Question
[edit]When I asked for people's opinions regarding a RfA, some said that I had a low Wikipedia namespace edit and that it wasn't enough to support, my question is, what is the general accepted number that would be supported? Chase (talk) 04:43, 11 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Chase: Apologies for the delay in getting back to you - as you know, the Wikipedia namespace holds a number of key areas admins are expected to work in. Your lack of edits to areas such as WP:AIV, WP:UAA and WP:AFD will concern may voters. There's no "accepted number" I can give you, but I will give you this piece of advice which was given to me by a wise admin: "stop mentioning adminship and just concentrate on what you like doing here. Eventually, someone *else* will bring up the prospect for you." - to clarify, focus on areas of Wikipedia you like getting involved in, help out by reverting and reporting vandals and spend some time weighing in at WP:AFD. You're a great editor, so keep it up! -- samtar talk or stalk 20:07, 11 September 2016 (UTC)
- Would you be willing to help me out with Justin Bieber videography? I solely created the article and need the eyes of another. Trying to get it to featured list status. Chase (talk) 19:00, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

Mikhail Agrest
[edit]You have just PRODded this article for lack of sources, having yourself removed the link to the relevant page on the website of the Mariinsky Theatre, for whom he is a conductor. Why is that website not acceptable? Eustachiusz (talk) 23:19, 17 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Eustachiusz: the website was not appropriate as a reference, as it was a primary source. Please find some different sources -- samtar talk or stalk 08:26, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- This is a strange understanding of "primary source". Are you saying that it is not possible to use this man's employer's website to confirm that he is indeed employed there? Eustachiusz (talk) 10:51, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- I'm saying it's not possible to use a primary source as a sole reference for an entire BLP - what about that are you struggling to understand? -- samtar talk or stalk 10:54, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- There is no need to be snide about it. What I am querying is why an employer's website, which is not the same as this individual's own website, is a primary source. I'll also remind you that the wording of the PROD tag about this required one source to undo the PROD - it doesn't mention multiple sources.
- In the meantime the article has been identified as a copyvio, which is an entirely different issue. I would still like clarification of the above point.Eustachiusz (talk) 11:04, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- I realise that I am completely incorrect in my assumption - you can of course use this to confirm that Mikhail works at the Mariinsky Theatre, and that the site is not a primary source. I somehow misread that as a profile page written by the person in question. My apologies Eustachiusz for the removal of the reference (which can indeed be cited and not just listed as an external link), the BLP PROD and the less-than-ideal snarky remark -- samtar talk or stalk 11:20, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- All good! I was just puzzled. I also slipped by not spotting the copyvio even when the original was in front of me.Eustachiusz (talk) 11:29, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

Southeast Europe Coalition on Whistleblower Protection
[edit]Hello Samtar, Can you please tell me why you removed the entry on the Southeast Europe Coalition on Whistleblower Protection. This is a legitimate public interest organization, with many NGO and journalist members throughout the region, as you can see.
https://see-whistleblowing.org/
I was on a business trip and was not able to respond before the entry was deleted. I did not save the original text. How can I access the original text so I can improve the entry? Many thanks and kind regards, Mark Worth — Preceding unsigned comment added by Quinn2425 (talk • contribs) 12:13, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Quinn2425: Hi there - yes of course. Although I cannot remember exactly what it was about the article which prompted me to mark it for deletion (as I myself did not delete the article) it would have been related to a lack of a credible claim of significance. As for getting the article back to work on, if you pop over to WP:REFUND or ask the deleting admin (Nyttend) they can restore it to a draft so you can work on it at your leisure. I hope I've managed to answer your question, and if you ever need any further help don't hesitate to let me know -- samtar talk or stalk 12:23, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Quinn2425: just a quick thought - if you are associated with the Coalition in any way you will likely have a conflict of interest. This doesn't stop you editing about the organization but you should take the time to read through this advice -- samtar talk or stalk 12:26, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

{{Special:RecentChanges}}

. [13] - The notification badge is coloured if you have notifications. When you check the notification the badge will now turn grey on all wikis instead of just the local one. [14]
- Colours used in the Wikimedia wikis' main interface changed slightly. This is to make them easier to see for readers and editors with reduced eyesight. [15]
Changes this week
- Hidden HTML comments will be more visible when you edit with the visual editor.
<!-- You write hidden HTML comments like this. -->
[16] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 October. It will be on all wikis from 13 October (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 11 October at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the next meeting with the Architecture committee. The topics this week is CREDITS files. The meeting will be on 12 October at 21:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Language converter syntax will soon no longer work inside external links. Wikitext like
http://-{zh-cn:foo.com; zh-hk:bar.com; zh-tw:baz.com}-
must be replaced. You will have to write-{zh-cn: http://foo.com ; zh-hk: http://bar.com ; zh-tw:http://baz.com }-
instead. This only affects languages with Language Converter enabled. Examples of such languages are Chinese and Serbian. [17]

Spam intervention
[edit]Thanks for your actions on my report about the spam link. I had looked at the blacklist option but felt out of my depth with the technical requirements. Also wasn't sure if there was a simpler fix. Hopefully the message will get through now. Rayman60 (talk) 02:01, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
Help
[edit]So I talked about my mission (you saw). Who would I talk to to negotiate the rules so I could represent other users ban appeals? I'm obviously not going to ask the founder of Wikipedia, so who would I ask? UNSC Luke 1021 (talk) 21:05, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
Notice of Biographies of living persons noticeboard discussion
[edit]This message is being sent to inform you that a discussion is taking place at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. The thread is Michael Gastauer. The discussion is about the topic Michael Gastauer. Thank you. Murph9000 (talk) 13:12, 9 October 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up Murph9000 - there's plenty o' socks abound with this case. I'm frankly rather sick of these COI editing socks, but at least they're making it easy to spot! -- samtar talk or stalk 14:29, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

Editing News #3—2016
[edit]Read this in another language • Subscription list for this multilingual newsletter • Subscribe or unsubscribe on the English Wikipedia
Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has mainly worked on a new wikitext editor. They have also released some small features and the new map editing tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the list of work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, releasing the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving language support.
Recent changes
[edit]- You can now set text as small or big.[18]
- Invisible templates have been shown as a puzzle icon. Now, the name of the invisible template is displayed next to the puzzle icon.[19] A similar feature will display the first part of hidden HTML comments.[20]
- Categories are displayed at the bottom of each page. If you click on the categories, the dialog for editing categories will open.[21]
- At many wikis, you can now add maps to pages. Go to the Insert menu and choose the "Maps" item. The Discovery department are adding more features to this area, like geoshapes. You can read more on MediaWiki.org.[22]
- The "Save" button now says "Save page" when you create a page, and "Save changes" when you change an existing page.[23] In the future, the "Save page" button will say "Publish page". This will affect both the visual and wikitext editing systems. More information is available on Meta.
- Image galleries now use a visual mode for editing. You can see thumbnails of the images, add new files, remove unwanted images, rearrange the images by dragging and dropping, and add captions for each image. Use the "Options" tab to set the gallery's display mode, image sizes, and add a title for the gallery.[24]
Future changes
[edit]The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the remaining 10 "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next month. The developers want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect several languages, including Thai, Burmese and Aramaic.
The team is working on a modern wikitext editor. The 2017 wikitext editor will look like the visual editor and be able to use the citoid service and other modern tools. This new editing system may become available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices in October 2016. You can read about this project in a general status update on the Wikimedia mailing list.
Let's work together
[edit]Do you teach new editors how to use the visual editor? Did you help set up the Citoid automatic reference feature for your wiki? Have you written or imported TemplateData for your most important citation templates? Would you be willing to help new editors and small communities with the visual editor? Please sign up for the new VisualEditor Community Taskforce.
If you aren't reading this in your preferred language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly, so that we can notify you when the next issue is ready. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:19, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

Latest news from the Wikimedia Collaboration team, about Notifications, Flow and Edit Review Improvements. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you.
What's new?
The Collaboration team is delighted to publish its first newsletter! Your feedback is welcome.
This quarter the team will focus on improving Special:RecentChanges and create a ReviewStream, a new feed designed to improve the edit-review process. Both are part of the new Edit Review Improvements project.
Notifications [ More information · Help pages ]
Recent changes
- Documentation concerning Notifications types has been updated. That page is ready for translations. [25]
- For developers, how to create a new Notification type has been updated. [26]
- Tools owners will be notified when OAuth app changes state. [27]
- When you edit text and mention a new username they are notified if you add your signature. Before this only happened under certain conditions. [28]
- Users are notified if they are mentioned in a section where you add your own signature even if you edit more than one section. Before, users were not notified if you edited more than one section in one edit. [29]
- Sometimes when you mention another user they don't get a notification. Now you can get a notification when you successfully send out a mention to someone or be told if they did not get a notification. This is an opt-in option in your preferences. [30][31]
- On Notifications, the badge is colored if you have some notifications. If you see these notifications, the badge will turn grey on all wikis instead of just the local one. [32]
Problems
- For some users, cross-wiki notifications haven't been working properly. The count has been wrong when only cross-wiki notifications were present. The cross-wiki bundle has been showing only the names of wikis and not the actual notifications. It has been fixed. [33][34]
- When a title was created with some wikitext inside of it, Notifications were not linking that title when they were mentioned. This is now fixed. [35]
- Some Notifications messages were not supporting
{{GENDER:}}
. This is now fixed. [36]
Future changes
- On Special:Notifications, pages and counts related to disabled notification types will not be shown anymore. [37]
Flow [ More information · Help pages ]
Recent changes
- Flow is available as a Beta feature on Greek Wikipedia. [38]
- A satisfaction survey was conducted concerning Flow in September 2016. Results will be published in December 2016. [39]

- It is now possible to moderate a Flow topic that have been resolved without re-opening it. [41]

Problems
- It is not possible to enable or disable Flow as a Beta feature on wikis where that option is available. This is under investigation. [43]
- Some Flow messages were not supporting
{{GENDER:}}
. This is now fixed. [44]
Future changes
- Communities that have Flow enabled manually on user talk pages will be asked to move on to a Beta feature activation to simplify the process. [45]
