GAN nomination and review[edit]

Hi, there is no need to either remove passed nominations from WP:GAN or manually add them. Please read Wikipedia:Good article nominations/Transition FAQ, which is referred to prominently at the top of the page. If nominating you need to substitute the GAN template on the article talk page. I notice that you have nominated 1989 Pacific hurricane season. This is already a good article, you have not added a nomination template, so the bot will remove this nomination shortly. If you review and pass as you did at Hurricane Paine (1986), you simply need to add the GA passed template. instructions at WP:GAN. Also you need to add the {{Good article}} template to the bottom of the article itself so that the GAN start shows. And you need to chnage the project banner(s) to reflect the GA status. I have done this for you. Jezhotwells (talk) 17:06, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Storm of the month
'Typhoon Fanapi' is Storm of the Month

Typhoon Fanapi approaching Taiwan

Early on September 14, the JMA reported that a tropical depression had formed east of Taiwan. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center soon designated the depression as 12W with PAGASA naming it Inday shortly thereafter. Later on the same day, the tropical depression was upgraded to a tropical storm and was officially given the name Fanapi by the JMA. On September 16, the storm further intensified into a severe tropical storm. That same day, the JMA further upgraded it into a typhoon. Fanapi turned west and intensified into a category 1 typhoon that night. On the following day, the storm further intensified into a category 2 typhoon. On September 18, the storm further intensified to a Category 3 typhoon and moved straight into Taiwan. It made landfall in Hualien County at 8:40 a.m. (10.40am AEST) on September 19, with winds of 162 kilometres (101 mi) and across the island at a speed of 20km/h. Shortly after its landfall, it moved south and again turned east and rapidly weakened into a Severe Tropical Storm. It had a Category 1 equivalent strength at that time. At 06:00 PM (Local time), the typhoon went back into the ocean. Post Storm Analysis proved that the system stayed on land for 9 hours approximately. The storm made its second landfall at Zhangpu County, Zhangzhou, Fujian province, China, at a Category 1 Typhoon intensity. The Storm caused a large scale damage to Taiwan. In the early hours of September 21, Fanapi weakened into a tropical depression over Guangdong province, China. On Septemner 22, Fanapi dissipated completely.

WikiCup 2010 October newsletter[edit]

The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to New South Wales Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) and Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is New South Wales Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Connecticut Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.

The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Your GA nomination of Hurricane Virgil (1992)[edit]

The article Hurricane Virgil (1992) you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Hurricane Virgil (1992) for things which need to be addressed. Paul GA review[edit]

Thank you for your review of Tropical Storm Paul for GA. I have a few issues before for you add more comments or finish the GA review. Let's see, about this statement you made: "... The twentieth tropical cyclone and eighteenth named storm of the 2000 Pacific hurricane season, Paul developed on October 25 from a tropical disturbance situated several hundred miles southwest of Mexico." kinda of a big sentence? Uou might wanta fix it. Also, should'nt was be changed is?", I kinda disagree with you on that one, since other storms have an even longer second sentence, take Tropical Storm Norman of that year for example:

  • "The sixteenth cyclone and fourteenth named storm of the 2000 Pacific hurricane season, Norman originated in a tropical wave that emerged from the coast of Africa on September 4, and moved westward across the Atlantic Ocean; the wave entered the Pacific on September 16."

compared with:

  • "The twentieth tropical cyclone and eighteenth named storm of the 2000 Pacific hurricane season, Paul developed on October 25 from a tropical disturbance situated several hundred miles southwest of Mexico."

I also have another comment, isn't it obvious how the flooding occurred ("How did the flooding occur?")? I think nearly everyone that reads the article would understand that very heavy rains = flooding. Also on that issue, I had already mentioned the remnants of Paul interacting with the upper-level low, and that answers why there was heavy rainfall. Again, thank you for the review--12george1 (talk) 18:16, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Do you know how many FA'S and GA's WP:HOOPS has? Thanks, --Belugaboycup of tea? 01:22, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Would you be willing to do some questions for WP:NBA instead? I'm thinking, now that I know that HOOPS is dead, I'd really appreciate it.

Welcome to the 2011 WikiCup![edit]

Hello, happy new year and welcome to the 2011 WikiCup! Your submissions' page can be found here and instructions of how to update the page can be found here and on the submissions' page itself. From the submissions' page, a bot will update the main scoresheet. Our rules have been very slightly updated from last year; the full rules can be found here. Please remember that you can only receive points for content on which you have done significant work in 2011; nominations of work from last year and "drive-by" nominations will not be awarded points. Signups are going to remain open through January, so if you know of anyone who would like to take part, please direct them to Wikipedia:WikiCup/2011 signups. The judges can be contacted on the WikiCup talk page, on their respective talk pages, or by email. Other than that, we will be in contact at the end of every month with the newsletter. If you want to stop or start receiving newsletters, please remove your name from or add your name to this list. Good luck! J Milburn and The ed17 13:01, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Lidia sandbox[edit]

You removed all the paragraphs I wrote, although much of my prose is still there. I would't have merged all impact paragraphs into one the way you did, as it was easier to follow and remember what was what if seperate paragraphs are used. Also, it was unnecessary to remove the category links the way you did. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 18:13, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lidia DYK[edit]

Hi. I've nominated Tropical Storm Lidia, an article you worked on, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article here, where you can improve it if you see fit. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 03:47, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I unilaterally nominated this at my own perogative. Since you changed the order of sentences, merged paragraphs, etc, I listed you as an author at the nomination. Please make sure to review someone else's DYK nomination and (likely) mention it there. Please be sure to follow the appropriate procedure and all criteria, and to mention it in the Lidia nomination. Thank you. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 03:54, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
