Ok, so on the page for Amoeboid, there's this sentence: "The former is basically a giant multinucleate amoeba, while the latter lives solitary until food runs out; in which a colony of these functions as a unit." This doesn't make any sense, and at the very least is punctuated incorrectly. But I don't know what the original author was trying to say. What should I do? How can I flag this particular sentence?

@Bkfunk, I would fix it as you know best, or try a tool like http://wikipedia.ramselehof.de/wikiblame.php to find the change, and talk to the user who made the change.

Hm. I wish there were a way to flag certain phrases/sections as unclear, such that any user who had edited that section would be notified.

@Bkfunk, you can put [citation needed] by adding {{citation needed}} right after the paragraph in question, which will put it in a queue for people who want to go fix citations, but thats a bit different, If you can't figure out the original author's intent, i would just recommend rewriting yourself, you could copy the original text into the talk page so that its preserved, in case they come back and want to rewrite it themselves.

Feedback needed on using special characters

Hello. Thank you for using VisualEditor! Having editors use it is the best way for the Wikimedia Foundation to develop it into the best tool it can be.

While we always welcome general feedback (please report any issues in Bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product or drop your feedback on the central feedback page on MediaWiki.org), the developers are especially interested right now in feedback on the special character inserter. This new tool is used for inserting special characters (including symbols like , IPA pronunciation symbols, mathematics symbols, and characters with diacritics). It is intended to help people whose computers do not have good character inserters. For example, many Mac users prefer to use the extensive "Special Characters..." tool present at the bottom of the Edit menu in all applications or to learn the keyboard shortcuts for characters like ñ and ü.

The current version of the special characters tool in VisualEditor is very simple and very basic. It will be getting a lot of work in the coming weeks and months. It does not contain very many character sets at this time. (The specific character sets can be customized at each Wikipedia, so that each project could have a local version with the characters it wants.) But the developers want your ideas at this early stage about ways that the overall concept could be improved. I would appreciate your input on this question, so please try out the character inserter and tell me what changes to the design would (or would not!) best work for you.

This is the ⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽ inserter as it appears on many wikis. (Some may have customized it.) Your feedback on this tool is particularly important.

Issues you might consider:

  • How often do you normally use Wikipedia's character inserters?
  • Which character sets are useful to you? Should it include all 18 of the character sets provided in the wikitext editor's newer toolbar at the English Wikipedia, the 10 present in the older editor toolbar, or some other combination of character sets?
  • How many special characters would you like to see at one time?
    • Should there be a "priority" or "favorites" section for the 10 or 12 characters that most editors need most often? Is it okay if you need an extra click to go beyond the limited priority set?
    • How should the sections be split up? Should they be nested? Ordered?
    • How should the sections be navigated? Should there be a drop-down? A nested menu?
  • The wikitext editor has never included many symbols and characters, like and . Do you find that you need these missing characters? If the character inserter in VisualEditor includes hundreds or thousands of special characters, will it be overwhelming? How will you find the character you want? What should be done for users without enough space to display more than a few dozen characters?
  • Should the character inserter be statically available until dismissed? Should it hover near the mouse? Should it go away on every selection or 10 seconds after a selection with no subsequent ones?
  • Some people believe that the toolbar already has too many options—how would you simplify it?

The developers are open to any thoughts on how the special character inserter can best be developed, even if this requires significant changes. Please leave your views on the central feedback page, or, if you'd prefer, you can contact me directly on my talk page. It would be really helpful if you can tell me how frequently you need to use special characters in your typical editing and what languages or other special characters are important to you.

Something to consider

Hi,

I was just reading this article on how to make Wikipedia more readable and I really liked the way it finally appeared. The overall look was simple, elegant and more futuristic and less in the 2000s as people sometimes consider Wikipedia to be.

Please do look at it, and see if we can actually implement some of these suggestions. It would be a real major improvement if WIkipedia does end up looking this good.

Unable to comment on Community Design Trello board

Nicereddy, ugh, annoying, I just did some research and it looks like trello has changed their product a bit, and made it impossible for users without accounts to make cards (only comment and vote) I've changed the settings, and you can now make a free account on trello to start adding cards to the board, you can use an email and password or google login. If I can figure out a better way I'll let you know and update the instruction on the Design page. I also did a quick hack, more work for me but thats ok, comment on an existing placeholder card and I'll make it a top level card. Jared Zimmerman (talk) 03:18, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi Jared--sorry that I reverted you. I'm following the AfD and it seems pretty clear that the more unlinked (or redlinked) entries there are, the more likely it is that the list as a whole will be deleted. First order of business, it seems to me, is to save this list. Second order of business is to expand it, obviously, but consensus across the project appears to be that for lists it's better to write them first and then add them, rather than add redlinks and then see if they turn blue. Drmies, There were a few list items that had articles already, that simply hadn't been linked, in your rush to delete everything that wasn't linked I now lost the items which had articles already which had not been linked, I appreciate your intention, but a ping might have been useful prior to the removal of the data, or shifting a version to Draft: namespace… Jared Zimmerman (talk) 03:50, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Drmies, you're not understanding, when I manually went through the list, item by item I discovered a couple items that already had articled on en.wiki, that just had not be linked yet, since you reverted my changed completely you lost this information. This is your edit. I went through every item. You added four entries with blue links; I did not count how many red links or links to wikis in other languages you added--dozens, at least. One you added was Coosje van Bruggen, who was already in the article (correctly, under B), another was Thelma Thomas, whose article redirects to Thelma Afford, and she does not appear to be an art historian. So that leaves, in that massive edit, two valid, bluelinked additions: Joanna Woodall and Sylvia Williams.

Now, I don't want to make this personal at all, but I've been here for a while, and I think I know what those list articles should look like, and how to make an article survive an AfD discussion. So far I'm doing pretty well in that discussion and in the article, I think, and there is no need to put anything in Draft user space since this is Wikipedia: nothing is lost. Responsively sized images

Hi,

I came across your

"... eventually I'd love for us to move to responsively sized images..."

mentioned in passing (totally agree btw) and thought I should drop you a line.

This can be achieved with just a bit of css to get around wikimarkup's current idiotic thumbnail approach. See it in a "crude" form over on Wikisource HERE (uses s:Template:FreedImg in addition to defining some css classes). You can resize your browser window or adjust your browser settings all day long and the images will dynamically resize themselves accordingly.

The only downside was the wait some folks had at first in order to load images at their actual dimensions - which is now pretty much moot thanks to MediaViewer doing the same. Prost -- George Orwell III (talk) 14:28, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

George Orwell III, Perhaps you could comment on the bug? or even begin writing a patch for this? I think we'll have to have some intelligence around making sure images only take up half the width of the content body section, with a max width of 350px and a minimum width of ??? We'll want to make sure that the images switch to full width when we hit a tablet or phone breakpoint, or in the case of panoramic images on desktop, which should be responsive but also allow for full width. Meh. Beside the fact I've forgotten which throw-away email account I registered under at Bugzilla, there is really not much else to it other than having the CSS definitions in place site-wide. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to make exactly what you've described a reality for both workstations & mobile devices - its just a bit beyond my skillset is all. I had hoped spreading it this limited first-step around would inspire a solution to the various agent-to-device issues; the recent MediaViewer fiasco presented an opportunity to float our premise again which is the real reason I spoke up here (fwiw, Pete Forsyth seems to think this has possibilities too).

I should also make it clear that one would not be likely to be able to "fix" the current image thumbnail scheme. As it stands now, the current approach needs to be circumvented altogether and have 'the normal' HTML block & inline element behavior [re]applied to work as expected again thru the reinforcements defined via CSS. No .php, no .js, no nothing-else needed - just the ability to have multiple inline elements (SPAN, A, & finally IMG) inherit width & height dimensions from their parent block containing element(s) (DIV or P). Of course, formally making a module or extension out of any of this makes far more sense than some Gadget-like applied solution.

Regardless, inline elements have always had a "hard time" successfully inheriting such values from other inline elements, thus the need to clearly 'spell it out for them' again in a CSS. But add to that the deficiency introduced with the incorporation of the srcset scheme to the thumbnail wiki-markup regime in place now (wtf were they thinking? Its in the alpha stage of HTML5 development at best) and you'll never get that 'cascade of inheriting' to happen across the board. Even the current thumbnail-caption w/magnification icon thingy causes a breakdown in "inheriting" properly for cris' sake.

In short - sorry; you're not likely to overcome all that without the usual christmas tree of coding & scripting in securing a "fix" (see MediaViewer development for an example). I don't see any benefit from this if it comes to that point.
