Pirelli & C. SpA (BITPC) is a diverse multinational company based in Milan, Italy.

History

In 1872 Giovanni Battista Pirelli, a young engineer, founded Pirelli & C. in Milan at the age of twenty-four. A year later, the first facility for the production of rubber articles was up and running.

Toward the end of the century the process of diversification began: from insulated telegraph cable (1879) to underwater telegraph cable (1886) to the first bicycle tyres (1890). The first automobile tyre came off the line in 1901. With the new century, Pirelli began enjoying its first sporting victories and building plants abroad: in Spain (1902), Great Britain (1914) and Argentina (1917). In 1927 the Superflex Stella Bianca racing tyre was introduced.

The beginning of the 1950s saw the birth of the Cinturato radial, which would leave a decisive mark in the history of tyres. In the meantime, Pirelli continued with its geographical expansion, which proceeded through the '60s and '70s, acquiring the German tyre manufacturer Veith, while starting up cable production facilities in Perù (1968) and Australia (1975). In the mid-'70s Pirelli invented the low profile tyre, the famous P7, one of the most important inventions in the industry after the Cinturato radial.

During the 1980s Pirelli acquired the German motorcycle tyre maker Metzeler and Standard Telephone Cable, manufacturer of telecommunications land cable. After a company-wide restructuring in 1992-93, Pirelli implemented an international relaunch, and in 1994 presented the Pirelli P Zero ultra-low profile tread, used for the most prestigious tyre models.

The new millennium saw yet another revolution in the tyre sector: the MIRS™ production system, introduced in 2000, for the automated fabrication of high-performance tyres. For R&D the group opens Pirelli Labs, the cutting-edge development division for the group's new technologies, from photonics and fibre optics to material sciences. As for real estate, after a decade of steady growth that made Pirelli the most important player in the Italian real estate panorama, Pirelli RE went public in 2002. The business of the Group expanded to include new activities in the fields of broadband access (Pirelli Broadband Solutions), as well as those regarding the environment and renewable energy sources (Pirelli Ambiente and Pirelli Eco Technology), while cable activities and photonics were dismissed. In this period the first Pirelli tyre production plant in China opened in the city of Yanzhou (followed by the opening of a second plant) and a new steelcord and tyre production plants were inaugurated in Romania (followed by the opening of a second plant for particulate filters production). In 2001 Pirelli became the main shareholder of Telecom Italia. The sale of its stake, completed in 2007, allowed Pirelli to focus further on its core businesses.

The Pirelli Tyre's production capability is now divided among 23 factories: 4 are located in Italy, 5 in Brazil, 2 in Great Britain, 2 in Germany, 1 in China, 2 in Turkey, 2 in Romania, 1 in Argentina, 1 in Egypt, 1 in Spain, 1 in the USA and 1 in Venezuela. The commercial structure covers all the principal geographic markets and reaches over 160 countries with a network of around 10,000 distributors and retailers.

Recent developments

In February, 2009 the group presented its industrial plan for the three-year period 2009-2011. The goal is one of transformation, bringing the Pirelli group to greater focus on its core businesses (Pirelli Tyre and the particulate filters of Pirelli Eco Technology), to be a "green performer" in its areas of activity and to have the financial flexibility to be able to sustain growth. Pirelli will continue to develop products and solutions on the cutting edge in the "green economy", which offers important development opportunities in various sectors: sustainable mobility, eco-compatible building construction, renewable energy.

The "CAL"

The Pirelli Calendar is published annually, and regularly features famous actresses and fashion models. The calendar also features the work of many of the most respected fashion photographers in the world, including Herb Ritz, Richard Avedon, Mert & Marcus, Peter Lindbergh, Annie Leibovitz, and Patrick Demarchelier. It was the 1964 edition that introduced the Pirelli calendar to international stardom. Due primarily to the "friendly" but sexy pictures of Robert Freeman. It was an immediate success: the models, immortalised on the splendid beaches of the Côte d'Azur, shocked a country that was emerging from the austerity of the 1950s.

The setting for the 36th "Cal" (2009) is the landscape of Botswana, where famed photographer Peter Beard spent ten days immortalizing seven internationally renowned models. The 2010 Pirelli Calendar, which will be launched in November, was shot on location at the beautiful Transoco, Bahia, Brazil with models including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Lily Cole, Catherine McNeil, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Daisy Lowe, Gracie Carvalho, Marloes Horst, Ana Beatriz Barros, Miranda Kerr, Georgina Stojilkovicg and Eniko Mihalik

Motorsport

The debut was early. As long ago as 1897, Giovanbattista Pirelli supplied tyres to riders in a motorcycle race, the first official competition which was the Paris-Beijing in 1907, won by the Prince Scipione.

In the Twenties, the collaboration with Alfa Romeo started, which, together with the Milan company, dominated the Grand Prix of that era, fitting cars such as the Alfa P2 models driven by Antonio Ascari, Giuseppe Campari and Gastone Brilli Peri (winner of the first Formula 1 World title in 1925). This was followed by success in the 1000 Miglia race, where Pirelli also became a major force in road racing. Borghese's Itala. With the Alfa Romeo 158 and 159, Pirelli obtained the first two F1 world titles, thanks to Nino Farina from Turin and Juan-Manuel Fangio, and in 1952 it achieved victory with Alberto Ascari's 4-cylinder Ferrari 500 in the F1 World Championship (six wins out of six, in the races in which he took part).

But since the beginning of the 1900s, Pirelli has also had an important role in motorcycle racing, with Tazio Nuvolari included among its riders. In the Thirties, the Guzzi, Gilera and Bianchi bikes were all fitted with Pirelli Motocord: it was with this tyre – between 1937 and 1939 – that riders like Taruffi, Alberti, Vanni and Sandri, on the Guzzi 250 and the Gilera 500, established one speed record after another.

More recently, Pirelli is the exclusive supply for championships such as the WRC and the Grand Am from 2008 to 2010 as regards car racing, and for the SBK until 2012 as regards motorcycle racing. Apart from rallies, Pirelli's attention has been concentrated on races for prototypes and GT cars. Pirellis have won endurance races, like the Daytona 24 Hours, and the IMSA Titles, in the mid-nineties with Oldsmobile and Ferrari.

Marketing

The Pirelli Internetional Award is given annually for the best international multimedia involving the communication of Science & Technology conducted entirely on the Internet.

Power is nothing without control is the well known slogan of Pirelli Tyre Company, and is featured in numerous television and print advertisements.

Pirelli is the long-serving main sponsor of Italian football club F.C. Internazionale Milano.

Trivia

They formerly made scuba diving rebreathers.[2]

Pirelli is the primary sponsor of the Italian football club Internazionale, the Argentinian football club Velez, the Uruguayan football club Penarol, and of Maltese club Valletta for a short time.

Pirelli has a factory in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England. Burton Albion Football Club (of the Football League Two) built a new stadium next to the factory in 2005, and Pirelli agreed to sponsor the stadium and allow it to be called the Pirelli Stadium.

Pirelli also has a major manufacturing site in Carlisle, UK.

Pirelli is the only allowed tyre brand in the FIM World Superbike Championship in 2007.

Pirelli has also been awarded the contract for the control tyre supply in the British Superbike Championship from 2008 until at least 2010.[3]

Pirelli is also the official tyre supplier of the World Rally Championship replacing BF Goodrich for the 2008 season, with all cars using Pirelli tyres and having Pirelli decals on the cars.

Beginning from 2009, Pirelli is also the official sponsor of Chinese Super League(CSL).
