Premise
Set on Waverly Place in Manhattan, New York's Greenwich Village neighborhood, Wizards of Waverly Place centers on the Russo family, which includes Alex (Selena Gomez), her younger brother Max (Jake T. Austin) and their older brother Justin (David Henrie). The three Russo siblings are wizards in training and live with their Italian-American father Jerry (David DeLuise), a former wizard, and their Mexican-American mother, Theresa (Maria Canals Barrera) who is a mortal. Alex's best friend Harper (Jennifer Stone) also found out about the Russos' wizard powers in season 2. The siblings have to keep their secret safe while living in the mortal world. When they become adults , the three siblings will have a wizard competition to decide who will become the family wizard of their generation and keep their powers forever. The magical world tends to be very eccentric and surreal.

Production
The series was created and is executive produced by Todd J. Greenwald, who began developing the show after working as a writer and consulting producer during the first season of Hannah Montana. The show is produced by It's a Laugh Productions and Disney Channel Original Productions. The theme song, written by John Adair and Steve Hampton, is of techno-pop style and is performed by Selena Gomez "Everything Is Not What It Seems". The series is filmed at Hollywood Center Studios in Hollywood, California.
This is the first show on the Disney Channel to have a mixed ethnicity or Latino family as the main characters.

Main settings
*Waverly Sub Station is the Russo Family's sandwich shop. All three children have to help by working there but can also stay there and do their homework or be with friends.
*The Wizard Lair is where the Russo kids have magic lessons with their father Jerry. Unless they put magic on it, it is a freezer.
*The Loft is where the Russo family lives. It is connected to the magic lair and the Waverly Sub Station.
*Waverly Place is outside of the Waverly Sub Station. Mainly, the pedestrian-only alleyway is shot and Waverly Place is only shot on certain occasions like in the episode First Kiss, prior to the crystal ball scene. The set features some stores that are named after the creators of the show, such as "Greenwald's Hardware" (Todd J. Greenwald) and "Murrieta Art Supply" (Peter Murrieta).
*Tribeca Prep is the school that Justin, Alex, Max, and their friends attend as normal kids.
*WizTech is the magic school seen in "Wizard School" and "Saving WizTech", where Justin, Alex, and Max have temporarily been enrolled. The school contains many homages to Harry Potter, particularly the student's black robes and glasses, similar to those at Hogwarts. They learn all their magic there and train as wizards.
*The Kitchen is a place where the Russo family create their sandwiches and drinks. It leads to the Sub Station as well as the Wizard Lair.

Characters
Main Article: List of Wizards of Waverly Place characters

Selena Gomez as Alexandra "Alex" Margarita Russo- The middle child and the only girl in the family. She often gets in trouble by misusing magic and is frequently the first suspect when anything magical goes wrong with the family. She does poorly in regular school and wizard training, although this seems to be due to lack of effort, not ability.

David Henrie as Justin Vincento Pepe Russo- The eldest child of the family. He always focuses on his magical studies and is an advanced wizard. As of season 3, he has finished his wizard studies and is now taking a monster hunting course as part of his independent studies. He is believed to be destined to become the winner of the wizard competition. However, Justin loses his powers to Alex during the wizard competition during the Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie.

Jake T. Austin as Maxmillion "Max" Justin Russo- The youngest child in the family. He often spends his time doing odd things. Like Alex, he often uses magic incorrectly and is not doing well in school. He is not smart, although it is mentioned in the episode Wizard for a Day that he has a C- in Math, which Alex replies, C-? How are you doing better than me?. He had a magical tutor named Tutor. In Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie he did not compete with Alex and Justin in the wizard competition because by that time he had disappeared. (Alex wished that her parents had never met holding the spell book which causes her wish to come true, with this the three children would never be born and after a certain amount of time they would all disappear.)

David DeLuise as Jaredd Vincent "Jerry" Russo - The father and teacher of Alex, Justin, and Max. He was the winner of the Wizard Competition in his family, but gave up his powers to marry Theresa, a mortal. In many episodes you see he wishes he was still a wizard.

Maria Canals Barrera as Theresa Russo (Theresa Margarita Devez)- The mother of Alex, Justin, and Max and is also a mortal. She doesn't particularly like magic but loves her husband Jerry, as well as the rest of her family.

Jennifer Stone as Harper Finkle- Alex's best friend. She learns about magic in the episode Harper Knows. She is very terrified of Alex's use of magic. When she is under pressure, or Alex has done something and she knows about it, she replies with an excuse, such as See you in P.E.!. She has a huge crush on Justin, but it wears off when he starts to date Juliet. In Wizards and Vampires vs. Zombies, it is shown that she has a crush on Zeke, Justin's best friend. She also wears weird clothing, which she designs and fabricates herself, and the clothing she wears usually has food involved. In one episode it shows that Jerry eats a pretzel off of her dress and says "this dress needs more salt". In season 3 she moves in with the Russos.

Wizards of Waverly Place is an Emmy Award winning, live-action Disney Channel Original Series which premiered on October 12, 2007 on Disney Channel. It won an Emmy Award in 2009 for outstanding childrens' program.[1] The series was created by Todd J. Greenwald, and stars Selena Gomez, David Henrie and Jake T. Austin as three siblings with magical abilities.[2] The series began filming in July 2009 in High Definition for its third season, (that make the special effects become sligly, but visible better than before).[3] The show is taped in front of a live studio audience, proven by videos of the curtain call and Selena Gomez on YouTube. The series wrapped up filming season 3 on March 23, 2010.[4]

 • Waverly Sub Station is the Russo Family's sandwich shop. All three children have to help by working there but can also stay there and do their homework or be with friends.
 • The Wizard Lair is where the Russo kids have magic lessons with their father Jerry. Unless they put magic on it, it is a freezer.
 • The Loft is where the Russo family lives. It is connected to the magic lair and the Waverly Sub Station.
 • Waverly Place is outside of the Waverly Sub Station.
 • Tribeca Prep is the school that Justin, Alex, Max, and their friends attend as normal kids.
 • WizTech is the magic school seen in "Wizard School" and "Saving WizTech", where Justin, Alex, and Max have temporarily been enrolled. The school contains many homages to Harry Potter, particularly the student's black robes and glasses, similar to those at Hogwarts. They learn all their magic there and train as wizards.
 • The Kitchen is a place where the Russo family create their sandwiches and drinks.
