Adding cast to tv episodes

Thanks for the welcome & suggested links, however I still cannot discern what to do in order to do what seems in theory simple: add names of guest stars to the lists (which already include episode summary & in some cases, guest cast) of tv program seasons (for instance, Law & Order). Another contributor provided a reply to my query on the new user help pages, but the response didn't seem relevant, so I'm asking you instead. I also tried doing so in the Law & Order wiki itself, but couldn't figure out (even after checking those help pages) how to add actor & character to the table/chart/list (of recurring characters). I'm trying to learn how to format (not because I want to, but because I wish to contribute, flesh out the info. that is sporadic/inconsistent), but am having such difficulty with the special instructions I'm supposed to type that's it's discouraging. Am I missing out on an obvious & easy to do this ? MazesInVt (talk) 17:29, 2 September 2010 (UTC)MazesInVt

Adopt-a-user reminder

Hello, I have completed a general cleanup of the adopter information page for the adopt-a-user project, located here. During my cleanup, I have removed several inactive and retired users. In order to provide interested adoptees with an easy location to find adopters, it is essential that the page be up-to-date with the latest information possible. Thus:

  • If you are no longer interested in being an adopter, please remove yourself from the list.
  • If you are still interested, please check the list to see if any information needs to be updated or added - especially your availability. Thank you.
  • You are receiving this message because you are listed as an adopter here.

Sean Hannity Edits

Thank you for your explanation for the deletion of my Sean Hannity article update. As suggested, I read the conflict of interest page. I do not feel that this applies to my update. For the following reason: The reason I added what I did was to put additional context to what was reported. Since I was the person who called into the radio show that was mentioned, I felt relevant information was left out and my addition provided additional context. I did link back to legitimate source material that included the Santa Barbara Independent Article that has my name in along with Sean Hannity's - I belie this validates my identity and first hand knowledge of events that took place at that time. I in no way intended to violate and Wikipedia policies or quality standards. Perhaps you can suggest some changes that would be more acceptable to the editors. Would you like to adopt?

Hi there! I've got quite a list of users at User:Netalarm/Survey that would like to be adopted. Would you like to adopt one? Their interests and preferences are all listed on that page, so if you would like to adopt one, please place {{Done|Adopted by USERNAME}} under the header and notify the adoptee. Thanks. An update from adopt a user

Hi there Danger! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.

On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.

Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.

Once again, thank you for participating in the adopt-a-user program! If you wish to respond to this post, please message me on my talk page.

Adopt me?

Hi.I am a young female experienced wikipedia user, but new wikipedia editor looking for an adopter. On the matrix of adopters you are the only editor who has listed an interest in biology, which is a primary interest of mine. Buddhism is another interest we have in common. I am essentially independent, but it would be nice to have a user that I can reliably go to for questions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Russot1 (talkcontribs) 20:38, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

Of course! I've set up a dedicated "classroom" for you if you want to use it. Some adopters write lessons about important Wikipedia topics. Let me know if you would find something like that helpful and please, in general let me know what you find helpful. Cheers, Danger (talk) 22:02, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

Hey danger, I saw that you'd been pretty active on Iggy Pop, and maybe you can help: is any one of these two sites, http://iggypop.org/ or http://www.iggy-pop.com/, an "official" Iggy site? I can't figure it out. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 16:15, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

The first can't be official, since it appears to rely on submissions by users. "If you have any confirmed Iggy news you'd like to see here, email us." An official would already have all the confirmed news it could possibly need. The second site has a webmaster who can be contacted to see what the site is all about. My gut says that it is a fan site though. --Danger (talk) 17:48, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks--I had that feeling already, though apparently I'm so blind I didn't see that submission note you found. I'm cutting them both--there's an official (?) site already listed, http://www.iggyandthestoogesmusic.com. Thanks again! Drmies (talk) 17:58, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Computing banners

I noticed you removed the WP Computing banner from Talk:Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. You probably thought {{WikiProject Internet}} added it to computing, but for better or worse it doesn't. I re-added it. (Incidentally, {{WikiProject Websites}} does add to Computing.) --Pnm (talk) 03:33, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

That's good to know. I generally don't like having articles listed in both parent and daughter projects, so I removed the article from WikiProject Computing intentionally. If that's preferred practice in the Computing project, I'll leave that template alone in the future and add it to websites and internet applications. --Danger (talk) 03:38, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
The important thing is that the article ends up in the Computing category so it appears in Computing worklists and watchlists. Adding an article to Websites takes care of that automatically. Probably, the Internet template should be modified so it does the same. It seems like having Computer Networking, Internet, and Websites is overkill, and their scopes should be narrowed so they don't intersect quite so much. --Pnm (talk) 18:31, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
Right-o. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the info. --Danger (talk) 20:01, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2011 WikiCup!

Hello, happy new year and welcome to the 2011 WikiCup! Your submissions' page can be found here and instructions of how to update the page can be found here and on the submissions' page itself. From the submissions' page, a bot will update the main scoresheet. Our rules have been very slightly updated from last year; the full rules can be found here. My questions

If you need any clarification on the ques, please feel free to ask. You're a good candidate; think carefully before answering the remaining questions. Best wishes. Wifione ....... Leave a message 17:23, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Thank you! I'm fairly confused on the last of your questions. I can't find any claims about this worm at all. It can't exist, at least under that name, because Salonia is already a genus of brachiopod. Is the notable but not credible claim a hypothetical? --Danger (talk) 17:37, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
Being a new animal group, is considered notable per CSD standards.....A7 can be applied on notable but not credible claim articles.... As you've not found any search links, you believe that the article's claim is notable as per CSD standards, yet, not credible. And you place the A7. But what would the admin do in this case, is the question, once you've done the deed? Wifione ....... Leave a message 17:58, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
Okay, I understand. Sorry, what I do in real life makes this a confusing question. If it had been about a car or something... --Danger (talk) 18:00, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

A quick query...

I note that you have a chronic health problem. Without needing to know specifics, is it something that can affect your judgement, or is it something physical which prevents you editing? The latter isn't a problem with regard to your RfA, as admins don't need to be on Wikipedia all the time! If you feel the need to give more detail, you are free to email me in confidence. I'm still weighing up where I stand on your RfA, and this is something I would like to know, but I didn't want to put it as a question on the RfA. Please be assured that whatever your response, I will not use it as a reason to oppose - if I oppose, it will be for other reasons! - but it could decide whether I support or not! -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 21:06, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

It is something physical that prevents me editing as much as I like. In the unlikely event that I would be incommunicado due to my health, I would allow my parents access to my email and they can respond on my behalf (out of office notes or something). --Danger (talk) 01:14, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
Thank you! I will continue to consider my !vote, and hopefully put it on the RfA in a couple of days. Good luck with it! -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 02:09, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

UChicago

I notice from your userpage that you attend (or once attended) the University of Chicago. Is it true what they say, does fun really come there to die? :) NW (Talk) 05:40, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes. There's even an administrative break day in winter quarter known universally as "Suicide Prevention Day". Every spring though, we have an orgiastic release of all the stresses of the year that makes it all worthwhile. This is why I've never edited on Mother's Day weekend. --Danger (talk) 05:48, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
Ah ha! One of my friends from high school who attended there always mentioned Suicide Prevention Day, but I never had a clue what it was.

I'm sorry for you. So why did you choose to go? NW (Talk) 05:52, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

The good answer: I was undecided and MIT doesn't have a good gender studies program. The bad answer: I was a punk when I entered college and didn't see myself fitting in any of the other places I applied, but the tour guide I had at U(C) (that should be read as functional notation, ie "U of C") had pink hair. The true answer: I came here for Scav.
It's a, er, special place. Not one I'd recommend for many people, but for a certain type of person it can be a good home. --Danger (talk) 05:58, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

Your RfA

Hi Danger. I just wanted to drop by and wish you good luck on your RfA. I had already supported before you answered questions 12-15, but if I hadn't, those answers would have sealed the deal. As Fastily said, you knocked those out of the park, and I hope you get the bit if only for my sake: I've got F8's that have been languishing for over a month, and an additional image-savvy admin clearing out that backlog would be a wonderful boon to the project. On a side note, I thought your request for gender-neutral pronouns was perfectly reasonable; I'm sure it must be irritating that a lot of folks aren't honoring it. I assume, though, that that's just due to lack of reading the "fine print" on a long RfA page rather than any intentional disrespect. Anyway, good luck! 28bytes (talk) 17:13, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

Over a month? Wikipedia servers being in Florida, you'd think the right to a speedy trial would come into play! I would be glad to bring in a shovel on that backlog. And yes, the pronoun thing is extremely irritating, but I'm quite used to it at this point. C'est la vie, non? Thank you very much for your support, not just in the !vote sense.--Danger (talk) 17:19, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
You're welcome. And I'll try to restrain myself from oppose-badgering, I was just rather baffled at the 33% and "collegial editing" comments. But knowing RfA, I'm sure those won't be the only baffling comments I'll see, so I'll let others take up the case if they're inclined. 28bytes (talk) 18:08, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
I spent about an hour the other day attempting to calmly discuss the pictures on the ejaculation article. I am so frustrated. --Danger (talk) 18:14, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

You're welcome. With regards to the IP editor, they were blocked but that should wear off in a few hours. I personally hope that they continue to try to participate, but trying to add content and being blocked must be very frustrating. --Danger (talk) 14:06, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
I know. I'll take responsibility for having reported him/her. It got too frustrating to repeatedly have to point to WP:NPOV and beg for a bit of dialogue. I'm hoping that the block will prod him/her in the right direction. I took it as a pseudo block on myself as well and stayed away until this afternoon. *shrug* -danjel (talk to me) 14:19, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
I understand the frustration in dealing with new and somewhat misguided users. NPOV is a difficult concept to fully grasp, especially when one is new to Wikipedia when one is overwhelmed with our exciting rules and policies. Sometimes it can be helpful to distill the main applicable point along with a pointer to the full policy. In this discussion, you did that eventually, but it seems like emotions were already running high, which seems to be the cause of a lot of 3RR violations in my experience. Could have turned out better, but c'est la vie. I'm going to keep the article on my watchlist for a while and if you'd like any assistance with it (or anything else) give me a poke here. Best, Danger (talk) 15:55, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

RfA !vote

Hi there; i just comment/!voted in your RfA, and i wanted to tell you that the fact i used "he" to refer to you is not intended as an insult, nor as a purposeful ignoring of your request for gender-neutral pronouns. It is simply that (like Humpty Dumpty) when i use words they mean what i choose them to mean, and it's my belief that "he", "him", and "his" can be gender neutral. I cannot bring myself to use the incorrect "they" nor the artificial "zir" or some other construct when there is a perfectly good word available. I hope i've not offended you! Cheers, LindsayHello 04:54, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Well, as a matter of fact, yes, you have offended me. It is offensive and painful to be misgendered. Every comment I read calling me "this fellow" or referring to "his contributions" is like a kick in the gut. Having unpleasant things said about me hurts my feelings; being misgendered makes my insides twist. I honestly don't know how you expect me to respond to a post like this, which says, in essence, that your desire to use language that you are comfortable with supercedes your respect for me. But at least you took the time to read my request, so I suppose I ought be grateful for that.
Otherwise, thank you for taking the time to comment on my RFA. Cheers, Danger (talk) 08:09, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
I am, sincerely, very sorry. Offense to a fellow editor is nothing i want to have been part of. Would that i could take it back, or that our language had an acceptable (to us both) gender-neutral set of pronouns. Friends? i hope. Cheers, LindsayHello 17:23, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
Danger, I came to your talk page to commend your poise and conduct in your RFA - and to thank you for teaching me something interesting about image copyright as well. I have also noted that it seems both of us have attended the University of Chicago. Since I am here, I will join in the conversation that is already happening in the room. I respect your right to not disclose your gender; however, I think you have to accept that there are corresponding compromises. In particular, you thereby increase the chances that people will attribute a gender to you that you do not like, whether by inattention or ignorance of your preferences, or by being personally unwilling to massacre English grammar to satisfy your preferences. In my opinion, you are incorrect in saying Lindsay (and others) have offended you (active voice construct). The most you can say is that they have caused you to take offence (passive voice construct). On those occasions where I have taken momentary offence at remarks, either receiving an explanation that makes it clear that no offence was intended (as Lindsay has done in this case) or just thinking through that it is most likely there was no intent to offend, has quickly negated the offence! I'm not trying to badger you, but I'm assuming your objective function is to minimize pain to yourself and others, so I'm somewhat flatfootedly encouraging you to find internal solutions, since that will likely be more effective than depending on others' exceptional willingness to accomodate. Cheers, Martinp (talk) 05:34, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
Just a grammar note from a passerby... it is perfectly possible to be gender-neutral and not violate the rules of English grammar. I managed to do it at Danger's RfA, and if "singular they" is good enough for Shakespeare, it's good enough for me. 28bytes (talk) 06:09, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
Suffice it to say that when I am gendered incorrectly, I always assume inattention or ignorance on the part of the genderer. Annoying, but no offense. When someone explains to me that they intentionally misgendered me, that is offensive. As I said, it indicates that there is greater respect for prescriptivist grammar than there is for me. If the grammar gods really must be appeased, it's perfectly possible, as many !voters did, to simply refer to me without pronouns at all.
Regarding supposed gender-neutrality, I've been working on this encyclopedia for 4.5 years. In that time, the only time someone has gendered me female is when I was attacked on my user talk page for removing speedy deletion templates from feminism and portal:feminism. On Wikipedia, I am assumed to be a man until I'm assumed to be a bitch.
Martin, thank you for reading and commenting on my RfA. I'm glad to see that you came out of U(C) alive. That gives me hope that it is possible. --Danger (talk) 10:06, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
I understand your frustration, but would suggest that you take things in your stride.
My university, who then ended up employing me, pays peanuts to monkeys to do data entry at its HR department. As such, someone, at some stage, entered me with the label "Miss", and the sex "F". When it came time for me to work through things like practicum, I had to get a police check done, which the university organised for me, but every reference to me had MISS... Then my name, so... "MISS DANIEL"... OK, Daniel, Daniell, Danielle, right? My middle name... MISS DANIEL RUSSELL... Know what the female equivalent to Russell is? Neither do I.
When all of this was done, I was going through exams and a messy break up... So I was somewhat... Bearded. And I looked like I had been sleeping in gutters (my college, or dorm, was almost a gutter, so yeah). So, after arguing for however long, when the lady on the phone just didn't believe that the computer was wrong and that I was male, I thought that if I dropped around HR, surely she would. No. Apparently Miss's can have beards. Half an hour of frustration later, I go talk to the HR manager, who I finally get to write up my police check documents with MR instead.
The good news is that I am apparently still female according to certain systems at HR. So. I started working at uni shortly thereafter, and when maternity leave provisions changed a while back, I was informed of the wonderful and generous (relative to the rest of the industry) range of fully paid leave options available to me whenever I choose to fall pregnant. So long as I get medical certificates made out to Ms. then my surname... I should be right. Point of the story, people are stupid, laugh more. :) -danjel (talk to me) 12:29, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
Strides taken. Many many strides. I wish I could take strides in real life the way I do on the internet. (disability joke) :-) I'm probably coming off as a lot more upset than I am. Honestly, I deal with so much bullshit aggravation in real life and on the 'pedia that the gendering barely phases me. It's just rare that someone wants to discuss it with me, so I'm savoring the opportunity, probably much more than I should. --Danger (talk) 12:44, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
All good. :) Take it easy. -danjel (talk to me) 12:58, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Congratulations on getting the bit! A number of Wikipedians agree that the RfA process is due for an overhaul in order to make it less of a mugging and hence attract more candidates who are staying away. I hope that you will now consider taking an active interest in the process that got you there, and help to stabilise the situation by coming along and offering some intelligent !votes on RfA debates. My thoughts on improvement are here, several others have their own ideas too, and a list of those is also on that page. Take care and happy sysoping! --Kudpung (talk) 07:12, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words here and for your comments on my RfA.
I'm not sure on RfA. On one hand, it was a miserable experience that ruined a solid 5 days of my life and had me seriously considering giving up Wikipedia altogether. (But I guess now I'm thoroughly hazed.) Change clearly would be a good thing. On the other hand, I'm not sure what can be done to change that; I think Wikipedia needs more bureaucracy like I need a broken leg and I don't think criteria will end uninformed and uninformative votes.
I also don't know that I can take the time to make intelligent votes. (And I'll dispense with the "not", because we're just fooling ourselves with it, and ineffectively to boot.) There are only 8–12 waking hours in a day, after all. Add it to the list of "oughts", I guess. --Danger (talk) 07:33, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
No, we certainly don't want more bureaucracy! What we want to do is to make the process more appealing to those experienced users who are not accepting nominations because they are not prepared to step into the snake pit. Your comments above are exceptionally valid and we've already lost two excellent users to retirement because of the way they were treated at RfA. It would be a very great help if at least you could make the feelings you voiced above known in an appropriate moment on an appropriate thread at Wikipedia talk:Requests for adminship. Cheers, --Kudpung (talk) 11:23, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
There was a snake pit option!? I would definitely have gone with that if I had known before!
I've been thinking about this more, and I think that RfA is the kind of environment with the potential to bring out the more petty and vindictive side of my nature, the side that I prefer to keep chained in the closet. It seems that I am not alone in this chain-loosening issue, although I suppose that it may be that many people don't suppress that side to begin with. I'll say something at talk when it comes up, but I don't think that I can trust myself to participate in the hazing ritual without wielding a paddle. The point being that it's somewhat of a Catch-22; RfA won't change until more editors participate productively, but the current nature of RfA changes the participants to be unproductive. --Danger (talk) 05:46, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

congratulations!

Congratulations on receiving your secret code to the janitor's closet!
Here are some words of wisdom passed down to me, when my mop was still shiny and sparkling new, by the puppy:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always make the wrong choice. (See #5.)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block button sparingly. Enjoy the eloquent insults and beautiful photographs of male genitalia you will receive absolutely free of charge when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors that someone will be more than happy to point your faults out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
    and finally,
  6. Remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able. :-) KrakatoaKatie 04:04, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
Thank you! I am so glad that I no longer have to pay for genitalia photos! --Danger (talk) 05:47, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks

Not sure where to put this comment so if this is inappropriate just remove it.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Top Ryde City entry. It was both generous with your time and even handed. Unfortunately I got into trouble because I was not fully aware of the rules and I will make more effort to be a better editor in the future. If I understand correctly you are now an admin ... apparently well deserved. 110.174.23.139 (talk) 05:05, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words. I encourage you to continue editing, and especially to flesh out Top Ryde City with the government sources that you linked to on the talk page. I've put Top Ryde City on watch, so if you'd like to continue working there and need any help I'll be around to step in. And of course, if you have any questions about Wikipedia more generally, please don't hesitate to ask me here. Best, Danger (talk) 05:37, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Adoption

Having recently created a wikipedia account I have spent the last few days getting used to wikipedias way of working. I came across the adopt a user feature, after a look through the entire list, I picked you, mainly because we both share an interest in biology, and in your case zology and mine with veterinary medicine.

I plan on helping wikipedia as much as I can, having already signed up to several projects, and already have a few pages that I want to improve.

I myself am 16 years old and live in Dorset, England. I have interests in veterinary medicine as stated above, and hopefully will make it into veterinary college, but I also have interests in trains, working on a narrow gauge railway, photography and web design. Because I know web design it helps with editing posts as some of it is HTML based.

I am looking for a adopter who will guide me through using wikipedia, and be able to help me if need be.
Thanks for reading this,
Lucas,

Lord Castellan Creed (talk) 22:04, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Of course. First off, would you prefer a more structured adoption, with suggested reading and suggested projects, or would you prefer a more informal relationship where I answer any questions you have? (I apologize if my replies over the next few days are a bit spotty, but I'm getting pretty sick. See the box above.) --Danger (talk) 22:19, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
Sorry to hear about your health problems, if it's too much of a issue to adopt me don't worry about it, as there is a fair few people adopting. I don't expect instant replies, we are in different time zones so it would never have happened anyways.
As for adoption, I have already been given a load of tutorials and help pages to read through. I don't really mind which way the adoption would work, suggested projects could be a good way to go but it depends if you wish to spend the time on doing it for me. Whatever is best fir you would suit me.
I most likely will be offline by the time you post as it is fairly late here.
Thanks,
Lucas,

Lord Castellan Creed (talk) 22:33, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
Alright, I've created an adoption classroom for you. Put it on your watchlist. There, we can work together to get you through the initial learning curve of Wikipedia's exciting rules and regulations. If you have a particular project that you would like to work on, an article that you would like to improve or a task here that you are interested in doing, list it under the "project" section. If you're not sure, don't worry about it; as you learn more about the 'pedia, you can figure out what you like to do here.--Danger (talk) 03:07, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Words of wisdom

Gimme danger,

I read your replies to the congratulations above. RfA made me grow crazy and I passed 76/1/1 in 2006. I'm still around. I have less than thirteen thousands edits. I am an active administrator on the English Wikipedia, my oversight to be returned soon, an OTRS admin, and I had the good fortune to actually work for the Wikimedia Foundation. Never would I have dreamed that running for RfA would provide such opportunities to support free knowledge. Keep up the good work. Keegan (talk) 07:36, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Thank you! Fortunately, in order to run for RfA at this point, one must already be crazy, so actually my mental state is unchanged. Perhaps one must be crazy to be an admin at any time. At any rate, mops away. I am thrilled to join such a team. Shall we swab together!? --Danger (talk) 07:46, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Absolutely. I'm always around to help, and I'm a wizard with history merges. Keegan (talk) 07:11, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

Outline update 2011-01-18, and an invitation...

Oh my God, you're an admin. Are we in danger now!

Coolness. Congratulations!!! Having fun with the tools yet?

By the way, as you probably know, I'm in the process of getting the outline development team back up to speed. I hope you will help keep an eye on things.

With that in mind, here's an update on the project, followed by an invitation...

We've undergone a name change: the project has been simplified to "WikiProject Outlines".

The current main focus is on increasing the availability of outlines. If readers can't find the outlines, the outlines can't help them. We need to figure out the best places to put links, and the best ways to attract external traffic directly to these pages.

While studying the link structure to outlines, I came across a navigation aid I forgot we had that you might find useful:

If you'd like to use the main page with outline links instead of portal links, set Wikipedia:Main Page alternative (outline links) as your default main page. See the instructions.

Due to the occasional sniping attempt on outlines and their support pages, outlines now have an alert page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Outlines/Article alerts. Please go there now and add it to your watchlist.

Tarheel95 and Robert Skyhawk are working on a project to track traffic to outline pages. Speaking of traffic...

A discussion on outline traffic analysis has been started on the Outlines WikiProject talk page. You are cordially invited to participate. Your input is greatly needed on possible ways to increase the availability of the outlines. All ideas and feedback are welcome. I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely, The Transhumanist 07:54, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

P.S.: don't forget to watchlist the alert page mentioned above. Cheers. -TT

Of course you're in danger! I've just been biding my time to raise holy hell, obviously. On my to-do list for tomorrow: get milk, clean the catbox, delete the main page, mop the kitchen, block Jimbo.
I like the new name. Simple. Better. I don't think I'll be working with the project anymore. I'm not sure what I think about outlines at this point and I don't want to sink a lot of time into another project right now after taking on all this new admin work. I'll probably stop by and see how y'all are doing later this year though. It was good though; I'm sorry to let you down. Best, Danger (talk) 08:14, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
Several of our members are admins (or were). No big deal. They pop in from time to time. You are in good company:
Thank you for the GFDL credits and {{main}} clean up. Every little bit helps. It helps a lot lot, actually. We're spread pretty thin around here.
Cheers. The Transhumanist 20:05, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
I figured I should finally clean up my own mess after almost two years. I'm trying to do at least a letter a day. --Danger (talk) 20:10, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Notice

Hey, since I'm not totally sure of the protocol, I just wanted to make sure I did everything right in regards to this notice. It seemed like the right place for it, but I wasn't 100% sure. Thanks so much! Yaksar (let's chat) 01:42, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

I think ANI was probably the right place to take it, since any change to the notice would have to be undertaken by an administrator. However, I don't think that you sufficiently exhausted the usual dispute resolution methods, especially since you only made one post on Cirt's talk page before the ANI report, as far as I can tell. (Given Cirt's response to the ANI, I think that he almost certainly would have been receptive to discussion; I was unable to find evidence of him either being condescending or dismissing you.) Your report was difficult to evaluate because you did not provide diffs to support your allegations of behavior problems, leaving editors trying to evaluate the dispute to digging through page histories and editor contributions. With regards to notification, I think you were technically correct in only notifying Cirt, but that it can be polite to notify others immediately involved in a situation. Most of that is just my opinion; I'm still getting used to this admin thing. Best, Danger (talk) 02:16, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks so much. My reluctance to deal more with the user was mostly due to his previous history on these pages; he'd been especially combative and had recently undergone what was essentially an edit war with me due to what I think was his own sense of owning the article. His response to the ANI was encouraging, but follows his pattern of brushing off all criticism until either the editor goes away or takes it to the next level. My only real worry of admin abuse was in regards to what he had done to end the earlier discussion I did not take part in. However, given that other editors have joined the conversation with complaints about the users behavior, I guess I wasn't so wrong to bring it up. Out of curiosity, should I wait for any particular action in regards to that notice, or should I consider it closed? Thanks again for your input. --Yaksar (let's chat) 02:33, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
It will stay up for a while before being archived, so it might garner a little more attention, but I would consider it closed. As I said, you didn't provide much to go on in terms of evidence of misbehavior and the user in question seems to be doing what you'd like, so I doubt anyone else will step in, unless there's something big that I'm missing. --Danger (talk) 02:39, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
I guess I'm still somewhat concerned with both North8000's comment on the subject, as well as my comment about Cirt's "well-timed" archiving of the talk page. Although at this point now that my original concern has been addressed I guess I may be reading too much into things. Sorry that I keep clogging up your talk page, and thanks again! --Yaksar (let's chat) 02:48, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Also, here's the condescending remark I should have linked to. Yaksar (let's chat) 05:35, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Re species notability

Pah! Wrong on so many levels! Having studied a little palaeoanthropology I'm well aware that a species only exists if enough people can argue it does (and following on from this, the less evidence you have, the more you can argue, thereby creating more species). Actually, I knew next to nothing about flatworms before I saw a reference to them on Wikipedia a day or two ago. In any case the whole 'species' thing is a social construct (guess what else I've studied), and the thin film of living organisms that floats on the surface of this damp but sunlit planet is little more than randomised organic soup, placed their by the Flying Spaghetti Monster for his noodly entertainment. AndyTheGrump (talk) 05:39, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

We the living are so much less entertaining than strippers and beer.--Danger (talk) 05:54, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Flatworms, having penis fencing, presumably have little need for either strippers or beer. ;-) AndyTheGrump (talk) 06:26, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Ramen to that!--Danger (talk) 06:50, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Occidental

Thanks for the feedback on the Occidental Petroleum Financial section-- I agree it could be reworded a bit. Were you directed there from my note on the help desk? If you didn't see it, I'm currently looking for feedback on draft revisions to other sections of that article. You can find my draft at User:CBuiltother/Occidental Petroleum Controversy, and feel free to leave any comments on the talk page. Thanks! --CBuiltother (talk) 17:22, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I did get there from the help desk. I'll try to look over your controversy draft, but one of my chronic illnesses is acting up, so my mental energy is pretty limited. I have to commend you on your approach; I have dealt with a lot of editors with COI issues, but before you I've never personally encountered one acting to mitigate them the way that you have. It gives me hope. Thank you. --Danger (talk) 01:07, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

You're an awesome person!

Thanks for welcoming me to the site. You'll be an awesome admin! I am not purely basing this on the fact that you stood up for your pronouns. Well, mostly not. Non-binary wikipedians unite! Escapepea (talk) 00:34, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Technically, my position is that my gender identity is not something I'd like to reveal on the 'pedia for various reasons. I'm not necessarily non-binary, but I certainly could be. ;-) You might be interested in Wikipedia:WikiProject Gender studies if researching and writing about gender appeals to you. Again, welcome! (And I love your username, btw.) --Danger (talk) 00:55, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
I'm probably more likely to work on gender-y stuff via the LGBT side of things, but thanks for the heads-up. I've got a suspicious feeling that I'm going to write lots of stuff on various non-binary identities, find no notable sources for them, fight to keep them from being merged into Genderqueer or deleted, and desperately seek backup. Where did you get your box for saying that your pronoun is they? Escapepea (talk) 12:07, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
I found the userbox here. If you don't find one that you like, you can make your own; it's pretty simple. For LGBT stuff we have WikiProject LBGT which I think is a little more active than Gender studies anyway. Some really great work has come out of it. Our coverage of genderqueer/non-binary issues is, in my opinion, quite deficient though. Regarding the merge issue, I have a feeling that non-binary identities are only starting to be noticed by the "establishment" that Wikipedia uses as sources and that it may take a little time before they become "notable" in the Wikipedia sense. I think it's not a loss to have a consolidated but excellent non-binary/genderqueer article and then split out articles as more sources become available. --Danger (talk) 17:59, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Funtime

It just occurred to me that your username may be an Iggy Pop reference. If so, you may be interested to know I just nominated "Funtime" for a "Did you know..." spot. If you happen to have any books or magazines with additional info about that song that can be included before it hits the main page, feel free to drop it in there and grab a DYK credit. 28bytes (talk) 03:11, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

My dead-tree stuff is pretty limited with regards to the actual song. The problem is, as you probably know, that The Idiot was recorded in two locations, and while my sources are telling me where every other song one the album was recorded, they left out "Funtime". So I don't have any info on hand about recording and the stuff I have doesn't really get into writing in specifics. I'll put in what I've got though.
So, why 28? --Danger (talk) 08:31, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
28 is a perfect number, and the number of cubes on the Q*bert grid, and my date of birth. :) 28bytes (talk) 09:00, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
JK, I misread the index, and my dead tree sources actually have nothing on "Funtime". But I'll be adding a little to the "Fun House" article. Sorry, wish I could help. I was planning on embarking on an Iggy Pop related content quest... sometime. I don't know if this is a one off thing or maybe you'd like to join the party? --Danger (talk) 08:46, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
It's possibly a one-off for me, Iggy-wise; I'm not that familiar with his work yet, I've mostly been trying to build articles on notable songs The Cars have performed, and this was one of them. But I may check out some CDs of his to see what I'm missing; a lot of artists I like are clearly fans of his. 28bytes (talk) 08:58, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
Raw Power was the soundtrack to an excellent period of my life (and also when I registered this account). I would recommend it highly as the best of Iggy Pop's work, plus Lust for Life and Fun House. His later work, after The Idiot, can be safely passed up, in my opinion. --Danger (talk) 09:35, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the recommendations. Looks like my library has a copy of Raw Power, so I've requested they hold it for me. 28bytes (talk) 18:16, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

File:61SNOW1 12 20 08.jpg

Sorry about your health. What image on Commons is this identical to? I can't find it there under that name.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 15:04, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

File:Chop suey restaurant in kingston ny.jpg. I figured that if I renamed it the file would be transferred to Commons eventually anyway, so I renamed and transferred in the same step. Did I do this incorrectly? (I've never done this before, so I tried to cover all the bases, but I'm not necessarily the sharpest tack in the box.) --Danger (talk) 15:39, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
You did great! I was gonna ask you about the papaya one, but I unlinked it...--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 16:03, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello, I don't suppose you know why these images are up for/being deleted from Commons, do you? It's just I knew the chap who uploaded them and I'm almost 100% sure that he took them (the chapel image, for example, was taken when I was there!), so I'm not sure why they're up as a copyvio. I don't have Commons OTRS access, so I don't know what the particular ticket states. Rob (talk) 18:17, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

The images were also the subject of an OTRS ticket (#2011012510017672) here. I deleted them here because they were tagged by a volunteer (User:Asav) with access to the ticket who is not a sysop. If you'd like to talk about the issue, I suggest you contact them, because as far as I'm concerned OTRS is a black box. (In other words, "Hey man, I just work here!" :-P) --Danger (talk) 18:26, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Haha, yeah, thanks, I'll try asking him. Rob (talk) 18:35, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

A bit lost

I'm a bit lost with the tagging of the additional images I listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files/2011 January 13#File:Josef Zwonarz.jpg with {{di-no source}}. They were all properly tagged for two weeks, why weren't they deleted on the spot like File:Josef Zwonarz.jpg? — ξxplicit 19:53, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

I couldn't find evidence that they were not taken by the user (they look like basic snapshots), so I didn't want to pull the trigger. I did this improperly. I'll go delete them. Sorry for my mistake. --Danger (talk) 21:21, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Axel Örbom

You closed the move request at Axel Örbom because of two opposed votes. No policy reason was given in those two votes and they should have been ignored. They were both based on the timing of the move request and not on any Wikipedia naming policy. Both my request and the support vote were policy based. You are giving equal weight to how the name appears in the Swedish National Encyclopedia and a Google search showing that Libris lists "Axel Örbom". --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 21:15, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

Since the first request was barely cold when the second was initiated, I considered the arguments made by Tomas e in the first move request as well. The arguments for moving were that another encyclopedia uses the proposed name and that there is a possible need for disambiguation. The arguments against moving were that the original name is the common name (the one the person used for himself and the one used in some print sources). The need for disambiguation was addressed and it appears that there is no such need. Neither side has great evidence of what is the common name. Since the default stance is "not move" (much like how in deletion debates, in theory, the default is "keep"), I closed it that way.
Thank you for giving me a chance to explain my reasoning. If you would like any more help, my virtual door is ever open. --Danger (talk) 21:39, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

How goes it?

I know our mentorship ended on rather bad terms. I've thought a lot about my performance on wikipedia, and really am trying to change the way I edit. Perhaps if you have the time, I'd be very grateful if you watched my edits and give me some feedback every now and then.

I totally understand if this makes you uncomfortable. Wikifan12345 (talk) 09:01, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

I'll think about it. I'm probably willing, but I think I would have to set a few conditions before. I'll give some more consideration to what those might be and then you can choose to take or leave them. --Danger (talk) 10:10, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
All right cool. I think you have my email. Let me know. Wikifan12345 (talk) 21:25, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Okay. Here are the terms:
  1. A voluntary extended topic... avoidance for a few months. No articles about the Middle East, or current events. If it happened in the last twenty years or if it happened within 2500 miles east of Tel Aviv, I don't want you to touch it for now.
  2. My adoption program. Here is a classroom for you.
  3. Sustained off-wiki correspondence, either through instant messaging or email, in which we discuss conflict management and specific conflicts with other editors.
(Note to readers: I would like to keep this off-wiki to allow both Wikifan and I to be frank regarding the actions of other editors and our feelings about them. Editing conflicts have at least two parties and it is the responsibility of a good editor to be cool when the other party is being a dick or when their own feelings are running hot. I think it is impossible to discuss how to do this without calling a dick a dick or discussing those feelings and that is not a discussion I think can or should happen on-wiki.)
Think about it and let me know. Best, Danger (talk) 14:56, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
I sent you an email. Wikifan12345 (talk) 01:24, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
