WikiCup 2019 May newsletter

The second round of the 2019 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to scored 32 points to advance into round 3. Our top four scorers in round 2 all scored over 400 points and were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber (1210), our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three DYKs. He also made good use of the bonus points available, more than doubling his score by choosing appropriate articles to work on.
  • Wales Kosack (750), last year's runner up, with an FA, a GA, two FLs, and five DYKs.
  • Adam Cuerden (480), a WikiCup veteran, with 16 featured pictures, mostly restorations.
  • Kingdom of Prussia Zwerg Nase (461), a seasoned competitor, with a FA, a GA and an ITN item.

Other notable performances were put in by Chicago Barkeep49 with six GAs, United States Ceranthor, England Lee Vilenski, and Saskatchewan Canada Hky, each with seven GARs, and Denmark MPJ-DK with a seven item GT.

So far contestants have achieved nine featured articles between them and a splendid 80 good articles. Commendably, 227 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2019 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. The judges are pleased with the thorough GARs that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! May 22, 7pm: WikiWednesday Salon and Skill-Share NYC

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at Metropolitan New York Library Council in Midtown Manhattan. Is there a project you'd like to share? A question you'd like answered? A Wiki* skill you'd like to learn? Let us know by adding it to the agenda.

Featuring this month a presentation by Interference Archive guests, and a group discussion on the role of activist archives and building wiki content based on ephemeral publications and oral histories.

To close off the night, we'll also have Wikidojo - a group collaborative writing activity / vaudeville!

We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming edit-a-thons, museum and library projects, education initiatives, and other outreach activities.

7:00pm - 9:00 pm at Metropolitan New York Library Council (8th floor) at 599 11th Avenue, Manhattan
(note this month we will be meeting in Midtown Manhattan, not at Babycastles)

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Wikimedia New York City Team 17:11, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

Skifree

Hey there. Stumbled across the GAN review of Skifree and was wondering if you have plans on continuing the review. I guess the reviewer didn't ping you when he was done. GamerPro64 00:44, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

GamerPro64, ah! Sorry about that. I'll come back to this in the next few days! — Rhododendrites talk \\ 00:51, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
@GamerPro64: Ok. Review version 2 is live. Thanks for your patience. Oops. Sorry, confused you with the nominator of the article. I'll ping them separately for a heads up. :) — Rhododendrites talk \\ 00:54, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

@Softlavender: One thing I Definitely-Know-For-Sure about this Completely-and-Totally-Accidental system of repeated archiving and unarchiving is that it has nothing to do with those plans made at that cabal meeting That-Didn't-Happen last month. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 13:42, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
Aside: I almost gave up rollback rights because it feels like the only time I ever click that link is once or twice a year when my thumb hits it instead of "thanks" on mobile. First time for the archive link, though... — Rhododendrites talk \\ 13:44, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Kitty O'Brien Joyner

On 10 June 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Kitty O'Brien Joyner, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Kitty O'Brien Joyner (pictured) was the first woman engineer at NACA, the predecessor to NASA? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Kitty O'Brien Joyner. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Kitty O'Brien Joyner), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Fringe theory specialists?

Hey, I was wondering if there is such a thing as a group of Wikipedians who in some sense specialize in or are experienced in investigating elaborate looking but crackpot pseudoscience "walled gardens," as I suspect educology is, and if there is a way/if it would be appropriate to draw their attention to it. Thanks. Crossroads1 (talk) 19:26, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

@Crossroads1: In fact, there is WP:FTN, the fringe theories noticeboard. Allow me to be the one to post there, though. Someone who nominates an article for AfD posting there could be seen as WP:CANVASSING, and a neutral notice is important. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 19:30, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

  • Congratulations! I think a lot more of yours should have passed, but it's a start. Maybe try more in a few weeks, once they're being less... y'know... Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.7% of all FPs 16:32, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
  • Thanks, Adam Cuerden. I admit I've been rather frustrated with the FPC process on enwiki. I don't feel like I have a clear sense of what people want in terms of EV. In fact, I think the issue is that too many people have their own idiosyncratic guidelines they apply. On Commons that happens sometimes, but there are enough other people with more straightforward interpretations of the criteria to balance it out. I don't see myself nominating anything else on enwiki for a while, but I suppose we'll see if that's just temporary annoyance speaking. :) — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:23, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 14

Newsletter • June 2019

Updates: I've been focusing largely on the development side of things, so we are a lot closer now to being ready to actually start discussing deploying it and testing it out here.

There's just a few things left that need to be resolved:

  • A bunch of language support issues in particular, plus some other release blockers, such as the fact that currently there's no good way to find any hubs people do create.
  • We also probably need some proper documentation and examples up to even reference if we want a meaningful discussion. We have the extension documentation and some test projects, but we probably need a bit more. Also I need to be able to even find the test projects! How can I possibly write reports about this stuff if I can't find any of it?!

Some other stuff that's happened in the meantime:

  • Midpoint report is out for this round of the project, if you want to read in too much detail about all the problems I've been running into.
  • WikiProject Molecular Biology have successfully set up using the old module system that CollaborationKit is intended to replace (eventually), and it even seems to work, so go them. Based on the issues they ran into, it looks like the members signup thing on that system has some of the same problems as we've been unable to resolve in CK, though, which is... interesting. (Need to change the content model to the right thing for the formwizard config to take. Ugh, content models.)

Until next time,

WP:CEN is now open!

To all interested parties: Now that it has a proper shortcut, the current events noticeboard has now officially opened for discussion!

WP:CEN came about as an idea I explored through a request for comment that closed last March. Recent research has re-opened the debate on Wikipedia's role in a changing faster-paced internet. Questions of WP:NOTNEWS and WP:Recentism are still floating around. That being said, there are still plenty of articles to write and hopefully this noticeboard can positively contribute to that critical process.

Thank you for your participation in the RFC, and I hope to see you at WP:CEN soon! –MJLTalk 19:10, 29 June 2019 (UTC)
