub-sorting WikiProkject is doing its best to do just that - whereas your comments don't seem to indicate that your own viewpoint is particularly neutral. Grutness...wha? 03:47, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why are all the Kosovo towns being deleted?

It seems that you edited these articles and now they are being deleted. I am fairly new. Perhaps you can explain this to me?

Not a single Kosovan town stub has been deleted by me, nor is there any intention of any being deleted. If any have been it is vandalism and they should be restored. All that has been deleted is the template which was placed on the bottom of those articles, which was incorrectly recreated after having been deleted in December. I just now went back a few steps and sure enough some didnt work before, and its related to that use of comma in Courtenay's case, as well as its normally named article, it had an erroneous page created with a comma at the end of the article name, and i suspect that caused the problem, but dont understand how Lambton decided to work after your and my edits. The cool thing is it works fine now and we just need to begin those other articles. I kinda wished i hadnt started the 'x Quarter' set of articles now, but i do believe they are a part of the real life structure (beyond my control), and must be included here. and yeah.. good luck with your exhibition, if i can find out where it is i can decide if i can go.. lol.. i look forward to my first one and especially to my sons first one. cheers.. moza 14:14, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. As far as the streets are concerned, since none of the streets is world famous and all are likely to be the names of streets in other cities, having them at "XXX, Wellington" makes sense for the names. As to my exhibition, a lot of the paintings in it are shown on my website here and here, if you're interested. Grutness...wha? 00:48, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uffington White Horse

hey grutness did you get to see the Earth From Above exhibition up here in Wellington? The artist presented an awesome image of the Uffington White Horse, along with all the other truly awesome images. Its listed in the Festival of the Arts sites and their are location thumbnails (Waitangi Park) on my site. and no i cant get to Dunedin, sorry. We have been spoiled for choices last few weeks.moza 14:24, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, didn't get to that (I don't get to Wgn that often, unfortunately - a shame, since I like the city and would have liked to have seen the exhibition). FWIW, if there are any wikipedians interested, my exhibition's at the Moray Gallery on Princes Street and runs until the 30th. Grutness...wha? 00:53, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mount Tongariro image

Grutness, thanks for the adjustments to the Mount Tongariro listing. The article shows a beautiful picture of Mt. Nguarahoe, but the image NAME is Tongariro.jpg. the picture is in fact of Mount Ngauruhoe, NOT Tongariro. The same image, wronly named, is used for the Mount Ngauruhoe listing. Note that the CAPTION for the image correctly identifies Mount Ngauruhoe in both articles. But perhaps the Mount Tongariro article should have a picture of Mount Tongariro, not Mount Ngauruhoe?

I am a newby to Wikipedia and do not know how to make this kind of correction, since it invovles renaming a file on a server somewhere, not editing code.

Mauerkreis 22:33, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but that is Tongariro. The photo was taken from the north, between Papakai and Lake Rotaira, which is why it doesn't appear to have its characteristic shape. Grutness...wha? 05:41, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oops - confusion! The pic of Tongariro is Image:Tongariro.jpg - the one of Ngauruhoe is Image:MountTongariro.jpg. I'll see what I can do. Grutness...wha? 05:46, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bodgie

Grutness I'd like to set a seperate page for 'Bodgie' but I believe you have redirected it to 'Greasers'. I have nothing against this except there is now no where for the australian phenomenon to be separately discussed. Could you please make the sperate 'bodgie' page availible? Im not smart enough to do it myself. There is a rich australian tradition to be represented. Along with widgies, sharps, mods, rockers, etc etc.Lentisco 03:07, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanx. I was ignorant about NZ use of the word. Fascinating. I can recommend the novel 'A bunch of ratbags' which concerns the bodgie life in Footscray, Melbourne in the 50s. Lentisco 00:49, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A curious admin action by you

I wonder if you would be willing to comment on my question and JesseW's answer at Wikipedia Talk:Proposed deletion#Disappearing deletions? I prodded a page, it was deleted, and then you silently restored it but didn't restore my original prod edit. I imagine you probably had a good reason for the restoration, but the way you did it seems unnecessarily confusing. Thanks (and good luck with your opening, sorry to add to your stress). · rodii · 13:38, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(later) I seem to have draw the ire of at least one other person by asking this question, and I don't want to piss anyone else off, so let me assure you I was just trying to figure out what the reasoning was, not to start a fight. Hope you understand that. Cheers. · rodii · 22:39, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying this. (And I have to say, irrelevantly, after checking out your user page and your website, that I am now your biggest fan--or at least we share an awful lot of musical interests. I would leave off the Sisters of Mercy and Midnight Oil and lean a little more to the Radio Birdman side of Australian music, but otherwise, wow.) · rodii · 02:29, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Catlins

The Catlins, Tautuku image

I'm glad you like the photo. I have a few more from the Catlins that I'm not sure whether to add, but I'll try some out over the next day or two. Feel free to remove any that you feel aren't helpful. -- Avenue 13:55, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I also thought that a photo of one of the towns would be nice, but unfortunately I don't have any. Thanks for lightening up the photos; that's definitely improved the Tautuku Bay one, although I'm not so sure about the cave shot. That was always intended to have low detail inside the cave, and lightening it seems to have washed out the background. The people there highlight the tourism aspect for me. So I'm considering changing it back. I'm hoping to fill in a couple of the redlinks too. -- Avenue 05:13, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The article does look a lot better. Unfortunately I have a real-world deadline tomorrow, but I will have a good look through it during the weekend. -- Avenue 12:00, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn't take any photos of the Nugget Point lighthouse. (My remaining shots are mainly of wildlife, and I think we have enough for that section already.) But I have found a photo available under a CC-BY 2.0 license, which I think means we can use it. I've added it to the article. -- Avenue 13:14, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've looked further into the licensing for the lighthouse photo, as well as Wikipedia/Wikimedia policies, and I'm pretty sure we can use it as long as its authorship is credited (which I failed to do in our article). I have now done this; thanks for prompting me to look into it. The issue with the penguin photo was whether the uploader had the right to put it under the GFDL - a very different problem.
I'd be happy for the article to be nominated soon. In spite of AndyZ's suggestion, I think that the Natural History section shouldn't come last. Maybe I'm thinking too much like a tourist, but I'd be happier if we swapped it with the Government section. What do you think?
I hope your exhibition went well, by the way.-- Avenue 13:47, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone ahead and moved the Natural History and Government sections to where I think they should go. Feel free to revert if you think this is inappropriate. -- Avenue 02:55, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
They're probably OK there - we'll see when it gets to FAC. And thanks, the exhibition went well. Good reviews in a caouple of newspapers and general good comments from the people who saw it. Not as many sales as I'd hoped, but enough to cover costs, which is the main thing. Grutness...wha? 09:13, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad it went well. Sorry about the footnotes - that never occurred to me. I guess I've got used to the <references /> system. Thanks for fixing it up. -- Avenue 14:34, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Polynesian AFDs

polynesian article deletions

Hi Grutness, The discussion about the mass deletions is getting rather long and involved. I think some of these items can be saved and have been working at cleaning them up. So far, please see my new versions (with sourcing) of Ahoeitu, Aremata-Popoa and Aremata-Rorua, Bulotu, and Ilaheva. I can find nothing about: Atonga, Auahi-Turoa, Avaiki Tautau, Eau and do not object to their deletion. I will try to report back here and add to the list of keeps/deletes. Best Bucketsofg 01:39, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

polynesian again

Thanks for your note. I'll get in touch with Kahuroa. Your comments seem to suggest that you have second thoughts of the mass deletion. As nominator of record, it would be a simple thing for you to pull the nomination. Then we can sort the items out a few at a time by prodding them. Bucketsofg 01:58, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your second note. I see what you mean about the PROD process. Your suggestion of individual renominations seems best. Bucketsofg 03:44, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers for your comment and your proposal. I am happy with the versions that Bucketsofg has produced of some of these because he has managed to remove the objectionable parts from them. Kahuroa 07:17, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since we have discussed something similar. What do you think of the tagging of random Turkish provinces with this category? Please note that there has been no offical recognition of such a claim. Cat chi? 16:00, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cool Cat - to be honest, I'd rather not get any further involved in this - my argumants with regard to the stub category weren't based on any political views on my part, simply on standard stub sorting practice. I know too little about the political issues involved in the area to support either side over the other in general terms. Grutness...wha? 01:39, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The main poblem is no one knows anything about it, however people are quick to keep the category. The issue has little to do with politics but is more about people drawing the borders of the proposed country by using categories. I can understand why admins evade pov arguments but there is more to this than just my pov. If I were to tag Paris France under a Category:Germany this would be a violation of WP:POINT and I would be blockded (rightfully), I'd like this category to be treated the same. Cat chi? 06:13, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Mm. I see what you mean. I'd suggest posting about it on WP:AN - chances are you'd get two or three admins there who do know a little about it and who haven't already put themselves offside with one side of the argument via SFD. I'm just concerned that - having already weighed in on the subject there, to do the same elsewhere will make it look like I am on one clear side in this (which I'm not - I can understand both sides of the argument). Certainly something needs to be done to make sure that Wikipedia doesn't appear to be supporting Kurdish independence via stealth. ISTR something similar has happened in the past with articles relating to Macedonia and "Macedonian Greece", so there are admins with expertise on this sort of topic. Grutness...wha? 06:25, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I did post it to the ANB already which got me no real response. I even rfced one of the person involved which also got me nowhere so far even though the party in question does not know english.
I clearly understand your standing. You dont want to appear to be taking sides but I think that is exactly why people are hesitant in interfereing with this kind of behaviour which is why it is continuing.
I mean take a look at the case of vote stacking on Turkish Kurdistan's vfd, an obvious pov fork. Why was it not treated the same as Syrian Kurdistan? The VfD ended unconclusively with the help of the 15 extra votes gathered. I suspect admins were hesitant to touch it in fear of accusations of "Anti-Kuridsh" POV.
Cat chi? 08:56, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I really am growing tired in my lonelyness in dealing with these people. They want to tag territory of a "geographic region" at their whim. Might I add a highly contraversial region. They are highly problematic and I really do not want to deal with them alone. So I am asking you to help me or shoot me. I really am desperate. Cat chi? 17:41, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for intervening here, but I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the Category:Kurdistan has recently been nominated for deletion, and it was decided to keep the category. When the results seemed clear CoolCat stated: "So no I dont care about this vote at all. I have no reason to keep nonsense like this on wikipedia, I will eventualy get it deleted, watch me" Please see Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2006_March_3#Category:Kurdistan. This post could seem to be an attempt to get an administrators backing to sabotaging a previous taken decision. Bertilvidet 13:26, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Please see the discussion at Category talk:Kurdistan (Which articles should have the tag 'Category:Kurdistan'), and weigh-in if you like. Thanks, --Moby 13:57, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A Lawson question

Hi Grutness, I hope the exhibition is going well.

There has been a question at the talk page for the Gore, New Zealand article about a statement at the end of the article that a church in East Gore was designed by Robert Lawson. I have asked Giano who added the information, but he only knew about it from this article in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography. I know you have been contributing to the Lawson article, and since you are on the ground I was wondering if you could confirm or disprove my assumption that the building refered to is the old East Gore Presbyterian Church? Blarneytherinosaur 00:23, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

After having a look myself I have managed to find this article about the current use of the East Gore Presbyterian Church and a photo, which confirm that it is indeed the work of Robert Lawson. I know I have already asked you to get one photo for me, but I was wondering if you think it is worth getting a photo of for the Gore article, or the Lawson article, or both? There's no rush, but if you have a reason to be near Gore it might be worth looking into. Feel free to let me know if there is anything I can do in return. Blarneytherinosaur 01:03, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your confirmation and help, Grutness. I'll post a request on the New Zealand Wikipedians' notice board ASAP. Blarneytherinosaur 07:47, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Grutness. Thanks for your note on my page. I'm very pleased in the end with how the whole Polynesian thing worked out. You recently did a revert on Saint (Christopher Saint). That's not necessarily a bad thing, but now there's something of a mess. Basically, Harlie8304 (talk · contribs) created a large number of articles promoting Christopher Booth a/k/a Saint. After some editing, his psuedonyms were redirected to Christopher Saint. Then Christopher Saint was deleted per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Christopher_Saint. This left some hanging redirects. With the redirect gone, you just resurrected a copy of a deleted article. So I just marked Saint (Christopher Saint) for speedy delete per CSD 4. --John Nagle 04:19, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In the second paragraph, does the size or shape of the harbour cause a large difference between high & low tide? I think not. It would be the same no matter what the size or shape of the harbour was. Prod: Trev

Hi there. I've added the "prod" template to the article Trev, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Importance). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree, discuss the issues raised at Talk:Trev. If you remove the prod template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Fluit 01:14, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just a thought. The NZE article contains a long list of words, a lot of them old-fashioned 1950s, 1960s, 1970s slang etc. Or even recent slang like 'sup'(not even NZ - North American I think). Not very encyclopedic. Is slang even of interest or relevance in an article like this? Too fluid and ever changing I'd have thought. Unless the article was 'NZ slang' or something! Is there any strategy you can think of to stop people creating these pointless lists? Some cunning way to format the article that would help prevent this kind of thing? What if there was a short list that looked kinda complete in some way (or table maybe - harder to edit, therefore offputting?). Same goes for article MIoNZE. Kahuroa 10:03, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just to butt in a little, but I was thinking that one of these days I'd print off the page, and go through a copy of Orsman's Dictionary of NZE. Stuff that's not there clearly goes, but also try to gatekeep a bit on out-dated stuff. But perhaps also keep stuff which retains an interesting story of origin. It would, of course, be a lot easier if I had a copy, but people keep buying me every other dictionary with NZ and Oxford in the title. I should have bought it myself when I had the chance... --Limegreen 10:50, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's definitely a good idea to go through them (with both Orsman's and the Heinemann NZE Dictionary, if poss) - a lot of them are dated (some of them may be worthy of separate entries on Wiktionary, but virtually none deserve them on Wikipedia). How about splitting that list out as a separate article with a link to it in the New Zealand English article? It wouldn't solve the problem of the list growing long and problematical, but at least it will keep it out of the main New Zealand English article. Grutness...wha? 01:51, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orsman edited the Heinemann, so I assume that most of that content would have been included in the later work, which really is quite extensive. However, if someone has a copy of the Heinemann, it would be a good start. I'm OK with a separate list. --Limegreen 02:28, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I guess a separate list is a solution of sorts, or at least a relocation of the problem. I bit like what I did by starting the article Maori influence on New Zealand English. I think we need to keep an eye on it and weed out anything off the topic. Random thoughts: - Every dialect of English has its own slang and its own ways of saying things - so what, that's how language works. What makes something relevant to NZE article? Not the mere fact that it is different, but that it tells the reader something - that it exemplifies a point made in the article. Or that it tells the reader something about NZ itself or NZers? Kahuroa 12:17, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Good points all. And ones that need debating - preferably at Talk: New Zealand English! :) Grutness...wha? 08:03, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Guitar knowledge needed!

I've come across the following submission on Articles for creation. As you have the guitar infobox, I thought you could help. Do you know if the practice of pick tapping exists and if it does, can you provide references for this? - Mgm|(talk) 11:21, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pick tapping is a technique wherein the side of the guitar pick is used to fret notes on the guitar neck. It is very similar to finger tapping except the pick is used, rather than the finger.

Pick tapping can give a cleaner sound than finger tapping, but it is harder to add vibrato to the tapped note than with the finger.

Generally, it is also easier to tap more rapidly with the pick than the finger. An example of this can be heard near the beginning of the Randy Rhoads guitar solo on the Blizzard of Ozz's Crazy Train where rapid taps on the G string are performed while the left hand is slowly bending and releasing a fretted note lower down on the string. This gives an effect similar to that of a whammy bar being depressed and released. - Mgm|(talk) 11:21, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
