Thank you so much! :)

Dear KH, you've left me speechless... what can I say other than, thank you so much for your beautiful words :) Although I feel your most kind prasing of my modest userpage and writing abilities to be undeserved, your gracious gift and flattery will be cherished forever :) I see that you're somewhat new around, but you're quickly and steadily making yourself a place here - bravo! jana gana Mana

Hi , I would advise you not to touch the Jana Gana Mana article. There has been a lot of warring over that article and I have been blocked once for 3RR vio over it. Just take a look at the talk page and you will know why. --Deepak D'Souza (talkcontribs) 10:51, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

I don't mind but a bunch of Hindi-hating do. And I'm sure most of your edits are going to be reverted soon. Sorry Da. A lot of us have tried but these people are too determined to keep Hindi out. And they have a couple of admins on their side--Deepak D'Souza (talkcontribs) 04:26, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Before reiterating the incorrect claim on the "Hindi version" and the other "references" that just repeat the Indian govt website, please check with the original, unaltered transcripts of the resolution. Also, see the arguments on the talk page before reverting. Thanks. --Ragib 15:57, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

I have said this in the talk page, and will say it again, no matter of website or other things can change the exact text of a resolution. Yes, if the Indian parliament has adopted it in "Hindi" in any later resolutions, please show that. Other wise, A,B,C references claiming X has something, while X actually doesn't have that at all, just shows A, B, C are all mistaken. Please voice any issues in the article talk page. Thanks. --Ragib 16:07, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

This one. There is also a print version from Govt. of India. --Ragib 17:20, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
  • And apart from the overwhelming fact that the original transcripts dont say anything about the 'hindi' version, there is also the issue of ambiguity that I had raised on the talk page. If you want the words 'hindi version' in the article, first explain to me what the hell, hindi version of a Bengali song could possibly mean! Barring 'translations'(which certainly is not the case here), I've never before heard of a X-language 'version' of a Y-language song! Without a proper explanation from proper sources, there is no way we can import an error/stupidity(or is it fanaticism?) from an outside website into Wikipedia. "hindi version" would be a sitting duck for the {{clarify}} and {{unclear}} tags and there is no reason we have to shove it down our throats. btw, pls take this discussion to the talk page and dont fragment it across several talk pages. and on the talk page, I request you to only ask questions that havent been answered yet(multiple times). Sarvagnya 17:27, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
  • KH, I just noticed that you're misrepresenting(unintentionally i'd assume) Sameer's views on the subject on different talk pages. I request you to go to all the user talk pages where you've quoted him and strike out that portion of your comment. Thanks. Sarvagnya 19:36, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Re:Gandhi and Tagore

Hi - you would be correct in fixing the Gandhi infobox, as Porbandar was a state and not part of British India. As to country, you should use India (disambiguation), as the Republic of India needs to be differentiated. See Wikipedia talk:Notice board for India-related topics/India disambiguation discussion - its a slightly complicated issue, so tread carefully. Jana Gana Mana

The Hindi version should be retained. It is in use by the popular masses, including scores of school text books. I also see no problem with the Hindi and Bengali rendition co-existing. Also, I don't support Sarvagna's claim that Hindi is not the national language of India. He needs to provide credible citations! =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:06, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

user:Sumibot flooding WP

user:Sumibotis making articles on Indian villages (especially of the state AP) which have no notablity. Sad to see Wikipedia being flooded with so many unnotable articles on villages. The number of villages in India run in lakhs. You can't have an article on every village!

And if approve the making of his articles then he should make articles of all the 28 states. --KnowledgeHegemony 11:28, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

The problem is that most are of them are notable by our guidelines, but will never be maintained. It's alright, they'll be unmaintained but also won't be vandalized, so it can't really hurt. —METS501 (talk) 20:42, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
I've just noticed this discussion from "what links" to my bot. I am not going to create articles for all villages in India. I am creating villages at sub-district level based on [1]. The same has been discussed at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/Sumibot. The number of villages in this list is 5564. I intend to create of tahsils in all states and not just Andhra Pradesh. I will update the bot description with this info to avoid any future misconceptions about the bot. --(Sumanth|Talk) 11:08, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Re:What have I done??

Don't worry, you haven't done anything. I was just being cautious. The India page was the site of sockpuppeteering in March, and it wasted a lot of time. That's why I asked Aksi (who is an ace sock-buster) rather than bring it up in a public forum (like checkuser). After he replied and said that there wasn't much going on, I felt reassured. Whether U=a is the same is Johnsmithcba, is moot at this point since the latter account is inactive. Yes, I did notice that you voted against U=a and Nikkul and for a second image to supplement the Apatami (which is what Nichalp, Bovinebeast(?), and I had voted for in February.) However, since I'm not really against a map, and since the map was about demographics, I didn't pursue the issue further. Sorry, if I caused any distress. Dubey uma dutt anjan

I must decline to delete it, because neither "non-notable" or "looks like a kin has come up with this" is actually a reason for speedy deletion. To be deleted under the speedy criterion for notablity, according to WP:CSD, the page must make no claim to notability, and asserting someone to be a famous poet & listing his books does seem like a claim to notability. So is asserting the leadership of what is claimed to be an important organization. COI by itself is not a reason for deletion--but it is a reason for very close scrutiny, to see if the claims hold up.

The article is unreferenced, except for listings of the books.Notability would require a demonstration that the books are considered important as shown by sources. If you doubt it, you should make at least a preliminary check in Google for english sources. Add them if you find them, & remove the unreferenced tag. If you don't find any, or think it insufficient, then send it to WP:AfD, where it will be discussed, and deleted if that is the consensus.

Hello

Please, read the argument I posted on July 20th on India talk page if you have time. Thanks.--Blacksun 09:40, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

A Request

As per the present criteria "People from Uttar Pradesh" only includes those who were born in present UP, or the greater UP or the erstwhile United Province. This criteria is rather unfair to those people who haved loved, lived and contributed to this Region. In fact this is biased in favour of those who happened to be born in UP and then left their land of birth to earn their fame in other parts.

Actually people belong to several places.

Take the example of Amitabh Bacchhan. He belongs to so many areas, Allahabad, Nainital, UP, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Bollywood, South Asia, the World of Cinema etc etc.And he actually belongs to all of them.

In short, why not expand the criteria : People who were born and who have lived a substantial period of their lives in this state. I think it would be fair . Seeking your opinion on this matter.

With Regards

moon 07:48, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Re: Criteria of List of people from _______

Sorry for the late reply.

I think there are several points to consider. For example,

  • Are you writing an article like "List of Tamils"? Then the main criteria is whether the person is Tamil or of Tamil heritage.
  • Are you writing about people of any particular nationality? Then whether their birthplace, and/or their native area/country should be considered.
  • Finally, and related to what you asked: Are you writing about "List of people from Uttar Pradesh"? In my opinion, the sole criteria is whether those persons were born and brought up in Uttar Pradesh. If a person, say, was born and brought up in Bihar, but later moved to UP, that won't make that person "from" UP.

Thanks. --Ragib 00:29, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

I agree

Yes I agree ,lets first populate the list. You must visit some other lists like 'List of people from Tamil Nadu , Goa, etc' to learn from them. But i think our list will end best of all. Kudos to you too.

Hi

I have removed all Red entries from the list to make it more presentable. This was prompted by threat of deletion of another list that I had created called List of Indian women.

Together we have created quite a list . Let us now only include those names that already have existing wiki articles. For those whom we wish to include we must create wiki articles. I hope you will agree.

My pun on AfD

I commented on the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Indian women note that you left, but wanted to follow-up on your talk page because I do not always follow the AfDs to which I contribute myself. I just wanted you to know that the pun was unintentional and the note recognizing the pun was not posted until over 20 minutes after the AfD was opened, at which point somebody had already responded or I would have simply rephrased my nomination. "Broad category" is a phrase I have often used in discussing deletions for other lists, and the misapplication did not occur to me. I felt it was better to acknowledge my faux pas than to risk having it pointed out to me, particularly because I am female. Sorry for cluttering up your talk page, but I really hate for people to think that it was intentional. I know what you mean about "no pun intended" generally indicating that the pun was meant, but in this case there was considerable time lag between the slip of the lip and the acknowledgment of it. I'm still pretty embarrassed by it. :/ --Moonriddengirl 18:09, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I crossed this article as a suspected copyright violation from the animal info website. I am concerned that this list might be subject to copyright and I was wondering if you could dig up a copyright-free source to back up it. As it stands, I really fear it's a copyright violation from animalinfo.org -- lucasbfr talk 21:48, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi again, we are having a discussion about this article at Wikipedia:Suspected copyright violations. Perhaps you should drop by :). A safe road could be to contact animalinfo.org and ask them to release the content under the GFDL if they have the authority to do so (ie. if they own the copyright) -- lucasbfr talk 22:14, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
There are two possibilities, the quick and dirty or the long and nice. Both imply to ask them for permission and explain them the GFDL (possibility to alter the text, to sell the content, ...). Then:
  • You ask them to e-mail the permission explicitly to yourself and you copy-paste their e-mail to the talk page of the article. And of course you "swear" you're not lying ;) (that's the quich and dirty)
  • or you ask them to send their permission to permissions-en@wikimedia.org that's the safest but on the other hand that might take a while. I know the queue on the permission list can be long.
You choose ;) Good luck, anyway we will keep an eye on the article but it's safe to say we won't delete it before a week! -- lucasbfr talk 21:36, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Apparently, the data is then copyright to IUCN or its collaborators. The problem is that while Use and reproduction of data and figures for educational or other non-commercial purposes is authorized, we don't enter this field since the GFDL requires the ability to "copy and distribute the Document in any medium, either commercially or noncommercially" and therefore is incompatible with material that excludes commercial re-use. You can try to contact them to have their permission, but it's possible they won't want to authorize that... -- lucasbfr talk 09:50, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
Hi again, just wanted to know if you had some luck with them? If you didn't contact them yet, I can send them an e-mail explaining the situation. -- lucasbfr talk 12:17, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Article size

You asked about article size on my talk page. The guidelines are at WP:SIZE. As it explains there, the suggested readable prose is 30–50 KB, calculated by subtracting the elements listed there that don't count towards readable prose. The idea is that the page should be the amount of text that an average reader with an average attention span can digest in one sitting. Dr pda (talk · contribs) has a script that calculates readable prose size. I object to FAs that pass 50 KB readable prose, but there are about a dozen that do. Hi, I noticed you have udnertook some editing in the India page. If you have a look in the page history and the Talk:India page, you will notice that Fowler&fowler«Talk» may have taken an issue with my earlier edits win the India#History section regarding the last decade of the The Raj and the Indian independence movement. It is possible that he may have come under impression that I making a PoV edit to promote Subhas Chandra Bose and the Indian National Army, which I have explained I am not. I have explained my edits here and Talk:India#Bose_and_the_history_section I would like it if you gave your opinions on this issue in the talk page since I felt the page was an extremely condensed form of the movement which actually gave a factually wrong impression, and I would like it if this was addressed in the article even if my edits have to be modified for this.Your views would be appreciated.Rueben lys 01:07, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

The Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the four holy sites related to the life of the Lord Buddha, and particularly to the attainment of Enlightenment. The first temple was built by Emperor Asoka in the 3rd century BC, and the present temple dates from the 5th century BC or 6th centuries. It is one of the earliest Buddhist temples built entirely in brick, still standing in India, from the late Gupta period.[1]

Hi, K-H, Glad to see you back in action! Speedy deletion of Hindu (newspaper)

A tag has been placed on Hindu (newspaper), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia per speedy deletion criterion G1.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the article and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi there, Thanks for your input. Very good suggestion. I do plan to include material about the rise of nationalism. It is briefly mentioned in the Short History, section 3 (towards the end), but you are right, it needs to be expanded. That history, which was originally an outline, is now being fleshed out. I am, however, not undertaking the expansion in an orderly fashion. I started with World War I and am now working on the next section, and will probably leapfrog – from section to section – a lot, depending on what drives my interests. Also, there are a number of authors who I want to incorporate (to make sure we have a balanced view), so the writing will likely take time. I am hoping I can stay focused! Thanks again. India - Government

I'll Harvardise it this weekend. Incidentally, I notice the section once again makes some use of primary sources (the Constitution of India) in three citations. They're unnecessary, since they facts they document are already covered by another citation, so unless you have any objections I'll take those out. -- Arvind (talk) 15:16, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Re:Conditional Support

Hello KH, thanks for the message. I have put references where the {{cn}} tags were placed. I will however mention that the citation to the effort for deportation (in the Hindu-German Conspiracy Trial sub-section) is not the original one from where I found the info (I forgot to reference at the time and now seem to have lost it in the Jumble of references). Nonetheless, Dignans work says as much so should be suitable. Otherwise, I can change the wording. The citation for Connaught rangers memorial is from the biography of Colin Gubbins by Wilkinson and Ashley. Hope this helps, let me know if this needs clarified. Requesting a favour

Hello KH, I wonder if you can help. I had made some edits to British Raj, wiki linking some articles to Rowlatt Commission and Hindu-German Conspiracy, when these were undone in a very rude and obnoxious manner by Fowler (see Talk:British Raj). He alleged that I was inserting links to PoV invested articles etc etc and actually undid and deleted the references I had given (one of which was to a book by Verney Lovett who sat in teh Rowlatt Committee). I find Fowler's approach not only dishonest (I believe he wishes to suppress everything that doesn't agree ith his Britain was out to save India PoV), but also (obscurely) supramist. I had earlier invited him to edit the conspiracy article which he never replied to. He has time and again argued that the references I have given (mostly academic Journals) are not notable or unworthy, which betrays a stupendous ignorance for somebody who claims to be a proffessor. I am the end of my tether, and was wondering (since you seem to get along relatively better with fowler) if there's anything you might suggest.Rueben lys (talk) 03:43, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi KH, I noticed you made some changes in the etymology section of the India page (from this version to this version). I think it is very creditable that you want to make the etymology section more informative, but I believe there are better and more neutral sources for the changes you have implemented. The best source—the ultimate authority on the English language—remains the OED, whose etymology for India is: "India adopted from Latin India, adopted from Greek Ίνδία, a form of Ίνδός the (river) Indus, adopted from Persian hind, Old Persian (Achæmenian) hiñd'u, Zend (Avestan, Old Bactrian) heñdu, Sanskrit sindhu ‘river’, specifically the river Indus; hence the region of the Indus, the province Sindh; gradually extended by Persians and Greeks to all the country east of the Indus. Old English had India from Latin; but the Medieval English form from French was Ynde, Inde, IND (compare Afric), now archaic and poetic; the early 16th century adaptation of Latin was Indie, INDY (cf. Italy, Germany), of which the plural INDIES is still in use. The current use of India appears to date from the 16th century, and may partly reflect Spanish, or Portuguese usage." The citation for this is: "India", Oxford English Dictionary, second edition, 2001, Oxford University Press. Of course, in order to use this, the text will have to be paraphrased slightly, but in my opinion, this level of information is enough for the India page. In my opinion there are several problems with the new additions:

  • Koenraad Elst, whom you have cited, is at best a controversial scholar. Although he has been latched onto by the Hindu nationalist community in India, he has no standing in the international academic community (or for that matter among serious scholars in India) in the field of Vedic Sanskrit. Including him, when there is a neutral source like the OED, is a sure recipe for culture wars on the India page.
  • Same with the other website you have cited. It seems to be a website associated with a Hindu guru, and would not be regarded as reliable (again for material for which there are other more neutral and reliable sources).
  • I think Rig-Veda or Hinduism should not be mentioned in the etymology since (a) they have nothing to do with the etymology and (b) the word "sindhu" is of older vintage that just Vedic Sanskit. It comes from Proto-Indo-Iranian, the language spoken by the Aryans, before they reached India. So, mentioning Vedic Sanskrit, but not Proto-Indo-Iranian is recipe for another controversy, (c) it is not clear where the foundations of Hinduism were laid. It is quite likely (according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica) they were laid in the region Sapta Sindhu that is now in Pakistan, so mentioning it in the Republic of India page is recipe for a third controversy.

Sorry to be a thorn in the side, but I think most of your additions can be cited using the OED (other than Rig-Veda and Hinduism, which should not be mentioned in the etymology.) Thanks. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 18:08, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

India GDP

The reason I have updated the India GDP figures is because the CIA World Factbook figures differ greatly from the published IMF and WorldBank figures. Considering both India's economic growth and the validity of two major sources as opposed to one, I would think it is best to not alter GDP information.

I should add that if you do think the GDP page for India should be changed, then the GDP page for all major economies including China, Germany, UK, France, Russia etc. should also be updated and contain the new CIA information. That would be required to promote standards of consistency.
