[edit] District profile

The district is currently located within California's Central Valley, including Fresno, Kings, Kern, and Tulare Counties. Hanford and Delano are the two largest cities fully contained within the district. The district is largely rural with agriculture being the main source of the district's economy. Areas of Kings, Tulare, and Fresno counties that are in the district vote heavily Republican. However, the majority of the larger population centers are in largely Hispanic cities in Kern County such as Delano, Shafter, Wasco, Arvin, Lamont and East Bakersfield that vote heavily for Democrats. This combination makes it an extremely competitive district among the two major parties with rural farmers and Hispanics being the two most crucial voting blocs. Nicole Parra successfully appealed to both of these voting blocs which helped her to win three terms.

Former Assembly Speaker Brian Setencich, current 20th district congressman Jim Costa, and John G. Veneman (father of former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman) have all represented the 30th district. Clare Berryhill (the father of current 14th district Senator Tom Berryhill and 26th district Assemblyman Bill Berryhill) represented this district from 1969 until 1970.
