Baidu Yi (Chinese: 百度•易平台; pinyin: Bǎidù-Yì píngtái; lit. 'Baidu Yi Platform', 易 Yì meaning "exchange" or "easy") is an operating system for mobile devices.[1] It is based on Google's Android but is a fork by Baidu, the dominant search engine operator in China. It was announced on 2 September 2011 at the 2011 Baidu Technology Innovation Conference in Beijing.[2]
Background
The “2011 Baidu World Conference” has revealed the biggest suspense: Baidu Yi, the first mobile terminal software platform ever launched by Baidu, finally made its debut to the public. This platform is the crystallization of Baidu’s search technology and mobile Internet development. It has integrated intelligent search, powerful cloud service, and various featured Baidu apps. Through deep collaboration with terminal manufactures, operators, mobile Internet service providers, and other upstream and downstream industry chains, it provides billions of users with convenient, abundant, and personalized mobile Internet experience.
With the surging of mobile Internet, Baidu aimed at the development of mobile Internet technology and users’ need for apps, taking full advantage of its users, traffic, technique, service and brand, and finally introduced Baidu Yi, an intelligent terminal software platform.
Features
It will have Baidu applications replacing Google's for many core functions, such as the search engine, instant messenger, ebook reader, and app store.[3] Baidu is expected to provide 180 gigabytes of cloud storage for users.[4]

Users would have initially 180GB of cloud storage space, which can be freely upgraded to unlimited storage. It supports local documents, pictures, music, videos synchronization and contacts and program schedule backing up.

On 6 September 2011, it was reported that Dell was developing new phones that are planned to operate Yi for sale in the Chinese market; Baidu also said that it was working with other unnamed companies, including hardware manufacturers, to support the Yi platform.[5]
