Big Brother 8 is the eighth season of the US version of the reality TV-show Big Brother on CBS. The season was announced on February 1st, 2007.[1] Julie Chen will return for this season as host. Alison Grodner and Rich Meehan have been announced as executive producers. Arnold Shapiro stepped down as producer following last season's All-Stars edition, but will serve as executive consultant on the show. Casting calls ran until May 5, 2007. A preview was shown on the The Early Show on July 5, 2007, the day of the premiere.

It has also been announced that CBS' cable/satellite premium network Showtime Too will carry a spinoff of the series called Big Brother: After Dark, which will air nightly live from 12 AM—3 AM (EDT). This program will feature house activity happening between those times, and will be edited only for slanderous statements and music copyrights.[2]

It has also been confirmed that former houseguest and presenter of the online talk show, House Calls, Marcellas Reynolds, will not be returning to host the daytime chat show after CBS announced budget cuts, although his co-presenter, Gretchen Massey, will continue as host of the program. The program broadcasts live at cbs.com every weekday at 1PM (EST), where viewers call-in with questions and discussion about the show. On Fridays, the evicted houseguest will appear on the show.

Ratings

Big Brother 8 will air episodes three times a week, with shows airing Sundays at 8 PM (EDT), Tuesdays 9 PM (EDT), and Thursday 8 PM (EDT). The first episode premiered on July 5, 2007 with 7.44 million viewers (4.8/9 viewing audience), down from last year's 5.2/9 launch.[3] However, the following show on Sunday did much worse in the ratings, scoring a 3.9/7 viewing figure.[4] As with the previous seasons, live streaming video feeds are available for purchase through RealNetworks. All ratings are from Nielsen Media Research and Zap2it.

Chronology

Each week in the Big Brother house is summarized here. Entrances, tasks, competitions, and other noteworthy events for a particular week are noted.

Week 1 Entrances
  • On Day 1, eleven houseguests entered the Big Brother house.[5]
  • On Day 1, the nemeses — Dick, Dustin, and Jessica — entered the house via the Head of Household room before the other houseguests arrived.[6]
Events
  • The nemeses were able to watch, from an upstairs room via a TV monitor, the other houseguests without their knowledge for their first hours in the Big Brother house. Since they were unable to compete in the Head of Household competition, the nemeses were safe from nominations for the first week.[6]
  • As Head of Household, Kail nominated Amber and Carol for eviction.[7]
  • America's Player, Eric, was tasked by the viewing public "to reveal his soft side by making up a traumatic story about his past" and tell it to Kail.
Competitions
  • On Day 1, Kail and Eric won the first Head of Household competition, then Dick, Dustin, and Jessica were given the choice to nominate one of the two for the position, and all agreed to vote Kail as Head of Household.[8]
  • The first food competition involved using their bodies to cover up in butter and then put it in a tub of popcorn. The team who got the most won food for the week, while the losers were put on slop. The red team (Amber, Carol, Dick, Dustin, Jen, Kail and Mike) got 77 pounds and the blue team (Daniele, Eric, Jameka, Jessica, Joe, Nick and Zach) got 37 pounds.[9]

Houseguests

The list of houseguests were announced during The Early Show on June 28, 2007.[10] The twist this year is "Biggest Nemesis", as six of the Houseguests have moved into the house with their enemies, and have been revealed as Joe/Dustin (ex-boyfriends), Daniele/Dick (estranged daugther/father), and Carol/Jessica (ex-best friends).

Carol attends the University of Kansas and is part of their dance team.[12] She is the daughter of Kansas State Senator Phil Journey.[13] Jessica and Carol were best friends as young teens, but had a falling out and went their separate ways. Her biggest enemy in the house is Jessica. She hopes to prove that a good person has the ability to win. [11]

Daniele

Daniele Donato (born August 20, 1986) is a waitress from Huntington Beach, California. Dick is her estranged father,[14] with whom she hadn't spoken in over two years before entering the house.

Dick

Daniele is his estranged daughter.[14] Dick has claimed to be an acquaintance with numerous famous celebrities, one in particular being Cher, with whom he claims to have had dinner.[15]. He has nicknamed himself "Evil Dick", and is not shy about his ability to manipulate women. He hopes to patch up things with Daniele in order to form an alliance. [11]

Dustin Erikstrup is a 22-year-old shoe salesman from Chicago, Illinois. Dustin and Joe used to be a couple, and had a bitter breakup. She is also a self-proclaimed computer nerd, and she hopes to use her good looks to gain leverage in the house. [11]

Jessica

Joe and Dustin used to be a couple, and had a bitter breakup after Joe claimed that he received gonorrhoea from Dustin.[19] His biggest enemy in the house is Dustin, and he hopes to gain leverage by bringing out Dustin's real personality. [11]

This year Canadian Broadcast network, Global TV, will be introducing an interactive Two-Screen Solutions game on their website, Big Brother 'In The House'. Viewers will be able to make real-time predictions as well as answer trivia and instant recall questions while watching the show. Example, "Who will be nominated?" or "Which HouseGuests will kiss this episode?". The Big Brother fan with the most points each week will win a TV and the fan with the most points throughout the season will win tickets to the wrap party.
