Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), Rourkela (Odia: ବିଜୁ ପଟ୍ଟନାୟକ ବୈଷୟିକ ବିଶ୍ଵବିଦ୍ୟାଳୟ) was created by an act of the Odisha state legislature in November 2002. Almost all the engineering, pharmacy, architecture and most of the colleges offering B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, MCA, B.Pharm, M.Pharma and B.Arch degree programmes are either constituent or affiliated colleges of BPUT. Now, the university has 156 colleges, both constituent and affiliated, with around 120,000 students. The disciplines include engineering and architecture, business management and hotel management, computer studies and pharmacy.

Though the colleges are all constituent to the Biju Patnaik University of Technology, depending on the funding and the management the colleges can be classified into three types – the University maintained colleges, the trust colleges and the Odisha government colleges. Of the Odisha government colleges seven are 100 per cent funded by the State Government of Odisha and were founded in the late 1980s or early 1990s.
The number of colleges under the university goes up to 160 if the colleges that run professional courses are included.
Academics
The university offers an undergraduate program in engineering (duration: 4 years) that awards a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.)/Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree and in architecture (duration: 5 years) that awards a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch). The university offers postgraduate programs that lead to Master of Technology (M.Tech), Master of Science (Engg) [M.Sc (Engg)], Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The M.Sc (Engg) and PhD are research degrees while the rest are taught degrees.
Every year BPUT confers undergraduate degrees to over 45,000 engineering students, postgraduate degrees to over 1500 students and also awarding PhD & M. Sc. (Engg.) degrees to over 90 students.
