Jordan River (Utah)

I'm back from a hiatus. My father had a heart attack and was at my brother's marriage. Unfortunately, my brother did get married and therefore didn't survive. I changed/added a couple of sentences relating to the canals flowing south from the Jordan River and back into Utah Lake and on the Surplus Canal. If these changes are ok, I think I've answered all of your questions/suggestions. Is there something I missed or didn't do right?

There was a spill of 33,000 gallons of crude oil into Red Butte Creek last week. Some of the oil did make it into the Jordan River and eventually into the Great Salt Lake. It's unknown how much has made it into the river. Most of the news is focusing on the "rich" people next to the creek and the oil that made it into Liberty Park. Saw you added and then deleted an old photo of dam on the Jordan River. Sorry, I didn't have the source in the right spot on wikimedia. Source has been updated on the wikimedia page for the photo. The photo was printed in a book from 1901 that was published by the USGS, so the Utah State Historical Society cannot copyright the photo. Should the photo be cropped to remove the copyright tag? Your comment about the broken link on several footnotes was a puzzlement, but I finally figured it out: there can be no extra spaces in the cref template. So {{cref |a|...}} will work. {{cref|a |...}} will not. For your chest of wikimedia trivia, if it ever comes up again.

Glad you like the Main Street panorama. I added it just now - please feel fee to tweak the placement, caption, and/or alt text. I walked along the levee but there were not any great shots from there or the railroad near the university that I found. I like the houses along Water Street too, but they are bigger and further apart, and so more difficult to get into a panorama. Re: notes and references

It's still not the ideal way of presenting things, since the WP:MOS discourages the use of multiple subsection headers like that. However, in looking at what you've got there, you are presenting both actual footnotes, inline citations, as well as an alphabetical listing of references. So it's a lot of info. Capitol Loop

It's been ages since I've asked for your assistance, but I was wondering what you'd think about copy editing and reviewing a highway article again? The backstory here is simple, Awadewit looked over this article almost two years ago for me when we were discussing the concept of "context" on highway articles. Since then, I've moved closer so I have better access to the libraries local to that roadway. Last week, I rewrote the article on the Capitol Loop, purging the press releases as source and actually expanding on the content. Now the previous version was rated A-Class by the project, and I've asked on the project page for editors to review it on the article's talk page. I know it could use some polishing in the prose department, so I was hoping you might be willing at some point to help. List of parks in Portland, Oregon

Oh! Nice!, Bull Run River (Oregon) I see. Some time ago when I saw you and others plugging away at it I wanted to help and began researching things. But once I saw that its watershed is protected for supplying water to Portland I realized I was out of my element. I feel confident researching the Cedar River (Washington)--Seattle's equivalent, more or less, but how could a non-Portlander, non-Oregonian like me write about Bull Run River?? Okay, I'm being silly, but its true that once I learned about Bull Run's role as Portland's water supply I kinda stepped back. The only thing I had ever heard about Bull Run was that 19th century surveyors had to run the Willamette Meridian's baseline over the mountains and the Bull Run basin. River tips

Sometime next week I was planning on getting photos of a creek in NW Pennsylvania (this one in particular), as well as to gather information. You have a fine (fine, finetooth, haha, ermph...) reputation as an outstanding peer reviewer on Wikipedia. So, I was wondering if you could give a quick review of Mauna Kea in reference to a possible, rather, probable, FAC. Nothing major, just a quick review post on the talkpage of any outstanding issues. South Fork John Day River

I saw you were looking for the watershed area of the South Fork John Day River, and I think I found it: 607 square miles.([1], page 1, 'Watershed Overview'). Well, I searched and searched and searched, even found a whole watershed assessment for the Illinois, and it didn't even mention the length! (Take a look, maybe I missed it somewhere in there...) I guess the Angler's Guide will just have to do. Anyway, the list looks awesome; maybe if you squeezed in some pictures you could take it to FLC? I could definitely make a map like the one you described, although it might take me a while. I've been looking for any other 40-mile-plus rivers in Oregon; Silver Creek is a definite possibility. Page 18 of this PDF says that Silver Creek drains 1,700 square miles, so it must be over 40 miles long, but I can't find a source. Apparently there is a Silver Creek watershed assessment, but I guess it isn't on the web. Oh well, I'll keep looking. LittleMountain5 23:27, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Well, I found the watershed assessment, but it didn't even mention the creek's length. :( Other 40-mile-plus possibilities include Jordan and Willow creeks in Malheur County, Joseph Creek in Wallowa County, Willow and Rock creeks in Gilliam/Morrow counties, and—like Pfly said below—the Kings River in Harney County. I haven't checked for sources for any of these, they're just guesses. I'll go work on the map now. :) LittleMountain5 14:31, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

40+ miles

I saw that you were compiling a list of streams of Oregon over 40 miles long. I thought I'd look for lesser-known possibilities. I haven't looked very hard, but have you considered Big Sheep Creek? No Wikipedia page, it seems; in GNIS it's U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Big Sheep Creek. A quick and rough measure in Google Earth gave me a length of something right around 40 miles. Pfly (talk) 03:36, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Also Kings River (Nevada), which just just barely barely flows through Oregon at its source. Seems to be about 40 miles long, more or less. Pfly (talk) 04:20, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Basically, I am involved in the WP:CUP, I have three articles (The others being Exelon Pavilions, which Ruhrfisch (talk · contribs) is ceing now and 1997 Michigan Wolverines football team, which Cbl62 (talk · contribs) says he should get to in time for me to attempt to promote for CUP points) that are basically a good ce away from being ready for WP:FAC. They need to close at FAC by October 31 in order for me to get cup points. However, simultaneous nominations are discouraged unless you have co-nominators. I am expecting Exelon to be ready by the end of the week. I would hope to get the others in the FAC pipeline before the end of the month. I am just not that good a copyeditor. Lewis and Clark

Thanks for the kind words. I liked visiting the Lewis and Clark River area. Hopefully we'll manage another family vacation to Cannon Beach someday. If you do someday want to play with GIS data, the app I mentioned, ArcExplorer, is free and fairly simple. It's little more than a GIS data viewer, without the bazillion analysis tools of most GIS apps. It's interface is a bit annoying, but it does the job. Could be a good way to get started. Most GIS apps are dauntingly complex. I agree that citing the WBD, or the NHD, seems reliable--but isn't exactly a helpful way to show others how to verify the info. Maybe it would be helpful if the cite wasn't just to the WBD in general, but the specific datafiles, and perhaps something like, "accessed via ArcExplorer." That way others could, if they really wanted, download the specific datafile and viewer app. Hmm, I'll think about how that kind of citation might be done. It might be difficult to provide specific datafile names. I could point to a website that extracts the data and emails it to you (which is how I've been downloading the bits and pieces so far). ..Anyway, I should get to checking those basin sizes tonight sometime. I fixed the length ref as it was missing the URL. It seems to me that the length of the Klamath Rivewr could be calcualted from the total length (287 miles) minus the river miles at the Oregon-California border (208 miles). Thanks - Exelon Pavilions was at FAC for three weeks, which was an odd experience. Two supports early on, then a long time in limbo, then a fairly fast close once it had a fourth support and image check (to the point where I was still cleaning up some issues raised in the FAC before I could reasonably send out thank spam).
