The Windows 11 2024 Update[1] (also known as version 24H2[2][3][4]) is the third and current major update to Windows 11. It carries the build number 10.0.26100.
Overview
[edit]The first preview was released to Insiders who opted in to the Canary and Dev Channels on February 8, 2024. The update began rolling out for Copilot Plus PCs on June 15, 2024.[5] As of build 26052, the version string has been changed from "23H2" to "24H2". The update began rolling out to all users on October 1, 2024.[6][4]
Version 24H2 notably introduces the first Windows 11 based Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) editions, along with new subscription variants of IoT Enterprise editions (both LTSC and non-LTSC).[7]
The update will reach end of service on October 13, 2026, for Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations and SE editions.[8] The Enterprise, Enterprise multi-session, IoT Enterprise and Education editions will reach end of service on October 12, 2027.[8] The Enterprise LTSC and IoT Enterprise LTSC editions will reach end of service on October 9, 2029, and October 10, 2034, respectively.[8]
System requirements
[edit]Version 24H2 introduces modified system requirements, for some systems, for the first time since the release of Windows 11, as follows:
- A x86-64-v2 CPU supporting SSE4.2 and POPCNT CPU instructions is now required, otherwise the Windows kernel is unbootable.[9] (Only affecting systems bypassing or exempt from the TPM 2.0 requirement.)
- IoT Enterprise editions (LTSC and non-LTSC) have officially eliminated a TPM and UEFI requirement, and dropped the minimum DirectX version down to 10 (version 12 was previously required on 23H2).[7][10]
- The new IoT Enterprise LTSC edition drops the minimum required RAM down to 2 GB, and storage space down to 16 GB.[7][10]
- ARMv8.1 is now required for ARM variants, dropping unofficial support for ARMv8.0.[11] On ARMv8.0 CPU, the Windows kernel is unbootable.
- ARM variants drop support for 32-bit ARM applications.[12] Only 64-bit ARM applications will run.
Key features in the Windows 11 24H2 Update
[edit]- Windows 11 HDR backdrop support: It allows users to activate HDR background support if they have an HDR monitor. This option can be found in the settings app.[13]
- New Bluetooth LE audio and Wi-Fi 7 have been introduced, adding support for the latest Wi-Fi 7 technology, which enhances data transfer speeds. Additionally, Bluetooth LE audio is now supported. The update also includes a refresh button for Wi-Fi networks and an indication of scan progress.[14]
- Better Windows 11 Search: Microsoft has also made improvements to Windows' search capabilities. Users can now search for documents and photos using descriptive phrases rather than specific file names.[13]
- Super Resolution: Photographs may be enhanced by users without sacrificing quality. It supports scaling resolution up to 8x, employing AI upscaling capabilities. It will function more quickly if users have Copilot+PCs.[14]
- Windows Recall (preview): This feature lets users find content they have already viewed. When Microsoft first introduced the recall function, the business received a lot of negative feedback. As a result, the feature has been delayed and is currently in preview. The feature requires Windows Hello for secure access because it may display sensitive data. The company has also included a sensitive information filter to protect personal data. A user has the option to disable the recall feature if they choose not to use it.[13]
- Windows Studio Effects: In order to improve audio and video calling, users can now apply Windows Studio effects to their webcams and microphones. Microsoft Teams is one of the supported applications, along with Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, and the Microsoft Camera app. Users can apply effects including backdrop blur, eye correction, portrait lighting, and illustrative filters.[15]
- Windows Click to Do (preview): Click to Do provides an interactive PC screen overlay and expedites chores. It has several functions for tasks including text summarizing or sending, blending backgrounds in pictures, and using Bing for visual search.[13]
